When we enter this place we were asked how many were in our party. We told the lady who was speaking with us we had 7. She then rudely said to me it would be an hour wait! Because of the tone in her voice we left. We went down the street to your competitor. After all it was my Granddaughter's birthday dinner. She chose your establishment for her birthday meal. This was my second time coming here and both times the food has been delicious! The ambiance is cute with eccentric pictures and decor, def a bit more of a hole in the wall kind of place than a fancy sushi place. But the rolls are out of this world good! Both times I've gone I had nice servers, tonight she was especially sweet! My husband and I started with three rolls; the Yoko Ono, Blushing Dragon, and Paso roll. I love rolls with lemon on it, (Paso), so refreshing. The Yoko was the perfect amount of spicy. The rolls were so good that we wanted one more so we got the Templeton roll! Safe to say we are new fans of Ono fish. Best part is I don't feel overtly full, just perfectly content. Def will come back! read more

Food was great and well priced, service was such a big pain point though. We had to flag down waiters to order, and trying to pay for our food involved us waiting at the register for 2 minutes until someone noticed us, then took another 2 minutes to come back after our card was processed. *Take out order on Weds. 2/12/2025 :) Ordered takeout from Toshi 1.0 after hearing some good reviews about it, and was pleasantly surprised with how tasty everything was. It was quite easy to order takeout- they have a website that's easy to navigate through and get your order in. At pick up, the staff was very kind and double checked our order before handing it to us. It's a small restaurant, but it was quite busy that night and it seemed like everyone was having a great time. OKAY THE FOOD: * the hand rolls are SO GOOD. Honestly my favorite and a little bummed that I had only ordered one for myself and one for my partner. * the blushing dragon roll was very tasty and the fish tasted pretty fresh. It was definitely something different from my usual orders, but it became an instant favorite :) * Lion King roll: you can't go wrong with this roll- it was made well and tasted great! We've been to this sushi restaurant before and sat at the sushi' bar. We had the owner serving us and making our sushi. It was an amazing experience and told him that we'd definitely be back next time we're visiting from Redondo Beach. Well we went last night, Thursday and it was a totally different experience. Not even close to the service or quality of the food. I guess this is what happens when the boss is off. The place was not busy at all, maybe 1 other table besides ours. We had an older lady waiting on us. We ordered a hot green tea and a cold one. She brought the hot one but forgot the cold one. We had to ask Lola who was busing dishes from tables that left hours ago. We asked Lola for the cold green tea along with sugar. She came back without the sugar. Had to get her attention again for the sugar. I think if you have tables with guests you should be more attentive than to tables that need cleaning. But that seemed not to be the case. We ordered garlic edamame, crispy rice. Fried avocado and agedashi tofu. Had to remind the older lady we still have garlic edamame coming after everything else arrived. The apps were all tasty. Fried avocado seemed small compared to the last time. Next round was 5 rolls- albacore tataki, cherry blossom. 911, rock n roll, good times. The Cherry Blossom was terrible, fishy and tough like there was a lot of muscle in it and you couldn't bit through it. I couldn't eat it. The albacore tataki was good just looked small and nothing like when the boss served it to us. 911 was ok. Just a lil too much sauce on top. The rock n roll & good times were the best out of the 5. Overall we felt like it was a different restaurant experience and had we had it the first time we may not have been back. It's a shame because you hope that when you're not there (boss) your staff continues to offer the same quality experience that when the boss is there. We may go back when the owner's back. First off food is always good. Service just continues to slide downhill. Apologies if this sounds misogynistic, but the female staff at Toshi 1.0 just get worse and worse each time I go in. They are not attentive to customers, they are always looking the other way; you ask them for service - they go do something else. I asked for plates before food was served - I got chopsticks and soy sauce about 5 minutes after was sat looking at the food on our table. I watched the server do other things other than get us plates and chopsticks. I made reservations for my wife's birthday, which I noted when I made the reservation. However the woman who greeted us at the door ignored what I said about reservations and just told us to sit. Three different people had to take our order - it's like the each time they forgot or didn't write it down. They brought a birthday dessert for the table next to us, they seemed to forget my wife's birthday and just ignore us. While we probably would have ordered more, we just collected our bill and completed the evening at The Alchemist, an establishment that understands service. Whenever the male server/host came by (which was very infrequent) he would address issues, take orders, etc.... and get them right. While the actual waitresses seemed to keep bumbling. While one could argue inexperience - these female staffers have been there for years. It's just sad to see this place continue to decline because of lazy staff. It will take a long time for me to consider going back here - especially when I like their sushi and rolls. read more

I'm giving 2 stars because the food is great. It's our preferred sushi restaurant for the menu and fresh food. However, the service is truly horrible every time we're in there. We sat for 10 minutes as the chefs were behind the sushi bar spinning towels with nothing to do and the busser wiped already clean tables. We had to get up and ask for a menu as the one server took over 10 minutes to fill one water pitcher and one drink for a table of 4. My boyfriend and I have actually been here before and used to really enjoy it, especially during the afternoons when there was one server who seemed to run the whole place smoothly--she was always attentive and on top of everything, and we've even talked about how good she was at her job. That's part of why this experience was so disappointing. We hadn't been in a while but decided to come back because the food had always been solid. Unfortunately, this visit was completely different. The service was extremely disorganized even though the restaurant didn't seem too busy--empty tables inside, no one outside, and multiple staff on the floor. We ordered drinks and food (apps, rolls, and miso soup), but everything came out scattered, and we were left waiting on multiple items with little to no communication. I asked for sriracha early on and never got it, even after my boyfriend asked another server (we asked a total of 3 times), so we ended up eating without it. Our drinks sat empty for a long time, and no one checked in. Eventually, a server asked if we received everything, and we had to point out that we were still missing items. One finally came out, and we were told the last item was "coming soon." The whole environment felt uncoordinated--at one point there was even confusion between staff about whether customers could use the bathroom, which kind of reflected the lack of communication overall. Both my boyfriend and I have experience working in restaurants, so we try to be understanding, but this just felt poorly managed. To be fair, we did receive all of our food and ate everything, and it's possible they adjusted the bill (we didn't ask for a receipt), but at the end of the day, people go out to eat for the experience, not just the food. Even if the food tastes good, the service really shapes how the night feels. To make things worse, we both ended up getting food poisoning afterward. I hadn't eaten anything earlier that day, which is why we ordered a lot, and my boyfriend felt sick as well, so we're confident it came from here. It's honestly really upsetting because we used to be loyal customers and always tipped well (this time only leaving $5). The food itself tasted good, which makes it even more frustrating that the overall experience turned out like this. read more

I'm traveling on business and I couldn't decide between getting a steak or having sushi. After speaking to multiple people, they suggested I go to Toshi and I was not disappointed. I was greeted by the Sushi chef Nate. Just wanna give him a shout out thanks for being so awesome and amazing!!!! he was friendly and helpful and made some delicious sushi. I had the firecracker roll , albacore tataki roll and some yellowtail sushi. All of it 10/10 !! Fresh and delicious. The yellowtail melted in my mouth and both rolls were so flavorful and amazing! It had been several years since last time we were here and decided to attempt it with our 2.5 year old. Well, they have a kids menu that is perfect! California rolls, tempura, and Mochi for $8!? Our daughter was quite happy, she loves sushi and ice cream. For the adults the deals were also quite good. I was originally going to just order one roll and my wife a seaweed salad. The waiter was kind enough to point out their lunch special which was 2 rolls, seaweed salad and miso for about a dollar difference. I was able to basically get the same roll I wanted and another that I was considering as well as the salad and soup. Great deal, I didn't expect them to still be a full size 8 piece roll each. Food was great, service was great, and the pricing is great. We all felt very welcome and they had high chairs for the little one. read more

I've given this place several chances, but today was the final straw. I called to order takeout and was met with rudeness right off the bat. When I asked about sashimi and mentioned that on a previous order the pieces were tiny, the man on the phone got defensive and actually said, "Well, why are you ordering from here then?" Not exactly how you treat paying customers. He claimed he was the owner (which I highly doubt, considering he didn't even know his own menu prices) and even tried to overcharge me. On top of that, every single time I've ordered here, the rolls I received didn't match the ingredients listed on the menu. When I pulled up the menu linked to their own website, he dismissed it and acted like I was wasting his time because I didn't have the "right" menu in front of me. And here's the kicker: three out of the four times we've tried to order from them, they've told us they're closing an hour early because they "ran out of rice." What kind of sushi restaurant can't manage to keep rice on hand? Between the bad service, wrong orders, questionable pricing, attitude, and now the rice fiascos, this place has gone downhill fast. Save yourself the headache and go to Yanagi in Paso instead -- fresh food, friendly service, and worth your time. read more

I was flying solo for VDay this year so wanted to treat myself to some take away sushi. Toshi gets mostly favorable reviews so I ordered through their app. Since it was Valentines I wasn't too surprised that they were pretty swamped when I got there 45 minutes to pick up and my order wasn't ready. No worries, the staff were friendly and I was on my way about 10 minutes later. Unfortunately I'm unable to recommend this establishment as the fish and preparation were absolutely awful. Poor quality fish in that it smelled fishy and had a lot of "chewy" parts. Sadly, I ended up throwing away more than half because I just couldn't stomach it. Maybe this was just an off delivery for them but due to the nature/safety of raw fish, I won't be able to try them again. read more

Another great experience at Toshi! Kids all home for holidays and we love our sushi fix! Ordered some of our favs including Blushing Dragon, Good Times and Toshi roll. Tried the caterpillar as well and it was delicious too. We asked about a custom hamachi roll the owner mentioned to me before, and the chef made us a wonderful combo that included hamachi, spicy tuna and sesame seeds with a spicy-savory sauce and it was amazing. It was a full house for the most part, but we got seated pretty quick and our server is so attentive and funny! We really enjoyed our meal and trying new rolls. Not my first trip to Toshi, but my first review. Needed a break from Christmas shopping and Toshi hit the mark. I had the lunch special, Tempura shrimp with Golden California roll. Comes with miso soup and a side salad. It's the perfect size for lunch. Not too big or heavy and the food was fantastic. The restaurant has a very friendly vibe and the server was on point. We ordered for pickup the other night and the girl taking the ordered mistook my toshi roll order for the trust me roll. I am 6 months pregnant and was so sad when I received a roll that was all raw fish. Although the roll looked absolutely amazing, I was unable to eat it. I called them back and they were SO KIND about refunding me or crediting me for the correct roll. I went back the next day to retrieve my correct roll and I was greeted by the most friendly staff! I am most definitely planning to go back once this baby arrives so I can try the fresh fish rolls they offer. But we did enjoy the rolls we got this time! read more

On a recent visit we had a strange experience to which the lovely owner Rassa immediately remedied. It doesn't often happen that owners not only take accountability, but also swift action to fix an issue. Tonight's takeout order was simply delicious and very much in line with that I've come to expect from their flavor, quality, and presentation. The salmon was buttery, the avocado at peak ripeness, and the the overall rolls super satisfying.
