Dr Schulkin is the BEST! I have been coming here for over 20 years & though the staff has changed over the years, Dr Schulkin & Chona (Office Manager) are there to always offer the highest quality of care & service. I went in November 2022 because my eyes were red & itchy (which was outside of the "normal annual" exam). Dr Schulkin was so kind to take his time to examine my eyes, gave me instructions how to settle it down with a warm towel, eye drops, etc, & to return the following week if the redness continued. I was expecting to receive a bill for $100 (as the receptionist had informed me before the appointment), & was pleasantly surprised to find out upon exit that I didn't have to pay for anything! I was thankful to Dr Schulkin! My eyes got better after a few days following Dr Schulkin's instructions. Dr Schulkin is a small business, local office, so I'm happy to support them. Additionally, I support North County Optometry by purchasing my eyeglasses from them. I know that I could order a pair at Costco for cheaper, but I always make it a point to order from Dr Schulkin's Office. My favorite brands from his office are Kliik (Denmark) & ProDesign (also Denmark). I am not getting any promo for recommending these brands, haha; they're just my personal recommendations. Does NOT accept new Medi-Cal clients (even though they're listed that they do), and then argued with me about updating their status so they don't waste their or my time. To the office manager that answered the phone; it never pays to argue with a potential client. You could've been gracious and just said, "thank you for the feedback, I'll try and get that updated". Maybe you should let someone else answer the phone that is better suited/ has better people skills? read more

Great first impression with doctor and office staff. Was told having progressive lenses would take getting used to. I tried for months and finally had to come back to office to explain what I was experiencing. That's when I had a bad experience with office. There are ways to explain things to a customer without accusing them of lying or making them feel stupid. I understand getting lenses and glasses made for each person isn't an exact science, but having worn glasses all my life, this just didn't feel right. I was told to come back in 6 months. I really liked my eye exam today The assistant who did the initial testing was so kind and the Dr. was also exceptional. They have a new retina camera from Nikon (OPTOS) that is absolutely fabulous. It's a cam 't miss for diagnosing the retinal area. The tests performed by the Dr. seemed much more concise than I remember, likely because of the new forms of testing. Dr. Shulkin is great, I've been taking my daughter to him since she was in 2nd grade and now she's in high school. On the other hand, staff are not so helpful. I asked them if I can get an emergency contact lense for my daughter, she told me she'll give me a call back because she needs to ask the doctor. Hours later and still nothing, so I called them back. She told me he's been really busy that he couldn't ask him even in between patients? I don't know how long she's been there but the other staffs used to be really helpful. My whole family has been going to Dr. Shulkin for as long as I remember. He's very calm, patient, friendly, smiley, and funny. There's just this relaxed demeanor about him that puts you at ease... especially when you have to do that stupid look-at-the-red-dot-and-prepare-to-have-a-blast-of-air-hit-your-eye test. See, it's exams like these where you really want to have a good doctor guiding you through, and Dr. Shulkin is that doctor! For the longest time I've been holding out on getting glasses. Dr. Shulkin still says I don't *HAVE* to get them, but that my vision for long distances would be better, especially for certain activities like... SCHOOL. Crap! I still have a couple years of college left, so right when he said that I knew I had to give in. But that's another great thing about the Dr... he's not pushy at all! He totally gave me the option on whether to hold out on glasses or not, which is really nice! I hate salesmen... especially from health professionals, because then I question their integrity and whether they truly care about my health or not. Well so I started checking out their frames, and a couple of their receptionists guided me step-by-step on what I was looking for and what frames suited my face shape the best. Dr. Shulkin rocks. Kevin B who gave a 'one star' review because he didn't get a quote from the front desk girls...he's probably just poor; plain and simple. That's OK bro, I'm poor too, but I'm not all stink about it. Believing a flotilla full of guys washing up at La Jolla shores is a lost tour boat from Spain is more realistic than believing that Kevin B couldn't get a price for an exam. Yes, Dr. Shulkin's office girls are kind of a 'B-Team', but they are nice and they will work to get you the right answer. Dr. Shulkin has an excellent manner. He gives a detailed exam which he takes the time to explain, and he invests in the most modern equipment. I've taken eye exams in TJ where Dr. Pablo asks me if I'm seeing the front or rear of the donkey on the other side of the mountain, then tells me to take my pick of the reading glasses from the donation bin at the grocery store, so I know bad optometrists. Dr. Shulkin is not one of them. A good guy, running a good business, and I don't like to see him getting flamed. Meanwhile at Dr. Shulkin's office I have always been able to receive my PRESCRIPTION with ease. I have been going here for years and he has always been attentive to all my eye care needs. The front office staff is knowledgeable in the industry and helpful with my insurance questions. Dr. Shulkin is always very detailed and thorough during his exams. He always answers all my questions and doesn't rush me out of his exam room. It's very family friendly, when I went in for an appointment he had just examined a whole family, one kid was pretty young and all were smiling. I love Dr. Shulkin! A friend of mine referred me about six years ago or so, maybe longer, and I've been going to him ever since. I tend to be on the inquisitive side and Dr. Shulkin never tires of all the questions I ask and he's a really funny guy. As odd as it sounds, I have a good time while I'm there. They also have a lot of varied hours so that you can stop in before or after work. The office is located in a strip mall but he has been there for a long time so don't let that scare you off. They accept a few different insurance plans and they do have some reasonably priced frames as well. read more

I went to North County Optometry in April 2016 for my annual eye exam and glasses replacement. I have a great experience with Dr. Mitchell S. Shulkin because he is very detail and answered all the questions and concerns I had, he went over my eye exam above and beyond his duties to tell me about the health of my eyes. However, I had a bad experience with his staff with my daily glasses and sunglasses prescription they did. I brought my Maui Jim frame for the sunglasses and they ruined it. The frame got crazed and I do not recall when I picked them the lenses were outside the frame on the bottom corners. I came back 4 days later to tell them and the Office Manager (I believe), did not believe me. She told me that I may have left the sunglasses in the car and got damaged with the high temperatures. First of all, at home and at work I park in a garage so no sunlight is hitting my car during the day unless I go somewhere over the weekend and there is no garage. Second, they did not offer any refund, guarantee or any advice to fix the frame, basically told me that I need to buy a new one and could get it there (really?). Lastly to make it worse, she offered to send the sunglasses again to their outside lab but didn't guarantee the frame will not break completely. I am disappointed with their customer services treatment and I don't plan to return there. Dr. Mitchell S. Shulkin should hire more professional staff. I went to LensCrafter and they adjusted the Maui Jim sunglasses lenses but they still come the frame on and off. At least LensCrafter has their labs inside their locations and frames are not send to low quality labs. read more

I got a frame from NCO, because I couldn't find a frame I liked where I usually get my glasses. The girl helped me choose the frame was nice and helpful and I was happy to find a frame I liked. From this point on, they went from a 4-star to 1-star. First the quality of the frame is inferior, despite it was a Valentino made in Italy and priced at $256. After only about a month, it defected. It looked like the frame was coated with plastic films and the films on the arms were distorted due to heat (maybe the hot weather). NCO agreed to replace the frame, but when they saw the frame they questioned if I left my glasses in the car - one star off for how they treated customers not because of the quality of the frame. My old frame is about half of the price and it does NOT defect during hot weather. After they replaced the lenses, I noticed minor scratches on the frame and the girl said they were probably designs. I cannot say if the frame came like that or it was scratched when they worked on it because I didn't see the frame before they worked on it. What really mattered was the glasses didn't work right especially the left side. They said the left side was too high, so they adjusted it. Still I felt something was off and was told to try them on for a few days or go back to where I got the lenses to adjust the glasses. I also had to tell them the frame had some white dots on it. They said it was stains and cleaned them off. One star off for lousy work. The staff needs more technical training and needs to pay attention to details. Before I left, I asked if the frame defects again will I get another replacement. I was told NO, it was one time replacement only. You would think there is a one-year warranty from Valentino. I could have taken 1/2 star off for not showing interest to work with customers. I'd tried the glasses for a few days, but I always felt the lenses were dirty. I constantly cleaned them, but it didn't help. When I looked closely, I found fine crack lines on the lenses. I call NCO and said they may have damaged my lenses. They told me to go back where I made the lenses to replace or fix the lenses. Another star off for asking other store to take responsibility for your mistake. Since I had other issues before, so I used the one-time free replacement already. Out of desperation, I went to Eyelux in 4S Ranch, my regular optometry. They confirmed the lenses were crazed most likely due to heating. The lenses should have been covered when NCO tried to take them off the old frame. There is no way to repair crazed lenses and Eyelux said they'd call the lab to see if they would replace the lenses for free for the second time. I am grateful I don't have to pay $455 (50% off from Eyelux for 2nd pair) or try to ask NCO to pay, which I don't believe they would do from this experience, for the new lenses. The receptionist said they sent me an email changing the time and I asked about a courtesy call or text - she then said it could have gone to my spam; I looked and not there. I'm an Electrical Engineer who's always questioning technical procedures, and Dr. Shulkin has always given me the right answers in a knowledgeably, friendly, and caring way. I've been wearing eyeglasses for over 25 years, and I've never met any optometrist so caring, so humorous, and so technically bright as Dr. Shulkin. About 10 months ago, I needed to have my right eye examined that couldn't be closed due to a Bell's Palsy issue, and since our vision insurance didn't cover his services back then, I didn't mind paying him out of my own pocket and have a comprehensive eye examination to make sure the right eye was in good conditions at all levels. read more

I've been seeing Dr. Shulkin since 1995 and he's amazing! After I had been "shot" in the eye by that stupid air puff machine by 6 different optometrists over 6 years and always left in tears, Dr. Shulkin took a lot of time to talk me through the process. He explained the importance of the glaucoma test and made the eye exam almost fun. Dr. Shulkin earned my loyalty when I was a child and still has it now that I'm an adult. I even made sure to schedule all of my appointments with him when I was back at home for college breaks. There are plenty of optometrists that work 25 minutes closer to my home now, but it's well worth the drive to see Dr. Shulkin. On another note -- their frame selection is great! I am one of those lucky adults that has a head closer to the size of a teenager, so I have a hard time finding frames that fit. Dr. Shulkin's office always has at least a few frames that I like and that fit. read more

I had read some good reviews and bad reviews about this place when looking for an optometrist that accepts Medi-cal. It was definitely one of the better places. I went in with a positive attitude and was pleasantly surprised. We didn't wait long at all. They were able to fit me and my daughter one after the next. The doctor was very nice & professional. He lets you know what he's going to do. Pretty relaxing atmosphere. He was very extensive in his exam and answered my questions and my 17 yr old daughter's questions as well. The receptionists were all very nice. They gave us our prescriptions without any issues or fees. The only CON is that the glasses they had available that were covered by Medi-cal were very outdated. It would be nice to have some better options especially for young people (they don't want to be wearing granny glasses). They were ordering new ones so hopefully they'll have some better options soon. read more

Dr. Shulkin and his staff at North County Optometry are fantastic. I just moved to San Diego this past year, and I was nervous about finding a good optometrist. I have very bad eye sight, and have been through many different optometrists both good and bad, but Dr. Shulkin is by far the best I have found. His staff is very personal and helpful, and Dr. Shulkin himself is wonderful. I have been using the same brand of contacts for years, even though they weren't incredibly comfortable, because I thought it was my only option since my eyes are very sensitive. Dr. Shulkin convinced me to try a couple of new brands, and I'm so glad he did! He was so patient working with me, tweaking my prescription and going through trial after trial and several appointments to find something that I was really happy with. I can't believe how much time he took with me, and it shows how invested he is in making sure his patients receive great care. Five stars is not enough for Dr. Shulkin and North County Optometry. read more

I've been to North County Optometry from January 2016 to currently (March 2017) and I really enjoy Dr. Shulkin. He is a good doctor and is patient to listen to all that I have to say. He answers my questions thoroughly and I know he cares about my eyes, not just my wallet. Dr. Shulkin was kind and understanding when I had to bring my kids with me one of my visits. Doctor has a policy (which is not told to patients) that if over 15 minutes late for appointment it is automatically canceled (staff used snippy tone of voice about it). Was 22 minutes late after problems in traffic of a 45 minute 25 mile drive and doctor refused to do eye exam. Yet, other member of the family had to wait in the office 20 minutes for eye appointment a month before this, after being told in a snippy tone of voice by staff that doctor was running late. Apparently staff feels its OK to disrespect patients on a regular basis, and doctor feels he can be as late as he wants but loyal 20 year patient can't be a few minutes late due to unforeseen circumstances during long distance drive to see him. Over the years have waited numerous times for the doctor to start appointment. Draw your own conclusions. read more
