We've been tryin got come here for some time. With limited tables, it's best to get there when they first open, either lunch or dinner. It's worth the wait. Everything was delicious, fresh, and melts in your mouth. I was too excited and ordered way too much and ended up taking some home. Sashimi will always be my favorite way to eat sushi but the special rolls were generously topped with more sashimi. The space was clean and full of Japanese decor. The sweet couple is from Osaka and shared with us stories from when they lived In Japan. I'm so glad we came. The food is pricey but I am willing to pay for quality. If you're looking for legitimate sushi in Paso Robles you should consider traveling ten minutes South to Nogi in Atascadero. Reservations should be considered since there only three tables and no sushi bar. If they're full you can always get take out. This is a husband and wife team (my assumption) with no other employees. Decor is simple and clean. They close down at 1pm and reopen at 4pm for dinner. I ordered the green tea and started ordering through the menu. Stopped here after trying to hit up our favorite joint but the chef was running an hour late so we decided on Nogi since it was the only one open besides 1 other spot. This one had the better reviews so we came here. Food was good and tasted really fresh, no complaints there. Service was also great. we came right at opening and everything came out fast. My main issue is the limited selection and lack of creativity. If you're used to more Americanized style sushi with sauces and bold flavors (cilantro, lemon, mango), this might feel a bit basic. Most rolls are pretty straightforward with spicy mayo nothing that really stands out. There is also no meat selections like the ribs or teriyaki chicken. It's also a very small spot, so keep that in mind. On the plus side, the miso soup was surprisingly really good, they definitely got that right. read more

After several attempts to eat here, we finally made it! The owners are very friendly and polite, providing both service and food in a very quaint atmosphere. The sushi options and their accompaniments are good with many specials being offered. One thing I really liked, beyond the freshness, is the more traditional style of preparation. Not to knock others, but I really enjoyed the lack of cream cheese in their sushi rolls. The seafood is fresh, the sauces are traditional and enhance the flavors of the fish instead of hiding it. And, my spicy scallop roll was one of the best I've ever had. Just the thought of it makes my mouth water. The prices are fair and very reasonable for the quality of sushi. Nogi Sushi is such a hidden gem! Sushi options in this county are limited, so we were very excited to have found Nogi. The other surrounding sushi spots in the area cannot compare. Nogi is a small, almost unassuming hole-in-the-wall, "if you know, you know" kind of place. It actually reminds us of Sushi Cocoro (& Udon) on the Big Island- simple, cozy, and focused on quality. I made the pilgrimage to Nogi today. Wow. My brother and I each drove from different locations. So Cal area and Monterey. Met in the middle. Atascadero is one of those small towns you drive by and never stop. From the highway you're thinking, "usual freeway town, nothing really there. Is it safe?" Or something like that. Nothing could be further from the truth. Yes, a little town-- sparking clean, everything, sidewalks, streets ( except for one small road project) storefronts...like amazing. Spend a few minutes walking around. Nogi--first, only open until 1pm for lunch. The reason when asked, "there is no business after 1:00" I did mention this town was different. Dinner ends at 7pm. They do a lot of take out. As mentioned by everyone they only have 3 tables. Note: they could easily put a few more but this isn't their MO. They don't care. They do it their way. Husband and wife. No employees. The menu is loaded with options and you can find lots to choose from. I looked over previous reviews and they menus are accurate. My Bro and I were up against the 1:00 closing we didn't know about. The wife informed us and I said, "no problem-- we're going to order a lot of food ($$)-- haha. And we did. Some of the finest sushi I've ever had. Fish was freshest, tasty, and presented very nice. The breading on the spring rolls were so light it was heavenly. I ordered to the special blue fish Negri. Yes, $12 for one piece. A bargain. Generous portion and was so good-- melted in my mouth like butter. Super quality. FYI- at 1:00 we weeds still getting stuff we'd ordered. The sign on the door said, Closed....when we finished we thanked chef and his wife profusely and told them both how much we enjoyed the offerings. I remarked about many of the dishes and again thanked him and explained we made a long special trip to taste his skillful offerings. He was very pleased to have made us happy. I took a picture and said casually, "for Yelp." I could see he was upset. He said, "it's BS. I don't care" I said. " all the reviews are 5's-- why aren't you happy?" He just said, " I care about your experience eating here, not ratings. "You' got to admire a guy that's so into his life's mission to satisfy his customers-- vs chasing numbers. I lived in Osaka and Nagano Japan for 2.5 years so I'm really spoiled on sushi quality. This is the only place in Central Coast I've found that exceeds my fish quality standards. The selection is limited, the ambience is fishing equipment on the walls and a display of Japanese Kitch (Pachinko machines, dolls, and other random things that brought back lots of memories). I had a major craving for sushi after being out of town for a while and so decided to give Nogi a try. The woman serving us was so so kind and had a constant smile on her face. The vintage fishing decor was also super cute. Now for the sushi! I am a sushi addict and grew up around seafood; while I'm fine with cheaper sauces covered sushi, I really love a place where the fish shines, and here it did. It was expensive, much more so than I'm used to in this area, but I think it was worth it. The fish was super fresh and flavorful, and the cuts on each nigiri were incredibly generous, the way high quality nigiri should be; no rice balls with a pinch of fish here. I was worried it wouldn't be a lot of food for the price, but 7 pieces of nigiri and a futomaki roll was almost too much! The highlights for me were the scallop and the salmon toro (a special). I always say, the tinier the restaurant, the better the food and Nogi is no exception. This is a true Japanese sushi house that comes with the extra polite owners who obviously take great pride in the craft. I hate to post these pictures because it's a to-go order which isn't nearly as pretty as a table presentation. But at least it shows the size and quality. I ordered the Nama Chirashi, a spicy scallop roll and the deep fried yellowtail collar. First, the Chirashi fish. Man oh man - this is the real deal. Perfect cuts of premium fish served at the right temperature. The cuts are thick and succulent. Sooo good. And yes, that is real homemade Tomago (I ate one piece). Can we talk about the rice? Most people don't understand the importance of the rice. It has to be just the right amount of chew and stickiness to be easily picked up with chopsticks without being mushy. It takes years of practice to get right and this was perfect. Even the seaweed around the scallop roll was perfectly moist and chewy. My husband was just as happy with the special, fried yellowtail collar and veggie tempura. Nicely crispy with moist perfection inside. Not greasy at all. Just excellent. There are only three small tables if you want to eat in. Call at lunchtime to order dinner and they'll be sure to save the ingredients - they said they often run out. We are always greeted with a smile and thanked for coming back all the way from Fresno. They are always curious to know how our life back home is going and we are happy to do the same. They truly care about the customers and the community they have built with them. In our most recent visit they had mentioned to visit a local strawberry stand named Okui to take back home with us. I so happy to have this place in Atascadero amongst the sea of mediocre restaurants we have here (though our restaurant choices are improving). I've been here several times. I started out getting takeout here but now eat inside the restaurant if I can get a table. There's only three tables inside so phone ahead to get a reservation. If you can't get a reservation then don't let that discourage you and get takeout to eat at your house or hotel room. The place is super cute inside, like an Izakaya from Japan. A lot of the fish here is fresh from the Morro Bay harbor and they have rotating specials and often list where their different seafood items are sourced from. read more

This review is for the customer service, the lack of it, actually. I had called and a lady with an accent told me that they were backed up and they couldn't take orders until around 7 pm. That's very rude, but it's okay because they've lost a good customer and they've saved me money. I was also thinking, isn't that when you close? But didn't say anything negative at the time. I understood. It's only after I read the yelp reviews and found out they only had 3 tables that I decided to write this review. Are you kidding? Why won't they add more tables? Or have outdoor seating? Is it because they're arrogant and would only serve some customers and discriminate against others? I don't know what the reason is, but she sure sounded very snooty as if her sushi restaurant is the only one in town. Please, lady, get over yourself. It's us who are helping you, not the other way around. Since she wouldn't let me order over the phone, and I wouldn't want to give snobby places business anyway, I ended up going to a different sushi restaurant. I'm so glad I did because it was delicious and way cheaper with huge portions. I have to thank Nogi for their rudeness, actually, but that doesn't change my opinion of giving them one star. Nogi is amazing-- hands down, they're consistently the best sushi I've had. I've regularly frequented (and adored-- no doubt will continue to) some very bougie, upscale spots where a lot of complicated and legitimately delicious complicated sushi options were available, having lived in downtown Honolulu for 10 years before moving here. Hell, we like that trendy sushi spot in Paso, which more or less fits the "delicious but not in any way authentic" description. That said, for simpler (i.e., your roll will have 2-6 ingredients rather than the 27,000 involved in many places' sushi rolls), scaled back to incredibly high quality that shines through in every bite, Nogi has continued to be a spot that either my husband, or I, or both of us, ends up at at least once a week. Newest favorites? The salmon tataki blew our minds. I've never seen my "meat and potatoes-raised, vegetable-friendly convert" spouse hunt down every last little bit of sprout on a mission the way he did savoring that appetizer. Seriously incredible, and their take-out plating is perfectly set up to avoid your food being soggy or "cooked" in the acid in a sauce. The poke bowl is also killer-- easily, beyond any shadow of a doubt, the best poke bowl that we have had outside of Hawaii. In fact, arguably better than many that we had when living IN Hawaii. The tuna is immaculately cut and of excellent quality (of course-- Chef Nogi has never served us a meal with any gristle or tendon), marinated in a perfectly simple and flavorful sauce, and the combo of red onion/sprouts/seaweed salad over sushi rice is just comforting, make-you-homesick heaven. These other poke places are getting it all wrong, and Chef Nogi has pulled a home run here-- simplicity is 100% the key in a great poke bowl. Get out of here with your corn, jalapeno, and romaine, other places! I'm not even sorry. Feels weird to write a third review for the same business, but truly, these folks are killing it every single time in terms of the food and service, and are just the nicest family beyond that.
