Overpriced. Pretentious. Mediocre food. The hostess who must have been in high school but looked liked she came straight out of the nearby middle school begrudgingly sat us at the outdoor empty bar. She sat us right next to the only 2 other customers at the 12 seater bar. It was happy hour on a rainy Wednesday and we had no reservations at 5:30 pm so we took what she allocated to us. Where we had wanted to eat was nearby but too busy and we had not want to wait - but I wont make that mistake again. Firstly we ordered one dozen house oysters. 1/2 price till 6 pm. Excellent taste and presentation. Next 2 cheeseburgers with fries - BurgerKing in comparison would be considered a gourmet burger and not cost $16.00/order. 2 mixed drinks x 2 ($60.00/total). Total tab was 135.00+tip. Free parking. No credit card fee. Bartender/server was excellent + bonus points for being a real adult who knew basic conversation skills and attempts to please her customers. I don't get this trend of hiring children/teenagers to be the face and first representation of a restaurant establishment with whom a customer has first contact with its staff. Its actually a really important position in the restaurant if it is to be staffed correctly. NICO is great. My family came in and dined on the patio in October of 2020. They seemed to be doing everything right sanitization wise for COVID. So that was a plus too. Started with oysters (how could you not?). They were amazing. My wife and I split several things. The Clams were to die for. The broth was SOOOOOOOO good. The salad was yummy too. Nico has been one of my absolute favorites for years, everything is amazing from great wine, friendly staff and amazing food. My go to is tuna tartar it was cubed maguro so fresh with diced cucumber, my favorite in Charleston. Then I'd get the mussels in a white garlic sauce, finished with their crème brûlée that is cooked at the table. We went last night and it seemed like an off night, maybe it was a new chef, but the tuna tartar is now tuna carpaccio, it was white tuna, not fresh cut and terrible presentation. It was disappointing to say the least when after years of finding my favorite dish, it was something so underwhelming. Why change a good thing?! I actually sent it back which I never do, just didn't feel fresh, however the rest of the meal was incredible. Best raw bar in town. They have specials on Mondays (half priced oysters all night, happy hour til 7p) and Tuesdays (cheap shuckers platter) that are amazing. I've never been a huge fan of their dinner menu, but all the seafood is incredible. Amazing oyster selection, great shrimp, good ceviche. I arrived during happy hour, so I opted for a spot at their lovely outside bar. Soon as I sat down, the bartender (Patrick) arrived with an iced water in hand. I then proceeded to order waaay too much! I started with the happy hour oysters (1.5 each or 18/doz) and a Bloody Mary. Their bloody mix tasted like horseradish and nothing else, so that was a little disappointing. However the oysters were plump and fresh, so a definite plus. Nicos is different in that they serve their oysters still attached to the shell, so you take the little fork to pop it off. They do this because they want to serve you the oyster as fresh and alive as possible! I then tried the octopus and scallop escabeche. Think pickled seafood dish. Total waste of money and I was so excited to try it, thinking it would be better!! I had two slices of scallop and one chunk of octopus. The rest of the small cup contained fennel (tons and tons of fennel, so stay away if you can't stand the taste of licorice) though the liquid had a wonderful sourness to it. Then I ordered the crab+caviar verrines and the pommes frites. The pommes frites are your usual fries, thought the Camembert sauce was scrumptious. The verrines were little cups of salty seafood heaven. I love the crunch from the diced peppers and the salty brine of the caviar really enhances the sweetness of the crab. The tomato and cucumber salad was fresh, and came with feta crumbles and what tasted like a feta purée underneath. It was light and refreshing, but a little strong on the feta. The hot octopus dish was served in a small cast iron dish with a layer of ratatouille (eggplant, yellow squash, and zucchini) and harissa. I opted to forgo the goat cheese since I'm not a fan. The octopus itself was one large tentacle cooked sous vide style. It was quite tender, though extremely salty. The harissa added a nice smoky flavor and the ratatouille was a nice complement. Finally, I ordered the beef "tartare". It was roughly chopped raw beef mixed with what tasted to be a mustardy based sauce served on a thick toast slice. There were pickled onions, toasted capers, caviar, and a bit of fennel for accompaniment. It was really well presented and had a wonderful flavor. Overall, the menu at Nico has something for everyone, especially if you like seafood and sour profiles. I'll definitely be back, and the next time I'll know what to avoid! I'll update my review if anything new is on the menu next time. read more

Went on Monday and it was the best meal I have had since moving to charleston! They had masks, social distances, washed hands, and made us feel beyond comfortable! Very disappointing dinner at Nico last night. While the restaurant was crowded that did not excuse the horrendous service. Our waitress was non-existent and while there were many staff walking around us, no one recognized that we needed service. When we flagged our waitress down she said she'd have to come back, apparently we were not worthy of her time to stop for one second to see to our needs. The chicken was not at all as described by the waitress. It had a sort of breading that was over seasoned with a lot of tarragon. The breast was moist, but unfortunately the size was more like a Cornish hen than a chicken. The leg and thigh were slimy and a bit under cooked-Yikes! My 2 friends each got a dozen oysters which they liked. The plates are enormous and take up all of the table, so it would have been nice to Have them cleared and I would have loved a refill of my cocktail!! We had to ask to have the plates cleared. The waitress finally returned and grabbed the plate of oysters and spilled oyster liquid all over my friends. She disappeared and never returned to wipe up her mess or ask if my friends were okay! Then a second waiter came and asked if something was wrong with my meal, which I told him. He was very apologetic and told our waitress to redo the bill taking my chicken off. But then he grabbed the second plate of oysters and also spilled liquid all down my friends front of her clothes. She was furious and rightfully so, but again no one was concerned about cleaning or wiping up the mess. What's not to love about right-at-the-entrance valet parking, especially on a rainy evening? We considered dining on the wrap around covered patio, or even at the well appointed outside bar, but the weather suggested that we dine indoors. We arrived at 5:15 pm. Both the patio and dining room were already crowded and very energetic. The newly renovated structure is stylish with high, exposed beams, lots of wood and large picture windows so Indoor seating was comfortable and a good choice. The hostess greeted us warmly. We were given a choice of tables, settled in and was immediately approached by Bo, our server, who explained the menu and the day's Specials. We proceeded to order drinks ... for me, my current fave, a Bloody Mary and a Sauvignon Blanc for Joe. Both arrived quickly and were quite satisfying. The cocktail, juicy, tall and icy was well blended; the wine, a decent pour. So far, we were on a roll ... headed to a five star review ... but that integral component, the food, would miss the mark. Joe's ample portion of calamari,($12.00) was served in a (cereal) bowl with a tiny portion of harissa honey Aioli. Bo quickly came to the rescue with two more servings. If you like your squid cut small, fried and crunchy, that's your choice. But to me, the tidbits were overly so and nothing out of the ordinary as fried calamari is readily available all over the Lowcountry. My salad ($12.00) was also served in a (cereal) bowl. The ample portion easily could have been shared by two diners. I enjoyed the peppery arugula tossed with tomato, thinly sliced radish, almonds in a light Dijon vinaigrette and was delighted when the chèvre, rather than an ingredient in the salad, actually sat on top, prepared and looked like a fried mozzarella stick. Delish! For a $2.00 upcharge, I added crispy chunks of lardon, always a treat. Reflecting, this salad, perhaps a bit pricey, was the highpoint of the meal. At some point, a few small slices of crusty French arrived ... of course, we requested more. Joe selected the Fish Stew 'Bourride' ($25.00). Wow ... what a beautiful presentation ... but the broth was bland and the portion of shellfish could have been a bit heartier. I went a different route ... shrimp cocktail and a side of ratatouille. Unfortunately, the shrimp ($15.00) served with two small metal cups, each filled with a minuscule amount of sauce ... one with aioli and the other, a non descript cocktail sauce, was underwhelming ... limp and not chilled enough to my liking. They were dusted with an unappealing red 'powder,' not sure if it was paprika, and to me, was a turn off. Accompanying the beautifully plated dish was a handful of crunchy, savory cracker-like tidbits. Maybe, baked Parmesan crisps? Chef Nico's interpretation of Ratatouille ($6.00) included goat cheese which was a tasty addition. I would have enjoyed the dish more if the yellow squash and zucchini were not uniformly and thinly sliced. Oh well. We passed on desserts. Bo could not have been more engaging and efficient, frequently checking to see if anything was needed. I had high expectations ... perhaps, that was my mistake as too often, I'm disappointed. So, it was no surprise that our dinner at Nico left me wanting more. Perhaps we didn't make the best selections so I'd like to try it again. Maybe, dine on the patio and check out the raw bar offerings, or a relaxing weekend brunch. There's a lot to love about Nico. read more

Nico's you have been my favorite restaurant ever . I've brought many family and friends to dine with you. Tonight was an exception. No food for near and hour. Ammonia seafood for one of the plates. The most disappointing part was being challenged by management who said: 1- hour wait was standard. 2-we only had one bad plate and the others were fine 3- just because I am a customer doesnt mean I have the right to complain. 4-challenge that I was not a regular customer! 5- and most disappointing was that I should not return. NOPE. Don't bother. First of all, the staff is just plain rude. Not sure who they think they are but they all seem to have an attitude. I have been twice and both times I found our server to be flaky and moody. The oysters were "meh". I love oysters, and I forced myself to eat the last one. The Tuna Tartare was gummy... and lacked everything. Worst part was when it was 10 pm, and they had cleared our table entirely (water included) and waited for us to leave. We were excited to try Nico but were nervous it would be packed, luckily we showed up early and had no issues sitting on the patio. Great outdoor seating and outdoor bar, inside space also nice. Simple vibes throughout. Even though Wednesday is Happy Hour all day, we skipped drinks and went straight to oysters. 6 is their minimum, they have several Carolina options, several Maine/ Massachusetts. For main course we did steak and frites, and the Parisian Gnocchi. Steak and frites were great according to my husband. The sauce made the scallops and gnocchi delicious, the shrimp was surprisingly not the highlight. read more

First timer, didn't make a reservation but didn't realize they also take reservations for their bar seats. Staff was so friendly and got us seats! Our bartender was so lovely and he was very knowledgeable. Sis and I split oysters and the Nico cheeseburger. The presentation of the oysters was gorgeous and different from any other. Love NICO! This is like a more laid back, slightly cheaper version of The Ordinary and I'm not mad about it. Service was fantastic and food was even better. We got the tower for two and it was great. I could do without the periwinkles as they were way too time consuming and annoying to to eat. Calamari was good, too! It has a honey drizzle so slightly sweet and crunchy. It's served with aioli but it's not necessarily needed. We ended with the baked Alaska which was my first time trying it. Extremely delicious and just the right thing to end the night on. Drinks were great as well. I had the absinthe swizzle and man friend loved the tequila frappe. They also have a good wine list. Being stuck inside for several months, my husband and I wanted a Jude dinner out. And that's what we got. The entire staffed worked together like a well oiled machine. I made reservations for 2 at Nico online through Resy. We were assigned two bar stools at the end of the bar beside the entrance and next to the beer taps. It was a very undesirable location. Although the host said he would try to accommodate it didn't happen. There were several empty tables but were told that other guests who would be arriving later would be given those tables. we left and went to Red Drum which were very accommodating . I hope this was a communication issue and would like to give Nico another try but this experience was disconcerting. read more
