I became sick of all the auto shops overcharging for their services or charging for services not performed. I left my previous mechanic because of this constant attempting to overcharge me. I was so happy when I found Merv's. I thought they did good work and were honest. I was wrong. I brought my car to Merv's for service. I provided my own materials. My bill should have been around $30-$40. I was shocked when I looked at my bill. It was more than double what it should have been. I asked why it was so much. Merv, who was sitting in the front office began to squirm and told me it was because a wheel balance and tire rotation was performed. I immediately asked if it had actually been performed. I did not request that to be done. Rather than correct the invoice, Merv asked me if I wanted a credit. Really? You overcharge a customer and then ask if they want a credit. I was told that I had already received a discount because I provided my own materials. So, to recap, buying my own parts and not allowing a shop to overcharge me for materials is considered a discount. That's interesting....what Merv calls a discount is called fraud under Virginia state law. Buyer beware. The attempted gouge was far more expensive to Merv than he imagined. Today's a day when bad things turn out Good! Got a flat tire on the Honda Civic. There was a screw in the tire. I took it to a tire dealer in Springfield. They wanted $36.00 to repair it. When I had an oil change completed by another auto shop, they indicated engine oil was actively leaking from the passenger side of the vehicle and that I should have it checked. The dealership would charge me $183.00 just for a diagnostic check. I took it to Merv's and in less than a day, they checked for the leak and did not find anything unusual. They ended up charging me nothing for the evaluation. This is an incredibly reputable, reliant and trustworthy auto shop. He deserves a huge shout out for fixing all the different issues my car had- and informing me of other issues that could arise in the future. We decided to fix the problems that take priority first. I took my 2010 Honda Accord to Mervs in Lorton Va. They told me that I needed 2 catalytic converters. They charged me $2600 for the work. I had to bring the car back 3 or 4 months later. Same problem.The catalytic converters.Once again They said they fixed it. A month later the engine light was on(P 420 code) same problem again. I spoke to Merv on June 14 2023.He informed me that he would not warranty the 2 catalytic converters.Have me some BS excuse about oil. I hate to write this as I'm really shocked at the "F.U" treatment I received after years and years of patronage. Car shops have such bad reputations, you can't help but rejoice when you think you've found a "keeper". Until.... they prove that you're just a gullible stupid "punter" (punter=customer) and the cliché is proven true. We had been to Merv's for OVER 10 years and... he's done pretty well by us. To keep a long story short, we had the original VW factory Control Arm bushings replaced by Merv's at the end of 2013 (Odometer 142,201- original - they last a long time!) Not the Control Arm mind you - just the bushing/s - just enough to be confusing. Job quote $450+. (bushings cost approx. $30 - Control Arm WITH bushings $100) **Note: To replace the bushing you have to use a press and remove the whole Control Arm. It's a huge pain so just replace the whole fixture for $100 with bushings. It is a no brainer - see later** These rubber bushings are good for years - they're suppose to be replacing the original factory with 140K on them. 7,600 miles later (od 149,801) - we're buying new tires due to worn out bushings - the bushing that should be new are obviously still the originals seen back in 2013! After a while (month) I recall that the bushings should be new (paid $450+) from Merv's and return the car asking if he could complete the work probably missed in error. (Trusting eh!) (so we're running $750 at this point with $300 in front tires) He palms me off with "you've probably done a lot of miles" (8,289). He agrees to check it out and returns the car in few days (enough that you'd think they'd done something) and I like the loyal "idiot" punter takes his word and drive off. I'm "SO" trusting I don't bend to take a look (they're really easy to see)! I could kick myself. 3,363 miles later (od. 156,676) ANOTHER set of front tires ruined (yes - the original VW factory bushings/control arms are still on the car!) (Running $1050 now) Tires are usually good for 30-40,000 miles for those missing that. They never did the work - twice! (waved me out the door happy as clams - probably had a good laugh about it too) With this POS car we were there all the time - we felt like old friends turning up month after month --- so you realize how despised you must be for the complete "F Yu!"- just as long as you pay the bill and know s*** about cars and don't check the work. Happy ending: I ordered new control arms with bushings ($100) 1AAuto and installed myself in 90 minutes. Never done it before and with amateur tools Total: $1150 plus all the past hours at tire shops, awaiting Merv "repairs" and finally the D.I.Y. . Would it have killed them to do the job and keep me as a customer? Check the photos of my old bushings at supposedly 11k miles old. Do you think the work was done? Of course not because they're the original 1999 VW bushings from the factory - LOL - all the way to the bank! There's an yelp review I posted years back (filtered) so you can see how things can be. One of the negative side effects of being "discovered" via Yelp, is that a place may find it difficult to maintain its high level of service and quality due to increased business. I've been going to Merv's for YEARS and I've also referred customers either in person or through Yelp. However, my most recent experiences have not been positive. I used to be able to get an appointment in a few days, but now it takes at least a week before I can drop my car off. And when I did drop my car off recently, the usually friendly technicians were hurried and curt in their demeanor. A few weeks ago, I dropped off my car early in the morning due to a whirring noise from the front-end and also because the car was sluggish when braking. Around 11am, I received a call indicating that Merv's diagnosis was I needed to replace the wheel bearings on both front tires, and I need to have my brakes cleaned. Okay...I thought the wheel bearing may need to be replaced, but I was shocked at the price I was quoted -$850!!! I also was told because they were so busy, that if I wanted the work done, I would have to tell them NOW otherwise it would be a few more days before they could get the parts and schedule the work. Wanting a second opinion, I declined the work and told them I'd pick up the car after work. When I arrived around 6pm, I received something I had never previously gotten from Merv's...that hard-sell! One of the techs mentioned that driving on bad wheel bearings was extremely dangerous and that my tire could fall off, and that paying $425/tire for such work was what other garages would charge me in the area. But the kicker was when he said, "Merv HIMSELF drove the car, and this was his expert opinion of the problem". I once again, said thanks, but just put the tires back on the car and I'll be on my way for a second opinion. I'm glad I did, because thanks to one of my Yelp friends who recently referred me to her trusted mechanics, they performed the needed work for only $550! I wouldn't necessarily give Merv's a ZERO star rating since they did correctly diagnose the issue, but shame of them for such an egregious mark-up. But lesson learned for me, because this time I am NOT going to write a review of this new mechanic; but I'm sure in time, they too will also be discovered and experience the "blessing" that is Yelp notoriety. read more

If Merchant's or some other bait-and-switch shop tell you your car needs urgent repairs now and they can work you in right away, say no thanks, buddy, and let the guys at Merv's take a look. They will tell you the real story, which will be a) you don't need the repair or b) we can do it for half the price or less. Just be prepared to leave your car a few days. It's worth it on big-ticket repairs. Honest shop. Here is a good example. My door handle snapped off on my Toyota RAV4 with over 200,000 miles on it. All I want is for the thing to open again. I don't really care about aesthetics. A new door handle or new door would have cost me big bucks but Larry at Merv's came up with this creative solution in photo while doing a brake job and didn't even charge me. read more

I drove around for a couple weeks with the tail pipe making noise because I didn't want to deal with car repair places and knew that my dealer would be charging outrageous amount to replace the tailpipe and muffler on my 2008 Honda. A friend highly recommended Merv's so I made the trip to Lorton from Arlington to check them out. Wow - was I impressed. Everyone was friendly & helpful. I got an appointment to take my car in a day later & was so happy when Scott called to let me know I didn't need to replace anything [altho I was given the option of waiting for the part to be ordered and returning later ... and of course with a higher cost to me]. Instead, I could have Merv's excellent mechanics/welder cut out the section of rusted areas and weld new plates today - a real plus with added benefit of a significant savings! So disappointed.... Avoid coming here. After all the good reviews I had read of Mervs, I thought I'd try them out. Man I experienced the complete opposite of good service. I brought my car into Mervs for a check up and was immediately shoved out the door as quickly as possible. The customer service I received was atrocious from the man at the front desk. They didn't even listen to the problems that I was having with my car. The next day, I received a call at work from Frances and was then verbally ridiculed because I did not answer the phone the first time that he called me. Sorry Frances, I have a job. He proceeded to tell me that I needed rear brakes put in and that would solve my squeaky wheel issue. Funny thing is, the squeaky wheel was in the front. I picked the car up, in which the car was NOTICEABLY running poorly. It was working great when I brought it to them, just had a squeaky wheel.... I took the car home, did all the work myself and fixed the issues that Mervs had somehow caused AND fixed the squeaky wheel issue. And funnily enough, it wasn't in the rear wheels like the mechanics said. They were trying to sell me unneeded services. Every time I called after receiving the car and asked if I could speak to Merv or if they could explain why my car was running poorly after their services, the man at the front desk gave very rude responses and never allowed me to speak to Merv. All in all, when you take a car to a mechanic you expect friendly service, GOOD work done on your car, and not to be sold on services that you don't need. Which is the absolute opposite of what I received. Absolutely will not be coming back. read more

When we first heard of Merv's I expected to find a bunch of reviews. So I was very surprised to see that the last review was done almost 3 years ago. I'm a little reluctant to post a review because I do not want anyone else to go here. We heard about Merv's from my wife's coworker, and right before we headed over a neighbor recommended them as well. My wife's VW bug needed what we thought was a major tune up and oil change. After it was there a few hours we get a phone call telling us that it does not need a tune up; that everything looks great, and they don't even think it needs an oil change. Well, we told them that we wanted the oil change anyway, and that was that. After work we went down and picked it up. Which by the way, they are one of the few shops that are open late during the week. Most shops close around 5 which really sucks! Any how, this place is pretty great, and we will be taking all of our vehicles there from now on. read more

I like that they give you honest recommendations about everything, and answer all my questions, covering all different perspectives from factory recommendations to real world use. I've found the prices to be a bit high here, though not as bad as a dealership, but I would say it's worth paying for honesty and quality work. The reception/waiting area isn't what you may find at fancy dealerships, so I recommend that you plan on not waiting around the shop for your service. I have been getting my car serviced and fixed here for the past 20 years. In fact, I can remember when this garage was front facing Old Keene Mill Road. Merv and his team are a great group of skilled mechanics and they have the experience to tackle any type of mechanical issue for all different makes and models of cars. Over the years, they have always been respectful with me, an dIhave never had any issue with their customer service. Most recently I had the starter replaced in my 2001 Dodge Van. I felt that the repair cost was probably a tad higher than other places. However, I'm certain tha tthe quality and the expertise of their work was well worth it. My husband and I have been coming here since 2009. We've taken our vehicles to other places for piecemeal work from companies like Jiffy Lube and Meineke and have had to come back here for Merv's to fix what those guys have messed up! Merv's replaced my brakes after Meineke did shoddy work on them. Merv's fixed my transmission after Jiffy Lube wrecked my transmission after messing it up after a transmission flush. Merv's took care of my husband's headlights after they failed inspection. The repair shop at the inspection station quoted double what Merv's did the work for! I won't go anywhere else. read more

I've been a customer of Merv's for almost 20 years, and for good reason. The value and customer service has been fantastic. These guys are competent, honest and customer-oriented. This place is a real gem. A couple of examples: in 2005 I had a minor accident in which the rear axle of my Honda CRV was damaged. I looked around for ways to get this fixed, and Merv's game me the best solution - obtain a used axle and parts from a junkyard, rather than brand new parts. That saved me about $2,000, and the replacement parts have performed perfectly for the past 14 years. Second, in 2007, the air conditioner compressor in my Honda CRV exploded - literally. Merv's told me that yes, they could replace it, for about $1,500 - which was consistent with the costs I saw online. Merv's - specifically Larry who still works there - also told me, however, that Honda was having problems with its AC compressors, and suggested that I check with Honda about having them fix this problem, even though the warrantee on my 2004 CRV had expired by then. I did check with Honda, and they agreed to fix my AC compressor at no charge. So - in this case, Merv's referred me to a solution which cost me nothing, instead of taking on the work themselves. In this and other situations, it's clear that Merv's approaches each customer's situation from the customer's perspective. Wow. In a variety of auto service needs over the past 20 years, among a variety of vehicles, I have always found Merv's to be efficient and cost-effective. This is a family-style place.
