Just a few of the buffet options!

We've never been here before and let me tell you!!! YUMMMMMMYYYYY!! We had the all you can eat buffet with a loaded salad bar, hot bar with fried chicken, ribs, kraut &sausage, bbq pulled pork & chicken, meatloaf and all the sides, a soup bar with 3 different options and a dessert bar! Their dining room is very quaint and welcoming and includes a fireplace and red tablecloths and rolls of paper towels on the table. The service was good, just enough friendly to make you feel welcome! Knocked out one of the big BBQ places in Owensboro off our list for sure! Will be back next month to try their Breakfast Buffet!! Can't wait!

Great food, tons of options. Seating for your entire group! Three or four different barbecue sauce options. Salad buffet is loaded with toppings, ice cream machine is on point! Vanilla ice cream with hot fudge and caramel sauce pumps to cover the ice cream with as much as you want.

    Ready for some dinner!

The service was fast and the food delicious. Very small town feel and you're a little crowded in the restaurant, but that is only because everyone wasn't to get a piece of the food they serve. I would recommend and stop to have their food. I went for the buffet. I ate until I was not able to move. lol only because it was that good.

This was the BEST bbq buffet in Owensboro. 10 out of 10 recommend...especially their breakfast/brunch buffet.

I'm glad I went back and tried this place again. Much, much better than my first experience. This time I got rib platter with coleslaw and baked beans, and some ham. The coleslaw is fresh, a little pepper, very nice. Baked beans are smokey and the thicker consistency I love. Ribs are delicious and I got a little bit of the spicy sauce to put on them too. Ham is smokey, juicy, not to salty and served cold, sweet meat. I do stand by my original review of the potato salad, it's not for me, but this time the meat was on point...corn muffins do don't disappoint. Dine out service is fast and friendly.

Burgoo is waiting for you at the breakfast buffet along the back wall.

Oh my. I discovered their breakfast buffet dessert selection. I feel you can come here for the buffet and eat only dessert. Vanilla soft serve with hot fudge and caramel ready to go. They had cobbler, puddings, and brownies. Oh my. Yum! Service was top notch as always! The vibe is chill on a Sunday with people lined up to get in, but waiting patiently. Cool place!

I was a little worried about giving Ole South a try. Buffets are nor usually my choice since most buffets are about quantity, not quality. I was also worried if the BBQ sauce was going to be the vinegar dip variety. But I had to complete the Owensboro BBQ trifecta. Well...those two fears were quickly put to rest at Ole South. I chose the buffet so I could sample everything. I ev3n ate a salad at a BBQ joint but that's boring to talk about. I had fried chicken, chipped pork, pulled pork, chipped mutton, potato salad, beans, Mac and cheese, slaw, mashed potatoes and gravy, cinnamon apple, broccoli casserole, green beans, and creamed corn. You can't go wrong with any of the meats. There are two BBQ sauces - a thin vinegar which I didn't like but the thick and smoky was an accurate description with some sweetness. The potato salad was unique as it seemed like it was a redskin variety with some pimentos and other things. Cream corn had a fresh and delicious flavor. I remember I didn't like the broccoli casserole and the cinnamon apple didn't ha e much cinnamon. Burgoo was very mutton heavy. Dessert was included as well. The bread pudding was my favorite out of tue desserts. Sweet tea was refreshingly sweet. All of this was worth the $15 plus tip I passed out. I will be making a trip back to Ole South in the near future.

Old Hickory BBQ in Owensboro, Kentucky, delivers exactly what its reputation promises--and then…read moresome. I'd heard more than once, from both my girlfriend and coworkers, that Owensboro is a barbecue town through and through, so when she pointed me toward Old Hickory, expectations were high. Walking in, I was immediately charmed. The space feels like a cozy old cottage infused with unmistakable local pride. Awards and accolades from magazines and even the Food Network line the walls, setting the stage for something special before you ever open the menu. One of the most endearing details, though, is how deeply rooted this place is in the community. The tabletops themselves double as a kind of hometown directory, showcasing local Owensboro businesses. It's a thoughtful, almost nostalgic touch that reinforces the sense that Old Hickory isn't just in Owensboro--it belongs to it. To fully experience what they do best, I ordered the combination platter, a barbecue lover's dream designed for indecision. My lineup included brisket, baby back ribs, and a quarter of white-meat BBQ chicken, with baked beans and mashed potatoes with gravy on the side. The platter arrived surprisingly fast, and the portion size was nothing short of impressive--this is serious, no-nonsense barbecue. The brisket was a standout: fork-tender with generous pieces of that deeply flavorful, smoky bark that true BBQ fans crave. The baby back ribs struck the perfect balance--tender but still offering a satisfying bite off the bone, never mushy or overdone. The chicken was juicy and well-seasoned, cooked just right overall, with only a couple slightly drier bites near the edge of the breast--hardly enough to detract from an otherwise excellent showing. The mashed potatoes and gravy were rich, comforting, and clearly made with care. The baked beans leaned more vinegary than I personally prefer, but they were still good enough that I cleaned the plate without hesitation--a testament to their overall quality. I couldn't help overhearing a nearby table raving about the mac and cheese, and honestly, that might be my biggest regret of the visit. An elderly woman at the table--easily in her 80s--declared, "This mac and cheese kicks ass!" I laughed, briefly considered ordering my own, then accepted defeat--I was already completely full. One small surprise was the classic slices of white and wheat bread served alongside the platter. When I asked about it, the waitress explained that many customers use it to build their own BBQ sandwiches. While I would've loved a square of cornbread instead, the tradition makes sense--and fits the no-frills authenticity of the place. I tried their original vinegar-based sauce, which was tangy, bright, and perfectly suited to the meats. I do wish I'd had the chance to sample their other sauces, but that just gives me an excuse to return. Could I nitpick and mention the limited napkins? Sure--but at a place this good, I ended up licking my fingers clean anyway. Old Hickory BBQ isn't just a meal; it's an Owensboro experience--hearty, genuine, and absolutely delicious.

Owensboro has been vaguely on my radar for years due to the local specialty of mutton BBQ, and I…read morelove unusual meats. Unfortunately, I found the food, especially given reputation, to be disappointing. I'll start with the positives: one of the mutton ribs was absolutely sublime, with the fat suffused through the meat and a great flavor. The other mutton rib was somehow much drier. The sliced mutton was also okay, particularly with the black vinegar sauce. I was not a fan of the chopped mutton or burgoo, both of which has no discernable clear flavor and were closer to slop. Chopped mutton is kind of liked chopped liver but grainier and less tasty. Pickles, fries, bread, etc were all just commerical. I'd consider going back for a sliced mutton sandwich if in the area, but even as a mutton enthusiast I wouldn't make a special journey.

HONEY, SUGAR, SWEETIE... vs. Hi!…read more Most of the waitresses there aren't that great, in my opinion, but I had one who was phenomenal. Her name is Miriam and I was hoping to get her the last time I went to GC. I even went to her section of the restaurant when I saw her. Unfortunately, I was approached by a different server who used one of those pet names that I strongly do not appreciate, "honey". I don't know if no one has ever told them that not everyone likes that and that it is NOT PROFESSIONAL or if they are just too lazy to do better. Miriam, however, never used such demeaning greeting. She was pleasant, polite, and professional the entire visit (my previous visit). She listened and communicated well, though English may not have been her first language. Although I really appreciated the service by the one waitress, why are waitresses needed at buffets anyway? As with fast food restaurants, customers can get and refill their own drinks, clear their tables, and get their own food, so what is the purpose of servers at buffets, besides collecting tips? Seriously. If the purpose of having servers at buffets is to give customers a nicer, slightly more upscale dining experience than that of fast food restaurants, then surely the servers should EARN those tips by providing great service, right? Otherwise they could be eliminated, with no thought, as is the trend in much of American society, due, in part, to AI and security cameras. Nonetheless, most of the food is tasty most of the time at this GC. Sometimes it is hard to get certain items, however. The availability of fresh items (like fried chicken, sweet potatoes, strawberries, or banana pudding) varies from time of day or season of the year. GC's campaign of separate pay items (lobster, cotton candy...) is just annoying in a buffet setting, especially concerning the cotton candy, which, when they had it at all, used to be included as a part of the buffet price.
