These clowns are just a mail order company with awful customer service; they are not an actual bike shop! I've spent tons of money with them over the years and was planning to drop between $8k-$10k on a new road bike with them but will never shop here again as I was just told "the manager said you aren't allowed to test ride any more bikes" lol. I was between sizes and had test ridden a few sizes of the Specialized Tarmac SL8 previously but returned to try the Cervelo S5 for comparison. Guess they just cater to people who spend $10k on bikes without riding them first. F*ck that and f*ck these jokers. This is exactly why people are leaving the sport in droves. read more

I am writing this in behalf of my husband who has been going to this shop for many years. My husband was treated awfully by a salesperson here. He was trying on cycling shoes and was taking his time deciding, as he should be bc it's an expensive purchase. The salesman told him he had 5 minutes and in a rude and annoyed manner. And told my husband that he's always in here and never buys anything. For the record my husband has bought several things here in the past and for someone to say these things to a customer is terrible. With all the cycle shops in Boulder, it is hard for one to really stand out. There is another shop Boulder that actually messed up my partner's bike on two separate occasions. Everyone at Excel is very friendly and GREG is the most knowledgable bike person I've ever met. He coached cycling teams for many years and fitted me perfectly on my new TT bike. He was super patient and explained everything he was doing for my individual goals and comfort. He also gave me excellent advice on nutrition and other ways to really bring my racing to the next level. Glad to have a go-to place! read more

These guys are the real deal. I am on east coast and needed some hard to find conti's for a trip in 5 days. Excellent, thoughtful and patient phone advice, combined with great prices. I called back just prior to ordering & they said they were in stock, but when I called a day later because they hadn't shipped they said they were now backordered:( Its not that they made an initial error, mistakes happen, but rather what they did in response. Online buyers beware. I purchased a Ritchey complete bicycle 5 weeks ago online. I got a great price and it arrived on time. However, the handlebars were a size 42cm, not the 40cm bars I ordered. I thought this would be easily remedied. I called my sales rep Phil and told him that I liked the bike but the handlebars were too large. He said he would discuss this with the shop manager and get back to me. I have called 3 more times, including one call to customer service, and I also emailed Phil and customer service. Three weeks later and no response. I have enjoyed getting good prices on tires and tubes from Excel but will no longer make online purchases because of their surprising lack of customer service. read more

This is a really nice cycling store! Yes, I said store not shop for a reason..their bread and butter is the showroom and having a huge inventory of merchandise (their website is great too). I have bought wheelsets, shoes, and all kinds of random parts from them. Customer service is great! The return policy is straightforward and nice. If you have a warranty issue they will help you out too. They really know their products as well. So why isn't this a shop? Well if I had a problem with something on my bike or wanted service I would not bring it here. They don't do walk in service and if you do want something done you must schedule it and the turnaround isnt super fast..they are good to install things if you buy it from them. Best prices in town but you have to know what you want. Look through their catalog or website before you go in to make it easier on yourself. I have had mixed results with their sale people with a few bad experiences, including buying my last Klein frame from them. They kept trying to sell me a new crankset when all I needed was a new bottom bracket. They tend to cater to the high-end buyer and it shows sometimes in their sales people. Edit: In response to Josh M. I bought the frame back in 1995 in the last year that Excel carried Kleins before the Trek buyout. It was the last Klein on the floor. Still have the receipt. read more

I love this place. My husband and I have bought various things here over the past several years, including power meters, bib shorts, and small random accessories. The staff doesn't follow you around the store desperately trying to sell you things, but if you have a question they are there to answer it. A couple of months ago, I realized I was kind of overdue for a new set of tires on my bike. Not wanting to deal with the mess of changing the tubeless tires myself, I called Excel and asked if they could maybe do it for me the next day. Their price to change the tubeless tires was fair, they had the ones in stock that I wanted, and they did it in like 10 minutes. FYI They'll recycle your old tires. read more

I went into the store at least once a week, with the same man at the front desk. It'll be your lucky day if you ever get him to crack the slightest smile or treat you with some respect if you happen to ask a silly question. I didn't feel welcome; I felt like I needed to know every little thing about bikes and what I wanted before coming into the shop. I recently got my first road bike and my boyfriend insisted they had the best gear and items that we'd need. The whole time I felt uncomfortable. My experience with Excel Sports in Boulder over the phone as a mail order outfit has been fine; however, as a straight-up bike store it was abysmal. Brought in a bike for a tune / build and ended up having to take it to another bike store to make it right. Mechanic competence at Excel is below average. (1) Couldn t make my 29er wheels tubeless. Both leaked like sieve, which didn t surprise the mechanic who admitted their in stock valve stem didn t look like it d work. (2) Couldn t tune my new SRAM shifters saying the chain often falls off in new 2x10 set-ups. (3) Cable to the front shock s lock-out on the bar wasn t tight and therefore wasn t operational. And I don t even want to get into the attitude I repeatedly got from the so-called former bike shop owner in Jackson Hole (?) that now works their phones and front desk. In all cases, a legit bike store corrected Excel s failures in short order. I wasted my $ at Excel and won t do it again - neither mail order nor in person. read more

Nothing worse than having an employee tell you "that's above my pay grade", ugh, seriously not ok. This shop has the worst customer service ever. From the day I paid to order a bike, I did not pester as I understand how hard it is getting bikes in, but when told it would be in on a date, I waited and emailed or called to get any update and there was no response, or I was told "I will call the rep and get back to you" which never happened, more than once. It is so easy to just respond and say "we don't have any info" than to have a customer pay in full for a bike and treat them so poorly. I was told it will be a week now to wait and get a refund since their bank is so slow. Warning, go somewhere else if you want any customer service. read more

With as many knockoffs that are on the market, I want to send gratitude to Excel for excellent customer service. My Kask Protone Special Edition helmet arrived within days, did not looked repackaged or tempered with and the price point was by far the best online where it ranged from $175-$299. Bought a Pinarello Gan S shipped to CA. Was hesitant at first for ordering a bike online. Other shops don't actually stock some bikes in store but their inventory is real time. They had a bike in my size and I ordered without a hitch. I received my bike in 4 business days. Easy transaction. Bike arrived well packaged with lots of bubble wrap. Purchased a set of DT Swiss RR585 online from Excel Sports. Wheels arrived on time in 4 days. The packages arrived nicely packed and absolutely true (had the LBS installed the cassette and did a once over on the truing wheel just to be sure). I have searched for the past weeks comparing prices and contacting online wheel builder to get a sense of their service and reliability. Excel Sports promised and delivered. The best part was after the order was placed, I received a call from Excel to valid the order. Having someone follow up with an online order gave the added confidence and security. Do some comparison on your own, the wheels came with Skews. Most online wheel builder will charge you an extract $60 to $100 just for them with Excel, they are included in the price. Their tires are also very competitive and I am saying "Amazon" competitive (Amazon Prime shopper here), might as well order the tire with the wheels if you need new tires anyhow. It's been two days since I have the wheels installed and I have already log in over 50 miles (with the sun would set later.....would have love to do a 40 mile ride). Nothing beats a sets of wheels that can increase your average speed by 2 mph. Happy Riding !! read more

We recently purchased new Cervelo road bicycles from Excel Sports. We shopped all over looking for a 61cm and a 56cm in either an R3 or S3 model with the Shimano Ultegra group set. We came across the Excel Sports website and they had listed, both of our sizes. So I sent them an email asking if the bikes were both in stock and if we purchased two, could there be any opportunity for a discount. I received a reply back from Drew stating he had them both and would offer a discount for purchasing two. In turn, I phoned Drew and he was very helpful in describing both models. During our conversation, I shared my anxiety and caution about having two high end bicycles shipped and asked if there was any further opportunity for an additional discount over what he already offered and Drew gave us even a larger discount than his initial offer. So, I said let's do it and get these babies on their way! Our bikes shipped even faster than what Drew stated and they were on the UPS truck in two days and here from Colorado to Washington in three shipping days! We carefully unpackaged them from the very well packaged boxes and all we had to do was put the handle bars on, mount the seat posts, put the front wheels on and air up the tires. No shipping damage and an outstanding transaction with Drew and Excel Sports. My wife and I have already made several rides and these Cervelo bikes are incredible! I called this shop regarding a 2012 Ridley Noah Di2 priced at $4888.88 online. Other major retailers (Competitive Cyclist, Back Country, Studio Velo, Cyclocross World, Real Cyclists) were selling the same bike for $3699.00, but Excel was the only one who had my frame size. I spoke directly with the owner who sounded disinterested by the way he addressed me. I asked if he would match the competitors' prices (who by the way were also offering free shipping), and he said he would only go down to $4500 and then proceeded to tell me that he paid $3600 for it. I offered him the $100 profit which is reasonable on a bicycle. This shop owner should be glad he doesn't run a car dealership where $100 profits on $30k cars are the norm. I restated that this would earn my business and give his shop more money in the bank, but he rudely brushed me off and hanged up the phone. read more

I was detailed in describing what item I was searching for, but was hung up on. As c.s. told me that "I will hang up on you." I was told that, because c.s. did not like me speaking in detail about the product that the mfr. not have; as Excel being a vendor of the mfr. So I did an internet search of another vendor to the controversial brand name, and called a selected vendor. The chosen vendor was more than happy to assist me, and DID give me the recommendation that I never had the chance to ask to Excel. I used to work near this place so it was very convenient for me to stop in and buy spare tubes there. These guys were the most unfriendly, elitist acting asses. They would idly chat with regulars while I waited for service. Every time I told them my tires size they would say they didn't have that size. I would tell them that in fact they did because I had bought them before. Guy at the front would finally roll his eyes and saunter to the back room behind the counter and come back with the tubes I had asked for, completely unappologetic about trying to send me away. One time one of them said "we only sell them in presta" after the typical charade, as if that were some sort of excuse for telling me they didn't have them. Unbelievable. I finally just started going way out of my way to other shops to stop giving them my money. The funny thing is, I'm sure they knew my bike was not some new, expensive ride due to the tube size I was buying so they didn't have the time of day for me. However, I now own several road bikes as I have gotten more into the sport and they WOULD HAVE gotten all my business with those big purchases if they hadn't treated me like crap in the early days. read more

I can't believe there are only a few reviews for Excel! I live in Boulder for 5 years and have since moved on. First of all, Boulder is a mecca of cycling and consequently has a plethora of excellent shops. With that said, few, if any, have the selection that Excel has. On top of that, I have always found the staff incredibly helpful and nice. Don't expect to walk in and find a ton or merchandise to fondle. The actual shop itself is quite small but the goodies are all in the attached warehouse. Just make a request and someone will have the product for you shortly. I know live in SF and the bike shops here, both from a selection standpoint, as well as a service standpoint are pitiful. Enjoy Excel and never leave Boulder! read more

Someone at bicycle village had suggested Excel sports for a short bike stem. I'm a Craigslist kinda girl. If I need a bike or a bike part that's where I look first. As soon as I walked into the place I realized that this was too high end of a bike shop for my comfort. I proceed to the counter and told them I might have made a mistake coming here, because I wasn't looking to spend a lot of money. The sales person was so friendly and told me that he didn't want me to leave empty handed. So he showed me the stem size that I was looking for, cut me a little deal and I was off with a nice stem. It was a Little more than i wanted to spend initially, but I walked away with a quality product for my Craigslist bike. read more

He took alot of time out to discuss all the different options and I stalled 3 times before finally purchasing the 2018 Cervelo R3 Dura Ace. David was simply amazing. Tyler in CS was excellent and the bike was packaged and shipped perfect. Not a scratch on it and was delivered ontime. They spend time customizing the bike for me at no additional cost.
