At Nogi we discovered the BEST sushi I have tasted in many years, while celebrating our wedding anniversary. The ambience was charming, and unique, the meal was exquisite (Bluefin & Yellowtail Toro, tuna, salmon, et al., all of which melted in the mouth, as well as delicious sashimi and truly excellent "standard" and specialty rolls, and ESPECIALLY delicious Tamago...which constituted our dessert as we could not physically eat another bite!). The hospitality at Nogi was absolute perfection. This clean, intimate, inviting establishment is run with care, positivity, and a clearly deep affection for the art of preparing and serving sushi, without even a hint of pretension. 10/10. The hype is real. If able, I will definitely be returning for omakase. (Note: the itamae seemed to have overheard that my wife was having a little trouble with the generously portioned nigiri and very helpfully cut the last few pieces just for her; the rest of the meal was served traditionally. Came here one evening to try this place out. It's small with not alot of seating so reservations would be required outside of lockdown. Service was good. Food takes a little bit to get, especially if they are busy but that comes when you get fresh quality food. They had some typical choices and not so typical. Best takeout sushi I've had in a long time (maybe ever)! We ordered takoyaki, a salmon special roll, 2 classic salmon rolls, and a shrimp tempura roll. They were quite generous with the fish we received (as you can see in the picture I provided). The rice texture was perfect and the fish tasted fresh and delicious. The Takoyaki and Shrimp tempura roll were also great and helped us fill up before getting to the more expensive items. We will definitely be back! read more

Came here on a recommendation from friends. I was super excited to see that Atascadero is stepping up their sushi game. Chef Nogi and his family were very nice! You can tell from the quality of the sushi that everything was fresh. My favorite thing was their Albacore Toro! $5 apiece because it's difficult to procure right now but completely worth it. Due to the pandemic, they only have 4 outdoor tables available. Luckily they now take reservations. I wouldn't recommend this place if you have a party of more than 4 people, as there isn't enough seating at this time. Otherwise, solid spot to get sushi! read more

I was so pleasantly surprised how good our meal was at Nogi! As out-of-towners from LA, we have eaten some pretty damn good sashimi and nigiri sushi in our lives and when I saw how many rolls were on the menu, I was worried about what kind of sushi we were eating. You know, there's the, "OMG, I totally LOVE sushi (proceeds to order tempura, California roll, dragon roll, and anything but un-sauced fish)!" And then there's tasting the delicate flavor of the freshest fish, understanding that the chef will dress the fish with whatever sauce it might need, so there's no need to add extra, etc. I think Nogi hits on both notes, which is a smart business plan! The 'tempura and roll ordering' delegation in our party seemed pleased with what they ordered. We were in love with some of the special items that night: Wild King Salmon (not easy to find wild salmon nigiri), Blue Fin Tuna (ridiculously good!), and Uni (so fresh and tasty!). On the regular menu, the Mackerel and Scallop were also delicious. We dined outside in a lovely little courtyard (I think the restaurant only has 4 or 5 tables outside and is super small inside); reservations are a must. Service was nice and friendly (one of chef's daughters). They also have a nice, albeit small, selection of sake and beer. What more could you ask for?? Look at the stellar reviews and know that you are getting quality GENEROUS cuts of freshness. The chirashi cuts were especially thick and satisfying. We were just passing through Atascadero from SoCal to NorCal and hoped the in-between north of San Luis Obispo wouldn't be a food desert and we are finding very good eats along the way!! We had the takoyaki, tempura mix (shrimp and veggies), miso soup, eel roll, rainbow roll, and three specials consisting of: bluefin oro, salmon skin roll, and I believe it was a bluefin tenderloin. my friend ordered two kinds of rolls for himself but I cannot remember those nor did I try them. I have to say that I loved every bit of it. The miso soup tasted authentic and the best I have had out here and really in general. The bluefin oro special they had that day was my favorite of everything. The meat melted in your mouth and burst with so much flavor. The nice part is that after eating all these dishes, I did not feel sick like I normally do with sushi. It is prepared very well and you can tell right away. You leave feeling full and not feeling sick or with an upset stomach. It really stands out as an authentic and delicious place to get sushi. Additionally, upon walking in the owners greeted us and welcomed us in. The woman serving us checked in on us and was very kind and humorous. The chef greeted us and chatted with us as well. Both are kind and friendly people. The atmosphere was welcoming inside and inviting on the outside. There is not too much seating to be sure to either get there early or do what we did and make a reservation. Full discretion, this is mostly a takeout place. The restaurant could sit maybe 4 people total but the flavors and service make it beyond worth it. We live over 15 mins away and we would pick ordering from here and eating at home or on a picnic than eating in at any other sushi place in SLO. this is the best Sushi in Santa Cruz County. It's a tiny restaurant run by a couple. The food is so good you usually can't get in. You need a reservation at least a week in advance, unless you hit a lucky night when they are not so busy. They do a lot of takeout orders. I prefer to eat in the restaurant, for the service and no dishes to wash. But if I can't , takeout is still wonderful. They're not open late (only until 8) and they open on Wed-Sat. I had a wonderful time at nogi's tonight. We heard it from my dad who was at costco getting glasses and an employee told him about this place. Tonight, we decided to give it a try. We tried to do it a week or so ago, but there were booked up. My mom called yesterday to get a reservation for tonight and we got it at 5 PM. We got there and it was a nice place with limited seating. The menu was also limited (little disappointed, but still had really good stuff) There was a special tonight with the egg rolls. After we got our sakes and diet coke, we had egg rolls and some of what my parents ordered. I was amazed of the whole eggrolls and it was really awesome. I ordered the crunch tempura roll and I was very impressed with the roll as well. The flavor and texture was spot on. My parents got the sashimi platter. After that, I ordered their sashimi bowl. There was 2 pieces of rolls including tamago. (sweet egg) This dinner made me happy. I ended eating the yellowtail special while my parents finished with the king salmon to finish our appetite. The place is family owned. When I was there, There was the daughter, mother, and the chef. Those 3 are the ones who managed the restaurant. They have their private spot upstairs as well. They were so friendly and nice. We complemented them at the end of the meal. We also saw some people who had to go bags. They gave them a nice size to go plate compared to goshi in paso robles. (Goshi is good to dine, but was disappointed for to go.) I give the family props on how they created a great dining experience in Atascadero. They are opened Wednesdays thru Saturdays and also open for lunch on Sundays and then closed Sunday nights, Mondays and Tuesdays. I will recommend this to friends because if they are looking for good sushi, this is the place. I know this place is limited for seating, but this is the spot when it comes to have a fun time and also talking to the family here.
