I'm surprised there's only one review since Neptune Mountaineering was released from the clutches of bankrupt Backwoods Retail last year. Yes, things were grim 18 months ago. Fast forward to January 2018 and the inventory has been replenished, the interior has been remodeled and the retail space increased, and many of the same knowledgeable employees are still to be found. Neptune is the antithesis of the generic "outdoor lifestyle" places found in suburban shopping malls, with their me-too brands. Neptune carries a breadth of high end products for backcountry enthusiasts that can't be found in any other brick and mortar store in the region. read more

I admit it, I have a pet peeve about outdoor shops in prime climbing areas that don't bother to stock mountaineering boots in smaller women's sizes. REI's Denver and Boulder (pre-remodel) locations have both received letters on this topic (to their credit, they have responded). Both Neptune and Boulder Mountaineering are an exception and, consequently, have received many of my hard-earned dollars for climbing and AT ski gear. In addition, Neptune's Chuck Bird is a top-notch boot fitter, so it's worth paying him a visit before you give up on your $300+ boots or better yet, before you buy. This past winter I was in Neptune at least 6 times for their talks/presentations. Always very good! Recently I went in to upgrade my camping sleep system to something more lightweight for backpacking. Ellie was extremely helpful and knowledgable about their products. I went in thinking I wanted one bag and she had me try several and I left with one I had not even considered. Always great customer service when I go in there. read more

Neptune has gone down hill. Gary's shop used to be the shop if you needed the best. Since selling out to some Texas outlet company that seems to be their direction. Discount outlet crap. Their boot selection was shameful for a so called mountaineering shop. No sizes of anything, no selection..the guy sent me down the road to golden for a pair of hiking boots. No joke. What the he$$ happened to an epic shop!? read more

A good size mountaineering shop. The staff has always been very relaxed with pleasant customer service. They have a good selection from climbing clothing, shoes and gear. I never thought I would have to write a review like this. Neptune Mountaineering is over-priced and has poor service. The staff does not seem to know the gear that well. They seem to lack experience and knowledge. I have been before, a coulple of years ago and they were rude but seemed to know a little more than my latest experience. It seems like if you are selling expensive gear you would have an experienced staff to compliment it. I won't be back. read more

If you need to rent cross country skis do not go to Neptune Mountaineering! Their prices are 3 times as much as getting them in Estes park and more than twice as much as anywhere in Boulder. A one day cross country ski rental from Neptune cost $30. If you reserve ahead of time at Crystal Ski Shop the cost is $12. The anytime price at Estes Park Mountain Shop is $10. I would have never rented my ski's here except I was already set up with my gear and was on a date. Also, the incompetent person that set us up with our ski's gave use the wrong size for our weight and was slow about the process. Go to a real ski shop for rentals so you do not get ripped off. read more

Cool place, the staff is very knowledgeable and are happy to chat and give advice. There's also a lot of climbing books you're welcome to sit and browse through to plan your next trip. Didn't purchase anything there but rented crash pads, and had no issues with it. read more

The BEST selection of Ibex wool clothing in the front range!! I was able to find exactly what I was looking for and they staff rock. I would highly recommend this shop to anybody looking for cutting edge outdoor gear like Ibex, Oboz, and Westcomb. read more

I have about 20 years of experience skiing and climbing so I know that an air of arrogance abounds in the outdoor sports world. If you want proof, go to Neptune Mountaneering. The staff there are mean and pretend like they know what they are talking about. I had a fairly bad experience there with one of the managers. A guy in his mid-thirites who looked so drugged out (I swear he was on pills) that he was incredibly rude when I corrected him on some specifics regarding climbing gear... maybe it was the drugs or he just can't take it from a woman. Either way I have no interest in ever going to that store. read more

Neptune takes care of its customers. I purchased AT boots from them a few of years ago. However, after having the boots fit to my feet several times by their staff and by Larry the Boot Fitter over the years, I still suffered from major pain while skiing. This year, I gave up on the boots because I couldn't deal with the pain anymore. I realized that I had let too much time go by between from the time I purchased the boots, but I decided to return to Neptune's to see if they could help me out at all. I was amazed at how invested they were in fixing the situation, and getting me into boots where I could actually enjoy my time in the backcountry. They took back my old boots, and gave me an excellent credit towards a new pair of boots, that allowed me to get into a new pair of boots for just $50 more. Thank you Neptune's!!!! Neptune is a great shop. In particular, I love how every time you walk in the door, there is someone there to greet you and help you. I most recently went to Neptune to buy AT boots and unfortunately they didn't have very many boots available. However, they didn't pressure me into buying a boot that didn't fit. I walked away with ski socks instead. Their rental shop has always been a favorite of mine -- great for renting AT gear or snowshoes or x-country skis (though those are a bit overpriced for rentals) that will keep you comfy in the great outdoors. read more

It's nice to be able to shop in peace, the employees were helpful when I needed them but weren't stocking me when I was just trying on packs. They have great selection in all outdoor equipment but I was only there to buy a pack. Ended up getting a mile high mountaineering pack that I'm really excited about. This is one of the coolest stores I've been in! The combination of historic pictures and old gear, give it a museum feel that you could get lost in, but the gear on the shelves leaves no one in doubt about the real purpose of the store. The staff is highly knowledgeable without being pushy, and there is an incredible selection. It feels like a more highly specialized REI for people who are serious about their mountain sports. read more

I want to support a local business that has knowledge, customer service and a variety of product that the other store may not be carrying, but Neptune mountaineering is not the place. I purchased a pair of La Sportiva Explorer approach shoe from them and after two weeks of moderate use the eyelets on the shoe have come apart and the tongue has ripped when putting on the shoe. This was quite the disappointment is the shoe quality from a brand that is know for rugged reliable well made shoes but not this model, buyer beware. Upon returning to Neptune to see if I would be able to exchange the shoe I was told that they would have to return to La Sportiva for warranty repair. Hold on these shoes are less than two weeks old, I really should be able to return the shoes, after all don't you stand by and with the product that you choose to carry in your establishment. Well ok let's do a warranty request with La Sportiva. Over two weeks later no shoes and no movement with La Sportiva or Neptune. Summer is here and in full swing and out almost $130 in what is a premier brand of approach shoes. Neptune stand with your customers and the brand you carry. read more
