The variety of food and bakery are awesome. But the men's bathroom is always disgusting. Looks as if it is not inspected hourly or even daily like the others grocery stores. this store is always hard to shop for me. There's always too many things in the way hard to get through the isles people stalking and appropriately... And the checkers are not the friendliest. There's one in particular Alino, who is very unfriendly. He is very distracted doing his job. What I don't understand about this place is, they never offered a bag your groceries anymore. read more

Out of all the grocery stores in Atascadero I feel the most safe when I shop here. They have taken safety protocols very seriously during this pandemic. Do people still filter in not wearing a mask? Yes, but in terms of my own experiences shopping there it's been a rarity. I love how they've set up the waiting lines for the register. They did it well and they did it smart. They have "stand here" stickers on the floor leading up to the registers and before you go to one you have to wait for the monitor to read you a number for when the register is ready. Only one at a time and you never have to worry about someone unloading their groceries while you're still fumbling for your card. It's fantastic. The customer service is phenomenal during these trying times. While the lines do get quite long for the register, they have you moving at a steady pace. I've been at the back of the line before, way out near the sushi section and the lines gone down in less than 10. The store is always clean and everything always looks neat. The employees here really put their all into making this place look great and you can see their efforts. This is the only place I like to shop at in the pandemic. Prices are good, not great and they offer some delightful organic options at good prices that makes my heart soar. read more

I called Smart and Final's corporate office this morning who referred me to the Atascadero store manager, Richard Towers. I called five separate times only to have the phone ring once and then go dead each time. Let me preface by saying that I know it's a stressful time for all first responders, including our grocery store workers. However, all of Smart and Final's social media posts reference how grateful the company is for its customers. Apparently, Tina at the Atascadero store hasn't received that message. She was extremely rude and condescending to my husband last Saturday. He is approaching 80 and has early stage Alzheimer's disease. She literally yelled at him for putting our recycable bag on her counter commenting "now you've contaminated my counter that I just disinfected" and made some smart ass remark that she didn't know "where our bag had been". When he asked where he should put the bag to load the groceries, she said to "put it on the floor or hold it". Classy response. We witnessed her yell at a young Hispanic man walking into the store that he "couldn't come in without a mask" and to "read the sign out front". Even we had not noticed a sign out front but were wearing masks. The poor guy turned around and left the store. Yet, two unmasked people came in behind him and nothing was said to them. She also made some snarky remark about kicking my husband out of the store for not following the rules. Somebody please send Tina back to a refresher course on public relations. The COVID stay-at-home order has brought out the best in people and, in this case, the worst. Take her off checkstand number one. There is absolutely no reason to be berated going to the damn grocery store, especially for a senior citizen with health challenges. I'm angry at her and even more disappointed in myself that I didn't leave my groceries on her "now contaminated" counter and exit the store empty handed. I've tried to support this store since it opened, but my shopping experience on April 18 was not "Smart" but was "Final". You'll never have the opportunity to treat us poorly again. Well I just noticed at my previous review was in 2016. Oh my gosh it's now 2020. Smart & Final is a wonderful place to shop. We have many choices here in Atascadero and this place really gets my vote. We are in the middle of this pandemic and all of the employees wear masks and they request all people who come into the store to wear masks. That's really caring for everybody and I really like it. Now the product their vegetables fruits and everything in the produce area is fantastic. I can always get plenty to cook a great meal but I'm happy. They have everything I need to cook a meal and they have it often in smaller or larger portions depending upon whether it's a product to use a lot. Their meat is always there in available, which is not the case and all the other stories I've been in, so I'm really happy with Smart & Final there are nice people who help guide you around the prices are very reasonable I can get my steak chicken or pork anytime I want and I get all the fresh fruits and vegetables I could possibly want. Yes occasionally there's a thing here in there that might be sold out oh, but there's always plenty of choices and I recommend this place read more

I didn't think Smart & Final could get any worse, I thought the employees needed a new store manager. Well they got one and she's terrible. Most of the seasoned staff who worked throughout the pandemic are gone. I found out today that my favorite meat department lady quit last week and the sweet bakery woman is no longer with us. Today's meat guy completely blew me off when I asked about the ad, they barely had any of the cold cases stocked and you could see the built up grime in the empty voids. Someone is going to get sick. Guess I'll be shopping in Slo or Paso from here on out because there's zero reason to shop at this store.A store manager who's rarely there and drunk or loaded when he was there was better than the new woman. We've shopped here since they opened the store a few years ago. In the beginning it was excellent. Then it went down to a bit better than ok. Recently it has risen to being very good overall. We hope that this continues and enjoy shopping here again, even during this strange pandemic time. read more

Two cashiers, six or more people in each line. First thing you smell is shit emanating from the restroom. Gross.

This place is so annoying to go to. Every time I go there there is one checker with a bunch of people waiting in line. I mean every time I go in. I try really hard not to go here. I keep hoping something will change but it has been the same since it first opened. I don't advise going here unless you're desperate and you don't mind standing in line for a long time to pay for your food. The only line that was open the last time I got there with the 10 items or less. Of course that means everyone had way more than 10 items in their cart. read more

I've read many reviews similar to the one I'm about to post about the customer service at this store. I understand that we are in difficult times and I greatly appreciate those who work in our grocery stores, however, this store has consistently poor customer service (specifically from one, younger, female checker). It always appears to be an inconvenience for their employees to check out our groceries, let alone help us bag them. Most of the time our order is checked out and shoved down for us to bag ourselves, which is fine if your shopping at Food 4 Less, but Smart and Final doesn't even ASK if you'd like bags!! This has been my experience more than once. Having worked in the grocery business myself for over 6 years, this rude behavior and poor customer service would have never been tolerated. I'm no fan of this store and won't be returning. Reading the review from the woman whose elderly husband was chastised for placing his reusable bag on the bagging terminal sealed the deal for me. Retrain your employees Smart and Final....they make it an extremely unpleasant place to shop. read more

Cool store, loooooonngg waits in line. This is a regular problem. Two registers open with 10+ people waiting is not a good business model.

I give the store 3 because as I see in the other reviews people complaining about long waits in lines to pay. Most annoyingly I see customers going thru the 10 or LESS items register with a full cart of food while people behind them stand there with half dozen items, sometimes one loaf of bread. Upon asking the cashier if I'm reading the 10 items or LESS sign incorrectly and expressing dismay at the customers who blatantly ignor the sign, the cashiers NEVER have an answer. They just shrug their shoulders and keep on working. Why bother have a quick check out lane if you can't adhere to the option? I'll still shop there but will continue asking until one of the cashiers can give me an answer. Shame on management not to instruct cashiers to redirect customers with $100 worth of food to ring up. read more

This is one of the best Smart & Finals I have shopped at because of their selection. Since moving to town, I have been shopping here as my primary store. I only need to go to other stores once in a while for specialty items, but this S&F seems to have almost everything we need. They are a little short on the yogurt selection, but make up for it in other areas. read more

I usually never write reviews but one employee at the Smart & Final in Atascadero made me change my mind. Your cashier, Thomas, provided excellent customer service from beginning to end. I know these are rough times for everyone and a lot of people are on edge. Thomas was professional and extremely friendly during my transaction. Engaged in some small talk where it made me feel like he acknowledged me as a person and not just another transaction. I used to shop here for years. It took me sometime to figure out the layout bc things seem a bit backwards but eventually I got it. They are ridiculous when it comes to the mask recommendations. Instead of asking people if they have a medical condition, they just follow you around, harassing their customers. It is beyond ridiculous. There fresh produce is alright but they dont sell as much fresh produce than food for less. One thing this place lack is low quality customer service. While i was waiting in the counter, theres 3 staff just talking in the counter bickering about their life and wasting customer time. While i look at them they just give me that "whatever" look and when you try to ask them for help instead of going with you to locate something they just tell you which area and look away like youre a nuisiance to them. Inconsistent regarding freshness of produce, poultry and packaged deli foods. I can usually find expired items still for sale, thank goodness I dislike Sushi.. yikes! The store prices are not nearly as reasonable as their neighbor Food 4 Less. Which questions why shop there? It's never crowded, that's why. However this may indicate the appearance of the lack of employees. Most visits take forever in the ONE check-out open. The staff could use some customer service training from the Trader Joe's manual especially on the register. So many of the younger checkers are detached and almost rude. I've seen them treat some older folks with indifference and impatience more than once. And they need to learn how to count back change. At this store, you can save up to 36% more than you would shopping at Vons, Which from personal experience is vastly approaching to being next to ABSOLUTELY nothing. This place is better and the products here tend to go VERY FAST once there's a great deal on them, so you gotta get them while and when you can. I stop at this store occasionally as they have some deals that just can't be beat. Yesterday, I wanted to buy a couple of cucumbers after work. They had none and many of their other vegetables were also out of stock with barren displays where they should have been. I also stop by in the mornings at times to buy their precut fruit bowls and often find the same thing. The area with the fruit bowls barren. The manger of this store needs to more closely manage the produce department. read more

Wanted to buy a rotisserie chicken but they had no sleeves on them, each one was too hot to pick up, when I did pick one up HOT grease came out of the side of the container and burned my fingers and palm. I went to ask for a towel to wipe my hand off and the employee I talked to treated my situation with sarcasm and complete lack of empathy. This has got to be the most annoying grocery store. Half of the time the items that I need are out of stock, and they never have enough checkers, and never have anyone to bag groceries. I wish they would go out of business so we could get a real grocery store. I never had any problems when Albertson's was in this location. read more

I love this store. It's never terribly busy, the shelves are always stocked, and the prices are very reasonable. Everyone who works here is helpful, talkative, and friendly. You've lost my business. To make my point, as an example, Kohls sold us a piece of a luggage set that was taken apart from a bigger set by accident. Saved us over a hundred dollars and they were happy to do it for us. They said they would rather sell us what we needed than send it back to the manufacturer because we are valued customers. In comparison, smart & final made a stink about selling us a single dollar soda out of a case that was already opened by another customer with bottles missing, because they only sell it by case. They said they would rather send it back to the manufacturer. Customer service keeps me as a customer and I guess smart & final lost me over a dollar soda :( read more
