I was at the MDW airport and wanted to get some Thai food and so I headed to New China Tea. The ambience is okay, it seems like a good restaurant for family hangouts. There is a mini aquarium at the entrance that's really a kid-magnet. The kids in the restaurant were really fascinated with it. It's a small restaurant and seemed authentic. I got the combination fried rice and pineapple smoothie. The smoothie was soooo delicious I still think about it. I thought the friend rice was delicious as well. I think the only problem I had was getting the attention of the server. I was waiting for a while and had to continuously wave to see if he'll notice me. If you can handle Chinese food, this might be a 4 or 5 star review. Unfortunately, although I asked for "No MSG and no /low salt", if they actually honored my request, there is something else in the food that is making my heart race (and not in a good way :) and body feel pretty creepy in general. Memory Lane (scroll past for more pertinent info :) I haven't ordered Chinese food for over ten years because it always seems too salty and generally unhealthy. Because I decided to hibernate to ride out the very cold, treacherous weather, I decided to order out for food. I thought I would give New China Tea a try. We had eaten in the restaurant about 16-17 years ago and I did not recall any problem with the food - - although I do believe the service was slow at the time. Hopefully it has improved over the years. I also decided to order here because I noticed another Yelp review that mentioned Thai food, which they did not have on the menu years ago. Placing the Order Placing the order went well. The phone was promptly answered and I found it easy enough to talk to the call taker, Orlando. He said that I could get my order w/o the MSG and salt. He gave me the cost of my order and said it would be delivered in about 45 minutes. Getting the Delivery About 30 minutes later, the delivery driver called to let me know that he was in front of the house and would bring up my order. He was nice and I didn't mind giving a little extra in the tip for service on such a cold day. I guess because the weather was so cold, the food was more warm than hot. Enjoying the Food (at the time) The food was packaged nicely. You truly can't beat the Chinese lunch specials. I ordered three different dishes to sustain me during the coming cold days. The two lunch specials that I ordered were the Orange Chicken and the General Tso Chicken. They both came in large foam containers. I did not specify the type of rice and was actually glad to see fried rice - - and a lot of it - - in each container. There also was plenty of chicken in each container. Both dishes were hot /spicy. I forgot to let Orlando know that I wanted mild. Due to the hot/spicy factor, both dishes tasted pretty much the same until you add the orange sauce. The orange sauce came in two separate small containers. As I said, there is a LOT of food in these containers and I split the food into separate containers for future meals. I put a sampling of each one on a plate. Although spicy, the chicken from both orders was still very tasty and the fried rice was also very good. An egg roll comes with the lunch special. I had one of them and it was good also. The other item I ordered was a small Pineapple Curry with chicken. It came in a plastic container with a separate small container of white rice. This is the first time that I ever tried this particular dish. It was okay. The chicken is not breaded like the other dishes that I ordered. It did not taste particularly good. I think if I cook it a bit more it might taste better. This was definitely the healthiest of the meals that I ordered and I am hoping that it may be safe from the salt and MSG. I can't really tell just now because I sampled everything together. There were three fortune cookies and three small forks in the bag. I made a point to ask for 2 packets of mustard - - since other places have neglected to include the mustard in the past. I also asked for 4 packets of the sweet sauce. I told Orlando I did not need any soy sauce. I ended up getting numerous packets of all three. This place served up a lot of (for the most part) VERY GOOD TASTING food for a REASONABLE PRICE and DELIVERED it QUICKLY . If you can handle Chinese food without feeling like you may have to make a trip to the Emergency Room, this could be a good place. As for me, I think that life will be easier and longer if I stay away from Chinese food. read more

I use to eat from here years ago and since I was in the neighborhood I didn't see why not to have it for lunch. Well I order $50 worth of food for my family I didn't receive the egg rolls I brought and even asked for sweet and sour sauce for the fried rice and didn't have 1 packet in the bag. Chicken fried rice was dark brown and burnt the pineapple chicken fried rice was white rice with undercooked chicken. The only thing that came out right and good with the beef tomato green pepper extra spicy. Nothing new about New China Tea. Somehow, amazingly they have avoided decorating this place since Nixons trip to China. As a kid any ethnic restaurant was Taboo for my father, he had many pseudo racist fears about furiners and their habits in the kitchen, in fact the only Chinese restaurant he would get take out from was ten miles from my home, and the only thing he would eat was either Chicken chow mein, or Beef chop suey. I say yuck to both. Because of my Fathers narrow ways, I missed out on those old kitschy Chinese experiences, I rarely ate the Americanized stuff. This adds up to one apprehensive boy when I walk into a place that looks like time stood still. A friend had told me when he was younger he would order the famous Scorpion drink, well I knew about Scorpions from another restaurant on the South side, so I was somewhat at ease knowing I could get a good buzz on while ingesting corn syrup and food coloring. The drinks were fine, reasonably priced, and I got my buzz on, er should I say added to my buzz I brought with. The staff is older and shrinking, I believe them to be the original staff, they have aged gracefully, but they seem tiny, even to my 5 foot 7 frame, these are very small people, another reason for this is the 8 cops that are scattered in the room all have on the full gear, making them look like transformers. Between the broken English handling the phone orders and the police radios blipping bits of coded information, it is quite the circus in there. I had the Ma Po Tofu, it was fine, a little greasy but the flavor was good and the tofu fresh. The pork in the dish was slightly charred which added a nice depth to the dish, my girlfriend had sweet and sour chicken which I am vehemently opposed to, thick soft batter doused in a glow in the dark tooth achingly sweet sauce, sends shivers down my spine thinking about it. She liked it. Pricing is basement prices, entrees come with choice of soup, and an egg roll, I think, I can't remember, did I mention i was drinking. Parking is a breeze, well unless you go on a Wednesday, park behind an Hispanic Pentecostal Church. When you exit the restaurant you will find yourself boxed in. I guess when speaking in tongues on a Wednesday it is tradition to pull up to the back bumper of all the cars to ensure the son of god doesn't have any worshipers leaving early. As an atheist, I avoid houses of religion. I walked to the back door and looked inside, this is not a "church" in the traditional Gothic style spired structure, this is a building that could just as easily be a Liberty Tax office or a Tanning salon. I looked inside and saw people waiting in a central line, they were being greeted by the minister and he would place a hand on their heads and, well once I saw the shaking, I couldn't take any more, I walked away. I decided to take a walk to a Mexican bakery and burn some time, did you know the stuff inside a Mexican Bakery all looks the same, just a different color? I burned 15 minutes and returned, they were still shouting and singing. I assessed my parking situation, Maybe I can move the concrete bumper? I searched the trunk for a pry bar, nothing big enough. I searched the alleys high and low for something anything, to build a ramp to drive my Subaru over the parking bumper. I returned with a shopping cart full of scraps of wood, a pallet and a couple of bricks. I then dragged over the dumpster from the Chinese restaurant, two of Chicagos finest looked at me but didn't seem concerned, I built a ramp out of a pallet and card board, This did not work. I was getting restless, my buzz was coming to a quick end, and I could feel the, "I told you not to park there." comment, brewing up from my patient gf. Looking around, I could see a pile of garbage in the alley, a dumpster 100 feet from where it belonged, my hands were greasy, and the damn Christians were still building up to the frenzy that my imagination decided would culminate in some kind of sacrifice soon. My Girlfriend says, "why don't you call that number." "Yeah, just call them in the middle of the sacrifice." I dialed the number, someone answered in Spanish, I said, "por favor, mi carro ay yer." Immediately a Gentleman with no blood or anything on his clothes came out, he assessed the situation and we were soon on our way. While they do have some American dishes, I would not recommend them. Stick with the Chinese cuisine. The current waiter is a sweetheart, but he is down to business! Don't get offended if he seems impatient -- he's the only guy working the entire floor! Cops still flood in here, so they've gotta be doing something right! Reliable little neighborhood place for eat in, pickup, or delivery. Though it has changed owners once or twice over the years, the interior has barely changed since the late 70s (I've been coming here since, so I should know). The carpet, booths, and bamboo/tiki decor are, truth be told, looking a little crummy these days. But it is sort of cozy and has its charm. Nobody comes anymore for the bar, but the smallish dining room usually has some business, and the take out seems busy. Food is usually tasty, assuming you like standard south side Cantonese-American grub. The shrimp egg foo young is exceptional, though -- it's one of our family staples, and I like their preparation better than just about anywhere else. This is like stepping out of a time machine, and finding yourself in post-War (that would be, "the Second World...") America. Wow. Tiki always makes me happy, and though this isn't a tiki bar per se, it does have a lot of that kitsch around. And for some reason, a display of popcans on top of a giant fish tank! But you do come for the food, and it's delicious. True to Chinese restaurant tradition, the lunch specials are great deals: a generous amount of food, soup, a scrumptious egg roll, and cookies for dessert. And you won't break the bank. The waiter is a friendly guy and takes care of you quickly and efficiently. As other reviewers have noted, this seems to be a favorite cop spot. Mindful that we had a reservation that night at a superior, top-notch Chinese restaurant, Sun Wah, we were not looking to dine in the same style here. We just happened to be on the south side at lunch time and this was a place we had passed while looking for parking a hour earlier. As old-school Chinese places go (i.e., Orange Garden), this was typical and not disappointing. The main room is in semi-tiki bar style decor: a ceiling grid of real bamboo, framed Asian 3-D flower art, and dim, lounge-like lighting. The place is probably a welcome, cool escape on a hot summer day. Upon entering, you can go directly past the large fish tank into the dining area, which has a half dozen tables for 2's plus another half dozen booths for 4's. Face away from the fish tank to see a huge flat-screen TV, probably the only thing that's been added here since the 1950s. A wall of glass windows divides this room from the well-stocked tiki bar, which has another set of 3 booths for 4's. We were willing to go with two of the pre-set luncheon meals from their lunch menu (everything is $4.99.), but the lone waiter (who may remind you of an Asian personification of Elmer Fudd) acknowledged that we were Chinese, and offered to substitute two dinner dishes for us. So we wound up with Chicken Chow Mein Cantonese Style (with pan-fried noodles) and Chow Fun Shee (a shrimp and curry noodles dish). Both were tasty and not overly sauced with corn starch. The portions were huge for two people and we wound up taking a third of it home. We observed that at another table, the people there took the luncheon specials and those plates were also overflowing with fried rice plus entrée. However, they were also given the included soup, egg rolls, and fortune cookies-- items that we did not get as part of our customized service at the same price. We also got no white rice. read more

This is an interesting review. I was recommended to this restaurant by a friend who lives close by. I owe her big time. The food here is Flavorful and Delicious! I have been to this establishment many times and they never disappoint. They have Chinese and Thai food selections. You can dine in or take out which I have done both. On 6/29/15, I had a situation that could of been bad but in the end, it turned out positive. I ordered take out like usual and then drove home (I live 35 minutes away). When I was ready to do a serious dig into my food, I discovered that one of my entrees didn't have the extra ingredient I asked for. I called and talked to the staff who wanted me to come back into the restaurant with the entree. Not possible. So I asked for the manager. Manager was very professional, offered me the same thing and I explained that I didn't live nearby. I asked if he could just credit my account. He said he was willing but that would mean on their end they would have to credit the whole take out order. I definitely didn't want that as that wouldn't be fair to them. We came to a compromise for the next time I get take out which was a win win. I dig the dingy, dank 1973 era wood paneling. But food/service isn't great. I did carry-out maybe 5 times when China Ho was doing their move, and ate in the restaurant once. I thought at the time tha China Ho on Pulaski, went out of business, and eating at NCT always made me want to cry a little bit into my soggy orange chicken. This is my go-to Chinese place when I meet up with my best friend. Used to be called, "Ho China Tea". Its not the best Chinese food, but its still pretty good. I always know what to expect - nothing has ever been bad here. The restaurant itself is kind of funny - retro wood paneling and cushion seats that desperately need an upholstery upgrade. I enjoy the large fish tank up front. The same lone server has been there for years, and he is a very sweet and cute little old man.
