Spent the weekend in town for a wedding and needed a quick bite to eat for lunch. We stopped in around 2pm and it had a steady flow of customers while we were there. I had the cloud 9 salad (chicken salad over greens, berries, and candied pecans) and swapped out the Dijon for the raspberry vinaigrette. It was a very good size portion salad and hit the spot! I am baffled by the fact that this place has any good reviews. It's obviously a small family business so I feel genuinely bad rating it this low but I feel nauseous thinking about the food we received. I ordered the Pastrami & Swiss (1/2 sandwich). It was TINY. The bread was thin and limp (not toasted) and could barely hold the meat. The meat (I gag as I write this) was rubbery and cold (it was supposed to be a hot sandwich per the menu). I could have found better pastrami pre-packaged at the grocery store. I've had such delicious pastrami sandwiches at multiple delis/sandwich shops so this was shockingly bad, very possibly the worst pastrami sandwich I've ever been served. Also tried the broccoli cheddar soup -- tasted like strong artificial cheese. Finally, we tried a cookie -- undercooked. We were hungry and late for an appointment so we choked down what we could but this was an extremely unpleasant meal. I always go for the fresh blue bell ice cream In the ice cream case. My fav is the chocolate chip or chocolate with raw almonds, yum!! If you go past the ice cream section of the shop they have hot lunches and some amazing desserts. The pies look home made and have loads of fruit in them. This place makes for a great day trip from Houston, College Station or Austin. It's an especially nice drive during bluebonnet season where most of the highways are bursting with color. This is a Brenham mainstay. It's always crowded and for good reason. My girlfriend and I had visited before but ended up eating someplace else the first time we were there. That was an unfortunate mistake. Our visit last weekend was to just have some pie and sit for a spell after another exploration of downtown Brenham. Service is amazing and the people are super friendly. It was a little warm in the restaurant which doesn't bode well for the sweltering summer months. HVAC likely needs some work since while the men's restroom was super-clean, it was as cold as a meat locker! The pie was a little mixed. My girlfriend's buttermilk pie was some of the best we'd ever had. My coconut meringue could have been good but was served room temp, meaning the filling had melted all over the place and the meringue had gotten a little hard and chewy. The crust on both pieces of pie was amazing and is homemade. We will definitely visit again and look forward to trying one of their deli sandwiches. read more
