The food quality seems somewhat fresh but when I ordered the mac & cheese, it came out with highly processed, cold shredded cheddar sprinkled on top. Very reminiscent of frozen grocery store dinner. Portion sizes are small (actually, probably an appropriate size meal) but above average pricing does not seem the right fit for average quality meals. Overwhelmed with the scrumptious food options, I asked for a recommendation--I selected the Mediterranean pizza and it did not disappoint. Yummy! I was really excited to try this place as it's always packed during lunch hour (and it has 4 stars...still scratching my head), so I thought it must be tasty! My first visit I ordered a salad to-go. As I waited for my salad I enjoyed an incredible smell of warm bread and garlic - this was an awesome first impression. I also noticed the free crouton sticks and pickle and topping station which was pretty exciting too. However, this was the extent of the good impression. I got back to my office and realized they sent me with blue cheese dressing instead of the balsamic that I'd asked to have as a substitute. This is such a pet peeve of mine, but ultimately, I get it- busy lunch day so I guess I'll let it slide. Unfortunately, the steak on the salad just wasn't tasty at all - rubbery and didn't taste fresh. I also felt like there was a ton of lettuce and very few toppings proportionately. Needless to say, I wanted to give them another try when I was ready to splurge on a sandwich and some less healthy options, so we returned a few weeks later to dine in. My two coworkers ordered salads and I ordered a sandwich, side Caesar salad and we split an order of mac n cheese. I never thought I would say mac n cheese didn't taste good (I mean, I'm super happy with good 'ol Kraft), but this was so bland and flavorless. We each had one bite and that was the extent of it. The Caesar salad had a very odd taste to it. I want to say it tasted heavy on the mayo? Something was off because it was not enjoyable either. Again, I took one bite. I don't like warm meat on my sandwiches and I didn't ask if they toast them, so it's my fault, but the turkey sandwich was just not my cup of tea at all. We stopped in for a quick dinner on A Sunday night and they weren't too busy. The girl at he order station was friendly, but wasn't too familiar with the menu which was a bummer because I ended up not trying something because she didn't know the answer to my question. I couldn't help but notice she didn't know the answer to someone else who ordered after us. I ordered the southern salad with sherry vinaigrette and my husband ordered the chicken salad sandwich with a side of lobster and crab bisque. My salad was good - the only downside was the burnt croutons that had a bit of a weird aftertaste. My husband said he enjoyed his sandwich and soup (I did too!). I had a hankering for chicken salad one day so I did a google search and found this place nearby. Their chicken salad is fabulous!! It's served on a warm wheat bun and comes with your choice of side item. Everything is prepared fresh daily and you can really tell in the taste and quality of the food. The manager told me they start prepping food about 5:30 a.m.! They have a selection of 4 different soups to choose from daily. The corn & crab chowder soup is excellent!!! I've also tried one of their pizzas which is more than enough for one person and they have about 8 different selections to choose from. If you order a large drink, save your cup and bring it back the next time and save $2.00 off the cost of your drink. They have great salads and desserts, too and play good music. Nice atmosphere. I love this place! The food is great, but what impressed me most is the service! The nearby hospital holds a mommy mixer every Friday and a number of us have lunch afterwards at Newks. The manager noticed us after our second visit and talked to us for a bit. After learning that we planned to have lunch there every week, he offered to reserve tables just for us! At this oddly named eatery you place your order at the counter and are given a number to take to the table and wait to have your order delivered to you. For those who enjoy soup, Newk's has a 7 day of the week menu with the selections changing daily. I think that's a cool concept. I noticed because I do enjoy soup, especially cream based. My daughter ordered a sandwich and loaded potato soup and she enjoyed her meal the most. My niece and my sister both ordered BBQ chicken pizza. My niece finished hers because she was really hungry but she said the chicken on the pizza was really dry. My sister sent her pizza back because her crust was very wet and soggy in the center. When the pizza was delivered back to the table we were all stunned into silence. I'm not kidding. Conversation stopped when he put the pizza back in front of my sister with the crust burned black. Visibly black. We were speechless. When the server noticed our facial expressions he offered to make another pizza but my sister was hungry and tired of waiting for food while we were eating so she kept it. She had them bring out a cup of olive oil to try to render aid to her BBQ pizza. My other niece ordered a slice of strawberry cake and it's a very generous size. She said that it was pretty good. I ordered a cup of Newk's signature chili and a side of fruit. First about that fruit cup, it was so small I laughed. That little cup was baby size. The teeny tiny little bowl was about the size of a yogurt container. Now about my chili. Newk's signature ingredient is clearly beans. I was disappointed because I like chili that is really beefy. It had a bit of a spicy kick to it, not much though. I definitely would not order it again. What I enjoyed most was my cup of sweet tea. Sad, huh. Drinks come in one size. First time to Newk's and my experience was less than pleasant. Cashier wasn't very friendly, which was a bummer as I needed some help navigating the menu. The upside was my order came out correct. Before we continue there let's back up to being handed my cup. Walked over to the drink station and it was disgusting. The unsweetened tea was overflowing onto the counter, wrappers were literally floating from one side of the drink bar to the other and napkins and lids were just laying out not in their intended spot. A disgusting liquid of what I hope was just tea and whatever was spilled was coving nearly ever inch of the counter. Now I had my drink I made my way around the seating area to at least a dozen or more tables that needed to be bussed and cleaned. After finding the least filthy table I sat and waited for my food. While sitting I watched a handful of other folks experience the same service and surprise when arriving at the beverage counter. Needless to say, everyone was getting creative on how to deal with the table situation. Finally my food arrived in a fairly quick manner which I appreciated. My sandwich was okay. The bread was warm and the cheese was melted. The only thing that kept it from being a great sandwich was the excessive amount of mayonnaise and mustard. I ordered a cup of soup (chicken tortilla) and it came out slightly warmer than room temperature. I had to send it back to only receive a second bowl of lukewarm soup. I would caution anyone thinking about eating at Newk's. Objectively, I will give Newk's another try and see if this experience was unique, but I'm not leaving all that happy today. $15 wasted on an okay sandwich and terrible soup. Came to Newk's with a group of coworkers and I was impressed. It is the type of place that if you don't live around it, you wish you had in your own neighborhood. Lots of fresh selections of soups, salads, sandwiches, and pizzas. I am always a bit nervous to order a Shrimp Po-Boy from a non-cajun place, but thy did it justice, and they used shrimp that were not fried...amazing! My 5 Cheese Mac-N-Cheese was ok, but a lot more bland than I anticipated and I am not sure was worth the extra I paid to make it my side. I should have stuck with some of the sides that came with the sandwich without an up-charge and I would have been a bit happier. The portions were generous and everyone's food looked great.
