Located one the first floor of the Robson public market, I was excited to try it after reading some reviews. The menu has lots of options so we ordered a few different kinds of dumplings to share. We were left disappointed. Blend with barely any flavour. Even with the soy sauce it didn't feel like a good meal. I found this place on Google and came to a 40 year old looking small shopping center to a second floor Asian food court with old people and delinquent school skipping looking people at the seating tables (it's Friday, but maybe they had the day off cause Family Day weekend). The first floor had stores in the walkway and they were equipped with make shift roofs because the actual roof of the shopping center leaks. The chef at this dumpling shop was a a friendly bald uncle with a shokz headphone. There were some elementary school age kids chilling and watching an iPad in front of the food shops. The bathroom nearby had misspelled instructions on each of the stalls. There is a small trading card game shop on the first floor managed by a former delinquent who encourages the kids not to skip school like he did. That is to say, this place is EXCELLENT Chinese food vibes. I had the pork and cabbage Xiao long bao and also the pork and chives boiled dumplings. They were both remarkably similar to each other, and that's a good thing for me, because they were both very good. The dumplings in general were juicy and retained their liquids well, and the flavor was wholesome and not too salty. I wasn't expecting a lot when I arrived at the semi-empty Robson Public Market on a rainy afternoon. The building is only half-filled with a bunch of random business, but upstairs in their food court are 3 diehard business that aren't giving up on the market. I headed to Nine Dumpling where a friendly woman was just opening up at noon. I ordered the sour Mala beef noodle soup and sampler dumpling plate (steamed). In about 15 minutes, I was enjoying the piping hot soup, spicy with a sheen of hot oil and chili. A generous helping of tender beef, noodles and a few pieces of green veggies. The dumpling were great with thin homemade skin and lots of filling. My favorites were lamb with zucchini and pork with green pepper. Do not be deterred by the setting! You go into an old worn down public market and Nine Dumplings is on the second floor. Hot tea is free with your order. You choose type of dumpling you want out of 4 then you choose the filling for your dumpling. The woman behind the counter helped us choose our combos for dumplings and fillings, and there was no miss. The real highlight was the spicy schezewan dumpling, which we got with vegan filling. There was 2 of us and we got 3 orders of 6 dumplings and it was the right amount of food. The dumpling soup was also divine, which we got with cilantro pork. The hubby and I dropped by for a weekend lunch. While the market building seems to be on its last legs, the food at Nine Dumplings was still very good. The hubby had the pork and cabbage dumplings and the lamb and zucchini dumplings. Both were delicious and very juicy. Again, a note to newbies: please gently take a small, tiny bite into the dumpling to make a hole, suck some of the juice out, then continue eating. If you just chomp into it, you will be spraying yourself and whoever is sitting around you with hot dumpling juice! As for me, I had their sour & spicy mala beef noodle soup (again). It was still very delicious, although maybe not quite as magical as it has been in the past, but still, very tasty and satisfying. I suspect the cook reduced the heat level down as I wasn't Chinese, which was fine for me. At first I thought they had reduced the amount of beef, but no, most of it was just hidden under the noodles - there was plenty of beef, albeit not quite as succulent as in the past. This place was on my list from my last visit when we were doing a dumpling food tour . Unfortunately, it was closed the day we came due to family matters. So, this time, made sure to call and check to see if they were open and they were! We came for dinner and it was a very quiet place. It seemed like it was made for non-Chinese in mind, so when I ordered my dumplings with chilli oil, I could barely taste the mala or any spicy at all. $10 for 6 small dumplings was also incredibly disappointing. We ordered the chive dumpling with chilli oil. They told us it would be a 15 minute wait. The chilli oil isn't really spicy so I definitely would recommend getting it with it. The skin is the perfect thickness (not too thick) and nice and chewy. The filling is juicy and had SO MUCH CHIVES. If you like chives, you should try this. Great hidden gem dumpling place! Located in a sketchy, quasi defunct looking food court on the 2nd floor of the Robson Public Market which has probably seen better days. In the quiet Robson Public Market, you'll find Nine Dumplings, which lives up to its name: the vendor offers nine types of dumpling (and several other dishes we didn't get to try, as well). Five of the options are pork based, one is seafood based, one is vegan, one is a combination of proteins, and one is lamb. If you can't decide which you want--we couldn't--get the sampler, one of each dumpling, and choose how you'd like them: spicy, plain steamed, brothy. The spicy preparation is served over a hot oil with crushed szechuan peppercorns and cilantro, which I spooned onto each bite. The dumplings were so juicy that I eventually stopped biting to see what the filling was and just put the whole thing in my mouth and savored every flavor, reluctant to lose any of the juices! They have a large vegan section of the menu, which drew me in. They're located in the corner of the 2nd floor of Robson Market. Don't try ordering online through UberEats, as the prices are about 30% more expensive. If you order takeout, either order in person and wait, or find a photo of their menu online and phone it in. I did the former, ordered three items, and was told it would take 15 minutes. I came back 20 minutes later and they were just packing everything up. I ordered the F4: Vegan Deep Fry Steamed Bun ($1.99); E7: Vegan Cabbage w/Spicy Peanut Butter Sauce ($5.99); and G9: Szechwan Dan Dan Noodle with Vege and Spicy Peanut Butter Sauce ($11.99) -- all prices quoted exclude tax. The "bun" was actually four mini deep fried buns. They were very salty and basically just deep fried bread, no filling. Salty, fried, doughnuty -- fairly tasty, but this wasn't what I expected and I wasn't a big fan of them. OK. 3/5 The cabbage dish was cold and very tasty, though extremely salty as you eat more of it. Nicely cooked cabbage, with szechuan peppercorns and chili peppers, and coated with a really nice peanut butter sauce. It was ultimately too salty -- near-prohibitively so if you're going to eat this yourself as I did -- but really nice flavours. Good if shared with at least one other person. 3.5/5 The dan dan noodles were pretty kickass. They were cooked with plenty of szechuan peppercorns, a spicy peanut sauce, a few pieces of mini bok choy, and sprinkled with peanuts, green onions. I wished there were more veggies here, but the flavours were brilliant. This was excellent. For vegan dan dan noodles in town, these are up there with Peaceful's. 4.5/5 I would definitely come back, though many of their items look insanely expensive ($20) for some main dishes -- that's pretty unusual to see for food court food. Overall, this is a pretty special place, especially if you're looking for vegan-friendly Chinese food that is designed to be vegan (and not just incidentally or modified to be vegan). A hidden little place in Robson Public Market! I came here based on pictures I saw on my Yelp newsfeed. They have a pretty expansive menu, I'm sure they have something for everyone. I came here specifically because they have vegetarian dan dan noodles. Very few places make this dish without ground pork, so I had to try it. I got 2 orders to go (COVID). I called ahead so the owner made them fresh right before my arrival. The noodles were saucy, had peanuts, chili flakes, and bok choy. Lots of chili oil as expected. The peanut sauce was maybe a little bit thicker than I would've expected/liked. Overall, they weren't too spicy, were pretty saucy, and a decent portion size for $12. I think I would've liked them a little more if they were spicier and less saucy, but this may be a personal preference. I'd say check it out if you're in the area! Tons of great Asian food on this part of Robson + boba (Jenjudan) and Japanese cheesecake (Tetsu's) right down the street for dessert. read more

Nine Dumplings served some of the best and most creative dumplings I have ever had. Pork and Cilantro Dumplings with Butterfly Pea (猪肉香菜饺子)? Check. Scallop and Fish Dumplings with Squid Ink (鱼肉带子饺子)? Check. Contrary to its name, though, you should surely order more than nine dumplings. Add in a Vegan Szechwan Dan Dan Noodles with Veggies (担担面(素)) while you're at it too. The dumplings are generously packed with fresh ingredients to offer quite the bite (or two). I loved how juicy each dumpling was and how each ingredient served a purpose in the small real estate that is a dumpling. The cilantro was bright in flavour and the pork was ever so succulent. The fish was delicate and tender, and the scallops were plump and present in each dumpling. If you order more than one dumpling, I would recommend trying different cooking methods for a more fulsome experience. I ordered mine boiled and Shanghai soup style, though I dipped both in the black vinegar sauce for even more flavour. The dan dan noodles were also delightful. Being a dish typically made with minced pork, I was surprised by how bold in flavour the vegan version was - so much so that I did not miss the pork at all (granted, I was eating the noodles in between bites of dumplings). The noodles were supple and coated in a spicy peanut butter sauce. I've found that dan dan noodles can sometimes be overwhelmingly peanuty, spicy, or overcooked, but this dish was well balanced and executed. For my next order, I'd like to visit the stall itself rather than order off UberEats. As another reviewer commented, there is a premium (~30%) to ordering off the app, with the above dishes being $9.99, $10.99, and $15.99, but at the stall, they are $5.99, $6.99, and $11.99 (though the dumplings do not come with pop), respectively. It would be wonderful to meet the owners/chefs behind Nine Dumplings. This mom 'n' pop shop is tucked away inside the food court of the Robson Public Market, but it truly deserves front and centre attention for the sheer quality of its food. read more

Located on 2nd floor at robson market!! Skip to the end of this review for a must try combo :) We got the 9 dumpling sampler, Szchewan spicy drooling chicken (cold dish), and the Dan Dan noodles. The Szchewan chicken dish was boommbbb. It's served cold and sits ontop of this chili oil sauce. Although it's served cold, the initial cooking phase was done really well as the chicken is nice, tender, moist and cooked perfectly as you can tell the center is still just a little pink (not raw). The spice wasn't overpowering either and it was well garnished and fragrant. The Dan Dan noodles are served over what is more like a sauce as its a little thicker, but it's amazing. Also well cooked, served with a few leaves of bok choy and the noodles aren't overdone. Also nicely garnished with the green onion bits, cilantro and red peanuts. The only thing I will say about the 9 dumpling sampler is that it's more gimmicky than anything else. Nothing to rant or rave about, it's not bad, but not amazing. Now, the best part I saved for last. So, if you order the Dan Dan noodles and the szchewan drooling chicken dish, take the dan dan noodles and DIP THEM in the Szchewan spicy drooling chicken chili sauce. It's SOOOOO AMAZING. My friends and I bicycle 275km every year almost exclusively to come and eat Nine Dumplings' colorful Sampler bowl, drizzled in cilantro and chili oil. (This year, we ate our food too quickly to remember to take pictures, so our photos are from last year.) Nine Dumplings perfects humble home cooking classics, and as first generation Chinese-Americans, we find the food here deeply nostalgic, and comforting. The food court where you'll find Nine Dumplings is typically vacant. That said, our favorite place to sit is in the sun, at the table adjacent the stained glass window. It's the right kind of vibe for a group of good friends, a person on their lonesome, or a couple out for an afternoon. Nine Dumplings, in all our visits, has been a one-man operation. I wish I had his name, as he is a very kind and thoughtful individual. For the quality of the noodles and dumplings here, the food service is surprisingly swift. Ordering Tips: - SAMPLER: If you are not a fan of Chinese tahini, ask for a replacement in the Sampler. Chinese tahini is made from ground roasted sesame seeds as opposed to raw and can make the taste overly bitter to those who are unfamiliar to it. Can't really recall the last time I've had a dumpling that didn't taste okay/good but the dumplings I had here were exceptional. The chili sauce was perfectly balanced in spice and flavor. This can be an amazing spot if you know what to order. Huge vegan menu too which is always fantastic. It's on the second floor of Robson Public Market. Not a lot of seats unfortunately and when I went yesterday afternoon at around 1pm the tables were all full. Food is cooked on the spot but be prepared to wait a little bit since there's only two people doing everything. They bring the dishes to your table one by one as they finish cooking, so the food is always piping hot. I ordered the spicy peanut butter cabbage salad (vegan) which was pretty good but it is quite spicy. The peanut butter flavour is prominent as they don't skimp on the peanut butter. They give you a side of vinegar should you wish to add some (I didn't). The fried vegetable balls (vegan) was one of my favourite dishes. They are deep fried to perfection and the batter is light and crisp without being overly oily. They are super flavourful and you can really taste the mild sweetness of the vegetables which is perfect. The eggplant dish (vegan) was also really delicious. The eggplant was tender and the garlic and soy sauce complements it perfectly. My parents loved this dish and said it was one of the best eggplant dishes they've ever had. Note that it doesn't come with any rice though. The sesame paste pancakes (vegan) were pretty good too. Although a little more dense than flaky, there is a generous amount of sesame paste filling. The sesame paste was aromatic and not overly sweet, which I really liked. My parents loved the dumpling sampler. According to them, the dumplings were super juicy and flavourful. I thought the vegan dumplings were just okay. The dumpling wrapper was a bit too thick and the flavour of the filling wasn't my favourite. Unlike the meat dumplings, there isn't really any soup component to make it juicy, so they were a tad bland. The bbq corn (vegan) was pretty much the only fail of the day. The texture was super weird and hard to chew, though the flavour was alright. It was the only dish where we took one bite and immediately gave up on eating it. The deep fried mantou (vegan) was another of my favourite dishes. There is the option of sweet or savoury, and I chose the sweet. They are the perfect dessert to end off the meal. They are little bites of pillowy, sugary goodness. Not too sweet, since the mantou itself isn't and the sweetness comes from the sprinkled sugar on top. Overall, it was a fantastic meal. Definitely on the pricier side, but the portions are pretty decent. I'd recommend the deep fried veggie balls as an appetiser, the eggplant as a main (add rice if needed) and the sweet mantou as dessert. read more

BEST dumplings I've ever ever had, especially the pork and cabbage one with the spicy mala sauce is delicious. I come here twice a week and never have been disappointed, except on thursays when they are closed. I bring a different friend with me each time and all of them have loved it too so far.. Haven't been in this building for the long time. It was pretty cool when it was new, in the 90's, but looks like it didn't succeed. Still has a butcher and a wine-shop, but the rest just looks like luggage storage... kinda sad. Fortunately we were just out wandering around, and took a look upstairs only to find this unbelievable dumpling shop. It in not much bigger that a food truck, one woman working in it, surrounded by food awards. Best Chinese, Best Dumplings, etc, etc. And food delivery guys coming every 2 minutes. We were only an hour away from our lunch reso, so we just wanted a small bite... We had the scallop/fish in squid ink wrapper. One of the best dumplings I have ever had! Perfectly thin wrapper, delicious vinegar based sauce, super savory filling. A Masterpiece! Being a dumpling guy, I seek them out wherever I go, so was shocked that I had never heard of this place. If you are reading this, you should go. It is fantastic. Next trip to Vancouver, it is the first place I will go. Maybe the second place too. read more

I heard about this place but never get a chance to try it until a few days ago. The nine dumplings were very colourful and good portion. We ordered it as side order, so we were actually very full. Since it's a dumping of each flavour, it was full of flavours, but to be honest, we weren't so sure which one is which. I think next time, I will pick one to two flavours and order. :) it was very delicious though. read more

I love that this place is tucked away in a little mall with a tiny food court on Robson where there are tons of small gems throughout the street. It is on the 2nd level where the light hits the food court tables in all the right places for a bright indoor to outdoor experience. The service is just 1 guy that brings you the dumplings in a bowl in either spicy or not spicy sauce (of course I chose spicy). I personally tried the vegan and fish scallop dumplings but my boyfriend got the 9 dumpling sampler and it was something he said he'd definitely have again. Our rankings are our opinion and we happen to love cilantro so 1. Pork cilantro 2. Fish scallop and pork squid and chives, 3. Lamb and zucchini 4. Pork green pepper, 5. Pork chives and pork and kimchi 6. Pork cabbage 7. Vegan. The vegan is good but it leaves a little to be desired in terms of texture and flavor. The tofu is a bit too soft without bite and there is a slightly bitter aftertaste, in the future I'd think more/chunkier shiitake mushrooms might improve the texture. The fish & scallop had the most beautiful flavors that married well with the chili oil and cilantro. I would definitely recommend coming by for a sampler. read more

I got steamed shrimp dumplings, vegan balls (fritters) and a red bean pancake to go. The vegan balls were 5/5, really fresh, light and packed with flavour. The dumplings were 4/5 -- really tender and flavourful although one of the dumplings had a bit of a weird taste. Next time I'm in the area I'm planning to try their lamb ones based on the reviews (they were sold out unfortunately). The pancake was a disaster -- greasy and bitter from sesame oil that tasted old. Neither my kid nor myself could eat it, which was disappointing given its price ($20). I would like to give the dumplings another try as the owner looked like someone who is really committed to his business so my pancake might be a one-off but I would not take risks with their breads/pastries again. read more
