Easily the best shop in the area and one of the best mechanics I have ever been to. I have been going there for about three years now. There have been times that I have taken my car in to them swearing that work needs to be done (used to work on my cars a lot when I was in my teens) and they would check it out and tell me,"Nope, everything looks good." About a year ago my alternator started to go so I took it in and had them replace it. Pick it up a day or two later and go on about my business. About a week later some warmer weather hit and I noticed the A/C wasn't working. Called Tim up, and he assured me that even though he was really busy he would get to it. Sure enough, he checked it out and the A/C not working was due to a connection on the new alternator. He fixed it, no charge. I also had a wheel bearing replaced there back when I first got my car. They replaced it and it started acting up again 15 months later. Even though I was three months out of their "shop warranty" they still fixed it, free of charge. I have more stories like that about these guys so I won't keep going on. I won't go to another mechanic for 50 miles. read more

I can't tell you how glorious it was to get back in my vehicle with the AC working! The AC compressor (self diagnosed) went out in my 2020 Chevy. I was quoted astronomical numbers elsewhere for the repair - HRM did it for almost half. They confirmed my self diagnosis and completed the work within a few hours. Was just looking for a shop for my vehicle when I remembered HRM. I used them about 25 years ago and they were outstanding and honest then. They fixed my transmission problem and gave a list of other things that would need repair in the future. They suggested that the vehicle probably wasn't worth putting the money into fixing all of that. They did not charge me anything extra and the transmission problem turned out to be just replacing the fluid. They are best shop I've ever used. read more

I was driving on a flat tire and pulled over on the side of fairfax country pkwy in the pouring rain at 9pm today. I did not have the correct tools to put my spare on, but Ron who works at HRM pulled over behind me and asked if he could help (it was very obvious me and my boyfriend were having trouble changing out the tire). Ron made a quick run to the shop to grab something to help and he came back so fast. My spare was put on in less than 3 mins. First of all, HRM has saved our family thousands over the years. One time when our Subaru Forester 2011 was at the dealer for a warranty repair, the dealer said that we needed an additional $1200 in maintenance. Wanting a second opinion, we took it to HRM and they said uh-uh. You only have $190 in repairs required. The other things the dealer listed are all in great working order. Recently, November 2023, we took the same Subaru mentioned in because we could smell burning oil. We'd had a similar issue before because Subaru doesn't use actual gaskets on the seals. This time it was leaking from the cam covers and a small leak in the timing cover. In order to repair these, they had to drop the engine. While the engine was removed, they assessed other systems and conducted necessary repairs. Since the engine was already out and we didn't have to pay for that service more than once, they saved us a lot more. They noticed, for instance, that the clutch was over 75% worn. I'd already noticed 2nd gear slip occasionally and eagerly took their recommendation to replace the clutch and flywheel for the cost of parts since the labor was the same. We've been driving the vehicle for a month now. Not only do the shifts between gears run like when we first bought the car, but all the oil smells and other quirks we'd been experiencing are gone. They restored our car and effectively erased 12 years of use. This is just one story about one of our vehicles, but they have touched all four of the household's cars at one time or another and each and every time, they honestly assess the car and perform only the repairs needed. I can't tell you how many times they've sent us home with no bill saying we didn't need whatever service or repair we thought we needed. Do business with these honorable mechanics. HRM Automotive is fantastic! My regular car dealership after changing my oil, etc., said my brakes are at a critical point and the mechanic recommends they be repaired/replaced. That my four tires should also be considered to be replaced. I was asked if I could hear anything while braking, no I didn't. And I had two tires replaced less than a year ago by this same business. I had a gut feeling about not moving forward with these recommendations, they entered on my paperwork "customer declined " which felt they were pushing their own agenda. Thank goodness I went to HRM Automotive in Springfield VA! They thoroughly examined my brakes and vehicle, my brakes were in great condition, recommended flushing out my brake fluid, a bit dirty. Super place - Fixed a dealer brake screwup. Details: told dealer at 60k service had brake noise. Dealer said brakes had "plenty of wear left" and passed state inspection. 1k miles later noise got much louder, stopped at HRM on a Friday afternoon, talked to Ron. HRM inspected, found brake completely worn off ( to metal) got pads, disc and fixed in 1.5 hours. Probably saved me a brake failure and accident. Can't thank these guys enough! read more

The HRM stands for Honest, Reliable Mechanics and they are just that. Imagine an auto shop the way it should be and you'll have HRM. My wife and I discovered them through customer postings on the Car Talk (Click and Clack) website about 2 years ago and we've been loyal customers ever since. It has been our experience that they have very reasonable pricing and will only advise you to fix what needs to be fixed with no extras added in as recommended service unless they're required. My reasoning for such a claim is that they have more than once advised us to hold off on maintenance that we requested. They gladly perform the service if we decide to go forward with the maintenance anyway but they give us the opportunity and information to make an informed choice and not over-maintain our cars for their profit. This place is incredible. My husband randomly found this place and has been a couple of times for regular maintenance. I recently got new tires at Walmart and they has a huge sign that said "Walmart does not check tires for safety". Um, red flag? I googled the type of tires and saw all good reviews, so went ahead with the purchase. Though there were no issues after the tires we installed, with the holidays and unexpected weather season coming soon, I'm not one to take chances. I mainly communicated with Kevin, who answered the phone when I originally made my appt (which I eventually cancelled because I wasn't able to drop by car off). I called them last minute and asked if I could just come in and wait. He said he'll make it work and allowed me to come in 30 minutes after that call. Seriously?! Can't get better than that. I arrived and was greeted by Kevin again, who was (again) very nice and courteous. I was there 15 minutes tops, he even asked me if I wanted something to drink. He came back and told me that they lifted the car and checked the gauge (I have no idea what this means :/) and he said everything looked fine. I asked if I need to check out or anything and he said "nope, just make sure you come back again". Wow! Do you know those other dishonest companies out there would have taken advantage of an unknowledgeable gal like me, but not these guys. I drove in here with some small trepidation. The building is old but well cared for but the look and feel of this place isn't "slick" and I love good marketing. As soon as I walked in the door however I was greeted professionally and enthusiastically by Tim. He made me feel welcome. I was in and out (needed headlamps replaced for my TAHOE) within 30 minutes. We had another very positive experience at HRM. They are indeed honest and reliable mechanics. We brought our 14 year old Toyota Sienna into the garage. There were noises every time we braked. We were worried that the brake pads were worn and that the calipers were cutting into the rotors. HRM's mechanics found nothing wrong with the brakes. The brake pads were only halfway used and had plenty of wear in them still. They did not advocate replacement of brake pads or anything else to boost up the bill. They could have easily recommended a litany of repairs and adjustments but they did not. Another garage might have come up with a list of reasons to pad the cost but HRM did not. Instead, they charged $58 to cover labor. In short, we were not hornswoggled! What a pleasure to find that this shop lives up to its name: honest and reliable. Update: I took my vehicle to the dealership the following weekend. Complete brake work on both rear tires to include rotors, pads, and brake line flushed for total cost of $640 (the brake flush was $180). So, If I didn't get the brake flush it would have been only $460. Where HRM a few days earlier exaggerated issues with my vehicle to include needing calipers and gave me a quote of well over $1100. I have many years of going to dealers and automotive shops for a variety of cars and it DOES matter if you're a woman - until HRM Automotive. My sister and I went to HRM in November 2013: Mine for an overall vehicle check and an oil change and hers for a second opinion on a shaking issue. I have been a loyal customer of HRM (Honest, Reliable Mechanics) for over 15 years. They have been my "go to" mechanics for a variety of cars, Audi's, Hondas (sedan and van), Buick, and Subaru. The staff, especially Bill at the front office, and Tim, the head mechanic, are extremely personal, and are willing to patiently explain the procedures and pros/cons of different alternatives. It is trite to say it, but when HRM conducts routine maintenance or repairs it is done right -- I can't remember even once having to have it "re-done." They never push you on what to do - they explain the problem and offer solutions, some long term, some short term (unless it is a safety issue of course). But even more than being reliable, I have great trust in their honesty and integrity. For example, some 10 years ago our Honda had an emissions control problem -- but instead of just fixing it, Tim suggested I take it to Honda because he thought they had a recall on it -- I did, and his advice saved me over $600. More recently, my son's Subaru failed the emissions inspection, which after considerable diagnosis was traced to two problems -- a gasket on the fuel pump and an emissions canister. Tim ordered the canister, installed it and because the canister solenoid was defective it "blew" the car's computer. All the cost of getting the new canister, the computer, re-programming the computer, and test driving it for the emissions inspection HRM provided at NO COST. Less scrupulous mechanics would have charged for all these additional services -- so much for HONEST. I wholeheartedly recommend HRM -- try them once and you will be hooked. So much so that even though I recently moved to North Carolina, I still take my cars bac to Tim and Bill for repairs/service. Give them a try.
