Big Dipper is a staple in Owensboro. Yes, the drive thru line has started to cause congestion on the roads for the past decade or so, but the line always moves quick, and if you are careful, this can be avoided. The milkshakes are great- I always go with the orangesicle. The best part is that their milkshakes still remain under $2, where else can you find that? My other favorite is the pig in a blanket, a hot dog with cheese wrapped in bacon. What more could you want besides one with chili on it- which they added a while back! The Big Dipper is just a good old burger joint. No beating around the bush. Get a burger fries and a shake and you're on you're way. Being right by Moonlite helps with business (I would choose Big Dipper over Moonlite). When it's cold they have the best chili in town. I understand that this place is a local icon, it was busy at 9pm but for the life of me I don't know why. I can describe the food quality in one word..... HORRID! The onion rings were average at best and the cheese burger was simply NASTY. It was a frozen processed patty that tasted like grease and salt. I have had better food in a school cafeteria in a third world country. I love this place! I grew up eating here and now when I have friends or family come to town I make sure to take them to the Big Dipper! What I love most is that my parents and grandparents grew up loving this place and now so do I. Anytime I'm in Owensboro I just have to stop at this place it's a good place to eat for lunch. Great snack foods like grilled cheeses, bologna sandwiches dressed if you like. I recently moved to Owensboro and the Dipper is a great local place with a lot of history. This place is a classic 50s drive thru that hasn't changed much in the last 60 years...which is good. I love the burgers and potato gems. They're just tater tots but they're the best! I also love the pig in a blanket. A hot dog split in half, stuffed with cheese, wrapped in bacon, then deep fried, what's not to love! I've read a couple reviews that say their burgers are chewy or rubbery. I disagree, they add sausage to the patty which gives the burger more bite and a different texture than other burgers but its not off putting and makes the burgers taste unique. By far the best thing is the caramel shake!!!! It's cash only which is a little inconvenient, and it is still fast food, but it's soooo much better than McDonalds...and just as cheap. If you're in Owensboro this is a must try. Get the caramel shake and thank me later. read more

Low prices. The food is fine but not good or elegant. If you don't mind grease you will probably like the burgers and fries. Milkshakes are delicious but not fancy. There are no high end ingredients in anything at the Big Dipper, but for simple drive-thru food shoved out a window, you will be happy with what you find in their brown paper bags. read more

Waited on Parrish avenue for about 20 minutes the last time I went just to get in line at the drive-thru. The burgers are greasy. The tots are usually cooked so long they are like rocks. This is single handedly one of the best little places to eat at, I have gone here since I was 3 and even today you won't be able to find someone who has eaten here and not fallen in love with this little place. The stand is the size of a Hummer and yet they always have a line of cars that puts the Macdonald's next to it to shame then you include the line of people in front of it and you then begin to wonder where do they keep everything and the people are always so friendly and nice you can't help to feel good before you even get your food. If your ever in the area do yourself a huge favor and pick up a hamburger with some of the biggest and best onion rings ever and a delicious shake that will disappear before your even out of the parking lot and to add insult to injury they are cheaper then the Macdonald's, so yeah good job picking a location Macdonald's. Don't believe the hype people. This is a very average dairy bar in a so so part of town. Yes, it is popular and is most always busy but that's because it's a tradition here. I moved here years ago and have ate here enough times to tell ya the truth. Parking is ridiculous.. there is a few spots around the place that if.. IF you are lucky enough to get a spot you probably will be blocked in by some mud covered truck for about fifteen more minutes. You then stand in line a few yards from an extremely busy road getting hit by the smell of diesel and the burnt flesh smell from the business next door until you order your food. The servers are most usually nice and efficient. Your food is delivered fairly fast in paper bag that soaks up the excessive grease oozing from the steaming contents within. DON'T SET THIS BAG ON ANYTHING OF VALUE! Anyway, the food isn't seasoned (gems, fries are salted though) and the infamous burgers are basic frozen burgers similar to JTM burgers are just flopped on a greasy grill while the, what seems to be, 30 workers bang into one another while magically producing a complete order without much error. The drive through is also a funny thing, you see the place is BUSY so to get in line you have to come in eastbound or cross traffic when there is an opening to do so. Welllll, people ride each others bumpers so that they can get off the street and instead of the people in the opposite direction going up and turning around they sit and give you that 'You gonna die' look and throwing up their hands as if we owe them decent courtesy.. wise up Eggheads! So, you order your food.. as fast ya want 'cause this lady that must live in the building itself takes your order and repeats it as if she is a professional lip reader. Some of these people ordering sound like a mix between Ed Asner and Cuckoo Bird and she still gets it. I give them that. Okay, so you get through there and get your food and take it where ever and then everyone exclaims 'You been to the Dipper, aint ya?' NO DUMMY, McDonalds ran out of bags! A lot of people like the Pig in a Blanket.. I thought it was gonna be a chunk of hot dog rolled up in a Pillsbury but turns out to be a whole hot dog wrapped in bacon deep fried and thrown on a toasted bun.. heck they even have shirts for sale with the poor pig on advertising his name sake. Suggested cannibalism makes me irk. So there ya have it.. it's a dairy bar. A fast and Owensboro famous one and I'm glad it's there as people around here couldn't get over losing this place after losing their beloved Executive Inn. This is a real cheap, real fast food joint. thier food is consistantly good. Not great, but good. The burgers are not that good at all. They are, from what im told at the window, a half vegi half meat mix. Their shakes a small but really good. duing lunch and in the evening cars stop on parrish blocking traffic flow because they are so busy. Almost wrecked so many times because of this. people ignore the "no stopping on pavement" sign. drinks come in one size, med with alot of crushed ice. the place need a bigger plot of land.
