I came here for breakfast after being inspired by some great reviews on Yelp! :) There is a parking lot next to the building and ample street parking. The inside is cool and modern. There is a full coffee bar and a limited but delicious menu! I wanted to get several of the items but had to limit myself to just one. If you have folks that have a variety of dietary restrictions this place is great. They have everything from Keto and Vegan options. I got the Brunchwrap and it was DELICIOUS. I consider myself a breakfast burrito guru and this one can stand up amongst the best. It is tasty without being too heavy and offers an abundance of flavors beyond just egg. I also got an iced coffee. Delicious! read more

Our waitress couldn't be friendlier. The menu looked amazing and appeared to have sufficient quality offerings. The food however was awful. We both got the BYOB, I wanted the Eggs Benedict but they couldn't make that today. The roasted vegetables were burned and dried out for both of us. My over easy eggs were over hard and appeared crunchy around the edges. The waitress happily replaced them but the second serving was worse than the first, very runny and also inedible. My friend ordered poached eggs and they were great. Both our toast orders were over cooked and hard. The potatoes were pretty good. I suspect the cook was working with a grill that was too hot or they were just inexperienced. The ambiance was nice. Fifty ($50.00 including tip) for two breakfasts a coffee and tea is a bit pricey. Especially given the very poor preparation. read more

Man, where do I start? The food was over the top amazing, and the service was on point from the beginning to the end. It's such a cute little coffee shop and the food will surprise you for sure. Don't be scared of the prices, because they definitely give you what you pay for! I would recommend the WildCard add sausage, and you won't leave hungry. read more

Fantastic spot to grab breakfast/lunch with a friend, group of ladies or a quick (and healthy) business meeting. They have a solid menu with awesome/interesting menu options that are locally sourced and super tasty. You're not going to leave feeling hungry no 'bad' about what you just ate. Great treats and coffee and the dining atmosphere is super cute too. Easy parking around/along side the store front. But you do have to drive... it's not very walkable from the usual spots. read more

The five star reviews weren't kidding! This place is great. I love the decor and vibe of the place. Service was great! I had this: Avo Bravo 12 turkey, spinach, black beans, tomatoes, corn, avocado mash, tortilla strips, sriracha ranch dressing It was really good! Nice change of pace to have deli turkey in it instead of something heavier or just chicken. Perfect since I wasn't crazy hungry. Good portion size. The rest of my table really enjoyed their food as well. Pretty sure all of the plates went back to the kitchen empty! I'll be sure to return when I'm in town again. :) read more

A clean, feel good breakfast place that puts a smile on your face with its inviting hosts, neat interiors and innovative menus (and their funny names like Kevin Malone or Angela Martin) I ordered the O.G. Sandwich which comes with poached eggs, greens and cheddar in milk buns and goes perfectly with the morning tea or coffee. My wife had the naan wrapped meat (forgot the name) and she was impressed too. This is a perfect breakfast place and we're sure about coming back soon! read more

The place is for sure a hidden gem on the outskirts of Downtown GR. It's like finding a bright cottage door in the middle of nowhere. I felt as if I was walking into a homey, warm place and I found myself just being energized sitting down at Mudpenny. The door leads you to a small cafe, with lots of baked goods, good scent of coffee and food mixed. Then the waiter lead us into the side room, which had all the tables for people to sit down for breakfast and brunch. This is one place that did not let me down when I got to see the place in real life. If the place was closer by, I'd go here much more often! Their menu had lots of vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free options. I'm usually a meat lover, so I'd never consider getting a vegetarian option, but the vibe here actually made me want one. So glad I did. I got the BrunchWrap(a personal favorite of the waiter whom I asked) that came with a tomato sauce, which was amazingly good. The ingredients in the BrunchWrap just went along so well with each other and started to melt in my mouth. It was very filling, thought it didn't seem like much. Didn't get any drinks. A nice atmosphere however, the coffee was so bitter and cold. Also, I wanted a hot latte but their steamer was out of service so they couldn't make any hot drinks. The waiter was nice but the service was slow. Food was good however this pancake cost us a pretty MudPenny... ($15!!) I probably wouldn't come here again. read more

MudPenny Can we just talk about one of our favorite places ever? Mud Penny has been a favorite meeting spot of ours for a few years and we've loved getting to know the totally awesome crew here. Wondering where the name MudPenny comes from? Well, check out their website. It's one of the coolest little history lessons you'll love to tell others about. They have an incredible food and coffee menu that never ceases to amaze us. Please don't pass up MudPenny as just a coffee bar, because it's so much more. Good vibes and unique upscale brunch options. This was definitely a treat for the family, but I look forward to returning for just a date or adult gathering. When trying a spot for the first time, I always go for a vegetarian or vegan option to test the kitchen's palate and they did not disappoint! I had the Shroomer, their Pebble Creek mushrooms sandwich which was my kind of vibe!!! Layers of flavor that hit differently with every bite. The right amount of crunch, "meaty" texture, salt and creaminess combined with the freshness of herb blast in my mouth. Highly recommend if you're open to stretching your yum repertoire. read more

I had not been here since before the pandemic, and it was every bit as good as I remember. I had the chicken salad sandwich served on naan bread, I liked the pickled red onions on there, gave it just a little bit of a sweet acidic crunch. Cute inside, had a wonderful experience. read more

Deceiving when you walk in the door but they bring you to their dining area and it's very spacious, basic but clean and quaint or modern. I had the Turkey on Naan or as they call it the "Mountie" sandwich. This sandwich is to die for! Ingredients I never thought or imagined to put on a flat bread like this. Sweet potato mash with Spinach, Bacon and Turkey slices folded in half with a great sauce to finish it off! I would recommend this as a number one lunch spot just near downtown Grand Rapids, Michigan. Service here is awesome, so don't let me forget to give them high marks on that aspect as well along with a very short wait for the wonderful sandwich I just described! If you haven't been, you have to try this place out! read more

Obsessed!!!! I loved the vibe of this place! Their decor from the ceiling to the walls made a statement! I absolutely loved that they know we are still living in a pandemic! All of the tables were spaces appropriately and the staff was masked, haven't seen that in a long time. The staff was so kind and helpful. We ordered the baked French toast and OG sandwich. Both were so fantastic and came out quick and hot! Syrup came with the french toast but we didn't need it, and you should definitely add crumbled bacon! This place is truly a little gem! We don't drink coffee drinks so we didn't try anything nor did we have pastries BUT we looked at the other tables and those items looked amazing!! We will come back time and time again! read more

This is a great little spot for brunch. The setup here is an order-at-the-counter, grab a table and they bring you your meal type of thing. They have a very small menu for breakfast for lunch and they have a cafe drink menu as well on the wall. We ordered the Billy Goat "scramble", the Phillip Picante "scramble", and a couple of cappuccinos. I'm quite unsure as to why they call them scrambles other than maybe to designate that they are more of a breakfast food than lunch. It is basically two fried eggs over a bowl of stuff like spinach, sweet potatoes, and meat, and then drizzled with a sauce. Everything was extremely delicious including are cappuccinos which were totally on point. We got out of there for under $30 and had a really nice experience. read more

Yum! Seriously this place is cute, great food and has a great atmosphere. I brought my mother who has difficulty walking and she had zero issues. The gluten free menu has a variety of options that were excellent! The GF bread tasted great. Food was excellent the jam was real (huge bonus for me as I make my own!) the ingredients were fresh and the combination of food was unique and simple and bursting with flavor. The portions were the perfect size. The bakery up front had a variety of options as well. Not many GF options at the time I went. But still an excellent breakfast! Dear everyone, this place should be packed...what's happening? The food is delicious, service extremely quick (note that we were the only people in the restaurant), menu is vast and space is modernly charming. I had the dirty chai bowl for breakfast, it was flavorful and super tasty. It came with strawberries instead of bananas but honestly, I didn't even notice until after I checked the menu for this review. The chai is slightly spicy and well balanced with the other ingredients in the bowl. Would definitely order again- it's a cold dish, just FYI. Had a cup of coffee with cream and sugar, high quality cup! Super good. My sister in law had the the Billy Goat? Something like that. Egg, veggies, goat cheese. She ate the entire thing like it was her job. The ordering at the counter is unusual but totally fine. All the staff there were professional and sweet. Still don't really understand why were the only ones there- that ish was good. Parking is sparse but at this point, i expect it with GR restaurants. 5 stars! read more

I really enjoy Mudpenny I like the food, I like the atmosphere, I like the coffee. I tried the Ol'Trusty the Dirty Chia Bowl minus Banana, and a mug of Miel. Everything looked great, tasted great. I went super early, no one was there. The view is nice because they have picture windows all around the seating area. I sat there drinking my miel, people watching. Mudpenny mudpenny see you soon. I recommend the Dirty Chia Bowl if you like ginger, it's very gingercentric. read more

I love the food at MudPenny and to support local and a smaller business. However I just can not order coffee there anymore. I have learned my lesson for the last time. Everytime I wait an extra 10-15 min for coffee. No matter how far in advance I order it. Plus its one size and as pricey as the largest coffee at SB. This is there only downfall. read more

We were having such a hard time finding breakfast... so happy we stumbled upon this little gem! The parking lot was full, but we easily found close street parking. We were able to get a table right away with a party of 6... thankfully, as we were all getting quite hangry. My friend and I both ordered the Kickin Jack... sooo good! Others tried the Happy Burrito (excellent) and Bananas in Pajamas (perfect for kids). All of us thought the food was delicious and portions were nice, as it was plenty of food but not overly-sized. Staff was courteous and helpful. I'm happy we know this is here... we'll definitely be back! read more

Wow this place is great! Super fast and friendly service. Great aesthetics and low key vibe. From their exposed brick to the American cherry counter, this place is so inviting. They have plenty of seating, free WiFi, and enough outlets to keep your laptop juiced. It's so nice to find a new and refreshing coffee shop to hit in GR. On my visit I tried the Carmel latte and Kickin Jack breakfast sandy. The latte was outstanding, they even make all of their syrups in house. The Kicking Jack sandy...I'm still drooling over it. It's the quintessential southwest breakfast sandwich. Black beans, avocado, egg, chorizo, and their house made sauces. YES PLEASE! I'm equally excited to come back for lunch menu. Great job here. If you're looking for somewhere tasty to try that is near the city but not right in the busyness of downtown, MudPenny is the place to go! They serve delicious breakfast and lunch. I personally have yet to try anything on their menu and not like it. The prices are a bit higher than some other breakfast places in the area but nothing unreasonable. Overall, I'd highly recommend giving them a try! read more

Super cute decor and very friendly staff! The coffee selection was amazing and we all tried one of the fun coffee/espresso drinks. There is a healthyish and nonhealthyish side of the menu which was different. I had the Angela Martin and it was underwhelming. It definitely needed salsa! This place is so cute! The service was amazing! It's the perfect place for brunch. The space seems small when you walk in, but when you get to the dining room, the big windows make it seem so sunny and huge! The food was good, coffee was okay. My only complaint is that I thought the prices were a little high for the portion sizes. American portion sizes are notoriously huge though, haha. So maybe they're trying to get us to realize this :) I'll be going back! They also have several vegan and gluten free options. read more

MudPenny Ada is now opening a new dinner service, offering an elevated take on tapas and family style dining.

History

Established in 2012.

MudPenny began as a small coffee cart in the lobby of the Waters Building in downtown Grand Rapids. Coming from this love for coffee, the name MudPenny derives from "mud," which was a slang for coffee, and "Penny Universities" were the name for coffee houses in 17th century England. Penny Universities were the only place not segregated by class, with people gathering to discuss politics, finance, religion, literature and more. Another reason for the name MudPenny is because a penny is a small sum that over time and when combined with other contributions, will build and grow incrementally. As a result, one of our mottos is "Plant a penny and watch it grow" and we plan to contribute 1% of our sales (a penny per dollar) to neighborhood efforts and organizations. We're excited to further fulfill our business vision by connecting with the Roosevelt neighborhood and with all of Grand Rapids with our upcoming move downtown to 570 Grandville Ave.

Meet the Business Owner: Matthew F.

Matthew Fuller started Grace Coffee in 2012 as a small coffee cart in the lobby of the Waters Building in downtown Grand Rapids. He rebranded the business in August 2016 and changed the name to MudPenny. After many years working in the food industry, Matthew started the business in order to create a dining + service experience that would benefit the growing Grand Rapids community. He treats his staff like family and places a high value on creating a company atmosphere where people feel empowered, challenged + valued. Matthew and his wife, Rachel have three beautiful daughters, Abigail, Macey and Sofia. Rebecca Berends is the General Manager and has worked with MudPenny since 2013.

Every kid loves waffles. Waffles it is! This is a great restaurant for families (because ... waffles), but also a great restaurant for adults because they have a nice selection of creative cocktails in the evening, and coffee in the morning. Social Misfits is basically waffles, alcohol and caffeine, in that order. When we visited in the morning, the adults opted for coffee (really great black coffee!) and the kids both opted for the Little Lad, a waffle topped with strawberries, blueberries and chantilly cream (basically whipped cream, but a little sweeter and whipped a little longer). Both of my children ate most of their waffle, which is a big thing, considering they usually eat like birds. We also got the Son of a Biscuit, which was a garlic parmesan waffle topped with chicken sausage gravy and a fried egg. You could add fried chicken to the mix for an extra $6 (we did not). This one was fine, but the egg was way overcooked! Oh well. Lastly: We got the Ol' Blue Eyes, a waffle topped with blueberry compote, lemon curd, whipped ricotta and graham cracker crumbs. This one tasted amazing, but there was so much blueberry compote and lemon curd that it made the waffle a bit soggy. I think the chef was feeling generous with the toppings, but homie needed to hold back a tad. Sometimes, a little bit goes a long way! Fifty percent less gloppy stuff would have made this waffle dish 100% better. If you ain't really about that waffle life, then not to worry. Social Misfits also has a few "not waffles" items on the menu, like salads, sandwiches and a couple of bar snacks. But I think if you visit this restaurant, you need to just embrace waffles. There are more than a dozen different waffles on the menu. They're all fun and well-thought-out. Pick one and eat waffles for breakfast, lunch or dinner.
