The best salad bar I've seen in years. In Louisville there are only a few places with salad bars, and they don't even come close to Briarpatch. I really liked the cheese squares and Oreo pudding. I would like to come back on a Monday to try the potato soup. The service here was friendly and quick. The restaurant seemed like it had a lot of the original details which was really cool. We had a fantastic first experience here. My husband ordered the Trio of Beef--filet, beef tips, and prime rib--and every cut was cooked to a perfect medium. After tasting his prime rib, my only regret is that I didn't order it myself! I went with the New York strip, and it arrived perfectly medium-rare, just the way I like it. The stuffed spud was absolutely delicious, hearty, and full of flavor. We skipped the salad and soup bar, but really appreciated that they deduct a bit from the price when you do--such a considerate touch. Service was top-notch from start to finish. This place used to be great. However, my steaks have been overcooked the last two times I've gone in. I prefer my steaks medium rare which seems to be a problem. I'm reviewing the hot brown sandwich. It's one of Kentucky's own open faced turkey ham bacon tomato usually a béchamel this one had a.Mornay sauce. A sandwich should have excellent bread. This open face sandwich had lowest quality bread. The ham and the turkey seemed to be out of a package the Mornay sauce is in my opinion. It's not only wrong for this sandwich, but it was also gelatinous. The bacon was good. The tomatoes were good. They offered a small side. I opted for the potato salad. It was not my cup of tea. Hard potatoes, sour dressing. The staff was wonderful the restaurant charming I can't comment on any other other food since I ordered only the hot brown. There's plenty of parking and I noticed they had children and elderly that they accommodated the menu was varied plenty for a family to pick from. read more

This is our go to place for date night whenever my wife and I are in Owensboro. We love the burgers and the salad bar. I do wish that there was more gluten free options here and the hours were extended a bit, however pertaining to the gluten free options, I wish that about most restaurants due to my wife and son having a gluten intolerance. The salad bar is great and the price isn't that bad for a date night. I would consider this an upscale restaurant for Owensboro. Normally good. Worst meal I have had here ever. Marinated chicken was not marinated, cooked dry, pineapple ring that is usually cooked on chicken was cold. Came in for dinner tonight and the food and service were both well below average. We both ordered steaks, a potato skin appetizer and I ordered wine. I will start with the one good and that is the salad bar. It is a solid, traditional salad bar and the two ladies maintaining it were hard working. As for the rest the potato skins were okay but a bit crispy. At this point the meal went downhill fast. Both steaks were badly overcooked. I ate most of mine as I can eat medium/medium well steak even if I ordered medium rare. My daughter wanted to have a new steak but we did not see the waitress for 20 minutes after delivering our food. She did have time to go behind the kitchen line and share items on her phone with the cook while we were without service. My wine never was delivered. When we let the waitress know that we just wanted to get rid of my daughter's meal as I had already finished mine, they took the steak price off but added the $15 ala carte salad bar. The manager could not be bothered to come over and talk with us. Even if the meal was correctly cooked and with decent service the steaks were over priced. Looking for a nice steak for supper? Briarpatch has you covered. All entrees come with the amazing fresh salad bar. Since we moved to Owensboro, everyone has recommended this place and told us to make sure and get the salad bar. Deduct $3 if you opt out of the salad bar. I was very pleased with the bacon wrapped filet and grilled shrimp entree. The cheese sticks for appetizers were very good as well. Everything comes with a warm loaf of bread and strawberry butter. We were so disappointed. Between the four of us, we ordered the prime rib, the trio platter and the rib eye. None of it was good. Very greasy and all the beef had the same greasy flavor. The prime rib was so tough, it was inedible. I didn't want to embarrass our host, so we did not complain. But it was a very disappointing meal after our 45 minute drive to dine there. read more

Briarpatch is a lovely family-owned restaurant at a quiet corner about 1/2-mile east of fast-paced Frederica St. Before arrival, I sent an e-mail regarding reservations, and a co-owner replied with a cordial e-mail saying no reservations are accepted (except perhaps for banquet room / large parties), but that our wait likely wouldn't be more than 20 minutes. When we arrived, it was dark, but there was still parking in the lot on the west side of the building. True to the co-owner's word, the wait for a party of four was about ten minutes. Other impressions: *The dining area was cozy, but not too cramped. *The salad bar wasn't the most extensive, but still had some interesting items like sardines. *The wine list was short, but reasonably priced. *Our steaks were prepared correctly. *The stuffed flounder was excellent! *Our server Patrick was attentive, but gave us plenty of time with the salad bar before bringing entrees to the rather smallish table. I love the salad bar here. I've ordered a few things from the menu and it's all been good, but sometimes I just need to pig out and have a massive salad. Plus I always marvel at the plaques of massive steak eaters in the first room. 20oz steak, 40oz ribeye, no comparison to the top 98oz meat-mageddon that one fellow managed. I'm competitive, so I feel the need to challenge. For now I will stick to training at the salad bar... but I have a 99oz steak in my future... read more

This definitely isn't the Briarpatch I remember growing up in Owensboro. The salad bar was pretty sad. The club sandwich was just a plain sandwich, not even close to a club sandwich from other places like O'Charleys. The KY hot brown had black toast under whatever that yellow liquid stuff on top, didn't appear to taste like cheese. It took a little over and hour to get our food. The only thing to cook was toast! I suppose the two kids cooking didn't know how to multitask and there was no apparent management to be found Our server was nice and working hard. Also, the interior of the place was so tacky and very outdated. We will never return nor will my parents that live in Owensboro! read more

They have a wonderful salad bar, and soups, and at one time I could say Great steaks, but my last stop I purchased a NY Strip, cooked medium well. It was cooked to order,but it tasted like water. I told the waiter and I was told, " you should have asked for seasoning ". I have never had to ask for that anywhere, nor their in the past. I heard it is under new ownership. It has been months since I was there. I'll try it again but if their still cutting cost, it'll be the last. I'd rather pay more for what I was used too, then be served cheaper cuts and and smaller servings. read more

Good potential, horrible execution. We ate here for Mother's Day lunch. the wait was only 30 minutes and towards the end of the meal, there were a lot of empty tables in the room. We ordered 2 rib eyes and 1 filet, all medium rare. All three were well done and not seasoned properly. It's always a red flag when a waitress tries to push steak sauce before the steaks even arrive. 2-22-14: We had a large gathering of about 25 people and were seated in a private room with plenty of space. The salad bar was well stocked. Our food was delivered hot and had good flavor. I had grilled chicken and mixed vegetables. The reason for 4/5 stars was two-fold: My mixed vegetables...the broccoli part of my mixed veggies turned to only stems after about 1/3 of the way down. The chicken was very tender, hot and well-flavored. The only other issue (not the waitresses fault...I'm sure it was probably how management assigned our group to the waitstaff) was that our waitress was responsible for filling drink orders, taking orders, re-filling drinks and delivering food ALL by HERSELF. This slowed progress and part of the party was well into their meals as others were still waiting for their dinner to be served. Quaint place. Local hot spot. Clean and friendly. Alot of variety on the menu. I got a burger. Good beef but was a little dry. They have a nice salad bar as well as soups to go with your meal. The most disappointing part about the meal was that instead of serving their home baked warm bread with butter, they used margarine spread (ew). As far as the cheesy potato soup, it was definitely made with Velveeta (also ew). I found the place lacked class by using those cheap alternatives. This place was recommended by a coworker who was from the area. I couldn't get over how good the salad bar was. I could go to this place and have the salad bar alone. Anything you could think of was there and it was good! I ordered the meal that had all the meats sampler so it came with a small fillet, beef tips, and some other beef steak option. It was all ok. If I had only gotten the meat sampler it would cost them a star but the soup and salad made up for it. I will be going back. read more
