My go-to seafood shop. I'm always greeted when I walk in the door, the staff are very knowledgeable about where their products are sourced, great at giving advice on how to prepare various selections of their very fresh fish/shellfish. They have a nice selection of unique cheeses as well which they are happy to let you taste or recommend based on your preferences. I also like their little dry goods section and wines. I feel very lucky to have this quality seafood shop close by. read more

I love Newman's Fish Co. I've been eating here since I was knee high to a grasshopper. My dad and I would always go there when I was hanging out at his office after school. We'd get the halibut or cod fish and chips with cole slaw. I never felt like I had enough fried fish in my life even at the age of 7. I could tuck away some food even at that age I tell ya...who am I kidding, I still can! The fish is perfectly fried so that your getting more fish than you are fried stuff. I hate going to places where they hand you mostly batter with a little fish inside of it. Newman's knows what works and they've stuck with it and have been successful for years. I feel awkward saying that that's really all I've ever eaten there...I don't think I've ever tried anything else. I mean I've gone inside to the market side and purchased whole crab and salmon before. But I've never eaten anything else on the menu besides fish and chips....huh. Fish and chips: Always amazing! They have cod, halibut, salmon, and sometimes they'll have oysters for the special. Totally worth a quick stop at the outside counter for lunch. Love when places live up to the yelp hype! Its pretty cheap and everything I had was fresh and left me wanting more even though I was stuffed. Salmon was 3 huge pieces for $7 and change panko breaded and just amazing. Stopped here on the way moving to Portland so maybe I've never had super fresh salmon - I've never seen it this perfect pink before and it was so moist and rich. I tried it with tartar sauce because cocktail sauce didn't sound right. I'm now a convert - love it! Well Newman's tartar sauce anyway. Fries/chips were also amazing and cheap. I don't like in and outs fresh cut fries but loved these. I was super full but ended up snacking on fries the rest of the drive. Clam chowder was perfectly seasoned, no salt or pepper needed. Full of seriously huge chunks of clams and a few red potatoes. I liked the firmness of reds, but think using softer potatoes adds to the soup. But whatever it was still delish. I usually just pick out the clams and toss the soup, but this was so good it was worth the heavy cream. read more

I have eaten fish and chips at 100's of restaurants and none compare to here. Freshness and quality are incomparable. The batter they use does not hold a bunch of grease and has perfect texture and flavor. Most places use white fish or frozen fish. I had fresh rock cod and halibut to choose from here. Fish and chips like no other. If I crave it nothing else will do! Willamette or the Grotto on Coburg super consistent quality of cod and cooked to perfection. Both locations offer same items with a few grilled items at the grotto worth trying. One thing that deserves mention here is the fries yes the fries! Potatoes right? No, all fries are not created equal. Some swear that a true fresh cut twice fried fries is the best and done correctly I would agree most of the time. These are a frozen skin on natural fry that is damn good cooked in what I guess is rice bran oil (clean taste). Salads are unspectacular but good value. Fresh fish market is much better at the Willamete store and they have some other wonderful cheese and dry specialties. read more

I have been here multiple times and I did have to test the waters through the variety of types of fish and chips offered. I started my first visit with the salmon option. To me that option wasn't the greatest. I like salmon but it just tasted different and unappetizing. Second time was the halibut... It is a bit on the splurging side at $11.50, but it was really good as it should be for the price. Since the third time I tried the cod and for me this tastes the best and can't beat the price at $6.50. This place makes me excited about fish and chips. I seriously love fish, but I don't always want it fried. Well, not unless it's Newman's making it. On days when I'm nearby, this is among the best choices for food in the area, especially if I'm in the mood for fish. Always fresh, properly cooked, well-seasoned and with some great daily specials, I can always find something to suit my mood. The fries are always great too, but I frequently will switch them out for some really good cole slaw instead.
