Kim, the owner, is temperamental, rude and inconsistent in the price quote. When I came for oil change, he gave me a quote for parts replacement. A few weeks later, when I came by again, he gave me a different quote, 50% higher than before. I remind him that his new quote was 50% more than what he said. He lost his temper and yelled at me, saying "I double my price now, or ,,,,,,,". Such a ridiculous owner. behaviors like spoiled kid. read more

I visited this shop to have a caliper/rotor/break pad replacement. Soon after leaving, I noticed an unbearably loud squeaking coming from my recently replaced equipment. I drive around for a few days hoping it would go away but it didn't, so I returned to have it serviced. After about an hour of test driving and inspecting, the diagnosis was that the break pads that the shop initially installed were generic and not specific to my make and model (2003 Chevrolet - nothing crazy). I was told they would have to order new brake pads that were specific to my car's fit and to come back in a couple weeks for a free install. This was over a month ago. I haven't received any follow up from them as promised and whenever I call, they keep pushing back the date saying they haven't received them equipment yet. I even purchased my own brake pads that are a fit for my car (from advanced auto parts) and took it to the shop to have them put it on, but they declined, saying I would have to leave my car for the afternoon. I ended up installing my own brake pads and remedied the squealing, but the entire interaction with Kim's Auto after my initial install has not been considerate or professional. Nam Kim's small auto service shop is just plain excellent. Mr Kim might seem a bit gruff at first, but he's a really nice guy and would never oversell you or rip you off in any way. I don't even ask him how much it will cost to fix something anymore - I know he'll charge a reasonable price and trust him completely. The first time we took a car there he opened everything up on an old Honda and told us the timing chain was fine and didn't charge us for checking it out. I took my 1998 Dodge Ram 1500 to the shop for replacing and installing ABS Speed Sensor which was difficult to find. The part was located at a local dealership but the labor installation cost was prohibited, especially given the simplicity of the repair. I contacted Kim's Auto Service Center, Centerville, VA, for an estimate. The owner immediately indicated he could make the repair which was deemed to have been a fair price. I left the vehicle with him and within a short period of time. I received a phone call from the shop indicating the vehicle was ready for pick up. I drove to the shop and paid the bill. I drove off the lot and I noticed the ABS Speed Sensor brake light was still on. Upon, returning to the shop, I asked why the indicated brake light was not reset. The owner called out the mechanic who made the repair and he advised he didn't reset the light without explanation. The mechanic started speaking in his native language which was not readily understood by me the customer. I walked out. I got into my truck and drove to the nearest service station for the indicator sensor light to be reset. The owner was very accommodating. At this point, it would be difficult for me to return to this place of business based upon my initial expectation and experience. Hopefully, the owner will regain control of his employee's disrespectful behavior and ensure his future customers are treated with the upmost respect at all times. I am maybe in minority here, as most reviews are excellent, but I still feel like I need to pass along my experience. I went for an oil change over the weekend to Valvoline in Fairfax and by the time I got back home, I had a light on my dashboard, which at that time didn't know meant "tire pressure". The next day when attempting to run to a store, I noticed my front tire was totally flat. My first instinct was the oil change and them refilling the air in my tires had to cause that. I called them but they said I would need to bring the tire and they would be happy to check it for me. This is when I researched this place and called. Kim asked me to come in as he could look at the tire right away, which at that time was in my trunk and I was on the spare tire. He examined the tire and said the pressure sensor was damaged. In the meantime, I also asked if he could look at my windshield washer as it wasn't spraying. He did and said I needed to replace the pump, even though, while talking to the other mechanic, he said it was disconnected. He said it was from the time someone hit the front bumper of my car, which made sense because I did run over something about 6 months ago. It all made sense and the story was checking out. He called for the parts pricing and quoted me for the pressure sensor and windshield pump at almost $300. At that point I didn't have time to have those done right away and I also wanted to give Valvoline a chance to look at my tire and correct the issue. Kim charged me $30 for examining the tire, so I left with $30 less in my pocket and nothing resolved. I went to Valvoline and left the shop with: my tire fixed (only the valve stem needed to be replaced and not the pressure sensor which I was told was very expensive, but it didn't need to be replaced) and put back on, windshield washer pump was only disconnected and needed only to be popped right back in ($0 cost), a pair of new windshield wipers and some bolts replaced. It all cost me less than $75 to actually fix the problems (with some extras), while Kim charged me $30 for taking my time and giving me false information and pulling his numbers out of thin air. I am sorry but I will never be giving a chance to the small shops like Kim's. It makes it so difficult to get repairs done, when you have to get multiple quotes and band backwards not to be taken advantage of. It is sad but that is the reputation this industry has. The Valvoline in Fairfax gave me hope for an honest and excellent service. They have my service for a lifetime. Please do your homework before committing. read more

BE CAREFUL FEMALE DRIVERS, don't bring your car to him. At first I trusted him based on my friends reccomendation. First of all he lied that he fixes GERMAN cars, I have a BMW, so after I got my car, I was like how come the "service light" still on can you reset it? Their answer was NO WE DON"T HAVE THE MACHINE. I'm like but you said you have it before I agreed to bring my car in. But whats next is whats ABSURD. 10 min into driving out my car signal "WARNING do not drive more than 15miles/h" When I called back immediately and ask what's going on. He was non chalant about it and said "look everything is fine it's late and I don't work on weekends usually so you can leave your car here if you like and i'll take a look at it tomorrow." Cut the long story short, I HAD TO TOW MY CAR TO A CERTIFIED BMW DEALER (go to Autowerke by the way I highly reccomend) and it turned out that KIM forgot to sscrew one part and I was driving on LOOSE SCREW WTF? I could have died!! When I confront KIM about it, not only was he angry (mind you I should have been the one angry because Im paying double), he was not sorry, wont give me my refund, and yelled at me for going to another COMPETENT dealership saying if he fixed it it would have been ok. This man in unprofessional, cuts cost, lies to customers, and something I would not trust my car or my families car to fix. read more

You know, i'm surprised that there are not more reviews of this place as it truly is a hidden gem. I've been to this place twice, once about 2 years ago and just as recent as last month. My first experience was when I had an issue with my cooling fan and radiator. I drove in and Kim asked me to leave it there for a couple of hours to evaluate. When I came back, he let me know that this was something that they wouldn't be able to fix themselves but outlined for me in detail what does need to be done. He said my best bet was to go to the dealer. Not too many places would turn down business but he gave an honest evaluation which ultimately did help me negotiate with the dealer although still expensive. With this experience in mind, I went there last month to have a check engine light code evaluated. He confirmed what I had suspected and gave me a quote on the spot. I needed an ignition coil that needed to be replaced for one of my cylinders. Since he was going to be in that area of the car, I also asked him to quote me on replacing my spark plugs, which were actually due at that time. I had called a few places but none of them wanted to give me a quote without charging me a $150 diagnostic fee which is on top of whatever the charge would be for repairs. I had the code pulled at Autozone for free and scoured forums to determine there was a high probability of it being the ignition coils. Kim was able to figure this out in just minutes and confirmed the error code. I mean it literally took 2-3 minutes. I went ahead and had him change the spark plugs as well going off the quote he gave me on the spot for the last minute decision. I had quotes at home from earlier in the year but couldn't remember the cost off hand so went ahead and gave the green light. As soon as I got home, I checked other quotes and to my happiness, the quote I got from Kim was extremely competitive, i.e. much cheaper than what I had been quoted at a few other places. What a great feeling that is! The work was done in a timely fashion and about a month later, the car is humming well. My experience at Kim's was as easy as it could be and I left there actually not feeling cheated like you do at almost every other place. I will absolutely bring my car back here for any future repairs that may be needed. Hopefully not for awhile though! I give this place 5 stars. How could you not when you find a mechanic you actually trust. If you're looking for a trust worthy mechanic and competitive prices, look no further, this is the place to take your car! read more

i called this place based on some good reviews. Mr. Kim picked it up quoted my a very inexpense price which I was happy about. But then when i asked him if had worked on lexus cars, he did a 180 and started literally yelling over the phone saying "i've worked for 15 years, what do you think!? how can you even ask me that!" His attitude gave me a scare along with the fact that his price was half of the other 10 shops I called. I would beware in that he might be cutting corners to pickup business. Asked for an estimate to have a/c repaired and front axles, brake pads and rotors replaced. After getting the estimate, I was told there would be a $50 charge if the work was not done there. Kim's was well recommended. Prices for some items were less and others only a bit more than prior estimates from elsewhere. Decided to have the work done by Kim's. Something happened to the clutch while at Kim's. Mr. Kim and I had a robust discussion over a period of more than two weeks about how to handle this situation but we did finally come to an agreement. New to the area, I looked to Yelp to help me find a reputable auto service shop for my aging MDX, and once again, Yelp comes through! This is a very honest shop - here's my story: Mr. Kim replaced my timing belt for a very fair price, and all was good. Fast forward a couple of months, and I noticed the gas mileage on my car was dropping pretty quickly, so online research suggested maybe I need new spark plugs and other fuel related maintenance. I asked Mr. Kim to do the maintenance and explained why, but he looked at everything and said I don't need spark plugs at all. He suggested a couple other things on the car that may be failing, but again said 'don't fix or replace yet. Wait til the check engine light comes on, then we'll diagnose for sure. Don't spend the money now. Your car is old, the gas mileage drops.' I agreed and thanked him, but then I called him back and said "Let's go ahead and replace xyz now rather than wait for a light." He assured me it's ok to wait, better to not spend the money now. Let's be clear, the item I asked him to replace would have been close to $1000 out the door. And this after he already advised me I don't need spark plugs, which any other shop would have just replaced and charged me, since that's what I brought it in for. So here I am practically begging him to take my money, but his best advice was no, nothing to fix right now. How many times have you had a shop encourage you NOT to replace stuff? Especially on an old car, I'm an easy sell because it's just expected stuff will need to be replaced and repaired, right? So he has definitely earned my trust. I bought some tires at a big-box store recently, and the man who changed the tires said I needed new brakes all around. I always take my car to Mr. Kim to get his opinion when I hear things like this. After his inspection, he told me my brakes were almost new. No charge for the inspection. A year or so ago I had a muffler replaced at Midas. They told me I also needed steering ball joints, which could be taken care of right away for a mere $400 each. They even went so far as to take me out to the car and show me that the ball joints were loose and were moving all around. When I took the car to Mr. Kim he told me that there was nothing wrong with the ball joints -- they are supposed to move all around like that. No charge for the inspection.` The air conditioning compressor went out in my car, and knowing how much those can cost I asked Mr. Kim for any help he could give me on getting the repairs done for less on my old car. He found a used compressor that worked just fine until I sold the car more than 5 years later. The cost was about 30% of what I would have paid at a dealer. read more

It's rare these days to find an honest and reliable mechanic, but I believe I did in Kim's Auto Service. I brought my Audi A-6 to Kim after an unpleasant experience with Audi of Tyson's Corner (see separate review.) Kim gave me a reasonable estimate (substantially below Audi's) and performed the work promptly. When I had a subsequent problem he urged me to bring the car back immediately and he and his chief mechanic spent 1 hour and 15 minutes checking the area thoroughly, tightening everything and eventually fixing the problem. Kim wouldn't charge me a penny for this. The car now runs perfectly. read more

I am thankful to Mr. Kim and his Auto Service Team. His business is conveniently open on Saturdays (bright and early, beginning at 8AM). In April 2011, his team fixed my brakes. The car dealership offered to fix them, but they would have charged me $350. But Mr. Kim and his team fixed them for $149. The brakes work fine. My father has always believed in the quality and reliability of the service and team at Mr. Kim's auto service. He also believed that their pricing was great; it was hard to find other service teams with such good pricing. He started being a customer of Mr. Kim's twenty-five years ago. Although in that time he moved down south to retire and I moved to Rockville, Mr. Kim's Auto Service is still as honest, reliable, and with reasonable pricing today as it was twenty five years ago. And I am willing to trek 30 miles for auto repairs. I appreciate Mr. Kim for maintaining his business with the same principles as he always had. read more
