I knew from reading reviews that my vacuum would be in good hands at this store but I had no idea that I as the customer would be treated so well. I've never had a car living in the city but thank you Covid- car time in the city. I knew that parking on Austin would be a nightmare so I called the store ahead of time to ask Steve to help me out since i could not park. I went to drop off my Dyson handheld. Steve was meeting me out front. As soon as I turned my back to grab the unit, a police officer quietly approached from behind to write me a ticket. Steve stepped in like such a good human being. He fought for me to which the lovely nypd could not have cared less but Steve continued by saying that he would take care of me and not to worry about anything. I knew what that meant but was mortified because I was having such an awful day. Suffice to say, nothing could be done about nypd- as a woman living in nyc, when I need them, they're absolutely useless but when a person (me) tries to do things right by not double parking, as soon as my back is literally turned, for like, a millisecond, they show up to place a ticket in my windshield. All this to say, when I called today, a few days later to pick up that unit, after my ego healed a bit, Steve did not charge me for my repair which was so unnecessary and also, a good reminder that this is why I choose independently owned stores and that good people are still around. An outstanding local business. I needed a new vacuum for the basement floor and North Shore recommended an entry level canister model that works great and should be reliable. It's also admirably quiet and the sales person demonstrated all the features and answered all questions that I had. I returned to North Shore a day later with two other vacuums that I have; a hand vacuum that had stopped working and an upright that had a burning smell. North Shore offered free no obligation estimates. The upright just needed a belt and the hand vac needed it's motor repaired. Both were taken care of the same day at a VERY reasonable price. I am so glad I found Steve and his repair shop before chucking my beloved Shark freestyle vacuum. Something was wrong with the rotating brush and intake area and my messing around with it only made it worse! I got nowhere with Shark customer service so I turned to North Shore Vacuum and the problem was resolved in 48 hours. Great Service ! Brought my Kenmore vacuum to Northshore in the morning, they had it repaired and back to me the same afternoon and the cost was fair and reasonable. Our vacuum cleaner seemed for a long time like it was getting ready to join one of the weekly processions of other has-been appliances that line the streets on garbage day. It had lost its appetite, had a burnt smell when plugged in, and was considered generally a sad waste of precious space toward the end. I didn't feel quite so bad as I would have were this an appliance we had purchased. Instead, it was one of the more fortunate vacuums which had been rescued from the weekly scrapping by a resourceful do-gooder who happened to be our neighbor and made a gift of it to us due to his surplus and our lack. After a few more weary years in servitude, the inevitable was right around the corner, but fortunately for us (and for the vacuum) so is North Shore Vacuum Corp. Ahhhh, blessed North Shore Vacuum Corp, one of the many unassuming little storefronts only the intrepid or un-self-conscious venture to enter, for who but the lowly among us have nothing better to accomplish with their time but to wearily escort worn-down appliances to such a dreary looking little shop? Yet it is in just such a shop that miracles are performed! And I dare suggest they may be performed here quite regularly! What else could it be than a miracle that our poor wretched vacuum has been given new life? Not just a second chance, either, for it had had that already, mind you. No, this vacuum had been restored to well beyond its youthful vigor! Our vacuum now has an insatiable appetite! See how it growls with ravenous passion as it wolfs down its meals! I did not have an issue with this vendor's work. It was good. He serviced our vacuum, which burnt out because it needed a new filter. So, he ordered the parts and we got the vacuum cleaner back a few days later. However, we were missing essential parts to our vacuum and then some. One of the extensions were not the same extension we had on the vacuum. Apparently, it was replaced with a newer model's extension and two of our parts were missing. Mystery? Two parts that I totally use all the time. When asked what happened, CLUELESS! So, now I have to go and order new parts for my vacuum. So, a word to the wise, if you leave your vacuum at this store to be serviced, leave the parts at home!! You live and learn!! read more

Really nice and helpful guys. I went in looking to buy a vacuum with a bag that I was confident I could clean the inside of because I got fleas in my house. They were very helpful and understood exactly what I was concerned about and showed me how the machine worked and how I could clean it and keep the vacuumed fleas from getting into the machine itself or getting back out into my house. 15 minutes after I came in I was walking out the door with one and it works fantastic! It has better suction than my Dyson and the Dyson is impossible to clean the inside of. Now that I really understand how the vacuum works I think it is disgusting to use most other vacuums because the dirt is not highly filtered so all the fine particles of dirt come out the exhaust. The filtration on the Miele is impeccable. Get a Miele everything else is hype and gimmick. read more

My wife and I have a Hoover Platinum Express upright vacuum (great machine!) that needed servicing. The Hoover was not picking up as well as it used to and developed a musty smell that would come from it when used, even with a new, empty bag installed. I live in Rego Park, NY for over 40 years and had passed the North Shore Vacuum Cleaner store at 73-03 Austin St. many times, but never had a reason to go in before now. About 2 weeks ago I went into the store. Steve was at the counter and I asked him if he could clean and service our vacuum and if so, how much would it cost? Steve said it would be about $70-$75 dollars, gave me a card and said I should bring the unit in. Last Saturday afternoon 10/31 I did just that. Steve asked me what was wrong with the unit, took my contact information and gave me a claim check. He told me to call him on Monday. Work got in the way Monday and I didn't have a chance to call, so I called Steve late Tuesday morning and asked for an update. Steve told me to come in after 3:30 or so and that the Hoover would be ready. Well, to make a long story a little longer - Steve was done with our vacuum in less than 2 business days, he gave me a small jar of vanilla-scented potpourri (at no charge!) to sprinkle into the new bags when we change them, charged me $60 + tax (less than his estimate - I love it!) and sent me home with a good-as-new machine. I want to tell you - Steve was as good as his word on everything he said and his service and work were impeccable. In this day and age of throwaway, mass marketed and sub-standard products it is a pleasure to go into a small, family owned store where the owner's honesty is evident and the quality of his work shines through. I hope Steve and North Shore Vacuum stay around for a long, long time to come. Steve's shop is precisely the type that makes a neighborhood just that - and not another cold, corporate showcase mall where everyone you meet is nameless and interchangeable. My vacuum died while in use due to overheating...it went "pop" in the outlet. I called and Steve said he could fix it. I thought I'd be waiting a week because I'd be at work in the city and not able to pick it up. When I got there, Steve said he'd replace the cord and filter and it would be ready in 20 minutes! I did some errands and picked it up within the hour. I just used it and it works great. And the new plug doesn't get hot as Hades while in use. (Steve's advice: Change that filter more often to prevent overheating.) This is real old-school neighborhood service...the kind that's disappearing. The price on this repair was completely reasonable for parts and service. I had already started looking for a new vacuum online when I thought to check with North Shore Vacuum. Glad I did! My 10-year old Miele vacuum cleaner died, or so I thought, a few weeks ago. When I called the owner Steve, he indicated he'd be willing to check to see if it could be repaired. Not only did he give me free estimate for the repair, but the cost savings was substantial over purchase of replacement. What a great experience! We got a quarter stuck in the tube of our Sanitaire vacuum and couldn't get it out after an hour of trying. I called a place in Queens a bit more convenient for us and they said the repair would "take less than 10 minutes" but set us back $39.95. That sounded steep. I called North Shore and Steve said on the phone that it would cost $15-25 depending on how bad the clog was. I went in there with my two kids this afternoon and Steve took about 30 seconds to get the offending quarter out of the vacuum. Happy to pay him for his expertise, I asked how much it would cost. He said he only asked that I take my kids out for ice cream because they "seemed like good kids" and it was a nice day. We chatted for a few more minutes about Queens and raising families, I convinced him to let me buy a package of vacuum bags, and left the store beaming ear to ear. Haven't had such an affirming small-town-feeling retail experience in years. I will definitely go back next time I need a repair or new vacuum cleaner. read more
