I have been searching for an honest and reliable mechanic for the past year. My search has ended, today I discovered Nam's Auto Service in Springfield around the corner from the Newington Costco. I drove past Nam's after I got my tires rotated and balanced at Costco. For my 2016 Honda CRV, I went into the shop to see if they could fit me in for a scheduled coolant flush. Lucky for me, Mr. Choi was able to accommodate me. I quietly stand in the corner to observe Mr. Choi while he works. His attention to details was amazing. I just requested a coolant flush, but he went through his entire checklist. He checked the tires pressure, brakes, fluid levels and even the air filter. I didn't inform him that I had an oil change a week ago at the Honda dealership. I also changed the air filter this morning. Talk about honesty and integrity, he could have given me a list of unnecessary jobs on my car. He passed my test with flying colors. Mr. Choi the owner/mechanic is courteous and caring to his customers. His prices are more than reasonable. I highly recommend this business. read more

I don't know if Nam still works here because everytime I come in for service on my car, he's never there anymore. I feel like the integrity of this shop has been slipping since he's left and Mr. Choi took over. Went in for a minor cosmetic repair on my car and Mr. Choi lied and gave an estimate of 1 hour to complete the job. From there I negotiated the price. He immediately pulled my car in and was done in 15 minutes and charged a huge markup. Why lie about how long the job will take to complete? Was ripped off. read more

Find anther mechanic do NOT use his repair service. He uses low quality parts and charges 300% for his parts. He left the radiator hose leak uncamp, radiator fluid everywhere. Nam rescued a 14 year old truck that I inherited from my dad. The dealership gave me an estimate of $7,000 to completely replace the truck's suspension, replace sway bars, brakes, etc. Nam did everything plus replaced my wiper blades for $2,500. He also replaced the struts on my Nissan after the dealership quoted me $880. I bought the struts online, and he installed them for me. Plus replaced my sway bars for a grand total of $423. I trust his work. He saves me big bucks. What's not to love? read more

I have a 2nd vehicle that is paid for and is nice to keep around for emergencies and if family comes in from out of town for them to use. It's a manual transmission and since I don't drive it regularly I started to notice that it would become stiffer and stiffer to shift. The car has 146K+ miles on it and has never had the clutch serviced. I called Mr. Nam as I've had him work on my cars in the past. I figured worse case scenario it would require a clutch replacement. I googled 'clutch replacement' for my year car and got a few ballpark prices about the same range and called Mr. Nam. Turns out he was half the price I had seen online. I took the car to him, he checked out the car & confirmed it did in fact require a clutch job. He quickly did the work even though I told him it was a 2nd car to me and wasn't needed quickly. The total bill was right in line with what I expected and was told, he was honest, quick and always very pleasant to deal with. It's hard to find a trustworthy mechanic but his team & him do great work at reasonable prices. Don't hesitate to take a vehicle to his shop. I will continue to do so with pleasure. I went to Nam's after getting into a fender bender. After the accident I looked over my car and thought everything was ok, but soon realized that my exhaust pipe was no longer securely attached to the bottom of my car. DO NOT GO HERE! Terrible experiences at auto repair places like this is the reason why I decided to do my own repairs and services for the past 10 years. We have a 2006 Scion with over 215,000 miles that we rarely drive any more but keep it in case of emergency, I probably took care of all the work that it needed for the last 150,000 miles of it. I am no mechanic but I can follow instructions and do what the car needed. Never had any issues besides the usual maintenance until recently when coolant started leaking causing engine to overheat. This time I felt kind of lazy to do the work myself so I took the car to Nam's Auto Service to have him diagnose the leak and see what the fix would have to be. He said it is the radiator leaking and that leak would be fixed with new radiator and hoses. Price was reasonable so we agreed to get it fixed. I picked up the car at night after the shop was closed and as soon as I started the engine, I knew something was wrong. Car was very shaky and rpm would dip constantly when idle. Also, driver side window button was not working. I immediately regretted not fixing the leak myself as this kind of experience is similar to what I had before, take a car in to a shop to get something fixed and it often comes back with more problems. Next morning I called Nam and told him about the issues, he said to just drive it for a day and see if car will settle itself down and bring it back in if it doesn't. I told asked how can you explain the new issues that just appeared after you worked on it. His response to that was it's an old car and it was "bad timing" that those issues appeared after his work. I am a reasonable person so I felt it could really have been bad timing. Decided to fix the issues myself, so the same morning, I went to Advanced Auto and got what I needed to fix the new issues. Reversing out of the Advanced Auto parking space and the engine shuts down, wtf... this has never happened before, hmm... "bad timing". Turn the engine back on, drive home to fix the car. I open up the hood and I find a dirty rag inside.... wtf.. F "bad timing", this guy is terrible! Removed the rag and worked on the car for about an hour and test drive. Car is back to normal, no shaking, no RPM dropping and window button working. Relieved now that car is all fixed, drive home and park. Smell coolant, look underneath the car and COOLANT is LEAKING! WTFFFF!! Coolant is still leaking from the same spot as before I took it in to it fixed. Back in DIY mechanic mode again, hmm... why is coolant leaking after radiator was replaced? I look at the radiator, I look at the leak, and took me 2 minutes realized the leak is not near the radiator. Now I am pretty certain leak was never from the radiator to begin with. PISSED, take the car immediately back to Nam's, he puts the car up and looks at the leak with one of his employee. Calls me over to look at the leak with them and he says leak was initially from the radiator and now this is a new leak. I tell him I know where the radiator is and leak was never from there, its not a new leak and it's from same spot as when I brought it in to get it fixed, look at the stain from the leak! His employee looks at the stain from the where its leaking and says "yea, that been leaking there for a while". WTF!!! If it just took them about 5 minutes to figure where the leak was from then WTF did they do before telling me to replace the radiator?! I did some more arguing with Nam but sensed that he will not take any responsibility for what happened. Told him to put the car down so I can leave, then I drove home and now I am writing this review. To sum up, took the car in to fix a coolant leak, paid money to Nam's Auto Service to send me home with new issues that I had to fix myself, YAY! Oh, and coolant is still leaking, YAY! YAY! This is the one and only review I have ever wrote in my life and I just want people to know about my experience. I'm sure experiences vary for each person but you will be F'ed here if you have "bad timing"... F "bad timing". read more

I used Nam's Auto last summer to change the 100k mile belts. Their price was about $300 less than another garage had quoted me. They did a fine job. So when my car started having issues I went back to Nam's. My car was periodically not starting. No turn over, no lights. Just odd. It would have to be jumped and then work fine. My out of state brother who has a lot of car experience thought it might be a relay switch or wiring issue. On a Saturday morning, I brought my 2007 Honda Mini-van in to Nam's. I told Nam this and he didn't seem to really listen to what I was saying. After about 15 minutes, Name told me that the a/c system, alternator and battery should all be replaced. This was about $2,000. He said he could work on it right then, too. I ended up leaving and saying I need another opinion given the cost amount. He charged me $90 for the diagnosis and said he would apply this to the full bill if I do the repair work with him. On Sunday, I brought my van over to a Pep Boys and they tested my alternator and battery - both were fine. Also the van kept starting fine. So the next day, it wouldn't start so I brought it over to West Springfield Auto Center. It was working fine there so I left it until it wouldn't start so it could be diagnosed. The next day it wouldn't start. West Springfield Auto traced the source of problem and it turned out to be a $45 relay switch. It ended up costing about $245 total to get my van repaired. I was shocked that Nam's would have had me replace all those parts. A few weeks later I called Nam to tell him about the real problem and he was defensive and did not apologize nor offer me a refund of my $90. I was very disappointed and don't feel I could trust Nam's again. I would be $1750 poorer if I went with Nam's advice. It has now been over four months and my van is working very well - thanks to West Springfield Auto Center. read more

My car was repaired by an inexperienced repairman who broke parts. Nam told me they wore out. Every time I bring my car to Nam's for an inspection it always winds up costing about $1500 largely for work that is not necessary such as brake job when the pads are not significantly worn. I would not recommend this place to anyone. read more

We had been getting service from Nam's for more than 15 years and its finally come to an end. In previous years, I enjoyed the service, but as I became more knowledgeable about the inner workings of an automobile, I learned that the shop is not as good as I originally thought. My brother had an issue with his 2007 Hyundai Tiburon. At approximately 20 miles and hour it would experience a hard jerk before switching to the next gear. He brought the car to me to get my advice. I'd been working on cars as a do-it-yourselfer for about 7 years now and consider myself pretty handy, but not a professional. I diagnosed the issues as a transmission issue and got my brother prepared to lay out some money to fix the issue. I recommended Nam as he worked on at least 8 of the family owned vehicles since the late 90's. My brother went to Nam's and diagnosed his car with failing struts and sway bar links and charged him $800.00. I did not challenge this since I'm not a professional and bad suspension components can cause this type of issue. I had my doubts since the jerk would occur almost exactly at 20 miles per hour. They kept my brothers car overnight and he received it the following day. My brother's car drove well for about 24 hours before the same jerking occurred on or about 20 miles per hour. I insisted that he take it back to have it looked at. This is where things really get ridiculous. Mr. Nam insisted on driving it for a day. After do so, he called my brother back stating that it was the transmission that caused the bump and it would cost $2600.00 to replace. Having really no choice and needing to get back on the rode, my brother forked over the money and paid for a new transmission. He received his car back several days later only to have the same jerking issue. After taking the car back for a third time, he admitted he forgot to "reset" the code. Since then the car has worked as it should. Having worked on cars now for nearly a decade and understanding the plight of the auto mechanic, I consider myself a reasonable and objective observer. If you take your car here, I think the work performed by the staff is usually good, however they are awful with diagnosis. Although the hourly rate is cheaper than most other shops, you will find yourself paying more fixing the initial mistakes they make. Also, do not expect an honest answer. If he imbellish the truth after working with him for more than 15 years, he is likely to straight up lie to a new customer. They don't listen very well and I'm not sure if the communication is lost in translation as English is not his native language. Overall, very disappointed in what this shop has become. The good news is I was able to located another reputable mechanic who is great with work and diagnostics. read more
