After a negative experience with the food, I decided to give this Black Bear Diner another try…read more This time I was with a family member. We were seated right away and our server was awesome. When the food came it was tasty and well done this time. My family member had one of the many cheeseburger choices and onion rings. I had the ham steak, eggs, and Belgian waffle. Everything came to the table hot and in a timely manner. The only slight hiccup was the ham steak, compared to other Black Bear Diners, it was on the small size. Interestingly, even though it was after 1pm on a weekday, all the parking spots were full and we needed to park in the overflow parking at the hotel next door. I am upping my rating from a 3 to a 4 and would be willing to visit again in the future.

I looked it up, it's one of those meals that's pre-portioned and reheated on-site1. Corn on the cob was ok, again, not fresh, was dry and not flavorful. Muffin tasted prepackaged, like it was frozen and was reheated. Everyone else got food that looked great. Wife got pot roast, my son got a cheeseburger that looked great. Pie was no different. Crust was not fresh, but chewy. Apples canned, not fresh. I'm not sure what happens to black bear diner. It used to be fresh, wholesome and flavorful. Service: It's under new ownership and I can tell. Service was ok. It was slow for 4th of July, but the server was ok, not as good as our last visit. Ambiance: Typical black bear diner: clean, with standard decor. As another drawback to new management, they don't have a liquor license. Not a big deal to some, but just pointing it out.

Another sign states that Betsy's has been serving this community since 1981. I was greeted immediately upon entering and advised to "just sit anywhere." I grabbed the first booth I encountered and was brought water and menu right away. The waitress took my order of a bacon cheeseburger and onion rings ($16.50). A few minutes later the onion rings of my dreams (super crispy on the outside and a real onion rings inside with enough crunch left that you can bite through without dragging a soggy onion out of its outer shell, so each mouthful is both onion and crunchy coating) arrived and a sandwich with crispy (not soggy, underdone) bacon, hefty burger patty (done just how I like them with carmelized edges and perfectly done thick center) with cheese, pickles, red onions, lettuce and mayo. I asked them to leave off the tomato due to my food allergies. The bun was soft but held up well to the heft of the sandwich. The decor was classic 60's style diner. While the seats were well padded and the covering looked practically new, some of the tables showed the wear of the years on the corners. There is also a short lunch counter next to the kitchen. What really caught my attention is the staff seemed to know most of the guests and greeted them by name as they came and went and inquired into different aspects of their lives. This personal touch reflects what seems to be a long-time relationship with dedicated customers. Parking is close to the door. This place was a little hard for me to find as it is behind the bowling alley at Tennant Station Shopping center, but was well worth the effort to locate and enjoy. I will be returning in the future!!

We finally decided on the chili verde, scrambled eggs, country potatoes with flour tortillas AND the eggs in a nest, with hash browns and bacon. Both were yummy yet I must say the chili verde and eggs were the favorite at the table. I have to mention the coffee was good and our mugs were always full. Betsy's crew was so friendly and attentive. From the moment we walked in, we were greeted with a smile at the door, seated timely and given time to figure out what to order. By the way, all the tables were full. Which immediately told me, we were about to have a fantastic meal. The restaurant was clean, ran smoothly and the customers all truly looked to be enjoying their meals. Can't wait to try the pancakes!

No lines and no crowds on a rainy day morning with plenty of available parking spots in the huge lot. Nothing attractive on the outside in this old popular plaza. The place turned out great with the old fashioned retro red color style interior and the experience was wonderful. Good vibes and positive feelings when walking into it. My lady server provided excellent service and the Hispanic male worker was quick and efficient. Place is clean and menu had good variety of selections. Breakfast is served all day while lunch items start at 11am. My breakfast was very fulfilling and total was $25.30 with everything included. I paid in cash and tipped them $5. Loved my sweet lady server. There was another older woman at the cash register. She's a local as well. I really enjoyed the stop. I had the Fajitas Omelette breakfast and the steak meats in it were very generous. Delicious breakfast exactly as I had expected. My onions green peppers potatoes were perfect with a side of salsa. Sourdough toast was delicious with the garlic butter taste. I really came for my favorite hot chocolate with whipped cream in the morning. I do miss big American breakfasts, especially in these old fashioned and traditional retro spots. Love it. Why didn't I visit this place much earlier? Because they're always busy or full inside and the plaza parking is usually congested with heavy traffic here. Overall, I love the vibes and the service. It's one of those places where you can just have normal casual conversations with the staffs working inside if you are open to it. Beautiful diner. Yes, I will be revisiting in the future. If you love huge food portions, there's great value here. One plate can easily be shared between two people. Nice.

After we ordered our food, I switched ketchup bottles with the table next to mine because I wanted a fuller bottle, and the fat lady worker scolds me - "hey don't just put an empty bottle on another table" with a snarky attitude. Hey you trashy haired lady, I don't work here, don't tell me what to do. Most of the workers are nice but that old bag had some self-righteous attitude. Seen it a few times before too, with her gross ass make up. If you're so concerned about the ketchup bottles why don't you do your own damn job and make sure they're full, you lazy cow. She kind of ruined my meal, but I'm glad to hear other people complain about her rude behavior. She's probably a miserable sack of potatoes that's mad at herself because she doesn't know how to put down the fork.

BREAKFAST STEAK AND LUNCH BURGER…read more I ate at City Diner twice. The first time was in April before going to the San Jose Fair Downs to bet on horse races. Before going to bet on horseracing I like to order steak for brunch. I ordered New York steak asking the steak to be cooked medium rare. After several bites I noticed the steak was cooked medium. Maybe it's superstition, but if I do not enjoy my steak I tend to lose at the racetracks. That's what happened at City Diner since the steak wasn't cooked to my preference as I lost money at the San Jose Fair Downs that day. I wasn't planning to come back to City Diner soon however i noticed one of the items listed on the burger section of the menu was corned beef burger. I've eaten pastrami burger before, but not corned beef burger. Also I love corned beef. I came back last Saturday for the corned beef burger. For $3 more instead of fries I requested onion rights. There is an abundance of milkshakes at City Diner. I asked my server and he recommended the "Groom", which is a mocha malt as it is his favorite. The "Groom" wasn't too sweet so I was able to finish it. The corned beef burger included slices of bacon. I was worried that the bacon would mask the taste of the corned beef as both bacon and corned beef are cured. I was correct as I couldn't taste the corned beef due to the bacon. Overall I'm glad I came here to eat for lunch however I do not see myself coming to City Diner anytime soon.

They have two locations--Watsonville and Santa Cruz--and we visited the Santa Cruz location. I also heard it's under new management, so I was excited to see what all the buzz was about. We arrived early for breakfast, but the restaurant was already packed. Every table was full, which is always a good sign! Even so, we only waited about 5 minutes before being seated, and everything moved quickly after that. The service was fantastic. Everyone was warm, welcoming, attentive, and our food came out surprisingly fast despite how busy they were. One thing I really liked was the daily specials board. There were several items that aren't on the regular menu, which made it hard to decide. I was especially tempted by the Orange Rolls and the Orange Poppy Seed Pancakes--they both sounded amazing--but I had been craving Eggs Benedict, so I stuck with that. I ordered the Chorizo Eggs Benedict with a side of fresh fruit, and it absolutely hit the spot. The chorizo added a nice kick without overpowering the dish, the eggs were perfectly poached, and everything was rich, flavorful, and satisfying. The portion size was huge, and choosing fruit instead of hash browns ended up being the right call because I was completely full by the end of the meal. I didn't get to try the hash browns, but my partner did and couldn't stop talking about how crispy and delicious they were. Overall, I can absolutely see why this place has earned such a great reputation. Great food, generous portions, friendly service, and a welcoming atmosphere make it an easy breakfast recommendation if you're in Santa Cruz!
