Located approximately 20-30 minutes outside of New Haven depending on traffic, the sleepy town of Wallingford even moreso than usual on a cold Saturday morning, it was nonetheless from down the block that one could recognize Neil's Donuts and Bake Shop, puffs of steam from several idling cars building up just past 7am and a fast-paced queue presumably there from open to close Tuesday through Sunday. Occupying a low-slung building at 83 North Turnpike Road since 2001, a surprisingly young age despite the décor and layout, it is upon arrival at Neil's that guests will find themselves greeted by an unpaved parking lot flanked by small stands of trees plus mud and grass, several folks forced to park on the fringe before entering a bustling space where a true greeting is unlikely, no less than six pairs of teenaged hands behind the counter busily packing up boxes and exchanging goods for cash. Old-school in terms of style if not age, nary a Cronut nor novelty save for ubiquitous Maple-Bacon Longjohns to be found, it was after perhaps ten minutes of trying to see racks around parkas and hats that the front of the line was finally reached, a young woman wearing her high school's sweatshirt carefully boxing six fried treats before placing five Italian favorites in a bag. Offering two small tables at the door, no locals keen on using them with almost everyone a regular intent on getting back home, it was with $12.57 worth of items spread out on branded napkins that tasting began by way of a Black & White Cookie coated in icing, the base itself a little crumbly compared to New York's best versions while the Rainbow Cookies dipped in a similar coat were dense and moist with subtle Almond flavor playing well off the Raspberry Jam. Next taking a look at Neil's eponymous item, a mix of Cake and Raised choices collected based on personal preference and customer recommendations, first bites of the Blueberry Cake ring yielded a fairly mild hint of Fruit amidst a good crumb while the Apple Cider version performed even better in terms of flavor and texture, the item produced when one asks for a "Buttermilk Bar" longer than most and too dry with a distinct lack of tanginess that makes one wonder if Neil's actually uses Buttermilk or if the clerk was mistaken. Moving on to Yeast Donuts, the majority of folks in line composing an order entirely of these, it was with a Streusel topped version torn in half that the center could be visualized as fluffy but fairly typical of boxed mix, the flavor perfectly adequate though a bit sweeter than the typical Crumb Donut while both a Strawberry frosted Circle and the version sliced and stuffed with Vanilla Buttercream were exceptionally sugary, the latter so much so that two-bites was enough with the rest discarded to prevent making a Powdered Sugar mess of clothing or the car's interior. read more

I have never been to Neil's donuts, I am afraid of entering, for fear of overload, but I've had the doughnuts plenty of times when co-workers bring them to work. They are pretty fabulous, and giant. I really enjoy the variety that they offer. I would highly recommend them, if you want to impress people. I am not a doughnut connoisseur, so take that with a grain of salt, but these are way better than Dunkin' Donuts. Also, I never had to wait in line, they were placed in my outstretched hand, so I did not have to do the work to get them! That may give other people more of a build up and let down....? They're good. I had some kind of boston cream and the custard was great. I would never pick a frosted doughnut, so I can't say if those are too sweet or not.... read more

Neil's is my absolute most favorite place to go for donuts! Despite having a gluten sensitivity, we will occasionally go in for an extra special treat that is totally worth the pain afterwards their breakfast sandwiches are super tasty too. You seriously cannot go wrong with their simple glazed donut, that one is probably my favorite. The staff is fantastic too! We have never had even the slightest of problems at Neil's. read more

Nobody can dispute the doughnuts here are amazing and they also make a great bacon egg and cheese on fresh bagels too. However the last 3 times there I have been disappointed. Twice in a row I was given the wrong sandwiches and didn't realize it til I opened the bags at home 15 mins away. Then today I paid cash and instead of getting my change the server put the change directly in the tip jar! It was only $1.80 change and I was gonna put it in there anyways, but really!? What?!?! You mean to tell me that I can ONLY give Neil's Donuts and Bake Shop, 5 STARS?!? This 5 delivery does not even BEGIN to showcase my feelings. As the reviews had mentioned, you WILL come into a line but it moves rapidly. Parking can get a bit sketchy based on the time you arrive but no worries, you will get a sweet spot. Upon walking in, they greeted me with a smile and I did not have to wait long at all before my order was taken. I arrived after 8am and now I am kicking myself because most of the extra baked goodies within the glass shelves were already GONE but I still had a great selection of donut flavors to choose from and so my order began; I grabbed up 6 donuts (Glazed, Pumpkin, Boston Cream, Jelly, Cinnamon and even a SUPREME DONUT that had buttercream frosting and jelly inside, along with sprinkles!!) basically, my box was on FIYAH and I was ready to put it out within a few bites. I grabbed up the jelly donut and she was THICKER than Duck Butter! Your jelly donut had ALL THE HEFT on it and I hit it with my finger press...all I felt was the softest of bliss within my fingers, that I already knew my first bite was about send me for a mental journey into donut heaven. If a promise of happiness came with every box, you delivered. The jelly was extremely fresh and had a divine sweetness, combined with the softest bite off a single donut that could be delivered as if it was made to order.......I followed this up with your Pumpkin and I am so glad about my decision to do so. Pumpkin Pie is one thing but a Pumpkin Donut from Neil's will have you in such a festive mood for the holidays for the flavor alone gives you a warmth throughout your soul, similar to what a nice cup of hot cocoa can do around Christmas. My favorites are Key Lime, Vanilla glazed, Raspberry Jelly, chocolate with Jimmie's, coconut cream, and vanilla buttercream. I had a very good iced coffee too. I am familiar with the Middletown location, but have had the donuts from Wallingford as well. All I can say is WOW! I'm a big fan of lemon filled donuts. Dunkin has pretty much stopped offering all but jelly donuts as far as my experience goes. NEIL's has a lemon filled donut that is a roll sized donut sliced in half and filled with lemon curd filling. Only warning don't eat it while you are driving. It comes in two varieties powdered sugar and chocolate, neither works for keeping tidy and driving. Other donuts are too many to mention but any I have eaten or taken to friends have been greeted with ohhhs and ahhhs and every crumb devoured. Delicious donuts. Treat yourself and enjoy. read more

OMG! I had the pleasure of trying some of these luscious donuts. These donuts are what dreams are made of......and this is coming from someone who usually passes donuts right by. I really don't like them always to sweet or heavy. These I could and um did eat more than one. Cute little shop with coffees, teas, donuts and various assorted bakery treats (cookies, several types and sizes of cannolis, etc). Friendly service also! We got 6 donuts plus a medium iced coffee for under $10. I'm kind of glad I don't live closer to Neil's because my body would hate me for it. Hands down the best donuts you'll ever consume in your lifetime. My go to a are Boston Cream and Glazed Sprinkled. The Boston Cream has an abundant amount of cream unlike every other donut shop due to the fact that they slice their donuts open and put a ton of filling! Excellent ratio of cream to donut, yum! I love local, family places like this! These donuts are so much better (fresher, higher quality) than Dunkin Donuts, and at a good price too. For about $10, we got three donuts, a sausage, egg, and cheese breakfast croissant, and a huge iced hazelnut coffee. When we first arrived at the shop, it smelled soo good, just like a bakery. We arrived around 8 AM on a Sunday and although it was bustling, the line was (I believe uncharacteristically?) short and it moved fast. I got a cinnamon donut and it was delicious, light and fluffy. My husband had a glazed that was more cake-y in consistency. The croissant was awesome, filling and good. The coffee was so sweet that we didn't need to add cream or sugar. A few tips: There is only one small table in the shop so plan on taking out. You may want to look up flavors beforehand and have an idea of what you want to order since everything moves so fast. There were so many tempting donut flavors and I barely had time to consider them all by the time we were ordering. I'd love to go back and try more sometime. read more

Donuts are good but their Wallingford location is bit dirty. I am giving them two stars unfortunately because they don't follow food safety protocols and best practices such as using gloves when handling prepared foods. I saw one of the workers in the back applying pink frosting to a donut with no gloves. That really turned me off and it's unfortunate cause I really like their donuts. Their ordering system is pretty chaotic in their Wlfd location. The staff in the front don't wear masks and yell over each other "can I help who's next". Customers don't social distance and it can get pretty crowded on the weekends to the point you can't see what to order when it's your turn cause theirs a crowd at the counter and they don't move. read more

I love this place. Anytime I want to splurge and have a donut I immediately come to Neil's. They're fast and efficient regardless of how long the line. Come early to get some of their top ones - Samoa, peanut butter, everything or jalapeño bagels, be smart and if you're getting a sandwich first and if they're slammed be prepared to wait for that sandwich. It's worth it though. I personally dislike cheese but they'll remove it if you remember to ask! The coffee is always fresh and any baked good is moist and delivers beyond on flavor. This is probably some of the softest donuts I've ever had. They definitely make a great donut! They have an array of options to choose from and all are equally as delicious. I opted for a coconut donut and a chocolate frosted donut. Neither were too sweet and both were just as incredible. My biggest gripe, this place is not for you if you are claustrophobic. Being the best on the block, Neil's is always crowded, no matter what day of the week. There is no organization, and be prepared to know what you want right when you walk in. There's no line really, it's more of a mob and people shouting out and trying to figure out how to pay. I've been told a million times over that this place is great. That generally makes me a little cynical. I'm happy to report that my cynicism was wrong. These are excellent hand made doughnuts. I suppose the only point off here is the customer service. It was very busy and counter service seemed a little aloof and cold. I don't know if everyone felt the same. As I was leaving, there was an older gentleman with a walker coming in, so naturally I said after you sir. As I paused, someone almost plowed clearly over the guy with his purchase. I was a little mortified. So they have an excellent product but I do wonder if they create a welcoming environment after my experience today. read more

You better know what you want as soon as it's your turn because this place is jam packed. I came on a Saturday morning and thankfully there was no line. I ordered four doughnuts and a coffee (~$9), although in hindsight I should've ordered more because they were just that good. I went for the Boston creme, cinnamon sugar old fashioned, glazed cruller, and regular glazed. The yeast doughnuts here are by far better - light and fluffy dough that is subtly sweet. The glazed was my favorite of the bunch. I'm not usually a fan of Boston creme, but I have to admit, this one was pretty good. They did not skimp on the filling, and it didn't taste like chemicals, unlike DD. The glazed cruller and cinnamon sugar old fashioned were good, but nothing to rave about. Wanted to try a coffee roll but they're ginormous. Maybe next time, seeing as I'll definitely be back. read more
