Haven't been here since 2008/2009. I am in town for work so stopped by for a late lunch. There was a line of cars around the building in the drive-thru so I opted on ordering at the walk up window. I ordered the Spicy Pig with Chili, Onion Rings and a Large Lemonade. The food was amazing and the drink was ice cold. My order was under $10, which is a great deal. I have been going here since I was a child. Me and my family even made a song about going to The Big Dipper. In my continued effort to find the best chili cheese fries in Owensboro, I've come across Big Dipper. I must say that it is a strong contender for the title. The portion is great for the price and the chili/cheese to potato ratio is perfect. The presentation of my order is exactly what I was hoping for: styrofoam clam shell tray. The fries were crinkle cut which are the appropriate fry style for my enjoyment of this fine American dish. The chili had a meat to bean ratio that I enjoyed and was not sweet nor spicy but still flavor packed. The service was super cool despite the place being hammered with customers. My order came out hot, fast, and exactly as expected. The restaurant itself is reminiscent of the Queen of Dairies before she lost her soul. It reminds me of a DQ from the eighties. There's a walk up window, drive thru, and some patio seating to sit and enjoy a nice day with the fam and friends. You order at the window of this nostalgic restaurant, cash is preferred (there is a small surcharge if you use a credit card). We started with dessert, three ice cream sundaes. One hot fudge, one peach and one strawberry. The sundaes were a perfect creamy treat for this 90 plus degree day. The staff was so friendly we took her advice and ordered the pig in a blanket. A juicy hotdog stuffed with cheese wrapped in bacon deep fried and put in a bun with all the toppings. It was delicious! We also got the deep fried cheese because as our granddaughter pointed out the sign said "Try our fried cheese". Our granddaughter really enjoyed them, it was not to disappoint. read more

I am a usual costumer here that comes about twice a week. I love the food and the prices but the customer service has gone down ASTRONOMICALLY in the last 3 months. All of the workers act like you are taking up their time or don't care to take care of you. Along with that none of the workers have a smile on their face or smile at you... Great ice cream place...Long line for drive through...but seemed to move quickly. We parked and went to window. Very impressed with prices... my husband and I each got a large twist cone and one fish sandwich and total was $9.10. Which we found to be very reasonable. And it was yummy!! read more

Bring cash. they do not accept cards and there is nothing worse than waiting in line and finding out this fact because you missed the signs. Trust me, this is experience talking. 2. You'll see menu items called "Pig" and "Spicy Pig". You want to order this. A hotdog split with cheese inside, wrapped in back, and fried. It's as good as it sounds. Get it with mustard and onion. 3. Spicy Pig is SPICY! You've been warned so be prepared. Grab a chocolate malt to cool it down. 4. "Sausage on a Bun" is just that: breakfast sausage patty on a hamburger bun. What a fun little place! My husband is from Owensboro and I've heard so much about it. It's my first time in town, so we stopped here right away on the way in to see family. It's very no-frills and old-fashioned. I had a hamburger and tried the "gems" (tater tots) and cheese bites and a seasonal peppermint shake. The Dipper is a great local place with lots of history. It's technically fast food, but much better than your typical fast food restaurants. They accept CASH ONLY so make sure you have it before you go! The Dipper serves a variety of food and ice cream items. The burgers are great, and the potato gems are always perfectly crispy. They also have a pig in the blanket which is a hot dog split in two with cheese in the middle, wrapped in a piece of bacon, deep fried, and put on a bun. Yeah, it sounds like a $2 heart attack, but it's so yummy. However, the caramel shake really steals the show. It's hard to describe how good it is so if you can make it out to the Dipper do yourself a favor and order one! read more

If you're on a diet, I don't recommend the Big Dipper. However, if you're not, you definitely need to check it out. I have no clue how long this place has been open, but it seems like forever would be a sufficent answer. It's your "greasy spoon" for ice cream and frozen treats plus burgers and fried food. Every time I'm in the 'boro, I attempt to stop here. At some dining establishments, you have a "the usual." This is one place I don't have that. I suppose the pineapple milkshake (sweet yet refreshing) and a cup of ice (They literally have THE BEST ICE EVER.) would be closest for me. I've also tried a variety of fried things. Honestly, some of them were a little random, so I don't even remember what they were. I do remember eating every bite though. While it is in a busy location in Owensboro, the drive thru is greatly appreciated. It seems like it is raining every time I visit, so I'm thankful to stay in my car. Sitting outside and enjoying my treats sounds like a good idea too, and thankfully they have tables and benches for that. To be honest, I'm about ready to visit Owensboro and the Big Dipper again, because it sounds good right about now. read more

It's not that the burgers are freshly prepared or a high quality meat that makes them stand out - I'm sure it's frozen patties, but the taste is just something that can't be replicated anywhere else. The fries are meh - ask for salt and ketchup - the tots are better, and the onion rings just aren't worth it. The place is so cheap. I can usually get a burger, fries and coke for about $5 cash. Have been eating here for 20 years. Great burgers and shakes! Moving out of town and was eating here nearly everyday because I was going to miss it so much. On one of my last orders they forgot to include an item ($3.40) but charged me and I didn't realize until I got home. I went again to eat the next day and let them know but they refused to reimburse me or give me the item they had left off my order just on my word. Apparently you have to call the same day---an unwritten rule they will not make exceptions on. It's $3.40. I'm not going to miss it. But I will never forget that as one of the last interactions at this place I've frequented over the years the "manager" hung up on me , refusing to entertain the notion of giving me an item they had mistakenly left off. Times are hard, especially for small businesses like this one (though they are doing well!), but opportunities to make things right are easy. This could have been an easy fix for them and made for a happier story overall. It's a shame. I hope if someone from the Big Dipper reads this, they pay that $3.40 forward and reconsider a policy of not righting small errors they make in the course of business. read more

The line to order does get pretty long, which just goes to show the place is great by how busy they stay & the fact that they only accept cash, but I believe this is how they keep their prices lower.
