He was hoping to get the chicken, but they were already sold out. He still really enjoyed his meal. I'm vegetarian, so I ordered a few sides. My only small wish was that the BBQ sauce had been warm, but that may just be because that's what I'm used to at our BBQ spot back home. The potato salad tasted like something from the grocery store. The staff was excellent and very friendly. We also enjoyed that the restaurant is connected to the antique shop next door, which was a nice little bonus. We'll definitely be back the next time we're in the area!

The second stop on our family road trip was Bevers Kitchen & Gifts for one reason and one reason…read moreonly: PIE. So I can't tell you a thing about the lunch menu. I can't tell you about the chicken fried steak, the chicken salad or anything else coming out of that kitchen. But pie? Oh, I can talk about the pie. First of all, this place is CUTE. It's got that wonderful little small-town Texas feel that makes you want to slow down, look around and buy something homemade before you get back on the road. We couldn't possibly choose just one flavor, because apparently nobody in my family possesses that kind of restraint. We left with slices of cherry, peach, fudge pecan and buttermilk. Let's start with the star of the show. THE CHERRY PIE. 1000000/10. I am not exaggerating when I say this was, without a doubt, the best cherry pie I have ever eaten. It was absolutely spectacular. The whole family agreed. The filling, the flavor, that gorgeous made-from-scratch crust...everything worked. If you put another slice of it in front of me right now, this review would have to wait. The peach surprised me almost as much because I DON'T EVEN LIKE PEACHES. And yet there I was, happily eating peach pie and reconsidering some of my life choices. It was delicious. The fudge pecan received rave reviews from the family members who tried it. I didn't get a bite of that one, so I'm not going to sit here and pretend otherwise, but I was very enthusiastically assured that it was fantastic. The buttermilk was the only one that didn't really land for us, but I want to be fair about why. My family and I grew up eating a very traditional, custardy buttermilk pie. Bevers' version seemed to be a cream-cheese based, and simply wasn't the style any of us expected. It wasn't BAD. It just wasn't our buttermilk pie. If you prefer that richer, creamier style, you may absolutely love it. But here's what ALL four slices had in common: THAT CRUST. Made from scratch, flaky, tender, buttery and exactly what pie crust is supposed to be. You can tell somebody back there understands that the crust isn't merely transportation for the filling. It matters. We'll absolutely stop again when we're anywhere near Chappell Hill, and next time I may actually try the food everyone keeps talking about. But let's not kid ourselves. I'm coming back for that cherry pie.

Unfortunately, it looks like the original diner is no longer in use, at least when we went, and a separate bar area had opened next to it where they now seat everyone. Though parking is plenty, it was hard to understand the layout when we first drove in. They still use a gravel/dirt/grass lot, which isn't a big deal, but the spaces of where we could park weren't immediately clear. I was impressed by the inexpensive options on their menu though and the portion sizes were big. However, those are the only good points. We ordered biscuits and gravy, breakfast potatoes, and their Pig in a Pancake, which wraps a breakfast sausage in a pancake. The food was overly salty and my pancake was very dry. No syrup was brought out; we had to go grab it ourselves. Same with eating utensils, which they now use disposable plastic ware. Paper towels are on each table, the only convenience. Though the employees here are nice, they did the bare minimum and never checked in on us after bringing us our food. I'm sad to see that this place has gone downhill.
