One of the best bike shops in Boulder. My go to for maintenance and out of the door bike repairs. Awesome staff.

I rarely take the time to write reviews, but this bike shop and the people there are so good that I have to write a review. First, the bike. I bought a BMC Teammachine and it is absolutely the best bike I could have hoped for. Just perfect. The owner did the fit for me himself, and he did an excellent job. The bike and the fit are perfect. I wanted a few weeks to write this review to make sure I could speak to the followup service. Every time I have gone into the shop with questions, or for help, they deliver. Little noise coming from the bike, fixed in seconds. Need some air, they are pumping up my tires and checking my bike. Everyone should be lucky enough to have this experience in a bike shop. Turns out it's not luck, you just have to drop by Boulder Cycle Sport. Don't believe anything on their website. I live in a neighboring town. I was looking for medium Pearl Izumi leg warmers, which their website says are available "in store." Their website also says "open on Sunday." Drove 12 miles only to find out they are closed on Sunday. So, I drove back in on Monday, only to find out that their north store doesn't carry Pearl Izumi; I was told that their south store carried them. So, I drove the extra 6 miles to the south store only to find out that they had no medium leg warmers, despite their website. Last time I deal with that store. read more

The best bike people you could work with. Not only are they friendly and form, but Justin, the owner, is a regular good samaritan. He helped me after he found me walking my bike home, changing my tube and pumping up the tire. I wasn't even his first assist of the night! We drove down from Fort Collins to pick up a stem we ordered from the store. Turns out, it wasn't going to work with my bike. I cannot say enough about the service we received and how wonderful the staff was. They gave us options and explained everything concisely. I've had them convert my four year old bike to 1x11, multiple shock services as I ride my bike a lot and a few repairs due to rider issues. I bought a Pinarello F12. I had pain on every ride, and they had no idea why. I had a "professional RETUL" fit. I wound up with frame 2 sizes too small, and couldn't use the Talon Ultra, which was built for the F12 The handle bar was too wide, he didn't measure my shoulders. The seat was too high, saddle too far back and tilted -5 degrees. Any wonder my hands were numb and my shoulders were sore? The owner is full of misinformation, and arrogant, and lacks the knowledge to do a proper bike fit. The mechanics are incompetent, and let my bike out of their shop with many issues,(see prior post). read more

Always condescending and stuck up. Were never very friendly, but I was willing to look past that. Not anymore. The last straw was when they sold me a tube that had a hole in it (potentially due to a manufacturing defect, or some mystery, I'm not sure.) When I brought it back literally 15- 20 minutes later they didn't trust me and told me they thought it was a pinch flat. (even though I could not have possibly ridden on it in the 15 minutes since I bought it). To add insult to injury, upon bringing it back, I realized it was a 650c tube, even though I had grabbed it from above the 700c label on the shelf. I didn't get any respect and more importantly, they didn't give my money back or give me a replacement tube. If ripping people off on tubes is the only way bike shops can stay in business these days, that deeply saddens me. Forget these stuck up jerks, take your business to FULL Cycle or Community Cycles. read more

I really wanted this to work. I did. But my money can't make them care. I brought in a bike needing a conversion to CO... regearing. Admittedly, the parts might have taken a while to arrive, but there was NO communication unless it was initiated by me. So I'd have to keep calling back, they didn't really thoroughly spec the job so they had to order parts AFTER the other ones were installed. So a relatively simple job took 6-7 weeks. Thank goodness I own too many bikes, so I had a spare to ride. I'm pretty sure they wanted to sell bikes where the margin is higher and faster, but I don't buy a bike until I know and trust their service team. Seems like they made this decision VERY easy for me. Update... I just dropped bike off at another shop in town for something else and they let me know that the mechanic improperly installed my crank ring, backwards and that it would have soon loosened and likely ripped through my carbon chain stay and ruined a 5 digit bike. Oh, and that rookie job came at full retail. read more

Sent my daughter to buy a bike for getting around Boulder. The staff were helpful and friendly and fitted her with a great hybrid (mountain/road) bike. It's worked out perfectly. This place is full of cycling elitist employees. I went in there with my kids one time, and they have kids bikes on the floor, my four-year-old hops on a bike and the person yelled at him for biking in the shop. I responded back telling the guy to chill out. He didn't like that much. Since I live in North Boulder, I thought it would be great to have bike shop close by. Come to find out they don't want to service the community at large, just those people that wear logo bike jerseys. read more

After doing almost all of my wrenching (bike repair) for years, I kinda hit the wall with the brakes on my cross bike. I could not get them installed correctly or in a timely fashion. So my favorite bike was sitting unusable. I finally had to do what for me is one of those really embarrassing things: take you bike to the shop with botched repair. I opted to try Boulder Cycle Sport. They seemed new enough that I would have a chance at being anonymous. Duane in the shop took my bag of parts, partially disassembled bike, and bruised ego in without batting an eye. Since it was a snowy day, he called a 3 hours later and the job was done perfectly for a reasonable fee. Rare to have a shop in Boulder that does not have an attitude and my experience with these guys was distinctly minus attitude. read more

I am an avid mountain and road biker chick and Boulder Cycle Sports is close to where I live. I thought I would give them a try: I was very disappointed to say the least ... I would have to agree with other reviewers when I say the place is full for cyclist elitist employees. If you are not a pro athlete (although I am a serious biker and race recreationally) and/or not in there to buy anything specific, they don't want anything to do with you. I got into a bike accident on my mountain bike (I fractured my scapula) and I could not ride my bike for a while. When I walked in there to look around for fun and possibly buy a new jersey (because my bike jersey was ripped up from the accident), one of the employees ask me: "Well, if you can't ride, what are you doing in here?" I was appalled!!! And if you are a woman (not a pro athlete woman), forget it!! And I would NEVER recommend this place to get a mountain bike. I got my mountain bike fitted and they did a terrible job (they fitted me as if I was riding a road bike). I then had them adjust the stem and they put the cap on upside down! I asked about that and they just shrugged their shoulders. They didn't care and they don't seem to have pride in their work. I usually say buy local, but Boulder Cycle Sport is an exception to the rule ... Other alternative places would be: Sports Garage (for buying road and mountain bikes) and Vecchio's (for road bike service). read more

This is a relative newcomer to the Boulder bike store scene. I went to the store on Saturday. Even though it was busy, the staff person spent time with me and helped me with bikes. But he didn't do any kind of bike sitting or fit. If you're going to be spending any kind of $$ above $1,000 I highly recommend going to a bike store that does bike sittings, like Sports Garage. If you know what you're looking for, and just want a good deal, I think this would be a great place to shop. read more

Boulder Cycle Sports was one headache after the other. I came in to get a new fork, and when they ordered a new one they ordered one that was not compatible with my front brake so they ordered a new one WITHOUT CALLING ME and costing me more money. They will order products without your consent and are also terrible at communication. My parts took 3 weeks to arrive from who they said was an in state supplier so I was always wanting am update. They won't call you about what is going on, even if you ask them too specifically. I even gave them my email telling me it was imperative they keep me posted. Still nothing. When I finally picked up my bike, the service employee just kept talking about how my bike really wasn't for me and I should buy a brand new one at there store. Yeah Right. I seriously have never been as dissapointed in a business as I was with the South Boulder Cycle Sports( I have no comment for the North Boulder location, I have never been there). Taro Smith and Brandon Dwight, the founders, should open their eyes to how awful the service section of the South Boulder location is. That's if they haven't lost enough customers to go bottoms up in a few years anyways. This is how terrible my experience was. Don't ever take your bike there. read more

I have lived in Boulder for 20 years and these guys get it. Some bike shops only cater to a certain group of people; racers, families, weekend riders, bike lovers. But Brandon and his team at Boulder Cycle Sport wows them all with the same gusto. They have done a great job with hiring the right people and bringing in bikes for every age group and ability. When they opened a number of years ago I thought, uh oh, another snobby bike shop, but that is not the case at all. I have purchased 2 bikes from them during the 7 years they have been open. I went up there to get a new saddle for my road bike. I was a bit nervous about buying a new saddle. I am new to cycling, and was worried about wasting money on a saddle that wouldn't work for me. Steven, one of the employees at Boulder Cycle Sport, asked me some questions about why I thought I needed a new saddle, and recommended I bring my bike in to make sure it was the right thing to change. I brought in in later that day, and we put it on a trainer set up in the back of the shop. The seat I had been using was much too narrow for my sits bones, so we replaced it with something wider. Steven had me ride on the trainer while he took some measurements and made some adjustments to my seat height and position, as well as flipping my handle bar stem over to get my hands a bit higher. All of this was free of charge! Overall, it was a great experience. Steven did a great job, and my ride is extremely more comfortable, not only from the new seat, but also from the small adjustments he made to my bike fit. He even brought my backpack out to me in the parking lot when I left it in the store. read more

I had a terrible experience at Boulder Cycle Sport North. I took my perfectly working bike in for a rear flat tire repair. Four days later they handed the bike back to me with a damaged dual-drive hub. Chris Flecknoe, the service manager, claimed I had damaged the bike by riding it without the nut on the rear axle. I told him that it wasn't possible for me to be riding the bike without that nut. I felt that Chris treated me like I was a stupid old woman who would believe whatever he told me. It felt like sexism and ageism. When I objected and told him I was there when the tech lost the nut and tried to force wrong nuts unto the bike which caused the damage, Chris got snarky with me. I had a new hub installed by Chuck at Freedom Foulding Bikes which cost $211.21. Then I sent an email to Justin Hoese, an owner, explaining what happened and asking to be reimbursed for the $211.21 repair. He refused, still claiming that I caused the damage and was less than pleasant to me in his email. Finally, a week later after talking to Chuck and being told that I could not have ridden the bike without the nut, Hoese paid Chuck. I was then refunded the money from Chuck. Never heard another word from Boulder Cycle Sport -- no apology, no accountability. I will never go there again. read more

Paid Boulder Cycle Sport to pack and ship my carbon road bike from Boulder back to my hometown through Bikeflights. I'll admit I was a bit wary of having someone else pack my bike to be shipped, but when I unboxed the bike after it arrived, I was very happy with the amount of protection and care put into correctly packing my bike! The $65 fee for packing and shipping was WELL worth it. Chris was very helpful over e-mail when I sent him my shipping label. Definitely recommend this shop if you need to have your bike packed and shipped. read more

While a couple years ago I would have agreed with some of the negative reviews about poor service/elitism at this shop, they've really turned it around. I don't typically take the time to write reviews, but the service was amazing enough that people need to be aware. I'm writing after having my bike stolen and building a new one with the help of BCS. Not only was everyone extremely knowledgeable and willing to take extra time to help me understand key concepts of new tech, they also spent a lot of time helping me resolve issues that weren't going to result in revenue for the shop. I annoyed these people on almost a daily basis for about 3 months during my build process and they always remained responsive, courteous and genuinely concerned about issues. I had a lot of questions and made a lot of mistakes, and not once did anyone respond arrogantly or not take the time to explain the issue and find the best solution for me. It is also worth noting that in the past this shop has seemed somewhat road-bike-centric. This also seems to have changed as they have people that are knowledgeable in just about every riding discipline. Thanks BCS - you're awesome. read more

This place is crap. They say they service custom bikes but they don't. I have gotten numerous comments from them saying that what I want is not possible or what I'm trying to do is basically bull shit. In the end I have figured out how to do everything they told me was impossible by going to other bike shops who are much more knowledgeable and affordable. Review is for SOUTH store. I came to Boulder from Mexico in late May to train for a high-altitude event in June. I took my bike into South BCS for a tune and left it overnight. Next day I got a call - the mechanic found a slightly bent derailleur hanger, tried to straighten it, and "it broke" in the process. Bike was unrideable, no idea when he could get a replacement part from their distributor (his guess was 1-2 weeks but his attitude was "whenever"). I told him my situation, and I was clearly distraught, yet his attitude was "whatever". I asked if the part could be FedExed, he told me I was welcome to figure it out on my own. After doing some research I found out the manufacturer of the replacement part IS IN BROOMFIELD and one phone call and a 25 minute drive and I got the part I needed. I told the tech at BCS that the manufacturer was local and he said yeah, he knew that (but of course never told me). Attitude: whatever. He never took any responsibility for breaking the part. He never once said "I broke the part" (it was always "the part broke"). He never once said "I'm sorry" that he broke the part. He had zero interest in my predicament or in even giving me the information I needed to solve my problem. read more

As with others I agree, elitist employees in the service department. Took a fork in to get installed and cut to 2.5 inches above the headset. When I came back the fork had NOT been cut! The service staff was generally inattentive. After remedying the situation they charged me $50. For that money I could buy the tools to do the installation myself... read more

I used to think they had a great service dept for maintaining my many bicycles. My last two experiences were bad. 1) I had new shifter cables put on my tandem. Clearly they forgot to lube the housing, as the cables are incredibly sticky, constantly popping from one gear to another. 2) I had new tube/tire installed on my single speed. Clearly they forgot to tighten down the bolt holding the wheel into the frame. The first hill I climbed the wheel wrenched out sideways, almost tossing me to the pavement, and then leaving me stranded in the middle of my commute. What happened to taking a repaired bike for a quick test spin around the block before you give it back to the customer with a potentially fatal flaw. read more

I love this bike shop and especially all they do for women cyclists. The shops and especially the restrooms and dressing rooms (super important to women) are clean, organized, and welcoming. Staff from the sales floor to the service shop is friendly, non-condescending (again important to women), and incredibly knowledgeable. A shout-out for the mechanic Wes, who gives DIY suggestions to help save $ but will correctly fix the problem if you need to pay the shop. I've had great deals on bikes, lovin' my Focus CX bike they sold me. RaeLynn is amazing in attracting women to the sport and store. She sets up events from fun women's nights, indoor spinning and rides to skill-improving sport psychology/nutrition/health seminars. Both locations have been awesome to work with. read more

If you need any bike maintenance in the South Boulder location, ask for Joe. He is SO helpful, polite and professional. My son and I went in to inquire about tubeless tires and a few other maintenance issues for his bike. One issue was a bit urgent as he is on the Fairview Mountain Bike team. Joe looked at my son's bike right away, explained to him how to evaluate the problem, and showed him how he was fixing it. He also took time to carefully explain how to install tubeless tires (which is quite a process!) and all the parts and tools he would need. It really made our day to interact with someone with such a positive attitude, and who obviously really cares about teens learning about their bikes. The prices were very reasonable, and although we may have purchased a few things a tad cheaper online (and would have had to wait), Joe made us more than happy to support our local store. I have gone in a few times since and Joe has always shown the same friendly attitude and helpfulness. He will not tell you that you need something for your bike that is not necessary, and will tell you about maintenance issues that you need to plan for down the road. I typically bring my bike here for service. I broke a spoke on my wheel. When I came to pick my bike up the service guy told me they put a black spoke on because they didn't have a silver spoke. I couldn't believe that they hadn't called me to see if that was ok. They said they "do it all the time." I asked the guys there if they would be ok with a different colored spoke on their bikes, and got a knowing look that they wouldn't be cool with it. The guy took a nominal amount off the price. Next time I'll be going to University Bikes. read more

Called in for help with an poorly shifting Eagle drivetrain. The staff helped me out the minute I walked through the door and had the problem diagnosed and fixed 10 minutes later. Very helpful and friendly staff. I can certainly recommend the store for service and tuning of your bicycle. Don't have any experience of buying a bicycle with them but they certainly seem competent. read more
