Community Cycles is an amazing local establishment. They have deep technical expertise of all things bike-related from vintage steel 10 speeds to rad new ebikes. they can pretty much figure out a solution to any problem and are very friendly. and if you want to learn a thing or two about working on your own bike, they are more than happy to teach. I've received their newsletters for years but today was the first day I made it into the shop. Within the bike to work newsletters I noted that today there would be free bike fittings (ooh, yeah!). I RSVP'd immediately and counted down the days. This morning I received an email letting me know that the hours of the bike fittings has been expanded with a request that I indicate what time would work well for me to stop in. I of course followed-up immediately. Knowing the general vicinity I headed off after work/appointment to find Community Cycles (located just steps away from Boulder Beer). I circled a bit as I had difficulty locating the building numbers. Eventually I heard a hearty laugh and decided "that must be where they are" and b-i-n-g-o I was there. I waled my bike right straight through the shop (sales/sign in/stands to work on your own bike) to the rear car parking area. There was a tent set up for bike maintenance as well as a few parked bikes and maybe 100 bikes I presumed were for sale. As I'd never been there before I inquired where sign-in was. I walked back through the store but only seemed to note a "volunteer" sheet and a petition. I asked another employee and was informed that the volunteer check-in was also used for us folks with appointments (surely my typed name was near the top of the list. Total blonde moment). I waited about 15-20 minutes munching on snacks I brought as well as talking to other customers and volunteers. Eventually my waiting time was over and Ray was happy to get the ball rolling on my bike fitting. He asked me many questions about my biking habits as well as any discomforts I had noted on the bike. He also had a great sense of humor so I greatly enjoyed my fitting which took a bit of time. After all the adjustments were said and done he had me go for a test ride. Upon return a volunteer was happy to put the final touches on my bike (some tape to mark my seat height - great suggestion from Ray as I'm sure my friend would not want me to etch into her carbon fiber seat post). I was excited that they offered a discount on Memberships for this month ($25 - down from about $40) as well as a 10% bike to work month discount on merchandise (other than bikes or trailers). They also have an upcoming party which looks fantastic (please see the pics for the business). I'm really happy that I made the time to stop in and will most definitely be back to get my other bikes fitted as well as consider them for my other bike needs. read more

Cycling is a very popular sport here in Colorado and especially in the city of Boulder where there are more bike shops than car dealers. Community Cycles is a great little shop that sells and fixes up used bikes that have been donated to them and also sells parts for the do it yourself biker. They even allow you to come in and volunteer your time to repair old donated bikes. To me, this is a great opportunity to learn more about how to repair my own bike. Prices for parts are very inexpensive compared to new prices at other places. Staff is friendly and helpful. read more

Community cycles is a different type of bike store, in that it's a workshop where you can sign up for a membership so that you can take your bike there to work on it. With a membership you get access to their tools and work spaces as well as their bicycle maintenance classes that they offer. If you don't want to become a member you can also come here just to buy bicycle parts, which is what I did. The person at the register helped me find a good seat post for my bike and figure out what size I needed. Great place to come and learn more about how to work on your bicycle yourself and/or get bicycle Parts for way cheaper than most other bike shops. Highly recommend! read more

I wanted a 20" knobby for my fixie folding bike and this shop had it for a low price with tube, both appeared new. I installed it across the street on a public lawn with my own tools, and returned for air and to recycle an old tube. I should have recycled the tire, too. I did not look at bike prices because I'm not in the market and prefer small single speed bicycles. I don't question their prices or how they acquire donations. It's a community shop and if profits require hot bikes from cholo chopshops, it's all good. read more

A great place to connect with the down to earth (not very Bouldery) bicycle community. Get help or just advice on what to do with your bike or how to get one. You can buy used+repaired bikes, old parts piecemeal, new consumables (cables, etc). You milage may vary depending on who you talk to - it is mostly volunteer run. It's also a non-profit which does good work on the side of supporting local cycling. Also, if you're looking to get involved here or in local cycling issues, this is a great place to find people who know. I love community cycles. $210 at rei for a full suspension tune? Now I can just take my bike to them to do my seal for way less. Community cycles is filled with avid bikers and cyclists who will help you do anything you need to your bike. They have all the tools necessary. They helped me replace my cabling and it cost me $2.50 for new cables and housing. The earn a bike program also looks awesome. Either way the $40 membership is totally reasonable. Id recommend them in a heartbeast. read more

Liars. Do not donate; do not go to this shop. Went in to Community Cycles in Boulder to look at a specific bicycle on Monday (Jun 21) and would have bought it but they said their cash register was closed so I had to come back when they re-opened on Thursday (Jun 24). They said they would hold it for me until Friday (Jun 25). Monday afternoon, with the guy on the floor, we put a note on it, "Hold for..." Went in today to find it had been sold. Said there was a note on it and they said, "No, there wasn't." I showed them a photo of the note on the bicycle on my phone. Liars. The guy who I talked with on Monday was there but nobody seemed to care and they certainly weren't about to apologize. They offered me no apology until I said they might want to apologize and they did nothing to make the situation right. I needed this bike for a scheduled ride this weekend. Your lying has caused me some problems with the weekend. Liars. The question is, what else will Community Cycles lie about? Liars, all of them. Horrible customer service. Took my kids here this weekend and was shocked at the overpriced bikes for what they are, considering they are donations and this place used to be about helping community. Some staff were nice but two of them wouldn't even show any interest in helping. Disappointed. read more

I just moved to Boulder and am working on building myself a bike at Community Cycles. it's a GREAT organization that provides an important service to the community by offering everyone - adults, students, work-release prisoners, and teens - the opportunity to receive a bike through their Earn-A-Bike program. It takes 15 hours of work to earn a bike, and I've learned a good deal about bikes just from doing my hours. Once you meet your 15 hour quota, you can pick out a bike that you like, fix it up, and take it home. They also hold community bike skills workshops on Saturdays that are free for members and cheap for the public. I would agree with the previous reviewer in saying that, if you're a bike novice and know nothing about bikes, you'll have to take a good deal of initiative. I've found that everyone there has been more than willing to help you with whatever you're working on if you ask, but you have to be willing to ask. They won't hold your hand, so be prepared to interrupt the hard-working facilitators every 5 minutes to ask them questions. 4 stars. CC does a LOT for the community and has a lot to offer, yet you must be a very engaged and assertive, committed person to go in there without any knowledge of bikes. read more

I worked through the Earn A Bike program in September. It is unbelievable how much I was able to learn about bike repair, including peripheral topics like how to fit your bike, tips for using tools, how to select good parts, and extended discourse on the demerits of old french frames, fixed vs multi speed bikes, and steel frame vs aluminum vs carbon frames. The staff is extremely knowledgeable, eager to help, and very flexible with the program. The training is really comprehensive. You even get build your own wheels. It's like taking a free class in bike repair and then getting a bike at the end for free. Through Earn A Bike, I built a rock-solid fuji road bike with a rear rack. With this bike I was able to get an awesome job delivering health food around LA (on my bike)! Big thanks to Community Cycles. I really owe you guys! The shop is clean, organised, and has a dope color scheme to boot. They play afro-funk over the speakers if you go on the right day. This place used to be a great resource for 'community cyclers'. I have gone multiple times for tunes, instruction, and parts. I was very disappointed on my last trip. I stopped by to inquire about derailleur adjustment. I was very rudely told that 'they don't do that anymore'. Sadly, a once great org has acquired the Boulder hubris of being better that it's customers and supporters. I hope that in the future Community Cycles will re-think it's place in the very community it serves and stops trying to be Boulder cool. Help people ride bikes. read more

I bought a GREAT mountain bike last year for 650, membership included. I just sold that bike for 610 and I never did a tune-up or change a component. Just different inner tubes. So the investment was GREAT......The people are friendly enough, but they get stressed and hurried and impatient (just very slightly)...which i think is normal if you have been in the shop. The prices are GREAT, but you might end up buying $40-$50 worth of stuff over a year you never use....that's part of playing around. I think this place is a solid 4.5. read more

I'm a junior at CU and was looking for a bike to replace my recently stolen one. I chose this place because 1. its nonprofit and 2. I wanted something cheap. I found a decent old mountain bike for 180 which seemed a little overpriced but I said what the heck its to a good cause. 4 days later my pedal falls out while im riding. Turns out the left crank was completely stripped and someone tried to JB weld the pedal in. (seems pretty sheisty to me) So now I had to buy a new left crank and set of pedals. Fortunately the guys at full cycle on the hill were super cool and hooked me up with some used parts. I love those guys, since freshmen year they have been super chill when I need a repair or replacement of something. I'm about to write them a 5 star review. Anyways f these guys. seriously read more

My daughter and I went into the shop in late summer to check out their bikes and see what they were all about (first time there). It was a couple weeks before school started so I think they were selling their bikes as soon as they became ready and didn't have many to chose from. I was trying to find out what the deal was with the approx. 100 bicycles that were sitting out on the side of the building (many of which had price tags). Again, my first time there and I didn't know anything about it except that they sold used bikes. I went into the shop, asked for some help, and waited around for 10 mins until I got the attention of one of the male 'managers.' I asked about the bikes and rather than give me a simple explanation, he just repeated "Don't even look there. Pretend as if they don't exist." "Those bikes are not even there." "All you need to do is look in the back." I mean, how is that helpful to a first-time visitor?? I had money in my pocket and was eager to buy a bike. He treated me as if he just wanted me to go away, couldn't be bothered. The guy was snarky, belittling, huffy and frankly, should ease up on the caffeine because he was way high strung. Left there annoyed and uninterested in going back. read more

All staff and volunteers were incredibly friendly, helpful and extremely astute in assisting me (as well as balancing the needs of a very busy public). The experience was not only inspiring and empowering toward biking, moreover in the sense of community values. My new nom-de-plume: "I am a woman who built my own bike". I joined the Earn-a-Bike Program. It took me three months (a long, hot July break) but I did it and I am damn proud. It's true that I arrived with a mechanical aptitude and some experience with tools. I had also already worked some on my old bike. However, I had never opened the crank case, nor had I put a wheel hub together with new ball bearings. You can't be squeamish about dirt or grease. Wear old, dark clothes. Sometimes the shop can be rather male dominated. It's not that the "boys" treat you badly. It's that you are invisible. You have to get in their face to get some help. But that's at night. Try Friday morning. My take on the organization is that they are open to new people. Try it. read more

Community cycles is a great place to go work or your bike and find all the parts that you may need. They are super helpful and accommodating. I think that they could focus on bicycle maintenance education here a bit more. I had a hard time learning bike mechanics here, even though I volunteered for quit a while. Overall it is a great shop, and if you really want to learn, you can learn here. I think there overall strength is there very happy customer service and cool bicycle culture. read more

I built a commuter bike to get to school here. They have all the tools and guidance you need to build, maintain and overhaul your bikes. CC is a great non profit organization. However, its important to note things are at times disorganized. Be prepared to take the initiative and ask for help or teach yourself basic bike skills. Overall, highly recommended. read more

Let me start off by saying that this is definitely the cheapest bike shop in town, but that comes with the cost of terrible products and asshole people. First off the products are all bad and a lot are broken. They sold both my friend and my patched tubes that didn't hold air and wouldn't give us our money back or let us trade it in. It's mostly all garbage. The environment in the store is bad and dirty and one of the main employees, Dax, is an asshole. Even though it's cheap the things break and it would be better to go to a good bike shop. I would much rather go to the fix or bicycle village, which are both very close and are good bike shops. Overall I really dislike community cycles and would rather go to any good ship which sells good parts and makes you feel welcome in the store. read more
