I'm very disappointed with Newk's. I went there for lunch today with my husband thinking that I could order a simple sandwich at a deli the way I wanted it made. To my surprise (now empty stomach, time wasted) I could not. I wanted the turkey avocado sandwich on wheat berry bread instead of the French roll it is served on. What I was told by cashier is that I could not substitute. I quickly stepped away from the counter and went to my husband hoping to leave immediately. However he had already order a cup of soup and salad to go. While I stood there waiting with my husband, the cashier came over to tell me he could give me a pre-made cold turkey sandwich and some sliced avocado that I could add to the untoasted sandwich. I am not mad with his effort but I did not drive over to a deli to get a cold sandwich and fix it myself. I cold have made that at home. I don't understand how it is that a deli that prepares sandwiches, pizzas and salads in the kitchen while you wait can not substitute one type of bread for another. If that is not a option then it should be posted on the front door and also on the website which is how I decided to order that sandwich. So disappointed and so very hungry. I know I'll never recommend this place to any of my friends that are eating healthy as it does not cater to those needs and is limited to what a deli should be able to do. read more

I grew up in Shreveport, Louisiana and they got a Newk's there about 4-5yrs ago. It's STILL super packed. Why? Because te food is fresh. It's very tasty! Try the BarBQ pizza, hands down - awesome. I've been to this Plano location a half dozen times because it's an alternative to other fast food places, however each experience varied. It's a walk up and order, get a number, your own drinks and seat yourself kind of place. And that's fine. The food comes out quite quickly too. That's also a good thing. The problem with this place is with the quality of the food. The pizzas are either really good or really bad. The salads contain crisp greens and sometimes wilted long dead weed-like leaves. (We sat in a booth on one occasion where I watched a food prep person carrying a big bowl of greens with one hand while he dug in a trash receptacle with the other. That put me off for the rest of the meal. I wrote to management but they never responded so I decided to include that incident here.) I only tried one sandwich and it was so dry I never wanted or had another. Same goes for the over-priced cold piece of cake ordered. In summary, I like the concept of the restaurant but it appears to lack experienced management, consistently fresh ingredients and talent in the kitchen. read more

Tried this place and I was blown away by how amazing the food was. The cashier was super friendly and recommended the strawberry cake. I got the farmer's market sandwich, broccoli cheese soup, and strawberry cake. The Sandwich had the most perfect caramelized onions and earthy mushrooms. The broccoli cheese had fresh grated cheddar on top. And to top it off, I had the best strawberry cake ever. Perfect fresh strawberries. The portions are huge here! Priced very similar to other sandwich/soup/salad restaurants, I found that Newk's was the place to go for great food, fast service, and where one goes to get the most bang for their buck. Came here for lunch on 8/4/15 with a friend. Service was HORRIBLE. People were waiting 45 minutes for a sandwich! I ordered margherita pizza and my friend ordered a ham and cheese sandwich. My pizza came out very quickly. 35 minutes later, my friend was still waiting for her sandwich! She had to go to the counter TWICE to get some help. Your kitchen area looks severely understaffed. This is the first instance where I feel like yelp has lied to me. While most of the reviews for this place have higher ratings, my experience wasn't anywhere close. The service: the employees were nice, but standard eat-in workers. They didn't go out of their way to explain the menu, or ask how we were doing, but they weren't rude, so that gets a star. The decor: I actually like the way this place is decorated. Additional star. The food: this is where I was severely underwhelmed. The food subtracts from the previous stars listed. I ordered a steak sandwich with a side of the four cheese Mac. The sandwich seriously lacked flavor, and it was comparable to eating a cardboard box for dinner. The steak was overly chewy, and the bread was hard and seemed stale. The Mac and cheese was over cooked (noodles) and mushy/soggy. Also lacking flavor. I'm being honest when I say that I've had easy mac that's beat this stuff in the flavor department. Not sure what the hype is about. My husband had shrimp po'boy with a side Caesar. He was also underwhelmed. He said the salad was okay, but your standard Caesar, nothing special. He was pretty excited about the shrimp po'boy, but after a few bites, said he wasn't impressed. At $30 for two meals with two drinks, this place is overpriced for the quality of food you get. Both husband and I agreed that we would have been better off getting a foot long at subway next door, or heading across the street to eatzi's for the money we spent. We won't be back. Maybe this place was having and "off day", but regardless I left without being satisfied. In addition (and maybe this is TMI), a few hours after eating here, I felt like total crap. Left with the impression that Newk's is just a crummy rip off of Cafe Express but with fewer menu items and lower quality. Here were our issues: 1. If you're gluten sensitive, forget about it. The only thing the manager said they had in this department are some crummy salads. The one my wife ordered came out and was just a big bowl of wilted lettuce. None of the soups were gluten free either. 2. The lady behind the register that took the order was very unfriendly. She refused to show us the a listing of allergy-sensitive menu items (no clue why), and then wanted to charge us for a kids cup of water. 3. The food did come out quickly after we placed our order. 4. The pizza we ordered somehow tasted undercooked and overly greasy at the same time. "A-OK" is a good description of our experience and I would give this place 3.5 stars if I could. The food was fine but nothing remarkable. The steak sandwich tasted more like a roast cut of meat than a petite sirloin grilled steak, and the horseradish sauce was barely present. Overall, just not a ton of flavor happening. DH had the Italian sandwich which he thought was also good but the pickled spread on it was very salty. We both ordered a side of fresh fruit which was very small (noticeably smaller than Jason's Deli), and many pieces in both of ours had brown spots or were not ripe enough yet so they were hard. Ehh. The ordering process was quick and simply. Service was friendly and pleasant but a little slow today as they were pretty crowded. This place was jam-packed with loud kiddos at lunch time today (which I get there is nothing they can do about, but this may not be a great place for a quiet lunch on the weekends, in case that's what you're looking for). I noticed quite a bit of food on the floor, a very messy soda fountain area, etc. I'm not sure if they were short-staffed today or just overwhelmed at the time, but it's just something that impacted my overall impression and seemed worth mentioning. I think prices here are very fair for what you get. We would definitely be willing to check this place out again, maybe at an off-peak time to avoid the crowds and the noise. Ate here recently with my family. I had the Pesto grilled chicken sandwich and for my side I substituted Caesar salad for additional $2.50. The side salad portion was good and worth extra $ but was drowned in dressing so next time I'll ask for the dressing on the side. The kids had pizza and it came out piping hot so we had to hoard it until it cooled enough for them to eat. They have a nice range of side selections- chips, cole slaw, fruit cup, or if you don't like any of those you can substitute a side salad for an additional $2.50. A nice feature: the drink cups are plastic and are take-home keepers. There is a little bar of pickles, cheese, jalapeños and croutons to add to your sandwich/salad/pizza. Not your every day sandwich shop - love it! We ordered to-go from a super sweet and efficient girl at the counter, then waited only 10 minutes or so for our sandwiches. Shrimp po' boy and pesto chicken were both served on extremely soft and warm bread. None of that crunchy mess that hurts the roof of your mouth when you bite into it. The pesto chicken comes with red and yellow bell peppers AND goat cheese, so naturally I had to get that. Funny thing, my boyfriend doesn't care for cocktail sauce, so I took his and added it to my sammie (I like spice). The cocktail sauce was a nice surprise. You can tell they make their own and there was loads of horseradish (the perfect amount if you ask me). We catered here for a real estate meeting and I thought it was really good - very fresh food and the prices weren't too bad - comparable to a Corner Bakery/Paradise Cafe, but I would say tastier food. I got the shrimp and avocado salad and then we got a ton of rice crispy bars and brownies. The shrimp and avo salad was on a bed of arugula and it was very yummy! They weren't stingy on the shrimp, either, which was nice. The rice crispy bars and brownies were pretty plain jane - giant portions but tasted pretty dry - especially the brownie....it was more like a dry cake bar. The meeting ran 5 hours so I ended up eating the whole darn thing but would've enjoyed more of a fudgy brownie. read more

I love love loveeeeee NEWK'S!!!! It was one of my favorite sandwich places to go back home in Florida and I'm so glad there's one kind of close to where I live. Wish they had more branches! My favorite is the Italian. The perfect combo of flavors and the right amount of meat. Their bread is always on point too. Not too hard or soft. Loaded potato soup is another fave! Always check their soup schedules because they vary every day. Condiment bar has everything ya need and their desserts doesn't disappoint either! Nice looking and well run restaurant. Food is not great but not bad. However if you want to go to a deli type restaurant I'm not sure you wouldn't rather visit Cafe Express or Jason's Deli, both long proven winners and relatively close by. I do hope it survives although the original area Newk's on Preston and Frankfort only lasted a short time before closing due to slow business. And with Eatsi's opening soon across the street it may be a real test to keep the doors open. Unfortunately being "just OK" may not cut it in this competitive neighborhood. read more

I had this place catered to our work, and it was surprisingly good! The order was completed pretty quickly during lunch hours. And the service was very professional when I arrived to pick up the order. I had the roast beef with a side of Mac and cheese. Everything was solid - especially for it being catered. I usually expect catered foods to lose quantity for the sake of convenience, but this place was consistent on both ends. I'd put this place on par with McCallisters Deli in terms of atmosphere. A good friend of mine works near the tollway and Parker. We were tired of the usual lunch spots, and he suggested Newk's. He'd been there before with his wife and two young boys. Friendly cashiers Big selection (from healthy to naughty) Great prices LOTS of condiments (fresh parm, olives, peppers, candied pickles, bread sticks...) I ordered the pesto chicken 10" pizza, and my buddy got "The Q" signature barbecue sandwich. Our food came to us shockingly quick (under 10 minutes) and hot. We both loved our food. So I stopped in on my lunch today to try Newk's for the first time. I'm not a particularly picky person, nor am I demanding. Newk's was very middle of the road mediocre. I ordered Newk's favorite salad. Chicken, cranberries, Gorgonzola... A pretty delicious mix overall. It's about eight dollars, which isn't world ending for a salad. My wait at the restaurant was no more than five minutes, which is always a plus. However, the guy who took my order refused to talk to me. I don't think it's too much for someone to tell you how much your change is instead of looking anywhere but at you. The guy who brought out my order was actually worse! When I thanked him for my food, he looked at me like I had two heads and said "yeah, whatever." Sorry you hate your job, but please don't take it out on me. The salad was actually good, so it keeps points for that. The chicken was thin and the grapes were delicious, and I loved the dressing. Thank goodness it was on the side, because there was TOO MUCH, So overall, not bad. I would eat the food again, but I'm definitely sending someone else to get it. read more

Skip a Panera, there was a time in my life before Newks and I don't want to return to that time. Newks is what the quintessential cafe should aspire to- lots of options, easy to navigate menu, easy ordering and casual. I've now been to newks 5 times and have yet to be disappointed. Their salads are generous portion sizes, their sandwiches are delicious and their soups(which change daily) are amazing. I haven't tried their mini personal thin crust pizzas but they look and smell heavenly. You go in, see the menu board, order at a register, and you pass by a station where you grab your condiments, fill your drinks, etc. and they bring your food out to you when it's ready. Usually the whole process is less than 5 mins but can be a little longer at busy lunch hours. My favorite is the chicken Caesar and chicken tortilla soup, but I'd definitely recommend giving it a try if you've never been. My only con is that it can be a little pricier for some menu items, but I do feel quality here is high enough to justify me making several return trips. read more

I was recommended to Newk's by a friend who lives in another state that has this eatery nearby. I was excited to finally get to try it for myself. There's something for everybody here. Pizza, soup, sandwiches, salads. I prefer casual dining places to sit-down restaurants anyway, and this place does not disappoint. This pizzas are fabulous with real cheese and a great crust. You can customize almost anything on the menu. The drinks are huge - you get a full 32 oz when you order a soda or tea. This is definitely a fresh take on the boring sandwich chains around. I get really bored of Subway, etc all the time. I just wish there were more locations in the area, as I'm not in Plano that often anymore. read more

This place is ok. I actually really liked the food. We ordered the spicy shrimp pizza (which was awesome) and the pesto chicken sandwich. I have a favorite place in Dallas where I usually get a pesto chicken sandwich and this one was equally as good. The service is also great. The only reason I took off two stars is because the cups for water are ridiculously small. I had to get a refill immediately after I sat down. I will be back though to try the salads.
