Big Dipper sits in the shadow of another famous Owensboro landmark but make no mistake this is a spot not to be overlooked on a trip to Owensboro. You order at the window of this nostalgic restaurant, cash is preferred (there is a small surcharge if you use a credit card). We started with dessert, three ice cream sundaes. One hot fudge, one peach and one strawberry. The sundaes were a perfect creamy treat for this 90 plus degree day. The staff was so friendly we took her advice and ordered the pig in a blanket. A juicy hotdog stuffed with cheese wrapped in bacon deep fried and put in a bun with all the toppings. It was delicious! We also got the deep fried cheese because as our granddaughter pointed out the sign said "Try our fried cheese". Our granddaughter really enjoyed them, it was not to disappoint.

Well Worth the wait!! Even lined down the highway. Cannot beat the service and great tasting food.

A long time favorite, we hit this place up everytime we are in town. A burger through the garden is how you order "with everything". Top this off with crunchy onion rings and a chocolate malt. Take cash because they do not do debit cards as a way to keep prices low. Rumor has it that when they opened years ago that the franchised burger joints would close them down but they prove good food never fails. They always have long lines out into the street.

What a fun little place! My husband is from Owensboro and I've heard so much about it. It's my first time in town, so we stopped here right away on the way in to see family. It's very no-frills and old-fashioned. I had a hamburger and tried the "gems" (tater tots) and cheese bites and a seasonal peppermint shake. Sure, it's just a greasy burger, but it was delicious and I can see why a place like this is steeped in nostalgia. The peppermint shake was light and creamy and delicious! It lived up to the hype :)

Fast service, lots of choices. The prices are reasonable for the most part. The food has always been good.

The flurries are pretty dang good. But, my god, the burgers are just nasty. The burgers are somehow worse than BJ's Castle Burger.

I may just promote this as the new diet trend of 2025. I ordered their jalapeño cheddar burger on this visit and upgraded my combo to a large side and a large drink with an additional upgrade to add chili and cheese to my fries. My order came out quick and the service was absolutely superb as usual. I took my meal to the table and hurriedly opened up my side order and the sight hit me hard. The ultimate order of... Chili...Cheese...Fries. it was a heaping mound of fries with loads of chili and cheese. In approval, I inadvertently exclaimed "yeah" too loud and quickly scoped around to see if anyone might have heard me. If they had, I'd be forced to take the meal to go. A hearty mountain of deliciousness. My mind spun through scenarios on how to take this task on. Hire a Sherpa, get a pickaxe, and a pack mule perhaps? No no no. My food would be cold by the time they arrived. Focus and use what is at hand. The Wonder Whip Angel provided me with a plastic fork like the Lady of the Lake. It came out of my white bag like Excalibur. I should have asked for a second fork in case the first one breaks or wears down. I should've had a contingency plan. Curse me for a fool! But wait. I still had that burger to get through. I hurriedly scarfed it down enjoying every bit of it, but distracted the entire time by the thought of getting to my fries. I made it to the last bite and thanked the burger for giving its nutrients to me. I raised my fork high with my right hand and opened the clam shell with my left. For anyone watching from afar, I'm sure they only saw a small tasmanian devil tornado of activity with arms and legs and chili and fries and cheese whipping about. They'd be surprised to know that amidst that chaos, was a happy man enjoying a great side dish at a terrific value thanks to Wonder Whip. Im full. Now sleep.

I called ahead to be sure there was no wait. Beautiful building and vibe but not very crowded for a Saturday night. Was waited on my a wonderful young server by the name of Shelly. Pleasant , great attitude and welcoming when I asked questions about the menu. Now the food was the big issue here. Selected the Black and Brew burger which was describe as having two patties. Yes there were two but doubtful they were the 6 oz each as listed. The brew cheese sauce was very runny and caused the buns to fall apart when I picked it up. Burger was very well done as well. Side of sweet potato waffle fries were placed in a small dish barely allowing for a small handful. Pickles on the burger were an up charge. Definitely did not curb the burger craving. I pushed my reservations aside and ordered the dessert. Went with a slice of strawberry cheese cake. Server said they did not have any last time it was ordered but she would check. Viola! Came back with a slice.. though it was missing the strawberries. Away she went and returned with only a strawberry sauce. At this point I'm all in so I drizzled the sauce over the slice. Went to cut into it only to find the gorgeous looking slice was frozen solid. Ugggg . Walked it to the bar and asked for my check and explained the slice issue. This place has so much potential but is utterly failing on the food side.

I can't believe I'd waited so long. First of all the service is suuuuper friendly. I love the old school decor and the walls lined with the history of this place. Now the food. I tried a double cheeseburger, tator tots, a ham and cheese sandwich, patty melt, AND a chili burger within a span of two days. I guess I'm just intrigued by what gives this joint its longevity. Perhaps if I eat here everyday, I too will absorb some of this longevity. I dunno if fast food works that way. All of the food I've mentioned is super good. The tots are crispy, the burger is tasty and well proportioned, and the ham and cheese sandwich was carefully prepared by a true expert. The patty melt though. I can't even recall the last time I ate a patty melt. But it came out piping hot which I really appreciate about this diner. I can hear the meat sizzling as I wait. A few minutes later, I receive a sandwich with bread beautifully buttered to perfection. I take a bite and THEN decide to peek at its contents. My heart melts like the cheese in this sandwich. Why do I feel this way? Double cheese. She made my patty melt with slices of cheese on BOTH sides of the patty. And it had the delicious grilled onions just kicking yumminess into each bite! But DOUBLE cheese was not expected and to experience this made me happy. I am proud of accomplishing the act of eating this delicious sandwich. I think I should try bigger tasks. This will be the moment I start. After this food nap... maybe.

The oldies jams are still in play and keeping the vibe upbeat. I've never been in here tearing up because that forbidden broken heart love song came on at the wrong time. For example I beta tested the Kentucky Fudge Pecan Pie in a baby sized cup and found that I love it! I also reaffirmed that I have zero allergic reaction to pecans. Furthermore, I discovered that pie crust bits in ice cream are flipping fantastic and something I will include in my extensive list of things I am thankful for come this November's Turkey holiday. Props to the Ice Cream expert whom I had been told crafts these flavors in house. Is it some kind of Ice Cream elf? Maybe. That doesn't even matter. Who or whatever is making this delicacy is doing a great job at creaming this ice with fantastic flavor and ruining my ability to drop this final 4 lbs I'm trying to shed. Try it out and enjoy this wondrous thing! But be warned... the pecans may contain nuts. UPDATE: I just discovered that they offer TATOR TOTS! It should be known just by looking at me that tater tots are my favorite means of delivering potatoes to my belly. This delivery process is further expedited by spooning steaming hot chili and shredding cheese over it. They've titled an entire movie after how I eat chili cheese tots. "Gone in 60 Seconds". I devoured it voraciously and it disappeared. I don't know how it tasted because it was immediately absorbed once it appeared on the counter. I'm sure i enjoyed it though.
