If you're in Brenham and want to avoid eating at a chain, this is a decent option. We both had sandwich combos...mine was a sprouts and avocado sandwich, which was tasty and about what you'd expect. I also had the broccoli cheese soup and it was not the best I've had, but maybe average? I also got a slice of the buttermilk pie, which was melted and falling apart. It tasted okay, but there may be better pies to try there. I'm a snob when it comes to pie, so I'm less inclined to enjoy it from restaurants than from my mom's kitchen. There were a ton of flies buzzing around constantly, which was pretty off-putting. We had to cover our food with napkins, which is really annoying, especially if you're eating indoors. Set-up is confusing...apparently you order your sandwich but then stand at the counter and wait for them to make it with their backs to you. I didn't actually realize right away that they were up-to-date with orders (there was a really long line), and I needed to wait there for my food before sitting down. I was on a day trip in Brenham. Our tour guide had chosen this place for lunch. It turned out great as we were 15 and ordering at the counter made it easy to pay our bill. They have lots of pies on display as you wait in line to order. I had the half-avocado with tuna. You choose a side which can be fruit, soup or caesar salad. And it includes a drink. Their iced tea is great as they have sweet and unsweet, and other flavors. They have fresh sliced limes and lemons for your drink too. Service is quick. You pay and move toward the end of the counter where your food is delivered promptly. Why did I take a star off? I think my caesar salad had bacon. I'm pescatarian. I didn't feel like going back to the counter to change it. Caesar salad is not supposed to have bacon. They should state that it has it on their black board. The salad should also be served on a bigger bowl. It's overflowing in the dish it's served, making it hard to eat. And I was going to choose the broccoli cheese soup but it has chicken broth. Wanted to like this place. I have always wanted to stop and try it and finally made it in and what a let down. The pie was nothing to boast about it and the filling was lacking something,was definitely off. We ordered a strawberry malt, chocolate shake, and a root beer float , nothing fancy and had way better elsewhere. The service was also very disappointing, the young girl with braces at the register was so rude. We told her chocolate shake and we were brought a vanilla shake. The receipt did have vanilla on it but she made the mistake since my husband did order a vanilla root beer float. The woman at the counter told me her favorite was Bourbon Chocolate Chip Pecan, so I got a slice of that and a slice of Coconut Meringue pie to go. Both were delicious! My favorite part of the pies were definitely the crust, it was flaky and buttery and addicting. Don't waste your time! We were passing through and thought we would check them out. Buy your Blue Bell from the grocery store. You would think they milked the cow, pasteurized the milk, and made the ice cream themselves. My teeny tiny shake was $5!!! They didn't add enough milk, so it wasn't very good. Horrible service! Several people cut the line, the staff saw them and served them 1st anyway. Pray you don't need the women's bathroom. I ordered the chicken salad 1/2 sandwich, with a Caesar salad as my side and a slice of bourbon chocolate chip pecan pie. The chicken salad was really good. The Caesar salad was odd. It tasted fine, but there was some type of additional crunch other than the croutons, and it was in every bite of my salad. I couldn't figure out what it was. I did not finish the salad. The bourbon chocolate chip pecan pie was really good! My friend ordered pimiento cheese with broccoli salad and a slice of buttermilk pie. Whenever we're in Brenham we always like to stop by this place. A business that I was told has been in business for 30 years! Wow. I remember bringing my daughter here when she was a toddler. She's out of college now and a working girl! This place has not lost its charm and the sandwiches are as good as ever! Save room for dessert because the pies are heavenly and next door treat yourself to some bluebell ice cream! On my quest of trying many of my new hometown of Brenham, Tx. I finally made it down to this place. As always starting with the service not really much to say because it is all counter service. Though I will say that unless you are a regular here figuring out where to order was a bit confusing given the counter is hidden from view from the only entrance. I only was able to figure it out when somebody else came in and I followed them. I will also state that I was a bit disappointed that it does not appear to have a working old style soda fountain which seems to be the premise of their advertising. From the large number of menu selections I decided to go with the Reuben sandwich which is one of my staples adding to it a bowl of broccoli and cheese soup. The broccoli and cheese soup was tasty but I could use just a little bit more broccoli. The Rueben was pretty good but didn't make make my very high bar though to be completely honest my expectations is that bar will never be reached as it was set many years ago by Old World Delicatessen in San Antonio Texas which is no longer open. My main issues with this sandwich was the kraut which could have had a stronger taste and they use Thousand Island dressing instead of the traditional Russian Dressing. This is not uncommon though. Though these dressings are closely related they are not the same with Russian being spicy with horseradish and ground mustard while Thousand Island is sweet with sugar and none of the aforementioned ingredients. We arrived around 11:15, everyone had already pre-selected their sandwiches/salads to make it easier for all involved. Solid lunch served up in a well run charming restaurant in downtown Brenham. This sandwich shop does a hustling business. We arrived at lunchtime on Friday to a large line but were pleased that it moved quickly and there were plenty of tables. Their menu is mainly sandwiches, soups, and salads which you wait at the counter for after placing your order. They were very quick with the soups and cold sandwiches but didn't have much space for or people prepping the warm sandwiches such that the people in our party all got their food at very different times. The BLT I ordered had a good amount of bacon but hardly any tomatoe such that I actually had to deconstruct it to make sure they hadn't completely left them off. They offer a bunch of delicious looking desserts but both the ones we ordered were disappointing. The bread pudding wasn't warm and the sawdust pie was dense and dry which I realize goes with the name and main ingredients (traditionally coconut, pecans, and graham cracker crumbs) but when I saw theirs had bananas I decided to try it thinking the bananas would make it less dry but was sadly disappointed. There were another line, which was much shorter for ice cream and dessert. Since we were somewhat full from our early lunch, we opted for Bluebell ice cream and a few slices of pies. We ordered an ice cream sundae and then a three-scooper with slices of pies -- pecan and coconut cream. First of all, you can't go wrong with Bluebell ice creams. Next are the pies. I love the pecan pie but I wasn't too fond of the coconut one. However, one of my friend seemed to like it. It was too bad that we just ordered desserts and not a real meal. I recalled a previous visit when I was here with my wife and my mother that the sandwiches here were pretty good. I did have a fond memory of the Monte Cristo. For the ambiance and decoration, it retained its old charm. I loved the wooden counter and the booths here. Final score is 4-star rating.
