So you're driving along thinking you have nothing at home to eat. You pass a joint with a sign that says "Best Gyros In America". Of course you don't believe the sign. Maybe if you purchase a gyros sandwich within the next 10 minutes, they'll also throw in a trip to Mykonos? Am I dreaming? The disbeliever caused me to make a U turn and head back to Nick's. I'm glad I did. Even though I'm very well traveled, I haven't sampled gyros in enough US cities to proclaim Nick's as the best in America. However, it has to be close. There's no mistaking that those pylons of ground meat spinning around the fire are homemade. At almost twice the size of their mass produced cousins, their aroma permeates the restaurant. The meat has a great texture, is perfectly mixed with herbs & spice , and just the right combination of fatty and lean cuts of lamb & beef. Delicious. The gyros plate includes fries, raw onion and tomato, pita, and tzatziki sauce. My review is based on 2 visits I've made to Nick's recently. The first was on a Friday afternoon about 2pm. I ordered a burger everything with fries. Good tasting burger,lots of toppings and a good amount of fries. For under $6.50. If you sell good food at a fair price and it's a decent portion I will patronize your fine establishment. Seeing how much I enjoyed my first visit I returned with a friend the next day for lunch. It's said that a good gyros place will have 2 gyros spits; Nick's has 3. And they are always being used. I ordered the gyros plate and it was quite good. Fresh meat; good amount and very good tzatziki sauce. And the gyros was quite good without the sauce. We went during the lunch hour and it was quite busy. There was 5-6 people ahead of us but from the time I ordered the food was ready in 5 min. Nick's has a good set-up. Person at the register, the owner and 2 people making the food and another employee constantly cleaning the tables in use. It was a well run operation as evidenced by the smoothness of the lunch rush. There are a lot of items on the menu. If a gyros isn't your palate that day there will be something else to choose from. A few outdoor tables as well. Right at Harlem/Touhy at the East Edison Park/Niles border on the west side of Harlem. Nick's Drive-in advertises their gyros as the best and the gyros plate I ordered and consumed certainly backs up that argument. read more

I first began to patron Nick's back in 1987, where after a long day of my college preparatory studies, I would frequently relax and enjoy a smooth banana milkshake on the grease infested east bound 290 Touhy. But alas- those days of yore are far removed as my experience today enforced... I ordered a chicken sandwich with cheddar and bacon- sans mayo, and what I received much to my chagrin- a prepubescent excuse for a chicken breast with A strip of bacon slathered in fake nacho cheese sauce. Now when I ordered the sandwich, the elderly gentlemen underneath the pointy hat informed me they have Mozzarella, American and Cheddar cheese, so rightfully I assumed that cheddar cheese actually meant- CHEDDAR cheese! NOT some condensed Aged Cheddar Cheese Sauce known on the market as the "Profit Maker" because it gives you 159 ounces of servable product with every can by adding 32 ounces of water and 32 ounces of pepper juice. Oh yeah- don't let me get started about the "added flavor". anyway... when i approached ol' gray nuts about my concerns, he then basically ridiculed me in front of the whole line waiting to order. as if I'm crazy for wanting a slice of real cheddar?!?!? on top of all of it- my tamale was drenched in water and runnier than shart. all in all- a TERRIBLE dining experience. Not sure what happened to this place. It used to be so good and now it's nasty! I haven't been here in a few years but had a gyros and fries craving yesterday. There was NOBODY in there. The decor is still the same as it was in the 70's and probably hasn't been cleaned since then either. The counter has all the paper and plastic wrap, silverware, etc, right in the open which doesn't seem too sanitary. The TV was blasting loud. The guy working there couldn't have been more UN-friendly... he took my money, threw my change on the counter, and sat down in a booth to read a book. Whatever. So I get home and open the bag, and the grease was dripping all over the place. The food was on a plastic plate covered with foil... not even a styrofoam container. The meat was floating in the grease and the pita was soaked. The tzaziki sauce was warm and runny and I couldn't even eat it. The gyros has such an overpowering garlic flavor it's almost too much. And I LOVE garlic. But the grease.. OMG the grease. Worse than any greasy gyros I've ever had. The fries were delicious although super greasy and there were hardly any in the bag. Almost $11 for something I could barely eat. Sorry Nick's, you're not "the best" anymore. Now I know why there are never any customers in here anymore. read more

It was a Sunday and my regular go-to gyros place (see my reviews) was closed. I had the craving so, I checked Yelp for a close place. Nicks was the choice. I read the reviews and it was half and half positive and negative. I figured 1:15 pm was going to be a hassle if the place was popular. Pulled into the parking lot and there were 3 cars. That should have been the first warning shot. There were 4 people sitting in these 70's sty;e stationary tables with the orange formica, attached bench type seats. I placed my order. $6.10 for a gyros sandwich? I figured for that much it should be piled high with meat. I was wrong. I must be spoiled by my regular stop as this place didn't come close to the amount of meat I get for $4.55 . What is worse was the meat had little in the way of spices except for an over abundant amount of garlic of which after the digestion cycle will cause the EPA to issue an emergency HAZMAT alert. Now for the grease. Soaked the wrapper and had it not been for the foil protective wrap the bag would have been soaked and surely torn. The tomatos were eldery and mushy,the onions abundant and the tzatzike watery. The fries were actually good but with these prices could have been more generous with the portion size. Next time I have that gyros craving, I will make sure it is every day but sunday so I can go back to my old same place. BIG PEOPLE: Don't bother eating in. You won't fit in these booths. I doubt very few over the age of 40 could unless you have a teenagers physique and girth. read more

Love this place, and have been coming here for over 20 years, which is practically most of my life! I have to say the majority of the mediocre reviews are ridiculous. Is this Fogo de Chao? No, its a gyro & burger place. It has the 70s ambiance, and it has a constant from the 70s, QUALITY, which other places do not. They don't skimp on ingredients or replace them with poor quality cheaper alternatives, and that my friends is why this place is around and their parking lot packed. I always get a gyro with grilled onions, mozzarella sticks and double cheeseburger and split it with a friend. Call ahead and your order will be waiting for you when you get in, sweet. Fresh ingredients, great quality gyro meat, love it! Some folks commented on pulling into parking lot and only 3 cars being there. (stop by here on a Saturday at noon, and I dare you to park in that lot!!) Are you rating the parking lot or the quality of food? Or another complaining about "maybe its just a bad cut", bad cut of what? bad cut burger? bad cut gyro? I mean you clearly weren't getting a steak here. Lets be realistic, its fast food, but damn good fast food with an old school touch. I've moved out of the area, but still make the drive in just for the quality. This is a family owned and operated place, with the owner or his son at the cashier. Came in late no one really there and ordered the Philly cheese steak. Avoid this as there's no flavor and huge bread that was oversized for the meat. The bread was toasted nicely. Fries were ok. Worst part was the older white haired man who put my order together. Basically threw my sandwich on my tray so the basket was tilted on its side. Didn't even bother to fix it as he was busy doing nothing. The cook was the only one who acknowledged as I left saying thank you. Gave the 1 star for that last acknowledgment. For the most part, Nick's is just your run of the mill old-fashioned fast food restaurant. I don't know why it's called a "drive in"-- I guess as opposed to having girls skate out to your car a la American Graffiti. Anyway, the food is tasty. They have the usual: burgers, gyros, rotisserie chicken. But, I always come here hoping that the soup of the day will be the homemade egg lemon. It's really authentic, and you don't have to go all the way to Greektown for it. Excellent. read more

Nothing Special. I decided to try the Gyros sandwich. It was just OK. There are much better Gyros sandwiches in the Chicago area. I purchased the Gyros plate and there weren't that many fries with the thing. It was right in the middle of dinner time and there was only one couple in the place. The price was a little high. I paid over $6 for the Gyros and fries. This is the first time I tried Nick's. It is very old looking inside. I'm not sure if I will return again. I passed by this place hundreds of times and never went in. That changed recently, and I was pleasantly surprised. The staff is very friendly and nice. Our order was taken quickly and came up fast as well. While we waited (we were taking out), we were asked if we wanted any water while we sat. We declined, but thought that was a good gesture to make while customers waited. Both my husband and I ordered the gyros plate, and we were not disappointed. The meat was so tender and tasted great. We had more than enough food for dinner and lunch the next day! My only complaint is that I should have ordered another pita to go with all the extra food! We will certainly be back! read more

They have been doing this since the 70s so they must be doing something right. Classic neighborhood burger, dog and gyro joynt. The gyros are made to order and off the spit as they should be. They also drop fries when you order, so they are always hot made fresh. A little pricey for what you get. Gyros fries and a small Coke was $10.25 I'm admit that I'm an odd duck, but when the heat kicked on the place smelled like urinal mint. Odd indeed. I finally went here after being told that this was the best gyros in the area by many people, and if that's true that's sad. Inside it looks like they haven't remodeled since the 60's, and if the food was good I wouldn't care but it wasn't the case. The gyros were gross. The meat had an odd taste and didn't seem seasoned, and the tzatziki was thin and not creamy and the pita tasted stale. My kids had chicken strips and fries, and they were fine nothing special. I've been here numerous times but I've never tried the chicken until now. I ordered the bbq chicken and it was delicious. The sauce was a little too vinegary which is why I'm giving 4 stars but everything else was great. The chicken was moist and tender. It fell right off the bone and the skin was tasty. I also ordered fries which I liked because they weren't too salty. The half chicken also came with Cole slaw and garlic bread. I'm not a fan of Cole slaw so I didn't even eat it, but the garlic bread was also delicious. It's not the healthiest meal, but it's tasty and worth the price. I paid 8 bucks for all the items I listed and it was a good portion. One thing I really liked about nicks is that they have a tv that always plays the sporting events of the Chicago sports teams. Had 4 burgers for takeout that were not cooked and were raw. Taste and Quality is not like it used to be here. 2/4 of us felt sick from eating here. Was up all night cause of it . Place needs some prep standards does not look clean. Also didn't like the fact owner was cutting gyro meat off the spit and eating it with his fingers. I used to love Nick's gyros but the one I recently got was not up to par. It had weird seasoning and was a bit dry. The fries were super greasy.
