Murray's is quickly becoming one of my favorite spots in Austin. From their awesome apps to their mini drinks to their Wednesday steak night and frites special, everything is top notch. The ambiance is cozy with shareable tables as well as booths. I highly recommend the trio of mini drinks. My top selections are the polka dot, frozen brandy and a dirty gin martini. Really great neighborhood restaurant bar tucked into back side street on a row of bars. Decided to finally check out the area and stopped at a few locations before heading here. Had no expectations and it turned out to be a really cool *Irish* pub restaurant serving up great cocktails and fresh food. We got a couple of drinks, oysters (super good), steak tartar, and some fries. It was all much better than you'd expect from what seems like a casual bar. Their menu looked really good and the staff were very nice. It was quiet midday on a Sunday but that's always enjoyable. Will definitely have to go back again and try more food and drinks! read more

I visited here on a Wednesday when they do their $35 Steak Frites dinner! I was excited to finally try it and had heard so much about the special. Parking here was pretty tight (in their private lot on the side of the restaurant), but there is ample parking on the street or a paid parking lot too nearby! There's also plenty of seating on the inside, but would still recommend booking a reservation just in case. On the inside, they've decorated the place to be more Christmas themed, and have some of the best music playing that I've ever heard in a restaurant (mix between old school and new school)! The waiter was very informative + attentive and always made sure that I had everything I needed. Onto the food - the food was fantastic. If I could give it 6 stars, I would. The chimichurri sauce that was on top of the steak was a perfect touch to the entire meal - and left me wanting more once my plate was already empty! Spent Monday at Murray's Tavern and had the best time when I found out Monday is all-day Happy Hour: $2 oysters, discounted drinks, and we enjoyed the following dishes: spinach artichoke dip, pigs in a blanket and the fries --they all came out fast, hot, fresh and delicious! I have been dying to go here. My boyfriend surprised me for date night and I was ready to eat it all! He put in the reservation description that it was our date night. They sat us in the perfect spot away from the bar (even though the bar ambiance was delightful) in a cosy nook. We were greeted by Oscar with two little welcome glasses of champagne to cheers to our date. Let me just say this was only the beginning of the first class service Oscar provided us. He let us know his favorites and we ordered just that. The beef tartar & the crab cake. Both were delicious. The crab cake was probably the winner of the whole evening though. We had the fish and chips, the french dip and a last minute addition was the French onion soup. All amazing! At the end Oscar asked if we wanted dessert. We exclaimed that we were so full, but even still we asked... what do you have? He told us profiteroles and my heart sank. I had done the inconceivable and forgotten all about how I saw them on the menu and had meant to save room it. We politely declined even though we didn't want to. I think Oscar could sense my disappointment because after we asked for the check he brought us one profiterole so we could try it. It was the perfect ending to our evening. We had the absolute best experience at Murray's on Christmas Eve, and a huge part of that was our incredible server, Len. We came in for the steak and martini deal and were blown away from start to finish. The service was phenomenal--attentive, warm, and perfectly timed--while the food was nothing short of perfection. This Tavern sits in a part of old East Austin where both the new and the old clash. You'll find five available parking spaces here, but I was surprised to find that street parking was plentiful with no meters. I had plenty of advance notice of coming here with a group of friends which gave me time to read through the over 50+ current reviews. The fish and chips are very popular and the prime rib has more positive than negative reviews. It seems only a few people liked their chicken pot pie. If you're hoping to get the prime rib, it's only available after 4 PM Tuesday through Saturday and it's $40. I was surprised to see that there was not a single "business owner's" response to any of the reviews which means they are probably not monitoring this social media platform. But then again, with their current four and a half star rating, perhaps they don't need to. When you step into this place from a sunny day, your eyes will need to become acclimated to the cool dark interior. Within the confines of this place is some nice custom woodwork along with an embossed tin type ceiling with 20+ seats at the bar. They do have a full bar, but their menu features a fairly limited selection of drinks, wines, and food. They do have a private back room at the rear which is perfect for intimate group settings. The private room is surrounded with vintage knickknacks and pictures in the cabinets and on the surrounding walls. We opted for some appetizers and I later drifted back in to the bar and grabbed one of their supposedly famous burgers which gives you 3 cheese choices (comes with no mustard or mayo). The burger was freshly cooked with a somewhat decent sized patty, but it really lacked seasoning. To be honest, it was not worth anywhere near the $22 tab, more like $10. Just as a side note, they do actually have some decent single malt scotches to finish off your time here. If I lived in the area, I'd come back here for drinks and that's due to the fact that the parking here is easier than downtown and no meters....yet. read more

First Take - Cool place in the east side of Austin. Very solid setup and huge bar. I'd say stop there. Ordered a drink that they light a cinnamon stick and place it into the drink. Ask for it to be put out, it's like someone is smoking a cigar at your table. Feasting - I had the steak, baked potato and green beans. Sub par. I unfortunately had a bday party here so everyone that had a potato had a different sizes potato. Kinda unfortunate when you're all paying the same price. We discovered Murray's Tavern on a Reddit thread when we were searching for the best Reuben in Austin. Noble and Hailey took such great care of us, and the weather was amazing on the spacious tree-shaded patio. Everything we ordered was better than we expected, from the savory French onion soup to the Caesar salad with anchovies to the burger to the aforementioned Reuben. The ice cream profiteroles were scrumptious, and the creamy cheesecake was even better. Will be back to try Grandma's goulash and the fish and chips. read more

We dined at Murray's Tavern on 1/24. We found street parking which was lucky. We were warmly greeted and led to our table in the back room of the restaurant. It was cold, and not as warm and inviting as the front room and bar. There was a special Burns Night menu honoring Scottish poet, Robert Burns. We decided to order one of the apps off the Burns night menu which was more of a take on a pasty then a meat pie.The pastry was delicious, the inside wasn't very good. The gulash had the same mixture of meat as the pasty...way too salted and tasted strange.The Rueben with fries was good, the fish and chips were good, but it was very greasy. It could have used an extra minute to drain. Paulaner Hefe on tap was good. Very noisy. Probably won't return. read more

My wife and I love Nickel City, so we had to come check out Murray's Tavern. First, a run-down of the food: cheesey puffs...small and you get 3...but it does resemble a UK pastry sort of but it's not enclosed; Waldorf Salad--holy moly, a lot of chicken and taste was great! Value item for sure. Oysters Rockefeller--nice, but using smaller, delicate oysters allows the rest they sit on to overpower the oyster, so if you love oysters, I'd compare this ti someone loving Alaskan King Crab to getting an East Coast Blue Crab Cake. I couldn't resist ordering Grandmas Ghoulosh--winner, winner, chicken dinner! Service was good, the vibe, ambiance, atmosphere great, and by 7pm, this place was packed! Went here on a Wednesday and was disappointed by both food and service. FOOD - Pigs in a blanket: 6.5/10, perfectly solid. Juicier than expected. Sauce was good. - Beef tartare: 4/10, it didn't give me food poisoning but it also didn't give me much flavor - Fish and chips: 6/10, large piece of fish, came out hot, the filet was fresh, but the batter got soggy very quickly. The fries were fine but so are the fries at Costco. The sauce they had with the fish was very tasty. - Wedge salad: 4/10. Feels hard to mess up a wedge salad? But they did? It was a touch too heavy handed with the (slightly bitter) dressing. There were six sliced grape tomatoes arranged in a circle around the plate, outlining the wedge of lettuce. There was a slice and a half of bacon on top. For $15, this felt just short of highway robbery. - Steak frites: I cannot rate these because I didn't try them but my friend got them and I do have feelings about the situation. When they first brought the steak out it was RED red. Truly the rarest steak I've ever seen. Don't get me wrong, I like a level of doneness that a french chef would not be offended by. But this was basically beef tartare part 2. One of the waitstaff was also weird about sending it back to the kitchen. When my friend politely asked if they could cook it a little more, and gestured to her meat that was still mooing, the waiter replied, "Are you sure? If you send it back they have to make you a whole new one." Some mild bovine gaslighting. Odd vibe. But they did bring her a new steak that looked a lot better. - Guinness: 10/10 excellent Guinness SERVICE - I had approximately one vial's worth of water the entire dinner. Basically enough to satisfy a large-ish bird. Maybe an owl. Do they drink water? I digress. - To be fair, it was very busy and might've been understaffed for the night. But our waiter would disappear for mysterious amounts of time and whenever he reappeared we had to flag him down, but it wasn't easy to do. And when we did manage to flag him down he would talk to us for approximately 17 seconds before rushing away again and going to the mysterious secret place. He was very flighty and kept leaving before I could ask for another owl's serving of water. All in all, the place has a good vibe but the food was ~not~ great, especially considering the price. Maybe we hit an extra busy night and that's why the service was what it was. But I will probably not find out because I do not plan on returning. The end. read more

Murray's Tavern is Austin's best kept secret for prime rib. I kid you not. This was the best prime rib I've ever had in my life. I liked that it was soft, tender, moist, perfectly cooked to medium rare, perfectly seasoned, no gristles, and easy to chew. I loved their horse radish and garlic mayonnaise. Portions were large for $39, so my husband and I split it in half. Sides were an additional $8. We enjoyed the creamed spinach. We will definitely come back again just for the prime rib and try more sides! Monday nights are half off the Murray Burger coming to $11. However, they didn't offer any gluten free buns. read more

This is the third or fourth time we visited Murray's Tavern which has become a go to spot for us. They are dog-friendly inside the restaurant - which is amazing because hotter days will be upon us soon here in Austin. Plus their all around awesome bartender and goodwill ambassador, Javi, always makes our visit fun! This visit, we tried new items - Grandma's goulash & Reuben with a side of mushrooms. As always, the food was delicious, albeit a bit salty, the cozy atmosphere and friendly staff makes this a favorite spot for us. Tavern with wooden supports and arches giving that neighborhood gathering place feel. Great music on the loudspeakers with the din you'd expect from a bar establishment. Seating is first come first served with no reservations. Mostly bar seating and high tops with some booths. Hightops and bar are communal so get ready to rub some elbows and make some new friends. Televisions were hung up and you can really enjoy some food and drinks while watching a game. Servers are really nice and helpful with suggestions. Drinks are fairly well made we had a Paper Plane and a Rob Roy - both warm you up on a cold winter day. For food we tried: Oysters "The Rockefeller" - oysters were nice but I didn't love the herb pastis, cream, spinach and Parmesan. I'd go with the traditional set ups and take em raw. Ham and cheesy puffs - three bite size puffs with prosciutto (though they say shaved country ham), a dab of honey and cheddar cheese (melted into the puff). These were good but tiny. Chicken Pot Pie - flaky pastry topper on a bowl of delicious chicken and herb veloute. It's more soupy and less creamy with ample salt and pepper. Chicken was slightly mealy in texture. Overall we enjoyed this dish the most The Ruben- was expecting a hefty sandwich like you'd get in a NY deli, but this was regular toast sandwich sized. Two slices of marbled rye with chunks of corned beef, Gruyère, and sauerkraut. Comes with some good fries and a half a large dill pickle. Honestly this was a good size since a little sauerkraut goes a long ways. Salt potatoes- little potatoes, skin-on, boiled in brine and tossed with butter and herbs. These were really tasty. Murray's Tavern is such a treasure! Hidden in the central east side of Austin. My husband and I came here for an early dinner before our comedy show. The vibes of this place were very old style New York pub. We found seats at the bar and had Johnny as our main server/bartender. He was great, always checking in on us and making sure everything was on point even when it got busy. He even gave us a complimentary shot at the end. The food was incredible! We started with grilled oysters and Murray's charcuterie plate. For our entrees we had the prime rib and fish and chips. When I tell you my mouth is still watering from all the banging flavors each plate had, I'm ready to go for more! The prime rib was hands down the best dish. Literally melts in your mouth and the flavors were nostalgic. The charcuterie plate was also surprisingly good, when putting everything together on a cracker, my taste buds were shocked by the multi flavors. Walking in, we expected typical bar food, but this was anything but. Significantly elevated, we all tried different dishes and loved every one of them. It is clear they use real, high quality ingredients and prepare each meal with care. You really can't go wrong with any of the main course options but make sure you start with the beef tartar! The steak tartare here is delish and tasty. At $15 it's listed under snacks but definitely it's an entree sized portion and one of cheaper steak tartare plates in town compared with $20+ ones you'd find at steak houses. I'd say the meat quality is pretty good and if you like a little more bits and fat in your tartare for texture this is the one. You also get these fried saltines to put the tartare on which remind me of ritz crackers. We came just as they opened during the holidays to avoid the evening crowds and parked on the street nearby. There was already a group of people waiting for them to open. The layout is open seating with several high tables out front, a large bar table with lots of seating and a more traditional tables by the walls. It's a renovated space but it reminds me of how a tavern would look in the 1980s without the smoking; though I was much too young to ever go inside of these places back then. There's definitely a retro feeling here with little kitschy things. Definitely you will get east coast tavern vibes here based on the menu - they have fish and chips, prime rib, burgers, etc. i personally got their signature burger with fries. Drinks are old school. They are definitely craft cocktail prices at $14-15 each but they are well made. I frozen brandy Alexander and the Rob Roy and enjoyed them. They also have $9 mini cocktails as well. Welcome to the neighborhood, Murray's! I'm so glad you're here. Im from the UK and as soon as I stepped inside I immediately felt like I was back home in the pub! I of course went for the fish and chips and it made my little British heart happy. The fish was perfectly crisp and flaky throughout and was everything I could have hoped for. The remoulade served on the side initially gave me some pause - I'm a sucker for tartar sauce - but it was really very similar and pretty tasty. I sat at the bar on a Friday night and between taking bites of my food and reading my book, I didn't realize until after my meal how busy it had gotten.
