Not bad at all--actually, really good. I ordered the caprese salad and added steak. The owner suggested it and said I'd love it. My first thought? Who eats caprese salad with steak? Something that shouldn't work well, right? Well... I was wrong. Very wrong. It worked surprisingly well. The steak was incredibly succulent (and yes, that word absolutely belongs in the dictionary). You still get that fresh caprese flavor, but with a solid steak kick--you really can't go wrong. The owner explained they grind their steak in-house. Come on--that's old school. Who even does that anymore? I'm so glad they still do. If I'm ever in the area again, I'll definitely stop by. Everyone was genuinely friendly--from the cashier/owner to the cook. I stopped in for a quick lunch today and I ordered the Chicken Gyro. The good is it was a lot of meat packed in the Pita. Beyond that, it really lacked flavor. I should've known better to order this as I didn't see a gyro spit. Also the interior was weird. Beyond 3 tables occupied there was all kinds of stuff on one table. There were a number of employees that could've straightened up including cleaning the tables and putting the chairs back in. There's no need for me to come back here. Y'all know I'm a sucker for Greek food, and this place had one of the BEST Greek food I've ever had. Located in Lincolnwood, Backyard Grill is a mid size counter-service food place with parking on all sides of the restaurant. It's very easily accessible and there were a ton of spots available (we came here on a Tuesday around 11:30am). I got the chicken skewer dinner (2 chicken skewers, Greek potatoes, rice, vegetables, and pita with tzatziki sauce), a side dinner salad but added feta and olives to it, and then my sister got their cold cut salad (blend of chopped crispy iceberg & romaine lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, red & green peppers, red onion, egg, turkey, ham, salami, cheddar & Swiss cheese). It was really big! The portion sizes here are above average in my opinion and are all fairly priced. I was obsessed with my chicken skewer plate. The chicken was juicy and charbroiled perfectly, and the Greek potatoes were so lemony, herby, and soft. Their feta and Greek dressing here are A1, too! The food did not disappoint. The only reason I docked a star is because of the inside and ambiance. There was one long table in the restaurant with a bunch of papers, a laptop, flyers, newspapers, and just a bunch of random stuff on it which didn't look too good and no one could sit at. They have a lot of long tables put together and not a lot of 4-tops or 2-tops, so you may have to sit next to strangers if it's busy. The place could've been a little cleaner. The food was bland! We ordered an Italian beef. Flavorless outside of the hot peppers I asked for. The Philly cheese was not good. My daughter took it home and added seasoning. Best skewers around! Editing this review after a catering experience. We eat here a lot. The food is always delicious so we decided to cater for a big party that we had for 60 guests. I'm writing this review so others don't experience the same we did. We ordered 6 pounds of beef and received 20 rolls. That's fine. We ordered 2 full trays of Italian sausage and meatballs for 40 people each (as described in menu). We expected 40 pieces in each tray since their menu suggests that a full tray is for 40. Don't be fooled. It's only for 20 people. We only received 20 half cut Italian sausages with 20 rolls and 20 meatballs with 20 rolls. Meaning it fed 20 people, not 40. Meatballs weren't large enough to cut in half and broke apart when I tried. We didn't have enough food. We had to go back and pay for a tray of chicken just to make sure this party we had was entirely fed. Although I hate to write this review, I wouldn't want another party to be shorted. The owner called them appetizers saying not everyone will eat "one of each" Odd because the menu does not suggest they are appetizer portions and who is he to determine what other food we had at our party and what people will eat. Also if I order food for 40 people, I expect food for 40 people. It doesn't matter what people will or will not eat. Stressful, expensive experience but lesson learned. BYG is a great lunch place. I pick up for lunch at least a few times a month with co-workers. They have a pretty large menu, but everything I've ordered has been very tasty. I use to live around the corner from this place. Glad I stopped in while visiting family here in Chicago. It's been remodeled since I was here 10 yrs ago. The food is as good if not better . Had the half Greek chicken. It was tasty! What I also liked is they delivered on my request for extra well when it hits the grill. The chicken is legit oven braised with Greek potatoes rice coleslaw and some vegetables. I suggested they steam their vegetables instead of boil as they were over cooked. Been dining and getting takeout here for about 14 years. A great deal in my opinion is the Grecian chicken. It is a good price, tastes delicious and comes with tasty sides of potato and vegetables. There are other sides but I really like those two. I have also had the chopped chicken salad about 50 times as well as the cheeseburger and fries and ham sub sandwich. If you're in the area of Devon and Pulaski it is worth dropping in to try it out. There is a liquor store next door if you want to have a beer while you eat. read more

I really , really feel sorry to have to post this review. In the past( 20+ years) my family and I have never been disappointed in any visits to this pseudo - Greek American fast food restaurant! But since the pandemic hit, and my sister left the neighborhood (2&1/2 years ago) I have not been back to partake of their food offerings. This weekend we visited , and right from the start, upon entering, we got a bad vibe! The couple in front of us were not wearing any masks, and were not even asked to show any proof of their vaccinations ! Do we decided that our food would be taken to go ( the people were eating inside w/o masks), and we lived approx 5 miles away! Problems continued! Asked the owner Nick why he was not complying with any required Covid-19 mandates to protect his clientele or employees; he pretended not to be aware of what I asked of him, yet he was right there when his cashier rang up their orders! He then seemed to question his employee, and the person looked like a deer caught in a semi-truck's headlights!! And, when we asked to order a baby-back rib dinner , we were told that the price was $23.00, not $20.00 as listed on their website's order page! And when I inquired why it was more than it was listed , they told me that prices were open to changes, and the advertised prices were not accurate! That would not have been a deal-breaker, but when we got home, the rib dinner was incredibly of very, very poor quality ! The garlic bread was totally soggy, the ribs were dry, the sauce was not great, and then it occurred to us that the ribs and sauce were apparently the same as if they were purchased from a supermarket - you know , the kind that is sold in a plastic shrink wrap ($9.99 a pkg,)! Now, the 15% obvious markup aside, if the food was of decent quality, this review might not be posted. In closing, one needs to ask about what you are buying before you drop $40+ , as this once good restaurant is not above cutting corners ( or quality) in order to make a few extra bucks! If Nick is so concerned about recovering his lost volume , he should be really worried about shortchanging the customers that he still has! Or, if you enter an establishment , and they do not care about Covid-19, just walk out, never to return again; only then the owner(s) might wake up before it's too late! Buyer beware. read more

Absolutely delicious. I have been a regular for the past 2 years and have to say their selection is amazing. Literally can't go wrong with choosing. Everything here is homemade and you can tell. My favorite options here are the Spinach pie (absolutely the best I've had), their salads are abundant and super filling. House dressings are great. And their daily soups are super hearty. I like their rice and chicken soup and spinach lentil soup. You can tell they are made fresh, these soups have so much flavor and are healthy with fresh veggies. Their prices are competitive especially for the portions you get. I never get tired of this place. Been here a couple of times and I'm a fan. I usually go for the gyros with warm pita bread and a lovely tzatziki sauce. Another go-to is the Italian Beef with sweet peppers. The beef was tender and flavorful. They also have spanish pies (quite nice with a flaky crust) that are displayed at the counter. The menu is quite extensive from what you would find in a backyard picnic to family style set menus. The family menus are great for carry-outs. The portions are huge and come with a range of menu items such as kababs and roasted chicken. I find the ribs can be a bit hit or miss (a little dry sometimes). But, overall, the food is nice. The staff are always friendly as well. Atmosphere: The restaurant has this cute little porch area so it literally is like dining for a backyard cookout. The ambiance is very relaxed and casual. He muttered something that sounded like, "HHHmanjhahanhja". I said, "um, hi, I'd like to place an order for pickup". I guess I had the right place because he said, "yeah... ? Hello? Go ahead!"... in a not-so-nice-guy-voice. When I ordered my club in a sub, he asked if I wanted everything. I said no, and he SIGHED a deep, audible sigh. Clearly, he hates his life and his job if the fact that I don't want tomatoes and vinegar on my sub makes him so sad. The rest of my order (2 cheese fries and an Italian combo) were not sigh worthy, apparently. I was barked at, "10 minutes!" and given a number. My dude comes home... and instead of 2 orders of cheese fries, we have one. Fantastic. My sandwich was good. I appreciated that there weren't any tomatoes or vinegar. My dude's Italian combo was awful. They cut the sausage in half when they cook it which makes it incredibly dry. The beef was chewy. He didn't finish it. Okay first time visiting this restaurant. Greeted by loyal customers. When asked by the loyalist, the recommendations varied so, I went with the server's recommendation. Chicken skewer sandwich and trust this foodie the sandwich did not disappoint!!! Hot grilled chicken pieces, crunchy "fresh" veggies, nice tzatziki sauce and did I mention served on a fresh oven roasted pita bread!! Filling but not stuffed $7 plus tax.
