I came here with a party of three during Saturday dinner. Before we even reached the restaurant, I could see a large crowd outside waiting for their number to be called, and the inside was packed. For waiting in line, we got a physical number card from the front desk coordinator, who wrote down our number and how many people in our party. We had a wait of about 30 minutes. The inside atmosphere was nice, and there were a lot of filled tables and booths. The standard typical chinese buffet food. An assortment of Americanized Chinese Food, some Chinese dim sum options, multiple seafood options, meat/Mongolian BBQ/BBQ rips, sushi/sashimi, salad/fruit, and an ice cream machine. The staff are courteous. They're pretty busy, with multiple tables they have to bus, will swing by to bus any plates on a regular basis. Also you can take away the bones (ask for a to-go box - they'll give you a clear one). I think the waitress said there was one other type of food scraps you can take away (obviously not main food that you are suppose to eat at the table) For a little under $30 a person, it's not too bad if you selectively pick what you want from the buffet and you know what you're gonna get. Pretty clean & somewhat well-maintained food areas. One employee was standing around when he could've cleaned the counters on some of said food counters. I specifically came for sushi so I went there first for my 1st plate. I was going to get other meats for my second plate but I could tell it was maybe cold to luekwarm looking at the tray. To be fair and realisitic though, if the food is going to sit there until almost gone, it is going to get lower in temp eventually. I just prefer the my food served fresh when they bring out a new tray / refill them. Anyways, I had 2 plates of sushi / Sashimi then for my 3rd plate, I got class and mussels. So, I am not going to bother reading the other reviews, and just state of my experience. If you have a high standard for Chinese buffets, and come here, I don't know how.....well, to each their own. The best legs there are to be (sorry, the excitement of fairly fresh all you can eat crab legs on an empty stomach still provides me some excitement). The crab legs were good and plentiful. The other options were the Chinese buffet staples, i.e. orange chicken, broccoli beef, random desserts, sushi, fruit, and other staples. The typical "standards" actually tasted pretty fresh.....hot and not dry. So, A+ for food not being stale. Perhaps the high customer volume requires fresh food to constantly be put out, but that is definitely not a hindrance. As mentioned, it was very crowded, but I think it was obvious to see why. I may be biased because I had a small breakfast at about 8:00 am and needed sustenance immediately (so perhaps my tastebuds were a it skewed), but I walked full, and quite content with the $30+ price tag (well, I mean, I had to get a soda, too). This place has some of the worst customer service I've ever experienced. I went with my family to celebrate my graduation on a Saturday and was told there would be a 40-minute wait. After waiting patiently, they completely skipped over us. When we asked what happened, they claimed they had called our names--but we were standing just outside the door the entire time because the inside was packed and had no available seating. They kept saying our table was "almost ready," and had us wait another 20 minutes constantly brushing us off. When we finally voiced our frustration, the staff were rude and condescending. There's plenty of options, from the traditional American and Chinese-American choices to even having fresh sashimi and more traditional Chinese dishes like chicken feet. I have been coming to Newark Buffet for over 25 years when a full dinner only cost 13$ and the quality of food was actually quiet good, and I am saying this with a liftime of Chinese food cooking. So I went to this restaurant for a friend's birthday celebration. The proce went up to 32$ per person which is not cheap. As usual, this place has been a local favorite and there were many birthday parties, but it wasn't completely packed like it was few years ago. THe house was half full at 5:50. Let me just say, I will not come back again because the quality was noticibly going down. First off, the not and sour soup waster watery and the basic ingredients ( black fungus, blakc bushroom and egg drops ) were missing. The Miso soup was also watery with minimum seaweed and almost no tofu. Very disappointing! The desert soup, Tapioca with taro was also watery (supposed to be thickened with coconut cream and cornstarch). The Broccoli beef was terrible, Broccoli was hard and undercooked, the beef tasted like it was tenderized for hours, but the worst part was, the sauce was not mixed with the veggie. The sauted muzzles were tough and lukewarm. The baked salmon was barely warm. Overall, it was a terrible buffet dinner and for 32$, honestly in retrospect, TOMI is a better option with more variety. Newark BUffet has been upping the price steadily every year for the past 10. It was acceptable when the food was still decent. Not anymore! The problem is, they still have good business because majority of their customers are pacific islanders and non-Aisans who can't tell the difference. Quality/Quantity - Decent size buffet. In order of my favorite foods with feedback: Fried chicken drumsticks or wings - Freshly deep fried, good flavor, good size pieces. Salmon Sushi - When available, good and fresh. Had a good rice to salmon ratio. The negative is that if you are NOT at that section right away, it runs out too quickly. Rest of the sushi was just okay, I only tried a few other ones as I did not want to fill up on rice. Huge steamed oysters - Another item that runs out quickly; so get it when it is available. And if you do it will be fresh, as it will not last. Pork chops - Good flavors, nice bite size pieces, minimum bone. Noodles - Their version of chow mein. It was okay; I only tried a sample as I did not want to carb up. Shrimp cocktail - An item that you can not do wrong, a little lemon juice and some cocktail sauce. Of course they could have been of a larger size of shrimp. Jello & ice cream was good - But if you can't do that right... The tilapia fish sushi looked good, but the salmon was so much better. Black bean sauce clams - Small clams and not enough bean sauce. Deep fried crab claws - Misleading, looked great, but this was more of a deep fried fish ball. The fry was good, but if you are expecting crab, you will probably be disappointed. Steamed buns also ran out quickly and did not get refilled the entire 1.5 hours I was here. They also had the following that I did not try, as I just can not eat as much as I used to: Grill station, soups, steam buns (because they never refilled once), fruit, egg tart, plantain bananas, etc. Most foods look better than they tasted. They advertise rotating 200 items daily, based on season, etc. Atmosphere - Medium size location. Semi private room. Plenty of mall parking, but today (on a Saturday), it was a very busy day. Party trays available. To-go available, see the website for prices. Open 7 days a week from 11am to 9pm; Sundays from 11am to 3pm. Service - Better than expected. The food was pretty good, it was crowded for lunch. Tons of options, so you can try everything. What I observed was gross. People were using the tongs from one dish to go down a lane and grab whatever they wanted, with the same tongs. Too lazy to use the tongs provided for each item? This is inconsiderate for those that have food allergies and intolerances. Besides that, I watched soup bowls being refilled, with ungloved hands. The hands went INTO the clean bowls. That is so disgusting, where have your hands been??? We have vegetarians in our party, who request the sushi chef to make avocado rolls. He always pretends he doesn't understand, or ignores us. All of the sushi items contain some sort of fish. It's rude. His latest response was, "No time, too busy!" Worst thing ever was after eating lunch, I was met with the worst, sharp stomach pains, similar to labor pains. I was up all night, into the morning vomiting until there was nothing left. I was sweaty, hot, then freezing because of all of the sweat. I was nauseated. It isn't worth it. I immediately came to look at the reviews and noticed several others posted experiences related to food poisoning as well. The health department needs to investigate and regulate this establishment. Lastly, the owner is so dismissive about issues. It's like they know they're one of the only buffets in the area. They don't care, they just want your money. Get them in and get them out. I played football at Mount Eden high school, we had a very large Samoan presence on that team and in my neighborhood. I spent a lot of time with them. And one of the things they told me is while we were at the Buffet. " if you see a lot of Samoans that means it's a good Buffet" Well, this theory proved correct tonight. This was my first time at the Newark buffet. How it was my first time I have no clue. Everything was fresh, hot, everything I tried tasted great. The staff was nice and kept our drinks full at all times. The place is very clean and reminds me of a buffet that you would find in a casino. it is pricey, but definitely worth it. Went here for the first and last time yesterday due to many reasons, but first the food either didn't have much good taste to it or was cold when it should have been hot and we got there right at noon, so you'd think everything would have been piping hot for the lunch crowd. The only thing I had that I liked the taste of was the jellos. The worst part was after we we're done and waiting for the credit card to come back I could feel my stomach wasn't happy and as soon as we got home, but sadly before I made it to the toilet the bad food wanted out of my body right then, so won't ever be coming back for sure, but the woman who served our table was excellent and on her job, but sadly quality, temperate and flavor of the foods was not. read more
