I am always interested in helping independent businessmen. I have taken my car to Kim for a number of years and trusted his service based on my previous reviews. Unfortunately I had some brake work done and over the course of a year or more I would drop by as they would squeak. Every time Kim would say no mechanical problem. I also took it to him for a 100,000 mile check, again only a oil change needed. My wife, very skeptic took it to another independent mechanic with a great reputation, and sure enough I had a slew of things wrong with my car. All problems were documented with photos. Brake issues, and oil leak, etc....not even the filters were ever changed. Thousands of dollars of things that built up over the years. I know the pandemic has been hard on his business but we are talking about my family and safety is a priority. I wanted to give them a shot due to all the high ratings.. I went in for an oil change...came out with a belt repair and new tensioner. I don't doubt i needed it. But I quickly discovered the tensioner and repair was not done properly, the belts became very badly worn because of this. The wrong bolts were used and it cost me $200 plus dollars to fix this repair. Sorry...can't recommend this place. I should have gone back and made them fix it. Unfortunately, when the next mechanic was undoing all the bad repairs....I had no faith that AK would actually fix it properly. read more

The shop doesn't look like much, with just two bays in a little squat building on Lee Highway and an office full of repair manuals on battered old furniture. If you're used to a dealer service department that offers marble floors, free beverages and internet access, you might find it a bit off-putting. However, I have always found this shop to be scrupulously honest and unbeatable on price. When other shops have told me I need dubious-sounding work done to my car, this is the place to go for a second opinion - they've saved me hundreds in repairs this way. I even got to the point where I trusted Abe, the owner, with helping me make the decision to get rid of a problematic Chevy Blazer. After several visits for random things he told me, it was time for the Blazer to go. I asked him for his recommendation on replacement and what he thought of Hyundai. He said, "I don't see many Hyundai... So that should tell you they are very dependable. Get a Hyundai.". GREAT ADVICE! I'm continuing the 5-star trend for AK Auto. So, last Saturday my car began overheating in Fairfax, which is of course is what I wanted to have happen on a Saturday when I am 20 miles from home. After filling the car with coolant I noticed that it began gushing out of the radiator, I wasn't sure if it was a hose or a wrecked radiator. Thankfully I my wife noticed the AK Auto was open across and we drove it there. Technically Abe and crew were already closed, but they took a look anyway and took my car in. This was important because i couldn't drive the car home and wasn't sure what shop I could take it to and drop it off. Waiting another hour for a tow truck would have been a drag too. So I left the car with Abe and hopped home on the Metro. In addition to turning the car around quickly, I had asked to look at the tranny dipstick that I thought needed to be repaired and he said "no, that's fine, see?" That's a few $$ saved. read more

Jan-Feb 2013. Just had back-to-back jobs done at AK Auto and I had good experiences both times. My old car had a funny idle - felt like it was going to just up and die every time I was at a red light. I took it into AK, told them to drive it a little and feel the idle for themselves, and then see what's up. They diagnosed the problem as poorly gapped spark plugs - an easy fix. I was impressed because they charged me only 9/10 of an hour. It would have been super easy to just round up and bill me for the full hour, but they didn't. And I think that speaks to their honesty. A month later I was back b/c the ABS light on my dash came on. It turned to be an electrical problem and, according to Abe, it took quite a bit of detective work to figure it out. But they eventually found it - a faulty relay in the ABS electrical system. Abe explained that a replacement relay was a hard-to-find part, and so they repaired -- rather than replaced -- the relay. I was impressed by that as well. Not many shops repair parts these days - if a widget goes bad they just replace it with a new widget. But this is the second time Abe has repaired a faulty part for me - at a significant cost savings! I couldn't help but wonder how many other shops, faced with the same situation, would have insisted they replace the part and, being that it was hard-to-find, charge me and arm and a leg for it. read more

I went to Abe a few weeks ago with my car, was making noise in the rear left wheel area from inside the car going over 55+mph (seemed like a wheel bearing issue). I called a couple Subaru dealerships and got responses ranging from "bring it in, we'll do an assessment, sounds like an AWD maintenance issue, could cost over $1000 dollars" to "have you done our 60,000 mile maintenance? it costs $900, schedule it during the week"....and pretty much had enough of that. This was my first time to AK Auto, went purely on the reviews and the fact that it's walking distance to my house. 1. He did a great job and gave me an honest assessment of the problem. Wheel bearing issue in the rear left wheel, no problems with AWD system as far as he can see. Replaced the wheel bearing in 4 hours for $300. 2. He did a great job of explaining the issues, explaining what he found, and gave me potential risks I could run into in the future. 3. He just wants to do a good job at his job. I appreciate that. Understandably it's only been a few weeks and it could not have solved the entire problem, but I'm happy to go back to Abe and get his assessment on the issue. Highly recommended mechanic in an industry where it's very hard to trust mechanics. read more

I personally don't know a lot about cars, so when it comes to car inspections/services, I always get headaches. After reading all the reviews, I decided to try them for oil change and 60k interval service, both experiences were wonderful. Compared with all the other places I've been to, AK charges much lower prices and they always explain what they're going to do with your car before they do it. He's run computer scanned in my car one lights come on and watch it determined that it was just a loose gas cap charge me nothing. AK Auto was top-notch under Abe Kang and still is. Abe's chosen successor, Kim, is as expert and helpful as Abe was. Recent example: When squirrels chewed the wiring of our power steering motor, after diagnosing the problem, Kim found the dealer would sell only the entire assembly ($2700). Rather than leaving us to deal with that, he took the initiative and immediately found an excellent 2d hand replacement at a very reasonable price, saving us over $2000. read more

My husband and I recently took an aging vehicle to AK Auto in hopes that AK would be able to resuscitate our vehicle at a fair price. We chose this particular mechanic because he was highly rated on this site. Originally, I took my car to another "emissions certified" mechanic who quoted a price of $160.00 to fix a side mirror (actual cost = $28.00 for the mirror + 45 minutes to watch the YouTube video on installation, pick up the part and install the part myself) and $40.00 to replace wind shield wipers (actual cost $12.00 + 30 minutes to buy the parts and install myself) and $600.00 to figure out why my engine light was on. They told me the actual repair could cost me thousands and I was sure they would find a way to charge me that much. AK fixed the engine light issue and made several repairs, including replacing a serpentine belt, for just over $600.00. My 10 year old car now runs as if it were almost new. A good, honest mechanic hard to find and is worth his/her weight in gold. Mr. Kang is honest and kept us informed on what needed to be done and got the work done in a day. Wow! Mr. Kang also clearly loves what he does and makes an effort to educate his customers on how best to avoid repairs. read more

I had a pre-purchase inspection done at AK Auto, based on the strength of the Yelp reviews it had received. I was very pleased with the service and the price. AK Auto had a surprising amount of sophisticated equipment they used to test the 2011 BMW that I brought in. The BMW turned out to be in good shape, and AK Auto charged me less than the already reasonable amount they had quoted me- they said the inspection was "too easy" to charge me full price, given the condition of the vehicle. Based on my experience with them thus far, I will plan on driving from Germantown MD to Fairfax to get my scheduled maintenance done here. My 2010 Honda Insight started making loud squeaking & grinding noises. I took it Bill Page Honda but couldn't get in without an appointment. I drive by AK at the corner of Nutley and Rt 50 every day on my way to work and I remembered their sign saying they specialize in Japanese. and European cars, so I decided to try them. I walked in and explained the problem to the owner who immediately took my keys to go for a drive. He traveled no more than 10 feet before diagnosing the issue - a problem with the little part that measures break wear inside the wheels. "Not a big deal" he said. "How much to fix it" I asked. "Not much" he replied. I left the car, hung out at Starbucks and Baja Grill across the street, then returned a few hours later. The car was fixed for what I consider a very reasonable price - under $400 for the repair and an oil change and a new battery I had them install at the same time. Very refreshing to know there are still honest car repair shops around. I know where to go for all my Honda maintenance in the future. read more

AK Auto replaced my struts with questionable parts (obvious rust damage and chipping on a supposedly brand new part), which did not even fix my original noise problem. After taking the car back in they refused to repair the car or replace the parts and therefore my problem was never fixed. The car still squeaks incessantly over bumps. The prices here are extremely reasonable, and the owner never attempts to sell unnecessary service......something unheard of today. They can diagnose any problem on both my European and Japanese model vehicles, and their repairs are high quality. The other day, I had a tire mounted, all four tires rotated, and asked them to repair a stuck seat belt which necessitated removal of the back seat...all for a very low price. You can't get other shops to give you 5 minute on board diagnostic assessment for what they charged me the other day. I've brought my car in for a timing belt with no appointment, and they've knocked the job out all in the same day. I'm a loyal customer and will only take my cars here. This place is great! They are helpful, efficient and overall wonderful to work with. I had a dead battery, and went to AK, they changed my battery in 15 minutes! We also go to them for regular tune-ups and oil changes. The last time we went for an oil change, they noticed our inspection was running out in a few days.
