I have never written a review on Yelp but my harrowing experience at Nook last night has compelled me to do so about this restaurant where I not only had the worst customer service experience of my life but also in turn had the worst personal experience of a Canadian since I've been living in the country these 3 years. My husband and I decided to pick up some take out from Nook for the first time (5 mins walk from home and great reviews helped us make our location selection). We went in and placed an order for olives, ricotta crostini, spag bol and prosciutto pizza. We waited for the food (pizza was done way before the rest and sat on the counter = slight panic but let's not judge too early), got home and pasta had zero (and I mean ZERO) seasoning so was quite tasteless and the pizza was STONE cold (not cooled on the 5min walk home cold), but more importantly had not been cooked for long enough, prosciutto and arugula was totally raw - just a few more minutes to crisp that up would have done the trick . As foodies in search of a stellar Italian take out dinner to pair with our 05 Tignanello we decided to take these two dishes back. And here's where it all goes pear-shaped. I ran in with the two boxes and spoke to the server who helped us place the order half an hour before, she did not apologize and proceeded to tell me "perhaps your taste buds weren't suited to the food" and given this there wasn't much she could do. Now as a server myself it is not the first time I've seen this 'respond to your customer in a way that makes it seem like it's their mistake not the restaurant's' routine and needless to say it is not the best way to appease your customer and build your business's reputation! So I interjected at this point, explaining that I am a server and I understood what she was doing here and it was not going to work on me (what I was looking for was an apology and an offer to replace the food with fresh items or a refund, which I think is fair?). By this point the manager Brad was standing next to her listening and interceded and said "well we WERE going to be nice to you but not anymore, you need to F**K off". I couldn't believe my ears!! (And bear in mind the restaurant was full and this was right in front of guests). I asked "I beg your pardon?" He said "Yes that's right F**K off out of here" I said I did not think this was an appropriate way to speak to a customer and he said he didn't care and then THREATENED me saying "if you don't leave here very soon we're going to have a huge problem, so you need to F**K off". (I feel that it is necessary here to clarify that I am a sane, rational person and I had not done ANYTHING to provoke this kind of reaction. Both my husband and I work as servers at (different) Gastown restaurants that are well reviewed for food and service. We understand the industry to a certain extent and that probably makes us more critical than most but I want to emphasise that I am NOT exaggerating what happened here!!). At this point one of the two chefs cooking (Mike) interceded to speak with me and Brad walked away. While at least Mike spoke to me in a civil manner and listened to my complaint he said there wasn't much he could do and if I were to speak with the owner he would probably also treat me the same way(!!!). To paraphrase the rest of the conversation with Mike I was told that they never get complaints about this particular pizza so it must be me being difficult (I hate when people talk about how they've been to Italy when comparing Italian food in North America, but I have - I'm a Brit and have holidayed there many times, so I've had plenty of Prosciutto pizza and it is not served cold and raw there so my pizza expectations at least have some foundation), that they don't need my business as they are very busy anyway so they weren't really prepared to do anything. I pressed him saying this was unfair as this means they've basically stolen from me as I have no refund and no food (Brad had taken it from me a few minutes earlier), so Mike arranged a refund and I left. Incidentally we went to get take out from Incendio in Gastown instead and their pizza and pasta was a million times better than Nook's could ever have been, I just wish we'd known they delivered to the West End and we would have avoided this fiasco!!! The food wasn't even that bad at Nook - some seasoning on one dish and a little more time in the oven on the other could have made this a decent (but not great) meal. Even if I HAD been rude I don't think it could EVER justify me being spoken to in this manner, to go as far as being threatened - which, OK, it's not like I feared for my life or anything, but still is un-nerving when you're a five foot two woman and these words are coming from a six foot man. I have never been treated this way in Canada and as someone who works in the industry I am saddened that someone like this is representing its wonderful food industry. read more

This review is in response to Nook's mgmt response to a guest named Emily A. Firstly, Nook was one of the first restaurants I went to in Vancouver this winter as I moved here and stayed in a hotel in the West End. Certainly the quaint space, great product and excellent service is what made it a go to reference as I hosted guests at the restaurant I manage. Being involved in the industry across Canada for almost 2 decades, I understand the importance of both product quality assurance and service protocol that create a place to be good or great. I thoroughly appreciated both my service and product when I frequented Nook, and am sadly disappointed that the thread of comments I see clearly points to a fault that none can survive in the competitive industry we work in without a clear belief that your customer is your business. Regardless if a chef thought his product was without fault, or if a server dismissed a valid comment from a patron there's one thing that's been missed; customer service. I feel that sometimes food reviews and or the comments on boards such as YELP serve strictly to those epic great or bad moments, and realize it actually serves more a role than this. For me it has served an awareness of how little some establishments embrace the notions of customer service, assuming that the will always be in a position to pick and choose their patrons, be their own marketplace. We all know, this isn't the case...being in the service industry means you are a hospitable and gracious host to individuals who in part as patrons are why you are in business. i regret I won't be a returning patron to Nook, great experiences aside because on principle I have to recognize that mgmt that curses at their patrons is enough, one has to draw the line somewhere right? read more

Came here on a quiet Tuesday night last week, have seen the place for a while and finally stopped in. It is quite small and cozy feeling inside, staff seemed pretty chilled out and easy going, that can be good or bad but since it is not fine dining experience it was fine with me, although took about fifteen minutes from when we were seated to have our first drink in front of us, so if you are looking for promptness this might not be the place. You can see what is going on behind the bar and in the kitchen which is again good or bad. It is good that it is interested, but not so good that you never see the bartender wash his hands between making food on a panini grill, handling dirty plates, taking payment, etc. As far as the food goes, it was definitely ok. The meatballs as an antipasto were well seasoned and presented well. The pizza was oily and has a crispy texture sort of like Pizza Hut. As a big true Neapolitan pizza fan, it wasn't on par with other places that follow a traditional recipe and cooking approach like Campagnola, Antica Niclii, etc. It was ok, just not really better than the pizza hut/dominoes/etc. of the world. Overall I would say the experience was ok. If I was hungry I might stop by, but if I was going to take someone else I would take them where the service is quick and food is more true to the style I expect. I just popped in here today with my daughter on my day off. She was begging me, saying "Daddy, please, you MUST try this place!". Well being thade. e Italian guy that I am, I couldn't refuse any longer. Saying, yes, was the best choice I ever made. The style of this place is very New York like which I can relate to. We went with the classic meat lovers style pizza which just melts in your mouth with so much flavour you'll be dying for more! Our meal came to about 23$ (tip included). What a perfect lunch option that I recommend to any and everyone. read more

I absolutely love dining at Nook! Every visit is a delightful experience, and the quality of the food is consistently excellent. The ambiance is charming, making it a great spot to relax and enjoy a meal. The food is nothing short of amazing! I'm particularly fond of their Boscaiola pasta and prosciutto pizza, both are simply divine. I also look forward to their "suggestion of the week," which never fails to impress. I really wanted to like this place. I had heard from people in the neighbourhood that this was a great place but everything, from the service and the attitude to the food was substandard. I do not understand what the fuss is about and I certainly can't imagine waiting in line to get in! The food may have Italian names but there is nothing Italian about the finished product. I always get nervous when I enter an empty restaurant at dinner time. We sat at the bar as to not stand out as the only people seated at a table. We ordered some fancy pizza. The owner/bartender was snotty about pizza's if you can believe it. So we get of fancy pizza and the crust was great and thank god because there were hardly any toppings. This really is a "nook", tucked away on busy Denman Street. We had to wait 20 minutes for a table...not too bad. The food made it worthwhile. My friend loved the pizza & my pasta dish was excellent with just the right amount of spiciness in the sauce. The arugula salad to start was super fresh. With a nice bottle of red & good ambience we really enjoyed the night. read more

Nice little place in the west end of Vancouver just off Robson Street. Servers were knowledgeable and great with recommendations. Food was very pleasant but found the music to be too loud to have a nice conversation with those across the table. Big fan of their pizza, tiramisu, and caprese salad...yummmmm. Must try once....no matter what others said about no ventilation or out of fennel....it is a cozy place to have a great meal without worry about doing the dishes...feels like home. read more

Hands down the best pizza in Vancouver. Food is also good (pasta etc), but the main attraction here is the pizza. Must try: Margherita and Prosciutto pizzas, the best out of all of them in my opinion. read more

Their fresh pasta is amazing...especially the gnocchi. The fire oven pizzas are also delicious! Great service too :)
