It had been quite awhile since my last visit to That Early Bird but I met a friend there recently and got some work done. The space is pretty large with plenty of seating for gatherings and remote work. In warmer months their covered patio is really nice. Parking is not super plentiful in this area during peak times, but I was able to get metered street parking nearby. I ordered an oat milk latte and the birddog breakfast sandwich (smoked ham, omelet square, cheddar, bacon jam, garlic mayonnaise served on housemate milk bread bun) with a side of potatoes. They gave me a number and brought my food out to my table when it was ready. The sandwich is made with quality ingredients, but I didn't love the sweetness of the bacon jam - I'd probably ask for them to leave that off next time if possible. The egg was really nicely cooked and not rubbery. I added some hot sauce which helped balance the sweetness. The potatoes were chunky and crispy on the outside. I really did enjoy this meal and wanted to try a bunch of their other menu options, like smoked salmon toast, cheddar grits, and breakfast burritos. There is a little section of toys and children's books, so it's definitely kid-friendly. The bench seating was not the most comfortable but I was able to get quite a bit of work done and catch up with my friend. I'll be back!

Cute little shop. Walk up counter to order. Coffees, teas, and sandwiches available. Self service water. Patio outside. Small toy area for young children. The ham, egg, jalapeño jam sandwich was soft and tasty but oddly sweet. Would have preferred more savory. The French toast was a nice texture and did not taste eggy. The jam and lemon topping were done nicely but overall too sweet. Great place for casual and quick breakfast/brunch in Eastown.

Great spot for studying, eating, or both! I came here for brunch to escape the winter chill, and it was well-worth it. The curried vegetable hash was a hearty reminder that spring was just around the corner and that my shoes would no longer be filled with snow. Although the hash lacked some seasoning, it paired well with the curry sauce. I also ordered their seasonal peppermint matcha, which ended up being my favorite part of the brunch. Both flavors came through in each sip, a rare find in most matcha fusion drinks. The only challenge with this spot is that it is more cafe than restaurant. They don't take reservations, and tables fill up quickly with people working or eating. Whenever I came with a group of friends, there was never enough seating to accommodate even 4 people. Hopefully they can figure out a way to improve this in the future, since we often decided to eat elsewhere after not finding seating.

I like the Early Bird's eclectic menu. Love their coffee drinks and infused lemonades. Some food items are very unique and tasty and several items might be a bit too avante garde for my taste. The salmon lox open faced sandwich was 4/5 for me. The blend of flavors was interesting, but became tiresome toward the end of the sandwich. I like that I could purchase items for my children like the mini oranges, applesauce and lemonades. They have a cute indoor/ outdoor seated area with some toys for kids and families to play with. Happy this place is in Eastown. Definitely adds to the diverse flavor of the community.

Avo Toast with Soft Boiled Eggs

I went in around 11 on a Saturday and there were enough seats for two. The vibes are cozy and nice enough for a good conversation with friends. I got the hummus bowl, which came with hummus, a HUGE side tortilla, and a small salad with kale, marinated chickpeas, walnuts, sweet potato, and more. The fact that the tortilla was warmed up was a plus for me, and I loved to make small "wraps" with the tortilla, smothered with hummus, and stuffed with the salad. My friend got the avo toast, and we were surprised by how big it was. The two pieces of toast were smothered with avocado, with a generous pile of veggies, and a perfectly-runny soft boiled egg on each piece. We both finished our plates clean and were very satisfied. When we were done, one of the staff offered to clean our tables, even if there was a self-clean-up station, which I thought was very kind of her. Coming out, I couldn't resist their showcase of different baked goods, so I got two breakfast cookies, and my friend got a blueberry lavender scone, and a bacon cheddar and chive scone. I don't have pictures of them, but I think it would be very worth it to come back to this place just for the baked goods.

If you're a foodie, you may recognize That Early Bird's sister restaurant downtown Grand Rapids called Little Bird. With the same eye for restaurant design and quality of food comes That Early Bird in Eastown. Breakfast sandwiches, pastries, tacos (including a curried goat one), That Early Bird has it all. They also have a stellar coffee menu, including a delicious brown sugar latte with nutmeg setting it a part from other lattes. There's a MASSIVE dining room with tables and window seating. The outdoor patio is also spacious. If you come to work, there are outlets under the window seating inside. The wifi is strong (get the password from the barista). The prices can be a little steep (my latte was almost $6), but I think it's worth it for the quality and experience.

Perfect spot to go do some studying, chit chat, and chill. Salmon Benedicts are very tasty, looking forward to exploring all their other menu options. The tables along the walk are a little smaller than my liking, especially to work with a laptop and ipad, but doable. My single favourite cafe in Easttown area!

Breakfast tacos - chorizo and potato and black bean
    Saurabhi P.

This place amazing!! The breakfast is sooo good. One of the best breakfast I have ever been to. Everything tastes so fresh and has amazing flavor. I have gotten the breakfast tacos with chorizo and black bean and potato. The chorizo is not greasy at all, I don't know how that's possible but it's very impressive. The black bean and potatoes was also really really good. I would highly recommend it for vegetarians. A few weeks later I went back to this place to get take out and decided to get the nachos. They were also so great and filling and delicious. I can't wait to go back again and try something different

i'm a sucker for some good matcha and delicious breakfast. i was pleasantly surprised by how big the portions were and how delicious the food was. The flavors in the california breakfast burrito are amazing and the avocado toast with salmon is a work of art. they're also many vegan options which I look for since i don't eat dairy. it's was so easy to make sure my dish was dairy free and the workers were knowledgeable on the food. note that the menu list is shortened probably due to covid but there are many great options to choose from. great area to sit and chat or read a book etc. will love to come here again!

I had a pretty basic breakfast, bacon and eggs, but they were both very good! My sisters ordered vindaloo curry hash and they both liked it but thought it could've been spicier, ordered it medium. It had nasty mushrooms in it so no way in hell would I have tried it! Their iced americano was really good. I found the menu/ordering process a bit confusing as I thought the only options were what was written up on the boards but later discovered they had a menu as well. So I placed my original order and then cancelled it quickly and put what I wanted to order in. The service as good and it was cute inside. We sat inside as it wasn't that warm yet and it was covered. I would definitely go back!

That Early Bird was fantastic. It is a quicker breakfast place with really fresh food. I had the avo toast which came on some of their homemade bread. It had pickled onion, cabbage, feta, and more! It was a good sized portion and very delicious. I would get it again for sure!

Astro 2.0 sandwich, birdog sandwich, lavender and hazelnut iced latte

Great atmosphere, quick service, and quality food/coffee. Will be back! The bread they use on these sandwiches is super soft and delicious.

It's a cozy little space on Michigan Street with takeout, pick-up and dine-in options. The food is great and the service has always been very friendly. And by god, was I impressed. It's a small little sandwich shop off of Michigan Ave that has seating for maaaybe 20 people. I ordered the spicy chicken sandwich to go, and when I got home to open my box, my jaw dropped. These guys put not one, but TWO mf chicken breast cutlets on this poor, poor bun. Topped with delicious house made pickles (their namesake), a fresh and tangly slaw, and a spicy oily sauce, this thing was a behemoth. And for, like, $15?? This is two meals for the average person. My only complaint was that the bun simply could not shoulder the monstrous burden of what it contained. Additionally, dude the fries are phenomenal. And they absolutely LOAD you up. Get the truffle upcharge, it's worth it I promise. I have been a Two Beards fan for the better part of the past 15 years, but man, in terms of value, The Toasted Pickle takes the cake. I can't wait to experience whatever else these guys are whipping up behind the counter.

The sandwich wasn't very melty, I ended up heating it up in a pan myself which helped. It was super tasty, though! I love the combination of cheeses. The steak and mushroom soup was really good, with chunks of meat in a creamy broth. The snert soup was very salty! The menu description indicated the snert soup should have sausage or kielbasa in it, but we didn't notice any. When I walked in, the place was packed. It's a small space, and it was bustling around 1 pm. I was noticed by a kind employee who let me sit at a cozy booth. The menu is huge and includes tons of sandwiches, burgers, wraps, and salads. It was tough to choose but I went with the Irish reuben (grilled pastrami, corned beef, bacon, sauerkraut, swiss cheese, thousand island on marble rye). Sandwiches come with chips, or you can upgrade to fries (regular, sweet potato, or Southwestern dipping fries) - I went with the Southwestern dipping fries, which are seasoned potato wedges. My food came out quickly and I was amazed at the large portions. It was a full basket of fries and a sandwich that would equal two full sandwiches elsewhere. The sandwich was super hot and delicious and packed with meat. I think it's one of the tastiest reubens I've had in awhile. The fries were good, but I think I prefer regular fries. Glad I got to try them, though. They have a daily special where a specific item is discounted, which makes it an affordable option for lunch. I was there on a Tuesday so the special was a spicy fried chicken sandwich or wrap for $12 served with chips or fries. That's a great deal! I will definitely be back for one of their specials. The employees I interacted with were all very friendly and kind and working really hard. I always appreciate good customer service and I found that here. Finally, they serve beer and wine, so if you want a drink with lunch, that is an option as well. The only downside is the small dining area, so I wouldn't say it's great for large groups, and they are only open Monday through Friday for lunch. Luckily I have a flexible schedule, so I'll be back for lunch again soon!
