What a gem of a FIND! We love visiting establishments off the beaten path. This is definitely a place we will visit every time we are anywhere near Brenham. We popped in on Sunday morning. The parking lot was almost full. When we walked in, a sign directed us to seat ourselves but before we could go so, lovely staff greeted us and engaged with us. We chose a cute booth in the back that was made out of recycled bus seats. Also next to us was a wall of honor/history/fun. Don't miss it. It's so fun! Our server was knowledgeable, and engaging. Based on her recommendations we tried the bacon (Yum!!) Biscuits (don't miss!!) ranch potatoes, hash browns & the chicken honey biscuits (wow!!). Portion sizes are large freshly made. They know what they are doing here. The owner was raised in the area, trained at prestigious Le Cordon Bleu and returned back into her roots to open the establishment, worth a day trip to see the bluebonnets and take in a meal. Great place for breakfast and lunch....food offerings are many and tasty. Chicken fried steak with fried okra and fries is my favorite - it can be ordered with any two sides. Fried okra is cooked to perfection. My wife likes the pancake. The service is exceptional and the place has friendly ambiance. The "sweets" vitrine is inviting but can't eat sweet stuff. My friend and I came to Smitty's on a Tuesday afternoon, it was busy but starting to thin out as we dined. It was seat yourself service, but it took us quite a while to receive service or even some kind of recognition (about 15-20 minutes). Our server was an older white woman who was seemingly passive aggressive our entire interaction. It was just strange to see her treat her other tables, who were literally right next to us, with better customer service.... The food was good but I didn't like how the prices were redacted from the menu, and you weren't made aware until it was time to pay. We paid about $43 total (without tip) for one Chicken Fried Steak Plate and one French Toast plate. This unassuming renovation of an old gas station is a pleasant surprise if you're in Brendan. The servers are great--friendly, efficient, and sassy, with funny t shirts. But...the food is what really shines. Whoever is back in the kitchen working that fryer really knows their stuff. The fried stuff was perfect--piping hot, crispy, but not greasy. My side salad was gorgeous, and as impressive as entree salads I've had. My "Chicken strips" were more like 2 full breast fillets, and were delicious (even the one I didn't get to for 12 hours!). My companion's chicken fried steak was excellent, he said, as were the perfectly cooked green beans. But...the onion rings!!! To die for. Huge. Crispy. Perfection. I'm just glad this cafe is 100 miles from my home--otherwise I'd be back way too often to this Fried Heaven. read more

We visited on a Sunday right around peak brunch time and service was pretty slow as expected. We had to wait a while for a table and our food. But the food was delicious! Good place on the side of the road that used to be a gas station. Great thick cut bacon and hand formed sausage patties. Biscuits are nice and heavy buttermilk style, dense like they were made grandma. The stick to your ribs kind. Hand shredded potatoes for the hash browns. Try them, you'll understand what I mean. Pancakes are large, about 8" across, comes on its own plate. Good coffee and friendly people. Bigger on the inside than it looks from the outside. Parking lot full but plenty room inside and has an outdoor seating and smoking area. Give 'em a try and enjoy. read more

The restaurant was busy, but it seems like they may only have one person working in the kitchen. Service is extremely slow. When this wonderful restaurant was downtown Brenham, we were there at least 2 Sundays a month. They moved to their 290 location and have given their customers a larger dining area, they do not disappoint. Many must haves on their menu, however the Chicken Fried Steak any-day (Or Wednesdays) is hands down the best next to making it at home! My wife and I recently came to this restaurant for a Sunday lunch which was unfortunately not very good. We both ordered cheese burgers and we asked that they be cooked medium and they came out well done. Our waitress said that that's the way they cook them ; well then why did they ask us how we wanted them cooked anyway? We sat in a booth near the front and the window was absolutely gross with fingerprints and dead flies at the base of the window ; seriously, they need to think about getting both inside and outside windows cleaned on a regular basis . The menus that we were given, had black marker editing over the prices and was really hard to read. The one positive aspect of the restaurant was that the onion rings were absolutely enormous with a crispy coating and juicy on the inside. read more

After we finished breakfast, I almost wished we had missed it, which may not be fair since the menu items were exactly what we expected and came to the table exactly as ordered, and my husbands disagrees with me. But, its my review so I am speaking my mind! Eggs and chicken fried steak (half order) disappeared quick enough but gravy on my biscuits was just warm and left me a little underwhelmed. Located off the highway in a former gas station, this place served up the best country breakfast!! The chef owner is classically trained and it shows. Though it was standard diner fare, we could tell our brekkie was prepared by expert hands. The biscuits were only to be rivaled by my grandmother! Don't forget about this great little comfort food restaurant! It's just a little outside of the city limits on 290 west and definitely worth driving a mile or two. Best breakfast in town, available over many hours, and Smitty's has a full menu featuring salads, hot plate lunches, hot sandwiches and the best chicken fried steak ever. This was a welcomed find in the morning after needing to stay the night in town. When arrived it was obvious several tables had just sat and were waiting for their orders. We actually sat at the last remaining open table. Regardless the staff made sure we had plenty of to drink while we waited, and continued to check on us throughout at perfect intervals. When we started seeing others food come out we knew we would be happy. And while it took a bit it was not all unreasonable. Everything we ordered looked and tasted amazing, it was honestly more than any of us could finish despite wanting to keep trying. Oh dear. Friends recommended this cafe for us to try. I wanted so badly to like it. I think the entire wait staff was new and there was one cook. They were out of biscuits and my eggs were sent out so undercooked the whites were watery and the eggs were inedible. They did remove my meal from our ticket. Not what I expected after reading previous reviews. The biscuits were cold and hard. The bacon hide a little extra protein. I took my tray back to the waiter as it had a centipede moving across the tray. She acknowledged the bug but only picked it off my tray. Later when she dropped off the ticket, she announced that she cut my meal price by half. At that moment, I showed her a dead fly on the table and warned her about the flying warp in the window next to the table. Food was burnt. I will not be back. read more

My husband and I ate at this cute cafe a few weeks ago. We ate the best breakfast with a homemade biscuit and cream gravy that was so good!! Our eggs were cooked perfect and we had real sausage. I ordered the Kitchen Sink with a biscuit and coffee and pancakes for the kids. I've had hash before but this looked like every left over thing in the fridge slapped on a metal tray. It was as unappetizing as it looked, it looked like slop. The outside of the biscuit was somewhat warm to the touch and cold in the middle. Coffee was warm bordering on cold. Kids Bacon was somewhat cold and floppy/not crisp. I really wanted to love this place, it had a cool vibe, but not a do over and wouldn't take anyone there.
