Stopped in for breakfast on a Sunday morning and the line moved quickly. The menu has quite a few options and then they had seasonal drinks and food specials. They also have a cooler filled with bottled drinks and other treats. We went with the breakfast nacho special and the birddog sandwich with potatoes. They first brought us a burrito but she realized that's not what we ordered, so she apologized and took it back, so we had to wait for the nachos for a little bit. The portions were larger than I expected for a small corner cafe/coffee shop and the food was pretty good. The prices were pretty high but that's the norm these days. I came here looking for a quick bite to eat and drink while soaking up my last day in Grand Rapids. I ordered their breakfast burrito and an iced latte to go. The latte came out really quick and was well balanced - could have liked a slightly stronger coffee flavor but it was still tasty. The breakfast burrito had quite the portion of chorizo - it was more chorizo than egg. I'm not mad about it but it was definitely a regular chorizo burrito with the slightest bit of egg wrapped in there. Very tasty though and great portion size. The folks were friendly and the place is great for bringing a book or a computer to do some work. I sat by the bar area along the windows and there were some dead bugs in the window sill which I didn't love looking at while also trying to eat my food but that's about the only thing I'd complain about. It had been quite awhile since my last visit to That Early Bird but I met a friend there recently and got some work done. The space is pretty large with plenty of seating for gatherings and remote work. In warmer months their covered patio is really nice. Parking is not super plentiful in this area during peak times, but I was able to get metered street parking nearby. I ordered an oat milk latte and the birddog breakfast sandwich (smoked ham, omelet square, cheddar, bacon jam, garlic mayonnaise served on housemate milk bread bun) with a side of potatoes. They gave me a number and brought my food out to my table when it was ready. The sandwich is made with quality ingredients, but I didn't love the sweetness of the bacon jam - I'd probably ask for them to leave that off next time if possible. The egg was really nicely cooked and not rubbery. I added some hot sauce which helped balance the sweetness. The potatoes were chunky and crispy on the outside. I really did enjoy this meal and wanted to try a bunch of their other menu options, like smoked salmon toast, cheddar grits, and breakfast burritos. There is a little section of toys and children's books, so it's definitely kid-friendly. The bench seating was not the most comfortable but I was able to get quite a bit of work done and catch up with my friend. I'll be back! read more

The curried vegetable hash was a hearty reminder that spring was just around the corner and that my shoes would no longer be filled with snow. Although the hash lacked some seasoning, it paired well with the curry sauce. I also ordered their seasonal peppermint matcha, which ended up being my favorite part of the brunch. Both flavors came through in each sip, a rare find in most matcha fusion drinks. The only challenge with this spot is that it is more cafe than restaurant. They don't take reservations, and tables fill up quickly with people working or eating. Whenever I came with a group of friends, there was never enough seating to accommodate even 4 people. I went in around 11 on a Saturday and there were enough seats for two. The vibes are cozy and nice enough for a good conversation with friends. I got the hummus bowl, which came with hummus, a HUGE side tortilla, and a small salad with kale, marinated chickpeas, walnuts, sweet potato, and more. The fact that the tortilla was warmed up was a plus for me, and I loved to make small "wraps" with the tortilla, smothered with hummus, and stuffed with the salad. My friend got the avo toast, and we were surprised by how big it was. The two pieces of toast were smothered with avocado, with a generous pile of veggies, and a perfectly-runny soft boiled egg on each piece. We both finished our plates clean and were very satisfied. When we were done, one of the staff offered to clean our tables, even if there was a self-clean-up station, which I thought was very kind of her. Coming out, I couldn't resist their showcase of different baked goods, so I got two breakfast cookies, and my friend got a blueberry lavender scone, and a bacon cheddar and chive scone. I like the Early Bird's eclectic menu. Love their coffee drinks and infused lemonades. Some food items are very unique and tasty and several items might be a bit too avante garde for my taste. The salmon lox open faced sandwich was 4/5 for me. The blend of flavors was interesting, but became tiresome toward the end of the sandwich. I have gotten the breakfast tacos with chorizo and black bean and potato. The chorizo is not greasy at all, I don't know how that's possible but it's very impressive. i'm a sucker for some good matcha and delicious breakfast. i was pleasantly surprised by how big the portions were and how delicious the food was. The flavors in the california breakfast burrito are amazing and the avocado toast with salmon is a work of art. they're also many vegan options which I look for since i don't eat dairy. it's was so easy to make sure my dish was dairy free and the workers were knowledgeable on the food. note that the menu list is shortened probably due to covid but there are many great options to choose from. great area to sit and chat or read a book etc. will love to come here again! read more

I had a pretty basic breakfast, bacon and eggs, but they were both very good! My sisters ordered vindaloo curry hash and they both liked it but thought it could've been spicier, ordered it medium. It had nasty mushrooms in it so no way in hell would I have tried it! Their iced americano was really good. I found the menu/ordering process a bit confusing as I thought the only options were what was written up on the boards but later discovered they had a menu as well. Plus the staff is always very friendly and offer great recommendations if you ask. My personal favorite is the avocado toast, because of the cabbage and pickled onions it's amazing and it will fill you up. I add two soft boiled eggs for protein. My husbands favorite in the past has been the their biscuits and gravy with chorizo. It was creamy, a little spicy and we can't replicate it at home trust me we tried.. - the only reason I'd give this place a 4 star review is because they need to bring this back on the menu so I get to come here more often. That Early Bird is a fabulous, but low key café and restaurant in Eastown. It's in a very ideal location on Lake Street, across from Spirit Dreams (the new age crystal store) and is right next to the post office, very centrally located in all of the hustle and bustle of the area. It's a perfect meeting spot, with a nice outdoor seating area in the warmer months, a spacious area on the inside for dining in. The ambience is pretty minimalist, but not at all in a lacking way. Pretty basic but tasteful. However the food is not minimalist. I think it is an often overlooked brunch spot as it lacks that ambience but their breakfast/brunch items are amazing. My favorite is their eggs divorciados (basically chilaquiles with both red and green salsas). In fact, all of their Mexican food in on point. Excellent veggie tacos and burritos, excellent vegetarian options all around (and healthy/filling). They also have wonderful coffee drinks: Im obsessed with their matcha lattes, or i often order a latte with one of their delicious house syrup options, most notably their lavender and violet flavors. The staff are all really nice and cool. It's kind of hipstery but not in a snobby way. Most notably, they always have great music going. I hear so many of my favorite artists, as well as discover so many amazing musicians. Just an alm around cool fun place to relax and read or meet up with a friend. Went to That Early Bird this morning for breakfast with my 1 and a half year old. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a little worried whether or not they would have high chairs (I've noticed there's quite a few places around town that don't), but fear not!! They had a whole stack of them! Woot! We ended up ordering the blueberry lavender scone (which my daughter DEMOLISHED, and I got to have a little nibble of), it was reeally good! The lavender isn't too overpowering and there's a perfect balance of flavor and moisture so the scone wasn't at all overly dense or dry. We also got a side of roasted potatoes, which were seasoned perfectly. And I got a chorizo burrito. It was SO good. I was mildly skeptical at first just because it was a burrito that they warmed up from their cooler- but they are all made in house and seriously so delicious! It's been quite some time since I've written one of these and I'm pretty pleased to be back. That Early Bird is a American brunch spot that reminds me much of home (Los Angeles). Very west coast post yoga/climbing or pre beach fancy brunch vibes. I had an avocado toast to reminiscence the extraordinarily expensive avocado toasts from home (these are reasonably priced). This avocado toast came in a sour dough style bread shaped like an English muffin. It was loaded with mashed avocados topped with sliced radishes, salsa verde, pickled onion and the optional smoked salmon. Delicious. Good balance of acid and richness from the avocado. Bread was toasted well and still nice a chewy. My partner in crime had the vegan California burrito and stated that it was delicious 10/10. I can't say much else as I didn't take a bite, but I'll take her word. It did look good. Sorry all for the lack of picture. I forgot. I am not of the mindset that the phone eats first. Large tables for families with even a children's play set near the ground (adults with young children do have a real life because they CAN go out for brunch). 1:1 tables for that classic business meeting or brainstorming session.... to change the world. Service, generally prompt. They take your order at the counter and give you a little wooden stand with a number and your beautiful roasted expresso bean decaf cappuccino comes to you! Granted it may be a longer wait at times dependent on how busy, or perhaps how much world angst they are going through at the time. But just hang out and talk to someone for heaven's sake or get on your phone and do what millennials do best... stare into cyberspace. Tastiness, there's little desserts at the front sitting there to tempt you. There is also a well balanced menu of veg and non veg plates. Many yummy breakfast-y items and sandwiches. My ultimate favorite is the Curry Hash. It previously was a green curry and now they've recently switched to a red vindaloo curry but still good. When you arrive to the restaurant, you'll have to order first, seat yourself, and grab your own water. The staff will bring your order to your table. That Early Bird's dishes are more unique and not your typical breakfast diners. They have a lot of vegetarian and gluten free options which can be hard to find in west Michigan. I ordered the Eggs Divorciados which was really good. The portion was very generous. A bit heavy on the bean side of it but I was guaranteed to not leave hungry. A tale of 2 stories with Early Bird! I can't tell if I love it or think it's really nothing special. This place gets you with an AMAZING atmosphere. It's very welcoming, bright, and a great place to enjoy a lazy weekend day! They play some funky music and I could sit here for hours just relaxing. HOWEVER, the food is nothing to write home about. Both me and my girlfriend were less than impressed with both of our meals. I had the curry hash and she had the avocado smash. Be prepared for a much healthier tasting and less savory meal than you're expecting. Not much flavor to it and not the hearty breakfast that I was hoping for. The service was 10/10 and the coffee is pretty great! So as long as you aren't in search for the best breakfast spot in GR and want a fun little place to grab a coffee and a bakery item, then this place is great! read more

Trendy breakfast spot in Easttown that offers an expansive coffee and dining menu for all tastes. This is more of a café than a restaurant. You order and pay at the counter and seat yourself. Though, to your possible delight, these really aren't café meals. This is good food at a high price. I do feel that the entrees were up to snuff, but I want to be able to dig in a bit more for the amount that I'm spending. I would certainly return, but with altered expectations. The prices are like Anna's house but it's just a coffee shop with average everything. I didn't know there was an Easttown premium, but maybe that explains the price, which was $7.69 for my two items. A yogurt and a coffee. I was feeling cheap in Easttown and I tried to get away with a breakfast that was not $7+. Fail. The table I placed my coffee on was wobbly hence the spill photo. We also shared the baked French toast which was equally delicious. The gravy was one of the best gravies to have ever been poured over biscuits. The Latin infusion into this dish was something I had never considered before but should be done more often. My favorite version of this dish ever. Everything on the menu sounds good at the beginning but there is always something hidden in the giant ingredient list that makes me hesitant to order it.
