We were driving home to NC from DC on I-66 when the lights on the dashboard of the 2006 Honda Ridgeline pickup we borrowed from a friend started flickering. Fortunately, we were able to exit on Nutley St and pull into the parking lot of Safeway. A Google search and Yelp led us to AK Auto Repair. Mr Kim was willing to stay open a bit late, to give the tow truck time to hook up the truck and pull it to AK Auto. Mr Kim quickly diagnosed it as a problem with the alternator. The next morning, he called us shortly after he opened to confirm the problem and gave us a quote to replace it. Based on what we had read, the quote was reasonable, so we accepted it. Shortly after 10:30 he called us back, saying the truck was ready. So we took a Lyft from the motel where we stayed and were back on the highway by 11:30. Such prompt service for people from out of state is extraordinary. While we would have preferred not having the alternator die and having our return home delayed a day, we are thankful we were led to the exceptional service of AK Auto Repair. I have to admit I live really close to AK Auto, but never took my car here (despite recommendations from 2 friends) because I always thought I could trust the dealership. Boy was I wrong! After my car started revving without accelerating at about 2000 RPMs, I knew there was something wrong and drove the car over the dealership. They told me I needed a remanufactured transmission, which they would be happy to put in for $8200. This didn't sound right to me since my car had only 75,000 miles on it and I always did all recommended maintenance on my car when I was supposed to, so I decided to get a second opinion. I had my car towed to AK Auto and asked Mr. Kim to take a look at it. He added transmission fluid to the car (at his own expense) to see if it would make a difference and it started running more smoothly so he knew that the problem was not the transmission was not the problem. He recommended that I get a transmission flush. I was hesitant since it was so different from the advice that the dealership gave me (I'd just gotten a transmission exchange at the dealership 4,000 miles ago, plus they said the transmission flush would make the problem worse). But I reluctantly agreed. The transmission flush made all the difference, and now the car runs like butter! From now on, I'll be taking my car to AK Auto! read more

Other places overcharged me and had surprise pricing, but the owner was extremely transparent about the price and got my car back to me in 3 hours! My 2012 Maxima failed it's safety inspection at another auto shop due to a flashing airbag light. I suspected it being an electrical issue rather than an actual airbag malfunction. I took my car to get diagnosed and Mr. Ki was very prompt with service. He hooked my car up to the computer, looked under the passenger seat, jostled the wire harness and the blinking airbag light turned off. The service, diagnosis, and resolution were stellar. The entire process took no more than 15 minutes. I was charged $120 for this. Based on this math, Mr. Ki charges $480/hr for labor. I was expecting to pay for service, of course, but the price was exorbitant and in my opinion, unfair. I wanted to give this garage a chance based on the positive reviews and proximity to my home, but this was a one and done for me. read more

I was looking for a mechanic that can just do an oil change for my car using my own oil and filter. I'm very picky on what kind of oil I use so I just don't have time to do it myself. I called around a few places and this place was the cheapest. For only $25, he was willing to do it and that is what I was paying back in the bay. They were also able to do it same day when I called them so that was nice. The only thing is that he had some issue getting my car on the lift because my car is lowered and needed to get on ramps for the lift to fit under the car. I was afraid he would scratch or dent my car as they tried to physically lift and push my car but thankfully none of that happened. read more

Since Fall of 2023 his staff has gone down hill. While Mr. Kim is knowledgeable about cars, his new staff are screw-ups. Twice now I've gotten my car back and found things forgotten, missing, not re-connected, dirty or with new minor damage. No one is quality checking the repairs and it shows. I won't be going back. I've brought my cars to AK Auto for almost 20 years. Mr. Ki, the current owner, is happy work on them and repairs are fairly priced. On two recent repairs I noted the quality of the workmanship isn't as good as I would want. For example, AK fixed replaced my brakes but failed to bleed the system meaning the pedal was spongy. I had to get that redone (which he did gracefully). Also, he over-torqued my lug nuts meaning I could not change a flat tire without calling (and waiting for) a wrecker. Amazing service! They gave me the least expensive workable option and told me "you could spend the $1200 to replace the the part, but if it was my car, I wouldn't. It doesn't affect the driving or safety. We'll take of the rattling sound and make sure there are no issues". These dudes are awesome! I had to get my rear brake rotors and pads changed . Was quoted $850 at one place . They got me out the door with a brake pad and rotor change for $480. Mr. Kim at Ak Auto is located on lee Highway and Nutley St. He provides amazing honest service in short amount of time. The shop is not fancy looking with only 3 car garage. However he gives 10 star service and out does all the dealerships,with no nonsense & fair pricing. These guys are the most honest, affordable shop that I know of in the DMV. They did great work on our van after my wife had a little run in with the garage door at our house (don't ask). After shopping around the price and repair time to fix the horn of my Lexus, I went a dealer and other service stores for estimate, they gave me estimates of $400 to $500, stating that I need to replace two and takes a couple of hours or a day. On the way to dealer to replace it, I stopped by A K Auto to compare for the last time. Out of surprise, AK Auto told me I need to replace only one horn and gave an estimate of $125, so I told Mr. Kim to do it. He replaced it within 15 minutes and charged me only $125 as he estimated. When my car decided to nap out on me I decided to hit up AK because of all of the positive reviews seen on Yelp. My review is based on friendliness/professionalism of service over any actual repairs because after checking out my car for a couple of days I was informed that both the transmission and hybrid battery needed to be replaced. (OUCH!) Welp the obvious solution is to get a new car so I slapped down my $50 evaluation fee -which I'd consider fair for a couple days diagnosing the battery and transmission- and went home to cry over the grave of my car. I only deduct a star because it was difficult to get in touch with Abe in the two days that they had my car. It's a very small operation and I can see how they'd be busy with their tasks out in the garage and miss a couple of calls. Mr. Kim is fantastic. I know these days many people worry about honesty in their mechanics. You can put that worry to bed here. By my own doing I broke a small fitting on the radiator on my Audi. I live in an apartment, so pulling off my bumper cover to replace a radiator wasn't going to happen in the parking lot. I brought it to AK ready to pay over $800 for the new radiator. A dishonest mechanic could have charged me for the radiator and I would have been on my way. Mr Kim called me around 11am the same day I dropped it off to tell me it was ready, no radiator necessary.
