Delicious and great portions. Menu does not match what I have found online. Took a picture and to update.

Benedict and grits
Alison M.

My husband is a huge fan and has been here several times. He used to live just down the street so he would walk over with friends and his son when home for summer and eat either breakfast or lunch here. It's very reasonably priced and the menu has all the breakfast staples you want - benedicts, waffles, omelettes, eggs and hash, corned beef, etc. They also had chip beef and gravy! Large sandwich and lunch on the other side of the menu with salads and other items to please just about anyone. I went for my standard and got the eggs benedict and the eggs were perfectly cooked with a delicious hollandaise sauce and large serving of grits cooked to my granny's perfection. Husband got the corned beef hash and enjoyed it and my mom ordered more traditional with eggs, toast, and protein. Coffee was good and hot and fresh and kept being refilled by our attentive waitress. Solid first experience, will def. come back.

Chesapeake Bay Burger and some really tasty fries
Erin M.

The food is really good, I recommend the buffalo shrimp - yum! - and aside from great seafood, the burgers, fries, (I got the Chesapeake Bay Burger), and sandwiches are delicious too. It's a clean little restaurant, with tons of history, and best of all, the prices are reasonable. It's seat yourself and go early (or late) as there isn't a ton of seating. If you are in VB on vacation, this is a great little place for breakfast, lunch, or dinner that won't disappoint or break the bank.

a plate of oysters with a side of mashed potatoes

Ordered the seafood platter. For $35, I got: - 1 filet of bland fish - 3 bland shrimps - 3 bland scallops that were not cooked through - 3 salty oysters, also slimy and a bit disgusting - 1 extremely salty crabcake that tasted just like salt and nothing else - 1 side of lima beans tasting like it came out of an old can - 1 side of mashed potato We brought up the salty crabcake issue and the waitress' immediate response was 'we served it three times this evening and nobody said anything'. Not even a 'sorry, let me check with the kitchen' or something like that. When you work in a customer service capacity your job is to listen to the customers' concerns first instead of questioning them. Then find a solution. They replaced the crabcake with three puny shrimps. I'm amused and offended. It's as if they think I don't know what the value of a crabcake vs that of three kiddy shrimps is. Bad food accompanied by bad service. It is definitely a feat that this restaurant has been in business for 71 years.

A "Run-A-Way Bill" Favorite breakfast experience ... doesn't get any more "local" than "Nick's" in the Virginia Beach oceanfront. Home-made "creamed chipped-beef" over home-fries is my personal favorite! "Run-A-Way Bill" 01.29.16 ---- Virginia Beach, Virgina --- "Nick's" was my 1st breakfast visit after 4 months roaming the USA pARTy Trails! Besides their famous early-bird "Pooch" special, I go for their tasty-riffic "creamed cipped-beef" over their yummy-riffic home-fries. Service always leaves me with "More Smiles Than I Came In With!" too ... a "Run-A-Way Bill" Favorite USA eatery! "Run-A-Way Bill" was here! #RunAwayBill #VirginiaBeach 12.22.17 ---- 05.02.19 New ownership renovation added additional counter seating BUT the counter requires customers to sit side saddle and lean inward towards the counter. Same reliable serving team always makes me leave wanting more. "Nick's" has always been a "Run-A-Way Bill" Favorite eatery. 07.30.21

Bfast!!!!
Steve O.

Yeah I've got history with this place. Obviously Pooch sold..now new owner..upgraded but basic menu survived ...at least the ceiling tiles still remains! Yeah I'm from up North ..was a VB resident..but I still eat here when I come down!!!! NICKS ROCK!!!!

The food and service were fantastic. It's not fancy or in the heart of the strip, but worth going off the beaten path.

Brilliant idea. The hostess took our name and phone number and we received a txt when our table was ready. The hostess was very friendly and attentive. The ambiance was amazing. Since it is mainly a seafood restaurant the aesthetic was ocean or bay themed. They had great decorations of coral reef and other things found in the ocean around the restaurant. They had a great seating area for patrons who were waiting for a table. The service was impeccable. Our waitress was very attentive and knowledgeable about the menu. Since it was our first time at this restaurant we were unsure about what we should order. She gave great suggestions. We ordered the fried oysters, oyster burger, and shrimp with vegetables and eggs. We also ordered a pineapple crush and the localizer. The food was very flavorful and fresh. The oyster burger was very unique it had a fried oyster on top of the patty which was great. It was cooked to perfection and very juicy. The fried oysters were great as well. They came with Pita bread and spinach dip to make an oyster sandwich. Amazing!!! The drinks were on point as well. They weren't too strong but they weren't weak either. I recommend trying out this restaurant if you are in the area. It is totally worth the wait.

Easily enough for four people. I had the shrimp and grits with scallops, and it was hands down the best thing I've eaten all year. The chocolate espresso martini was the perfect complement to my meal. My wife loved her spicy margarita and described the French toast as beautifully balanced with fresh, warm flavors. This is a must-stop every time we come to VA. Highly recommend.

We made a special trip to Rustic Spoon for my husband's birthday because their website listed…read morescotch eggs, which was something he'd been craving forever and that we hadn't been able to find anywhere around town. It happened to be Restaurant Week, which made us a little nervous, but it ended up being totally fine. The dining room never felt overly crowded, the noise level was comfortable, and having the Restaurant Week prix fixe, drink specials, and regular menu all available gave us plenty of options without feeling overwhelming. One small note: the plastic logo cups served with the water decanter felt a little out of place. They were a bit sharp on the lips and didn't quite match the rest of the dining experience. Minor detail, but noticeable. The drinks, however, were excellent. On our server's recommendation, my husband ordered the Gingerbread Old Fashioned and I had the Salted Caramel Martini. Both were seasonal specials and both were fantastic. When we asked about the scotch eggs, our server explained they're normally a brunch-only item. We were a little disappointed (and may have made a few pouty faces while explaining we'd come specifically for them for his birthday), but we quickly let it go, it obviously wasn't her fault. What we didn't realize was that she went back and told the kitchen manager that it was his birthday and that we'd made the trip just for those scotch eggs. Since the kitchen wasn't slammed, they decided to make them anyway and surprised us with an order. We were honestly floored. My husband was thrilled. That kind of thoughtfulness is rare. And the scotch eggs were exactly what he'd been hoping for! They were crispy on the outside with a rich, savory center. For entrées, his Nashville Hot Chicken was juicy with the perfect amount of heat without being overwhelming. My Haystack Burger was stacked and delicious, though the BBQ sauce was strong enough to overshadow the pickled green tomato a bit. The fries were fantastic - crispy, battered, and perfect from first bite to last. Our server checked in at all the right times and kept drinks refilled without us needing to ask. The fact that she went out of her way to do something special during one of the busiest weeks on a restaurant's calendar says a lot about both her and the restaurant. Rustic Spoon is the kind of place that works just as well for a casual date night as it does for a birthday dinner or a night out with friends.

Appetizer: Try the biscuits with the sweet potato spread! Total quantity of 2. Dinner: Ended up with the catfish / whiting. Most comfort food probably has a lot of salt attached to it and not an everyday cuisine. Nevertheless, it was still good! The service was good as well. No complaints or attitudes from the server. It wasn't as busy as previous people reported which was nice. Enjoyed the art on the wall with the music vibe. Would repeat again with the other new restaurants located near the oceanfront. Best to always make a reservation with parking not directly in front of the restaurant but not too far of a walk. Overall 8.9/10

Service was fast, friendly, and very attentive to our table throughout the visit. I ordered the chicken and biscoff waffles and listen... that biscoff cookie butter infused waffle was AMAZING!! Sweet, flavorful, and honestly the star of the plate. I would absolutely order the waffle again. The chicken drumettes, however, were a little bland and lacked seasoning for me personally. Once I added hot sauce, honey, salt, and pepper, it brought the chicken to life and tasted much better. My daughter ordered the smothered chicken and biscuits, butter biscuits topped with cheesy eggs, fried chicken, and cajun cream sauce. The picture below may not look the most appetizing, but don't let that fool you because this dish was packed with flavor! The only downside was the eggs were a bit overcooked. My daughter is picky about eggs, so next time she said she'll ask for them lightly scrambled or over medium. Now let's talk about the drinks lol. I love a good hot cup of coffee and they did NOT miss with the coffee. Smooth, hot, and flavorful. My daughter also said the sweet tea was really good. Overall, I'd definitely come back, especially for that Biscoff waffle alone!

Our thoughts: Service: there was a breakdown in communication we requested to be seated outside and no one was assigned to take our order. So we had to go fetch someone to be serviced. They apologized. We were waiting to receive a steak knife to cut our fried chicken they forgot to bring that. Our server was very informative when asked about the restaurant concept and menu. She and the person she was training were very friendly. Food: we applaud the concept and the risk to infuse various cultures into the menu. Portion size for a $5 side of home fries was disappointing we are thinking it was maybe a half of a potato. The menu is diverse and the price point isn't bad. Ambiance: ok, we sat outside. We liked the diversity of customers coming in. Unfortunately this is a one and done for us and not because we are visiting just because we are food critics and know what we like.

I already knew this was my destination as I had been following them since they opened in VB. Upon our arrival we found the Cafe about a 1/4th of the way full so I had hopes for breakfast in a quiet setting. Even though there was a steady flow of traffic, we were able to dine in a relaxed setting without feeling rushed. I mention this because with it being a holiday weekend full of Jeepers, I fully expected them to be packed. The wait to order was too long as it left me staring at the pastry window so long I almost ordered one of everything however; I refrained from doing so but still bought 4 pastries, French toast & seasoned potatoes. Yes yes, alot of food for 1 person but I still had 2 days left in my visit and well, I have a thing for pastries. The pastries were: mango & passion fruit eclair, a pineapple muffin, lemon raspberry cake & profiteroles. I loved everything with the exception of the eclair. It wasn't anything against the eclair, it's just the mango/passionfruit mixture was just too passionate for my tastes. The muffin reminded me of my own homemade upside pineapple cake without all the brown sugar. It was light and buttery. The Lemon raspberry slice was delightful & not the least bit tart or too sweet. A mixture of both flavors without either one overpowering the other. The cake was super moist, perfect. The profiteroles were my favorite. They reminded me of that feeling I had the 1st time I tasted them while living in Italy. The choux perfectly baked and so delightfully light. The French toast was good enough without the side of syrup. The star for me of the breakfast items were the potatoes. I LOVED them. They were served HOT, seasoned just right with their insides softer that a baby bottom. I coulda just ordered 2 servings of those & bypassed the toast. All in all, well worth the wait. The folks were friendly, the Cafe clean and the seating plentiful and comfortable. I would recommend this place for both pastries & French toast & spuds.
