Had heard great things about Doc Taylor's and some things were great- the food wasn't one of those things. And if you're a coffee lover, the coffee was "just ok" The service was very good and prompt. The atmosphere was cool in a beach vibe kind of way. My wife's pancakes were cold as were the hash browns. I had 2 eggs, which I asked for "over medium" but they ran like they stole something. Walked in at about 9:30am. Waited for 30 minutes at the waiting area where there's a full bar. They have foosball table at the back. Had mimosas and Irish frozen coffee which were very nice. Time flew by and we had out tsble ready. Our server Heidi was wonderful. She really took good care of us. Service was super quick. The ambiance was cozy and casual. Steak and eggs was fine. Finding Doc Taylor's wasn't the easiest--tucked away and a little tricky to spot--but once we stumbled across the parking lot and saw the "Parking for Doc Taylor's" we found our way. Once we stepped inside, it was worth it. Our server, Heidi, was excellent--friendly, full of menu knowledge, attentive, and kept things moving with a smile. The coffee came out dark and strong (exactly how it should be), and the $3.50 breakfast cocktails are an absolute steal. The Screwdriver was a great way to start a day of sightseeing. I went with the biscuits & gravy. The portion was huge. Heidi shared the gravy isn't just homemade, it's made fresh to order. It was thick enough to stick to the fork, but not firm or clumpy. I would've loved just a bit more seasoning. A side of bacon sealed the deal--crispy, salty perfection. The eggs Benedict were ooey gooey perfection, as well! We came for breakfast and had a great experience overall. Here's the deal: The restaurant is located on a side street off the strip in what appears to previously be an older home converted to a restaurant. There is free parking in the back of the restaurant and should this be full there is street and a paid parking lot across the street. The restaurant has multiple rooms including a screened and covered patio with table spacing nicely separated so that you don't feel like patrons are on in each others personal space. Service was quick, very friendly and attentive throughout the meal. Food was served speedily. The food itself was very good and portions are plentiful. Nothing too unique about what we had but - bacon and eggs- but fresh, and cooked perfectly to order. The restaurant will accommodate custom food requests to the extent possible. Coffee was good, and my cup never went empty. I would not hesitate to recommend eating here- a solid experience and comfortable atmosphere. Happy eating! read more

We were originally headed to one of the popular breakfast spots on Atlantic, but after reading some mixed reviews and seeing a ridiculous surcharge for egg dishes was still in effect, we decided to skip the tourist trap and turned to Yelp for advice. Doc Taylor's kept popping up with great reviews--and since we have a soft spot for biscuits and gravy--we hopped in the car and made our way over. Finding the place was a little tricky. When our GPS said we had arrived, there wasn't much signage to reassure us we were in the right spot. Kinda one of those "if you know, you know" kinda joints. The only real clue was the parking signs for their small attached lot. Once we parked, we weren't totally sure where to enter, but walking through the alley led us to the front of a small white house. Seeing people dining on the enclosed porch was the confirmation we needed! Once inside, the hostess was super friendly and sat us right away. Heidi, our waitress, was amazing--warm, welcoming, and very helpful with first-timer suggestions. We started with a screwdriver and a greyhound while deciding on food, which was the perfect kick-off. I love a good eggs benedict but more often than not, the eggs are overcooked and the dish misses the mark because of it. Heidi assured me the cook knew how to properly poach an egg, so I trusted her and ordered the Eggs Benedict. She wasn't wrong--the eggs were spot on, the hollandaise was deliciously homemade, and the dish came together perfectly. The hashbrowns could've used a little more flavor, but a sprinkle of salt/pepper and some hot sauce did the trick. He ordered the biscuits and gravy and they were also incredibly well done. And the price....WOW! We would have paid double at the tourist trap, and not had this great of an experience. Overall, we loved starting our morning at Doc's and will definitely make it our go-to breakfast spot the next time we're in Virginia Beach. We were the third party to arrive when they opened at 7am so they were not busy yet. We have been here 3-4 times over the years and the food and service were amazing. Today the food was sub par. There were egg shells in my eggs and the hash browns were cold. We mentioned this to the server and she said they have received several complaints lately especially about eggshells. I am so glad we went to this spot for pre sand soccer fuel. We arrived on a Sunday at 8 and our 4 was seated quickly. The food was served - tasty and quick - no frills. We got The Doctor's Nola surprise - Dr Tuttle's French Toast (small - plenty for my 10 yo) - Corpsman Ham & Cheese and 2 sides of crispy hashbrown (ask for it how you like it). There were plenty of cheap drink specials but I opted for coffee - which was strong and delicious. The place looks like an out of place house on the resort strip, but it was filled with polite and nice hospitality and walls filled with history. I don't go out much because I have an autistic child who can't sit still and is completely nonverbal and stims. I was in town visiting my sister and I've been to your establishment prior to becoming a mother but it's been about 5 years since visiting. I remembered enjoying going there before but now being a mother to an autistic child I have anxiety going anywhere because people judge me and my son every day. This beautiful waitress took the time out of her busy schedule (it was last Saturday around 1pm) and she came over just to tell me how she sees me and how proud she is and how great of a mother I was. I didn't say much to her at the moment as honestly I don't know how to respond to these things anymore... my sister was nearly crying for me... as we left I saw the waitress again and said thank you and she told me again how well I was doing. I don't know her name... but I want to say THANK YOU for noticing me and my son and saying those kind words to us. You don't know how much that meant to me and I'll always remember you. Doc Taylors has the following $3 drinks: *mimosas: orange juice and champagne *manmosa: orange juice, vodka and champagne *screwdrivers: orange juice and vodka *greyhounds: grapefruit juice and vodka *bloody mary: tomato juice, vodka, and other stuff I wanted to try something different so I ordered the Greyhound. Great hole in the wall spot that serves up Southern comfort food. We stopped by Doc Taylor's for an easy, breezy brunch, and everyone in our brunch party was pleased with our dining outcomes. For my brunch delights, I went with a chipped beef and gravy dish (unfortunately, I forgot the funny name associated with the dish). The chipped beef and gravy were served over two pieces of Texas toast. Actually, I do not think that I ever had that combination. From my experience, this dish is typically served over 1-2 biscuits. That said, the Texas toast did not hinder the dish. In fact, the Texas toast gave the dish a bit of a French toast vibe. Unfortunatley, I found the gravy to be a bit bland, causing me to dump quite a bit of pepper, salt, and Tabasco sauce on my plate. Since no brunch is completel without an adult beverage, Doc Taylor's has you covered with brunch cocktails starting at $3.75. This list includes: Blood Marys, mimosas, screwdrivers, Greyhounds, and champagne spritzers. The service was pretty awesome, and the staff was great. I got the Doc Taylor which was delicious! I substituted the fried egg with no problem and that parmesan tomato was so good. There is usually a wait but there is a building next door you can order drinks at while you wait. I had the Crab Benedict and while it's usually amazing....the crab wasn't as fresh this time and had an awful fishy smell. Let's just say my tummy hasn't been ok for a day. Doc Taylor's is one of my biggest weekend cravings. I still fantasize about that grilled cheese I had here a few years ago. But in the months since that review I have continued to return for my brunch cravings and those $2.50 mimosas. I've also learned you can add bacon to their bloody marys too which feels like a good reason to update my review, I also just wanted to show a little love to one of my OG favorites at the beach. Everything from my original review still stands and I am so happy that they are still doin' their thing the best they can during this pandemic. I see that their most recent COVID update (from April) says that they are closed, I can confirm that that is an old update and they are open. Wishing them all the success during all of this. --- I simply adore this place. I have been here with friends, coworkers, and even on a date. There is something for everyone on the menu. You can dress up and have "fancy brunch" or you can come in in an outfit that may or may not be what you slept in last night and still feel right at home. The beach cottage vibe brings back the "old Virginia Beach" vibes and I just love it. Full disclosure- I usually only visit during the "off-season" so the noise is rarely over the top and I typically wait no more than 5-10minutes for a table if I even wait at all. During the summer months you may want to plan for a longer experience. It is a breakfast spot in Virginia beach, close from the boardwalk, which is a major advantage in their favor. 1. Food - 3.5 stars It is totally okay. Nothing special. The toast was okay, the eggs were just done fine and edible, bacon was way too much done and didn't taste too well, hash browns were actually bad, which is something I never thought I'd say. Bloody Mary was drinkable, but not that great etc. In short, it is a decent place to eat, not great, not bad at all. 2. Service - fine Our server lady was nice, but was hard to find suddenly and we had to go to the bar and asked to pay since we had to leave. 3. Ambience- looks like someone's house from the outside, and it is an interesting set up inside. What would've been a patio and living room areas are all dining areas and feels cozy since it is after all in a normal house. I personally hated the cold air conditioner when the outside temperature was barely 70F. I was hoping I would get warm by sitting inside, but no.
