Was excited to try out this place that I kept passing by in the past, not knowing what kind of cuisine they served. I assumed that with their name, that they might serve barbecues? Than I read something on instagram that they serve the best gyros, I just had to swing by. I ordered their Gyros Dinner Plate and their Pork Chops Dnner Plate. I also got their Kefte Dinner Plate for my son Alex. Alex said his kefte plate was good. I, on the other hand, found my touted Gyros plate, kinda "meh". The meat was kinda bland, although those humongous greek potato wedges were awesome! I bought the pork chops for din-din with my wife later that night. Unfortunately, the chops were tough and chewy! I know it's tough to cook pork chops, but, they're a restaurant. You'd think they'd know how to cook pork chops the right way. So, in conclusion, it was a big letdown for me on this new find. I'd have to say that their servings are quite abundant, but It terribly lacks in taste and texture, and I don't think quantity equals quality here. read more

While stopping through the area for another errand, we decided to make a stop at Charcoal Flame Grill for lunch. It's a standalone building with it's own parking lot. We didn't notice until our way out but they also have a drive-thru, and signs that say they offer delivery/are on DoorDash, so with multiple options, Charcoal Flame is convenient. This building looks like it possibly used to be an old 90s/00s KFC or Pizza Hut or something, but it's cozy and clean and we love an easy access parking lot. The menus are expansive and you order at the counter when you walk in. There are plenty of tables for dining in, and a few were taken while we were there. There was a steady stream of phone orders coming in for pick up, and the restaurant was busy overall. We were helped right away and the staff at the counter were so friendly. I ordered a Maxwell street sausage as a meal ($5 additional for a drink and fries) and my partner ordered the American Gyro sandwich and also as a meal. We grabbed a table and our drinks from the fountain machine and only waited a few minutes for the number on our receipt to be called with our order. The food here is so fresh and delicious. This is one of the best Maxwell street sausages I've had around, the bread was perfect and soft inside and crispy on the outside with the sausage split and grilled and perfectly sweet caramelized onions. The fries looked like they came in frozen/pre-cut but were fried up perfect and a generous portion. The Gyro came stacked with meat, it wasn't dry, and had great flavor. Because the food was so delicious I decided to grab a piece of baklava to go, which I was assured was homemade and delicious - and they were right. So sweet, fresh, textured, rich, luxurious. Don't skip the baklava when you stop by! This is definitely a spot that will be added to our regular rotation of lunch/dinner spots around town. This is a casual counter-service gyro joint - it has undergone many name changes, but the ownership (appears to have) stayed the same. The food is consistent day in and day out. They have both American (beef/lamb) and Greek (pork) gyros, which is the big reason I frequent this place. The chicken leg quarters are an amazing value for the portions you get. Ever drive by someplace and smell and aroma that makes the car want to drive itself into the parking lot? That is exactly what happened here. There are few things that cause my car to be willing to careen across traffic to get somewhere and Charcoal Flame is one of those places. When you walk in you are greeted with by someone who looks and talks to like family. They take the time to explain the menu, the options, and the system. When he got to the soup or salad question I asked which kind of soups and he said chicken something. I honestly don't know if it was a word I never heard or just heard him wrong, but I took the chance and went with it. Let me tell you... chicken something is possibly the best soup I ever had in my life. All standards for chicken something soup have been set. The soup and drink were provided before I went to sit down. When my rib tips and rice were ready, they called my number and I brought it back to my seat. The ribs were good. The sauce provided a huge amount of flavor and they were covered completely. The rice is a great flavored rice that had me thinking of the Mediterranean region. Then there is the price. Charcoal Flame Grill has been around in the Morton Grove' hood for a while, and their menu offers items such as spanakopita, Grecian boneless pork chops, and daily specials. This place is known for their pork gyros, but I came here to try their American gyros instead. I ordered: +the American Gyro Sandwich, which comes with onions, tomato slices, and tzatziki - the onions and the tzatziki came separately and on the side, which I appreciated; when the gyro meats are made-to-order and are super hot, you don't want the tzatziki sauce to be all warm! Same goes for the onions. Unfortunately, the tzatziki was super bland and super runny, having such a thin consistency. The onions came in a bag, and I wasn't really a fan of the amount of parsley that was mixed in. The gyro meat itself was fine, but the portions seem a little less compared to other gyros spots. Now, the pita, was one of the better ones I've had - it was nice and buttery, super fluffy and fresh. Staff were very friendly and welcoming, and there was ample amount of seating inside. There were plenty of call-ins and carry-out orders, too. Yes, this one was a pleasant surprise. I'd been told throughout the years that this location is "just okay" and too overpriced. I decided to give it a go. Well worth a shot! Pricey for what you're getting. But very standard in the gyro business as far as paying relatively under 20.00 for a decent sized meal. Their Greek salads look phenomenal as I was waiting for my food. Fresh olives and pita bread! Their Greek styled gyro sandwich was great. A little bit of different type of meat to the American gyro or at least chopped up differently. Comes with some fries already in the pita. Baklava was just okay. I'd hold off. My first memory of this place is wow, how my 6yo inhaled 80% of her adult sized burger in one sitting. Dang gurl, slow that growth spurt down! I would like to come back to try their burgers, just like my mini me. On our visit though, I wasn't feeling ultra hungry, so opted for the Meditteranean chicken sanddwich, which included pesto, Swiss cheese, and LTO. It was an extremely hearty serving, so lasted me 2 sittings. My husband's gyro plate got 2 thumbs up, and I can vouch for how legit the mozz sticks are. Crispy, ooey gooey, and piping hot! I've been meaning to drop in here for a long time, and the stars finally aligned to pick up a couple of Greek gyro dinners.  This place is well known for offering the authentic all-pork Greek gyros as well as the traditional American style gyro of a mix of beef and lamb.  I picked up two carryout Greek gyro dinners for $14.50 each, and which included sides of roasted potatoes and rice and a cup of avgolemono soup.  The dinner was generously sized and they offer a good value and it's no surprise that this place is popular with high ratings. Well, I enjoyed the Greek gyro and it was different than expected.  The pork was crispy and tasty but slightly dry (like pork belly cuts), but overall still delicious especially with the tzatziki sauce, red onions, and tomatoes provided, but the sauce was really needed.  Overall, nice to try, but I think I prefer the American style gyros as it is normally more moist and tender and I like lamb anyway.  I think it's just a personal preference, and depending on what I felt like eating at any given time, the Greek pork gyro could still work.  Perusing the reviews after the meal, it looks like roughly a 50/50 split on preference for Greek over traditional American.  My vote goes with beef/lamb but both gyros are good.  For what it's worth, my son had the other dinner, and he had the same opinion. While they were preparing the carryout, and as I often do if not interfering with anything, I killed time with the staff.  The two attendants up front, Elizabeth and Gus, were friendly and a hoot.  They encouraged me to also talk to Greg, the appreciative but busier long-time owner, and he obliged me with a Yelp photo op.  They have a comfortable dining room with a view across Dempster St of the newish Sawmill outdoor mall.  Great place, and drop by and check out your gyro preference. read more

Although I wouldn't call this an fully authentic Greek eatery, the food was remarkable enough to warrant a high rating. Counter service was quick and efficient as well. Their menu seems to fuse items found from your typical ma-and-pa red hot joint, as well as from gastronomic Greek street food places. I settled for the pork gyros plate w/ my choice of lentil soup. The soup was pretty average, with lentils not too mushy. Just wish it was served a bit hotter. But let me say, the pork gyros from here were the most tender and herby ones I have EVER had!! The rice pilaf packed the perfect softness (while not being watery) and potato wedges were nicely pillowy and lemony. The pita likely just came out of a Kronos package, expected that anyway though. The tzatziki, however, could use some improvement. I wish the dill aromatics would have come out more (if there even was any, that is). But the smooth and cool properties certainly were there. A pretty solid deal for $17 overall. And is guaranteed to fill you up, if anything! Another plus: unlike most places I've been to, there's no need to worry leaving with your shirt smelling like gyros. I would consider Charcoal Flame a great introduction for those who have never tried a non-American gyro before. But it also appears to be filled with locals who know good food! We came here on a double date with close friends. I picked the place based on yelp reviews, looking forward to trying the "authentic greek gyros" made from pork. I've been to Greece and let me tell you this was nothing like the flavorful gyros I've gotten on the streets of Athens, Santorini and Mykonos. Of course maybe if I had looked for the cheapest and dirtiest places in Greece, I might have found gyros like this; fatty, chopped into tiny little cubes, and crispy like pork cracklins filled with marshmallow. Blecch, I expect to have diarrhea tonight. I'm now embarrassed because I convinced my buddy to come, promising one of the cheapest and best Greek restaurants on the North Shore. And this guy, a pescatarian with a worldly heritage, knows the best Mediterranean places and vegetable dishes to get across Chicago. We passed over his recommendations to try "a great undiscovered place.". He ended up getting a tuna melt because he couldn't find anything else on the menu that was compatible with his diet. And he ended up having the best meal in our group because it came from a can. Besides my "authentic" gyros (aka "Superfund gyros [https://ballotpedia.org/Superfund_sites_in_the_United_States]) which came with a single pita and stingy amount of tomato, others had Greek Salad with American gyro meat and roasted chicken kabobs. The former had a single pepperoncini, sparse feta, and a couple of olives, although the American gyro meat was tasty and I stole some off my date's plate so I had something to enjoy. The kabobs were "okay" per my friend's date's report. Unsweetened iced tea from the fountain was flavorless but the tap water was okay. Ice and styrofoam was complimentary. The dining room was worn and dingy, floor was dirty, and men's room was a toxic waste site with a "yellow tide" bacterial bloom in the toilet and urinal. They should use the ammonia vapor from the restrooms to clean the floors. Finally, I will recognize the reasonable counter service and competitive prices. read more

I absolutely love the Greek food in here. I decided to have lunch on this place. It is not my first time because I already visited this place last year. Their chicken is so tender, well-cooked and it is so good. Also, the place did not change, it is still the same clean, and cozy place and the staffs are still nice and friendly. not so busy at dinner time. came back to try and taste the difference between Greek gyros which is pork base and I didn't know that's how they do it in Greece and the American or us gyros which is lamb and beef. I have a buddy who's Greek and he tells this is one of his go to spots for gyros. I ordered to go from the counter and the service was nice but I did think it took a bit long for it not being too busy. I ordered a Greek gyro platter and a kefta sandwich, both were good but I did think the sandwich was overpriced for just a small sandwich alone($10). I'd definitely go back for that Greek gyro platter though, which is a homemade pork spit. I also loved their tzatziki sauce. The inside has an old school Chicago Wendy's feel and it's a plus they got some espn on for me. Not a bad spot for some Greek style foods. read more

To start, the patty melt and the Greek salads with chicken were really good. The gyros was the worst 2 people said. They said the meat was not in strips but in cut pieces. They felt it was probably left overs from the day before. Both were feeling bad after the meal and were sick later in the day. Came here for the "authentic" Greek Pork souvlaki gyro based upon recommendations. It was not that good. It is pre-made in house, but tastes nothing like a fresh pork souvlaki gyro served on almost any street corner in Greece. The meat is re-heated so it isn't very tender. There just aren't very many places serving up an authentic gyro. The tzatziki was ok. But if you order the sandwich and look forward to having French fries inside you are out of luck. You have to pay $5 for entire order of fries. That bumps the total to nearly twenty bucks. A gyro and fries should be eight bucks tops. This place serves up below par food. read more

We love to take out food but we also love to enjoy great ambience here. Home cooked meals, potatoes are always perfect meat is juicy and prices are good.
