I came here last Sunday (a week and a day ago) and had a great experience. The espresso drinks are priced very reasonably, UNLIKE many other places in the area. The staff was very understanding and helpful as I can be a bit difficult / *high maintenance* in terms of my drink and sandwich specifications! Both were delicious. The only downside would be all the graffiti in the restrooms, but I'm sure some folks find that charming. If you want to go somewhere more sterile, there are plenty of overpriced places in the area to choose from. read more

Logan Square has needed a neighborhood coffee shop for some time now--and I'm not disappointed. It seems like they have every major factor set up for success: 1.Lots and lots of seating space 2. AFFORDABLE food ($5 sandwich?!) 3.Options for the vegan schmegans :) 4. Free Wi-fi--I don't even have a lap top but this seems to be a very big attraction here 5. Nice little reading events Things I'm not so excited about is that sometimes the laid back atmosphere allows for people to just sit for hours and hours, which don't get me wrong, is generally a good thing. HOWEVER, when there is literally no place to sit because there is a reading taking up half the cafe and everyone else is camping in front of their Macbooks and I have to get my coffee to go instead of people watching and reading a chapter or two, then yeah it gets a little out of control. I know, I know, suck it up. Also, some reviewer said she felt very 'unhip' here. What?! GET OVER IT, wear your uggs with pride and sit next to the probable lit major with greasy hair and the Old man fumbling with his newspaper for the 100th time. Yeah, there might be a certain crowd here, but there is plenty of room for everyone :) All in all I'm happy New Wave opened in my 'hood. read more

Was nervous about coming here after reading the reviews, but I was pleasantly surprised! $3.29 for a large iced coffee but it lasted me 2+ hours and I was able to get lots of studying done (despite popular belief) plus the music rocked and wasn't offensively loud or distracting. The crowd was enjoyably eclectic for a "people watcher" like myself. Everyone from hipsters (me?), to business men, to babies. Also, I really dug the local art work they display. The only reason it did not get 5 stars is because I was shivering due to the blasting air conditioning (but hey, it's the summer what did I expect) and the chair I was able to get was quite rickety. I'm not a huge girl, but I thought it might collapse under me. Otherwise, I'm definitely making this place a prime hang spot (with a sweater and hopeful arm chair seating) ! read more

This tight jeaned haven is definitely the hot spot for Logan Square and I have been to this place at least six times. I have really tried to love the local Metropolis coffee vendor. I really have. Today was the last straw. I went in looking for a sandwich and an iced coffee. What I got was iced coffee and attitude. It wasn't busy, there were maybe 10 people in the joint, yet the incredibly rude lady behind the counter informed me, " We can't make sandwiches unless there are three people working". Well I'm sorry about how jammed up you are with all these people around IMing on their laptops, but I want a friggin' sammich here! They get one star for Metropolis Coffee, which isn't really for New Wave and one star for location, and one-half star for the men's restroom, the graffiti in there is pretty neat. One-half star for the NES that they have on the big screen, keeping it 8bit. read more

Great location. Decent ambiance. Lots of room to chill out and enjoy the day. Staff could care less if you are there. I didn't feel like they wanted my return business. I've had warmer service at Jiffy Lube. The pastries are less than to be desired. With all the coffee shops popping up in the area, I won't be coming back. read more

Great neighborhood hipster vibe coffee shop in the heart of Logan Square. I've been here a few times and the coffee and tea never fails to impress. They're always featuring a local artist and I was excited on Monday to see them feature PJ Anderson who specializes in cartoon and comic based artwork. Service is quick and friendly - you order at the counter and grab a table after. There's a variety of tables and couches to sit on and the WiFi is dependable. There's also patio seating for warmer days. My only complaints: 1. I realize it's a hipster place and the ripped up vintage leather couches are part of the decor. But they could keep the place a little cleaner. I usually have a layer of dust on my butt when I sit on one of the large chairs or sofas. And the floor is consistently pretty dirty. Nothing bad enough to deter me from coming back again and again, but now that I have a kid I guess I just notice these things more. 2. They only serve drinks in disposable cups. There's something lost in the whole relaxing in a coffee shop atmosphere when you don't get to drink your coffee out of a big ceramic partially chipped mug with character. Or drink your scalding hot tea out of a cup and saucer. Paper cups just kill the hipster coffee vibe, seem wasteful for dining in customers, and are just less fun to drink out of. Please bring back real dishes! read more

I've been going here since it opened. It's great for people-watching. It's quite large, there are plenty of plugs, a variety of seats, and seating areas. They have round tables which kinda suck for working on your laptop. Coffee and food are just OK, nothing special. Better than Starbucks, but that's not saying much. The Chai latte (with or without espresso shots) is among the better I have had in Chicago. One major gripe from me - they don't have enough ceramic mugs. They usually only have "for here" mugs in a small size, and you have to explicitly ask for one. read more

Got to state the facts: In response to someone's review, New Wave doesn't have to produce better croissants and coffee than La Boulangerie because the "no compete contract" was signed when New Wave first signed the lease with the building owner. That was the DEAL. The building owner knew that and La Boulangerie very well knew that when they decided to sign the lease to move into that building. It doesn't make sense to have two burger joints or two ice cream shops or two pharmacies in the same building. So why should there be two businesses selling similar items be in the same building???? Any smart business person would protect their business and it was a very smart move on the New Wave's part to do that from the getgo! That means before there was La Boulangerie even in the picture, there was the contract! Having said that, very Spacious and cool and retro decor... almost reminds me of Pick Me Up cafe's vibe... They serve Metropolis Coffee! Their awesome croissants are from Beans and Bagels!!! Many tables and seatings are scattered all over the cafe. Also, good to know that there are two entrances on both the Milwaukee side as well as Logan Blvd. side. Will definitely come by when I'm in the area next time! read more

A coffee shop for when you are looking for nervous energy. The black and yellow tiles; the fuschia and yellow tiles. The worn-as-hell couches are up for more peeling. Highlighted by silver tables and chairs. The music is always too loud. Ugh. This place induces anxiety, so I have been here several times out of convenience. I haven't experienced anything bad re: the baristas. I liked that my hot chocolate was served with a swirl chocolate duck on top of the whipped cream. I smiled. Sometimes the atmosphere does build up a vague excitement in me, though, and once I left with a new sense of ambition to work on my eventual to-do list. read more

There are three selling points for any coffee shop: locally-roasted coffee, free soy milk and plenty of seating. Any place that has one will leave me with a smile, two will make me a regular and three will have me bringing all my friends. I stumbled into New Wave one afternoon and fell in love with the atmosphere. On that particular visit, the giant room was fairly empty, and I savored the idea of drinking my coffee in a comfy chair by the window. As I glanced over the menu board, I noticed they brew Metropolis Coffee, my favorite local roaster and the smile on my face amplified. But when I noticed the carafes of cream and saw soy milk sitting next to its long lost siblings half & half and non-fat milk, I knew this was love. Not ever trip have I been so fortunate with seating, but I have never been left without a spot for more than a few moments. Their espresso is as fantastic as their brewed coffee and there's free wi-fi. All in all, this is looking to be the start of a beautiful relationship. read more

Imagine a world where 'Friends' had not aired and 'Central Perk' was simply misspelled, now add a couple of people from each socially created demographic (the young family, the older couple, the 'hipsters', the teenagers, the gays, the artists, the sports fans, the tourists and the locals) and put them together under one happy roof with good coffee .... et voilà you get a comfortable, welcoming, friendly and accepting environment where you can sit and chill and just 'be'. Refreshing isn't it? read more

YEAY! A locally run coffee shop with wi-fi. I love the decor and the vibe is fun and non pretentious. Plus you have to love any place that has a working NES console with light gun from 1986. Duck Hunt tourney anybody! The more local business we have in Logan Square the less room there is for developer forced gentrification. I'm sure Loganites don't want their neighborhood being taken over like ol' Bucktown and Wicker Park :( I think NWC could put in more tables and couches. read more

Never treated me wrong. Coffee is good, prices are reasonable and seating is plentiful. A few sissies were complaining about cleanliness, suck it up little sister. As far as the hipsters, I don't have a problem with them. Yea they're confused human beings, but folkin A.... ain't that the majority? If I spent my time complaining about clumps of people all my nut hair would fall out in an afternoon..... and I need that hair to hide my third thumb. So all in all, Jesus is not turning the water into coffee.... but the place has what I need and for that I thank them. read more

New Wave is a solid operation with good coffee and sandwich options, and benefits from a void of coffee locations in the area. Likes: Proximity. It's a 20 minute walk from my house, and a 3 minute train ride. Free wifi. Talented baristas. Large space with usually adequate seating. Relatively friendly service folks (there're a few too cool for school folks there, but most are benignly hipster). Dislikes: The music is usually poopy for doing anything but having a loud conversation, and rarely conducive to work (for those of us who like to work in coffee shops). The color scheme makes me pretty uneasy and the art is really sporadic. New Wave will do for now, but might find itself in trouble if someone wants to appeal to the non-yuppie, non-hipster twenty- and thirty-somethings in the neighborhood. read more

I like the local coffee shop in the Logan Square area called New Wave Coffee. I love the community feel of this shop. It has such a great atmosphere and plenty of seating. Today I had one of their vegan bomb cupcakes. My barista suggested the lemon one and it was delicious!! yuum. I also like that they make pretty designs in my coffee. It made my day! Now I don't know about the parking sitch since I usually walk here, but I did see that there is temporary parking in front (15 min. standing zone). I will be back to visit and can't wait to experience more of New Wave Coffee. read more

I am a fan of this place. Even though it is usually pretty packed, I can find a seat. What I like is that they serve a good collection of non-coffee drinks. The service is decent. I'm not a fan of the music that they play, but then again, I'm probably not the target audience. They sell these really good packaged cookies by a company called I Love Sweets.com. Try the M&M cookie. I was surprised at how good it was. read more

Stopped in at noon with some friends while waiting for a table for brunch at Lula. There was no line, although there were a lot of people enjoying their caffinated beverages throughout the coffeeshop. We were getting our drinks to go, but had we wanted to sit down, there wouldn't have been any open tables. I ordered an iced latte. It was good, but a little bit slow. If I lived in the area, I would definitely be back often. read more

I have always liked this place and have been a patron since 2009-2010 and as cooler places with better coffee have come into Logan Square this place has maintained. It also has a lot of space for those that might actually want to work using a shared table on the Milwaukee side, or a comfy chair on the other side of this two entry point cafe. Overall, it has held true to its original model of a workable open space perfect for meetings (I signed my mortgage here), dates (yep, I had a few of those here too), or coffee and a book (so many times). Stay Golden New Wave Coffee! read more

Needed my daily jolt of caffeine while in Logan Square so I stopped in this coffee shop. Much like the fictional show Cheers everybody here does not know your name but instead stares at you when u walk in . Hipster central. The staff was very friendly & made me my cup of Joe that was not on the menu. I also had a delicious grilled cheese sandwich. No WiFi well, it's under lock & key apparently but I enjoyed my coffee and small lunch. Will most definitely go back when I'm in the area. read more

New Wave Coffee - Coffee & Tea Near Me - Chicago, Illinois

See all

The coffee is usually pretty good (not great, but pretty good, and definitely better than Starbucks). I like the hummus platter, and most of my friends like the sandwiches. The main problem with New Wave is the difficulty in finding a seat. This is a pretty bad coffee shop for studying. It's pretty loud and busy, and nearly impossible to get a seat or a wall plug. New Wave has an energetic vibe, which can be good or bad depending on your mood. They used to have awful wall art -- neon, gaudy, and just generally offensive to my eyes/brain. When I was there two weeks ago, the art had improved. I hope it stays that way. read more

I'm not a huge fan of the 80s, but I am a HUGE fan of non-Starbucks! We stumbled on New Wave a couple weeks ago. It's thankfully walking distance from our apartment and it makes me happy they're there. The hours are good and the food is terrific. I'm not a huge coffee drinker so I cannot speak to some other concerns about coffee quality, but I have to say they make a delicious chai. I wish there were more couches and more mood lighting à la Filter (RIP) but I know they'll be making changes. It's a great place for now and I cannot wait to get back there! read more

Corner coffee shops are the bees knees. Nothing is expected at this place except your feet to get to the counter and a butt to be sitting on a nice relaxing couch. The floor is a checker board with vast amounts of color thrown everywhere which is without a doubt pretty cool. As usual, baristas are fashioning the best logan square biker gear money can buy and music that will either rock your soul or be just annoying. You didn't come to the coffee shop though to listen to music! Environment is a chill welcoming place with a lot of promotions for local shows, festivals, and basically everything that you don't see on the web. Great for killing time. If I were a betting man, this may legitimately be a great location for some late night shows. Also, a couple really cute ladies are are always stirring about. Love to get a number or two or three! So if you want some good coffee, a nice platform desk to write your next novel on, or some friendly chatter, I suggest you look into going here if you are around the square. Just remember to bring your headphones just in case. read more

We all had that friend in high school who spent more time chilling in his cool-ass finished basement than going to class. New Wave is that guy's cool-ass basement with an espresso machine stuffed inside, goofy music and seriously abused couches included. Pass the beat-down Boggle set over, it's time to get my word on while my homey writes her epic-ass screen play. read more

This will have to serve as a temporary review, because I wasn't able to spend much time in here due to the whole popular place = no tables problem. I plan to go back at a less busy time so I can relax and take in the place. Very cool coffee shop, and VERY big! Hipsters abound, for sure. They had lots of yummy coffee, tea, and food options, INCLUDING vegan treats which always wins big points from me. The baristas were chipper and funny, it was nice and cool with the AC, and they offer free WIFI. They even had an old school Nintendo box, some couches strewn about, and some real desks to sit at. Very unique and Filter-esque. (for those of you that know the old Wicker Park spot). read more

*EDIT* After coming here yet again I finally decided to order the 9 to 5, and let me tell you...it was the best choice I've made all day. Delicious x's 10! And the girls behind the counter- while super swamped with work, were still awesomely nice. Certainly recommending to my friends. Awesome cappuccino! It's so difficult to find quality coffee in this city for some reason. So look no further, as you have stumbled upon the best. Cute space, sweet art, and delicious coffee. What more could you want? read more

Found another true espresso gem in Chicago! They sure know how to make drinks here. From iced coffee to chai to airy, foamy cappuccinos, their baristas have been trained well. New Wave Coffee has become a must whenever I'm headed to the Logan Square Farmers Market. I've only had the drinks at New Wave, but they are stellar enough to entice me back. I like that this place is big enough to accommodate the large lines that form, although it seems to be a little loud and cavernous. I appreciate that they tried to give this coffeeshop some personality, but can't yet comment on its study-worthiness. However, if it's pure caffeine you crave, New Wave serves up a proper cup! read more

Good amount of food options but be careful with any adjustments (I've asked for no tomatoes on my sandwich and it comes with them anyway, thus has happened a couple of times). Can't beat the location and usually able to find a seat. read more

I'll try this place out again b/c our barista was great. We forgot to ask for skim milk in our hot chocolate and realized afterwards that it came with whole milk (maybe it was b/c I wasn't at SB concentrating on my order?) but they were super nice and offered to change our drinks with no charge...and a smile :) Thanks! 5 stars for friendly service, 2 stars for the mediocre, milked down hot chocolate and crumbly lemon knot. Bonus: parking is was easy on a Tuesday night. read more

An old friend came in from LA tonight and we wanted to grab something to drink to chill and catch up. I've been in the mood to stomp in Logan Square lately. I just keep gravitating towards it and I can't put my finger on why. With that said, I wasn't in the mood for liquor and coffee would get me wired. I passed New Wave Coffee a few weekends ago on my way to The Rocking Horse and made a mental note to drop in for a drink. Tonight was that night! I have to say I liked this place. I'm not a big coffee house guy either but green tea sounded incredible. However, coming into New Wave Coffee isn't about the drinks, it's about the scene. It's very hipster, but that's cool. I loved the music, a lot of 80s and some New Order which was sweet. It was quiet and we hung out for about an hour undisturbed. I'm going to give it 3 stars because it really was just A-OK. Nothing spectacular, predictable, but a nice way to spend a Sunday evening. read more

Nintendo. Grandma's furniture. Scrumptious vegetarian and Organic delights. Check!Check! and Check! A friend and I decided to meet here for some snacks and drinks. We shared a strawberry rhubarb pie, with a delectable almond streusel crust. The place was very comfortable. The people, authentically nice, and the pricing oh so right! I do have to say this spot is one of the few places open on a weekday after 9pm. Love it! I shall be back! read more

I'm surprised it took me so long to try New Wave. While I usually opt for nearby Gaslight or Intelligentsia, I wanted to make my way in to the space that faces the namesake square for Logan Square. The space is really big, so big that it has two entrances - one on Milwaukee Ave and the other on Logan Blvd. My cortado was solid, served in a glass and the WiFi worked well enough for my small assignment. All in all, a reliable coffee shop experience. I don't find it as cozy or crave-worthy as some of my favorites on the west side but New Wave definitely beats a Starbucks any day of the week. read more

I've come into here a few times in the past, and it's just about always exactly what I need. Some of my favorite coffee in my neighborhood, and I really enjoy their bagels! Last time I was in, even needing to substitute my usual everything for a wheat bagel turned out great. Their sandwiches are really good as well, and can't recommend enough. Service is also top notch. The staff is friendly and personable, and are really fast at getting through the order usually. Sometimes the WiFi is a little iffy, but the saving grace there is that they do have a printer for fairly cheap rates, so it's a bit of a trade off. Overall is therefore a pretty good place to hang out and do some computer work. read more

I love this place, even on Sunday market days when it's packed. Love that they offer an extra free drink when they mess up your order (which has only been making it hot when I wanted cold or vice versa). Love the very friendly helpful staff and the decor! I especially love that they still make drinks they no longer have on the menu for those of us who remember our old favorite drinks! Their pastries are delish, their sandwiches on the baguettes are really good, their coffees are awesome (including their beautiful designs when they serve them to you) and their bagels, what can I say, their options are awesome instead of your usual cream cheese. I'll be back as usual! read more

I dig this place. It's bright and open yet comfy and serves Metropolis coffee. Each time I've been here I've had the soup and it's always been great (best = vegan broccoli and cheese.) I came here every other night when my internet was being installed (several weeks, aghh). The staff was always kind and smiled back at me, occasionally giving me a coffee upgrade. The couches cozy and inviting. The coffee is okay, not bad, best is the latte and cafe americano. But the music is loud and generally intrusive, I mean cafes are for conversation and people studying, aren't they? Added with the people who occasionally play video games. And the internet is horrendously difficult to access because so many people are there using it! It's good for an afternoon stop during the market, any time in the day, just don't come at night. read more

New Wave has become a common stop while enjoying early morning walks with my pup. Their coffee tastes good and packs quite the caffeinated punch. I order mine over ice and barely need to add any sugar but still toss in a few granules as I need a little sweetness to cut away some of the bitterness. I've also picked up their donuts from time to time (if they still have any) and they're pretty tasty (also vegan, which I am not but taste great regardless). Everyone behind the counter is friendly and attentive. I've sat outside with aforementioned pooch and enjoyed people/dog watching with him. Overall, I'm always happy to give New Wave my money. Now, the only suggestion I will make is regarding a water bowl for dogs outside. It's pretty GD funny as mine refuses to drink out of the Starbucks dog bowl, he's clearly a pup with an opinion like his mama. We support small/local/family owned businesses. So, if y'all wouldn't mind, a water bowl for the canines would be a lovely little addition to the outdoor seating area. Brando will certainly be thankful. read more
