Can't beat the prices, get there early if you want to enjoy their daily specials, usually 3 proteins to pick from, 3aides with a dessert and tea to drink. .. always long list of sides to choose from. Well...this is about as American as you can get. Super friendly service. She knew everyone by name who came thru the front door. Handwritten sign on door - No Credit Cards. I'm glad I saw it before we ordered and the cops came. When I entered the cafe, a waitress yelled at me, "We're done serving breakfast!" It reminded me of a movie, where some guy traveling the South, ends up in the wrong place at the wrong time. I did notice many of the favorable reviews are posted by Local Guides. Hmmm. Stopped in while I was passing through. So glad I stoped. Arrived for breakfast and noticed some awesome lunch specials and was disappointed I was there a little too early for lunch. I ordered scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage and pancakes. The sausage was fresh and very delicious. The pancakes were light and fluffy. My wife and I tried this restaurant after it reopened after the Christmas holidays. Unfortunately it was not a very good experience. I ordered the Recently Added barbecue sandwich which turned out to be mostly chunks of onion in a bland barbecue sauce with little bits of beef mixed in. My wife's lame chili dog was not not much better; both items were written on the chalkboard ; perhaps best advice is to stick to menu items. Our waitress was extremely chatty and pleasant, but that did not make up for the lack of good food that we were expecting ; we hope to try this place again sometime to give it a second chance ; in terms of ambience it's rather quaint and unfortunately we visited them during a peak time and they were rather busy and I got the distinct feeling that my wife and I were sitting in someone else's so-called " regular table" so we got stared down by several people.. Gee, sorry, local people my wife are new to town and we're just trying out new restaurants ....not meaning to offend anybody. However, I will say it would be nice if Brenham residents would simply come to a full stop at stop signs, use their freakin' turn signals and unless you have a protected turn from the traffic light at Day and W. Stone St., people turning left should yield the right of way to those people turning right or going straight through the intersection! Obeying the traffic laws would simply make driving the streets of Brenham a much more pleasant experience. read more

I used to come here as a kid, so coming back to visit was nostalgic. Ate here with family yesterday, and it ticked all the boxes. It's great places like this still exist. Entree, 3 veggies, tea, dessert--all just under $10. Simple fare, you may need to add some salt and pepper, but it's a nice, old fashioned plate lunch worth experiencing. But, darn it, I missed the banana pudding by one day. read more

We got a table right away at 9:30am on a Thursday. The biscuit and pancakes were delicious! The ham & cheese omelette had lots of ham and was very filling. I didn't care for the hash browns because there was too much seasoning for my taste and they were a bit greasy. Service was excellent! This is where the locals go and the staff knows them. Let me start by stating that I almost did not post this review because at 59 years old I am by far the youngest person in this place when I entered and I'm fairly confident everybody in here remembers when Eisenhower was elected president so have never heard of Yelp. At least two folks came in eventually that were at least my age. Service was outstanding!! They apparently have a daily set menu so today I ordered the fried pork with mashed potatoes, turnip greens and squash casserole. They added a little piece of cherry cake too! Before I barely had time to check my work emails my plate was sitting in front of me. All I have to say is YUM!!! Simple down home comfort food with the taste to match and the cherry cake was excellent. All that at by far the cheapest price so far I've found in Brenham. What a find... we moved to town 3 weeks ago and have been on the hunt for homemade French fries ... everywhere just serves the frozen seasoned kind... my hubby went to get breakfast but missed the cut off by 6 min ...he decided on a BLT and imagine his joy when the lively waitress said "would you like a side of homemade fries"!!! It was excellent and not expensive... when he told him about it I dragged him back for lunch and had a lovely "Canadian" burger with brown gravy on everything including the fries!! Gave it three stars because if you don't have a lot of teeth, are borderline diabetic, and are on a no-sodium/no sugar diet then this is the place for you!! They cook their food with absolutely no seasoning whatsoever so no need to worry about sodium spikes or sugar crashes. No knife? No problem! They considerately cook their food down so you can scoop it up with a fork! Oh-- and if you don't have time to wait for hot, steamy food-- the A/C blows right on the tables so the food is like it's fresh-from-the-fridge cold. Mmmm-mmmmm good! I will give props to the servers. It was full on lunch rush and they never stopped moving or smiling -- lots of "honey" this and "sweetie" that. Good old down-home friendliness. Both were A+, and the amount of good you get for $8 is ridiculous, (turkey, dressing, cranberries, mashed potatoes, potato salad, 3 rolls, german chocolate cake, and a drink!!!!). I have eaten here at least ten times, a testimony to their good food at a reasonable price. There has never been a disappointment. My favorite is their port cutlet. It is the best in at least a hundred mile radius. Don't expect fancy ambiance. This place is for eaters! The servers are friendly and efficient. Many have worked there for years and years. read more

I am a Native Brenhamite who has not lived there since 1966. However, growing up, my Dad had a business across the street from The Santa Fe Cafe and we ate there regularly. Back then, it was run by the original mom 'n' pop owners and had that real small town feel and flavor. I believe you can still find the essence of what old town Brenham was all about by stopping in The Santa Fe Cafe and eat some real down home food and listen to the locals chat it up. Yes, gone is the old 'Flo' type waitress with her pastel uniform and order pad ... and, gone are Mr. Y& Mrs. Plains who ran a really fine cafe. But --- you'll still find a bit of the 1950s lingering around within the walls of The Santa Fe Cafe. Too bad the City of Brenham was too stupid to stop the railroad from tearing down the old 1800s passenger train depot right next to the cafe. Then, that's my private "beef" with Brenham ... They just don't know a good thing when they've got it and they allow their heritage and history to just be razed away. You can't build tourism on a one-horse town item such as Blue Bell and expect to survive. It's the TOTAL package that makes a small town worth visiting.
