REI has been our go to for gear and seasonal casual clothes for decades, yes 4 decades! Even before they were in Boulder we would drive to Westminster which was the closest location back. Wisely they moved the North Metro location to Boulder. I know many of the staff on a first name basis and they never steer me wrong. My husband is the avid camper, hiker , adventurer, but I have been lucky to find xc skis here for years, to have my bike serviced here and most recently have bought much footwear and casual outdoor seasonal wear. What I was looking for today was not yet in stick for summer but I will look again next week when the spring/summer sale starts. With a membership there are so many perks so the savings are huge, especially kf you use their partner credit card. Even leaving empty handed today, it was a fun experience . And when my husband needs a new tent, no matter how small in comparison to this display today, he will get it here and at a good price for exceptional quality. read more

This location continues to decline in outdoor community vibe and customer service - perhaps it's REI all over? Although the Denver store is pretty decent, in my opinion. My 4 year old was peddling around on a bike, and since he's still learning to stop - was not able. The bearded bros came a running "no no he can't do that". I was waiting for the mace. Being grandiose but not too far off. Their panic was hilariously overzealous. Take pride in your job but brother - Your assistant daytime front end merch manager status equals zero power. Y'all need to chill the eff out. You're an outdoor gear store. Supposed to be a part of and embrace your community. There's a reason why people are turning in their memberships left and right. Just went in to the REI in boulder for an online order pickup. I bought some hiking boots and hiking poles. I wanted to try them on in store so I went to the back of the store where the shoe department is. I was quickly helped by Thomas. They ended up having a size smaller in stock so we compared the two. I chose the smaller size and Thomas helped me pick out inserts for arch support and cut them to perfectly fit the boot. I bought the Salomon X Ultra 4 Mid GORE-TEX Hiking Boots with SOLE Performance Medium Wide Insoles. My Fiance liked the boots so much he got the men's version and Thomas also helped him insoles for his boots. Thomas was very knowledgeable and friendly, great advice! Great store in Boulder! Usually has great selection of anything you need. The women's sale section usually has styles of brands that are actually cheaper than buying that thing from the brands sale section which is nice. Good selection of things but tends to run out of smaller sizes pretty quickly which can be a pain. Lines usually go fast at the cashier and the associates are very helpful and knowledgeable. I am a reI fan. I do a lot of outdoors activities and they have everything I usually need. Also I like their return policy. I buy stuff more confidently knowing that I could return it if it doesn't work. Indeed, it is very rare that I have to return something. But knowing that I could makes me feel better. I visited today for the first time since the beginning of the pandemic. They are quite well organized. I had to to wait outside for about 10 minutes. Pretty much your standard REI. Good place to get hiking/climbing/camping supplies if you need them to be relatively light and are willing to pay relatively more. My only criticism is that the climbing cordage/webbing is not in the climbing section. It's hidden in a secret warehouse area. I'd expect this if it were...say, the Jacksonville, FL REI but...in BOULDER? There's so much climbing all around this location. Maybe climbers go to the hip local shop? And I don't know about it? I'm passing through this area and need roof racks for my car. Every other REI in the country allows dogs inside but these guys are unique. It's very hot outside here and they told me the dog needed to stay in the car. Specifically because there is a dog upstairs in the office. However, the dog can come in with a vest on? So if the dog is wearing a vest than jt won't bother the dog upstairs? Makes no sense. In a hot place like this, with rules in Colorado about dogs being safe in high car temps, you think they'd let dogs in the store. Especially when you're just passing through and don't have a house to put them in. No thanks. This place sucks. read more

I was looking to burn some Christmas gift cards on some solid alpine clothing to trek some Colorado mountains in the winter. As I was sorely underprepared and nearly frozen the first time I needed something reliable gear to withstand the elements. As I browsed the clothing section an employee was eager to help explaining to me the different brands and they advantages. Since the store was cleaned out over the holidays they didn't have my size so the store clerk was nice enough to offer to scan anything to see if they had anything in stock and provide a sku number if I wanted to order online. Walking out of there I felt like I found some great deals with REI's brand of clothing. I'll be coming back if I need any other mountain gear. read more

He is a wonderful associate who took one look at our sons feet and without hesitation, brought out a few pair of boots he felt would fit him. Bingo, first pair he tried on were the winners. So apparently Spyder clothing is made by a company other than Spyderco which makes knifes. Omg could that not be anymore confusing? REI still is in fail mode after claiming that they had all kinds of Spyder products like ski jackets and when I went here to hold them up to that. They had NO such products. Only for kids. Take note, Boulder REI is under renovation and I am so excited to see what it will have inside! The Boulder store has always seemed inadequate to the other REI's I have ever been to, so this expansion and construction is much needed. Supposedly they are incorporating tons of green strategies and sustainable building tactics, which is always a plus on my scale. They will have new sections for paddles, bike and ski shops, and even rooms that non profits and community organizations can use. In the meantime, while the store is under construction, REI Boulder is trying to maintain a good selection of products and customer service, but both have kind of suffered. The staff are a little more edgy (I guess I would be too if I had to hear construction all day) and they seem to be slim on the staff side. There were only 3 cashiers and a long line of people waiting to pay, so an expansion in store size will probably be followed by an expansion of new hires. My favorite part of REI? The Co-op membership cards... This membership gives you money back on full-price items... It also allows you to go to special sales, like the REI garage sales... Where they resell merchandise that got returned that they can no longer sell at full price. Score for us when the item was used once and the poor camper didn't like it! My boyfriend got a really cool European camping cooker for a $1! It is small, light and works great. We have never had a problem with it. I saw online that they had the kayak cart I wanted in stock,so I went to the store to buy it. The clerk said they show they have one but after 15 minutes with a couple of people searching it couldn't be found. So I went home and ordered it online from REI to ship to store for pickup. I ordered it on May 26th and it was to arrive at the store on June 5th, today is June 8th and no kayak cart. I called the 800 customer service number and was told that because they had sales at the time I ordered and delays were expected. Really 14 days + to get something I ordered online is very slow. REI failed in the store with merchandise they couldn't locate and fail again by delaying my order with no communication telling me of the delay. I still don't have my merchandise and only know that I should have it in the near future. read more

I stopped by this store on a three occasions to rent ski's or shop and the kids there seriously are jerks. They really need to go to McDonalds or someplace where they can be their natural condescending ass holes and not be out of place. REI boulder send your weenies to the Denver or Seattle store for training. Or become a TJ Max where they'll fit in Better. I have mixed feelings about this review. The bike servicing was good. I was told it would cost $80 for a bike up with another $15 for two inner tubes. If anything else was needed, I would be called. The next day around noon I was called and told my bike was ready for pickup but instead of the $95 I was expecting I was charged $163. The brake pads cost $42! We have been members for more than 30 years, and today marked a low point in customer service. We had visited the store to find new hiking boots, and waited patiently while a young woman was helped. The shoe area representative clearly saw us - acknowledged us when she returned with 6 boxes of boots for this other customer to try on - and, then she turned on her heel and walked away to another part of the store to ask if anyone needed help. REI apparently no longer stands behind their products or their return policy since the Covid 19 epidemic. I waited almost 4 months trying to return two identical products I had purchased. I finally chose to mail them back. They insisted that I had returned the second item, which I did, only to purchase it again a few days later. BOTH PRODUCTS WERE DEFECTIVE. All of these transactions are visible on my REI account for close to $500. They have kept my second item and are sending me $50 instead of the $250 that I paid for it. It took them a month to respond after receiving the items. Sorry to say REI has just lost an enthusiastic supportive customer. NO I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND REI TO A FRIEND. read more

I'd give at least 4 stars for REI overall - I've been patronizing them for over 10 years and been a member of their co-op almost as long. I like their online store (and outlet!) and buy from there often. I like getting my annual dividend/rebate to spend. I've appreciated the local efforts REI has contributed in sweat and dollars to local causes, including great trailwork events, etc. I guess I can't say anything bad about their business overall or company policies. But shopping in the new renovated store has been no better than a 3-star experience. I might even go so far to say my experiences were better in the old, pre-expanded store. Problems? Not really a marked increase in selection (and stocking of sizes) with the larger floor space (online much better), cold and somewhat harsh warehouse-like environment, and customer service issues. And LONG LINES - seems like when I go, there's like 2 checkout staff and one online-pickup/returns staff. I've really waited more than ten minutes to pay/pickup/return pretty much every visit. They really need better training and more managers. One time, an REI person at the register was scanning thru ALL the Acorn socks online in order to determine the proper "code" to enter - WTF!? Staff on the floor have still been kinda helpful, but aren't always that knowledgeable about the gear. Maybe the bigger store has just magnified some of the previous issues and they'll eventually make adjustments; hope so. Also, in Boulder, there are a plethora of better specialized places to get the gear of your choice: running stores for trail runners, ski/board shops for snowsports (Ski Deals, Christy's, Divas), all kinds of bike shops (Full Cycle, University, Sports Garage, The Fix, Bicycle Village), and Neptunes, TNF, Mont-Bell for mountaineering & climbing & hiking & camping. And all the gear choices we have online? Well, fughetaboutit! So REI plays the common denominator route, selling mostly basics like rain jackets, nalgene bottles (now sigg too), camelbaks, hiking shoes, and ends up a store full of weekend warriors, newbies and some tourists. I guess it's the Whole Foods or Target of outdoor gear. Hey, couple times of year they have pretty good sales/clearance - that's when you'll find me scouring the back racks. It's true, you can't beat their 100% satisfaction guaranteed policy, but they don't price adjust or match, which stinks if you buy something & it goes on sale the next day. But you can always return it! Oh, and why can't we bring our non-service dogs in anymore? that would be a cool Boulder thing read more

Ridiculous. Ordered a bike online that was said to be ready the next day, they send me an email the next day saying it is ready for pick up. So I drive all the way to Boulder to pick it up and the guy says it's going to be another 7 days to assemble a bike. I tell him it told me it was ready for pick up and he says "but at the bottom it says to call first" why would you even send the email in the first place? Not to mention I had a friend order the exact same bike from the exact same location and it was ready in 45 mins after he ordered it. He can't give it to me unassembled but they can ship it to you unassembled...ya that makes sense. read more
