It had been quite awhile since my last visit to That Early Bird but I met a friend there recently and got some work done. The space is pretty large with plenty of seating for gatherings and remote work. In warmer months their covered patio is really nice. Parking is not super plentiful in this area during peak times, but I was able to get metered street parking nearby. I ordered an oat milk latte and the birddog breakfast sandwich (smoked ham, omelet square, cheddar, bacon jam, garlic mayonnaise served on housemate milk bread bun) with a side of potatoes. They gave me a number and brought my food out to my table when it was ready. The sandwich is made with quality ingredients, but I didn't love the sweetness of the bacon jam - I'd probably ask for them to leave that off next time if possible. The egg was really nicely cooked and not rubbery. I added some hot sauce which helped balance the sweetness. The potatoes were chunky and crispy on the outside. I really did enjoy this meal and wanted to try a bunch of their other menu options, like smoked salmon toast, cheddar grits, and breakfast burritos. There is a little section of toys and children's books, so it's definitely kid-friendly. The bench seating was not the most comfortable but I was able to get quite a bit of work done and catch up with my friend. I'll be back!

Cute little shop. Walk up counter to order. Coffees, teas, and sandwiches available. Self service water. Patio outside. Small toy area for young children. The ham, egg, jalapeño jam sandwich was soft and tasty but oddly sweet. Would have preferred more savory. The French toast was a nice texture and did not taste eggy. The jam and lemon topping were done nicely but overall too sweet. Great place for casual and quick breakfast/brunch in Eastown.

Great spot for studying, eating, or both! I came here for brunch to escape the winter chill, and it was well-worth it. The curried vegetable hash was a hearty reminder that spring was just around the corner and that my shoes would no longer be filled with snow. Although the hash lacked some seasoning, it paired well with the curry sauce. I also ordered their seasonal peppermint matcha, which ended up being my favorite part of the brunch. Both flavors came through in each sip, a rare find in most matcha fusion drinks. The only challenge with this spot is that it is more cafe than restaurant. They don't take reservations, and tables fill up quickly with people working or eating. Whenever I came with a group of friends, there was never enough seating to accommodate even 4 people. Hopefully they can figure out a way to improve this in the future, since we often decided to eat elsewhere after not finding seating.

I went in around 11 on a Saturday and there were enough seats for two. The vibes are cozy and nice enough for a good conversation with friends. I got the hummus bowl, which came with hummus, a HUGE side tortilla, and a small salad with kale, marinated chickpeas, walnuts, sweet potato, and more. The fact that the tortilla was warmed up was a plus for me, and I loved to make small "wraps" with the tortilla, smothered with hummus, and stuffed with the salad. My friend got the avo toast, and we were surprised by how big it was. The two pieces of toast were smothered with avocado, with a generous pile of veggies, and a perfectly-runny soft boiled egg on each piece. We both finished our plates clean and were very satisfied. When we were done, one of the staff offered to clean our tables, even if there was a self-clean-up station, which I thought was very kind of her. Coming out, I couldn't resist their showcase of different baked goods, so I got two breakfast cookies, and my friend got a blueberry lavender scone, and a bacon cheddar and chive scone. I don't have pictures of them, but I think it would be very worth it to come back to this place just for the baked goods.

I like the Early Bird's eclectic menu. Love their coffee drinks and infused lemonades. Some food items are very unique and tasty and several items might be a bit too avante garde for my taste. The salmon lox open faced sandwich was 4/5 for me. The blend of flavors was interesting, but became tiresome toward the end of the sandwich. I like that I could purchase items for my children like the mini oranges, applesauce and lemonades. They have a cute indoor/ outdoor seated area with some toys for kids and families to play with. Happy this place is in Eastown. Definitely adds to the diverse flavor of the community.

If you're a foodie, you may recognize That Early Bird's sister restaurant downtown Grand Rapids called Little Bird. With the same eye for restaurant design and quality of food comes That Early Bird in Eastown. Breakfast sandwiches, pastries, tacos (including a curried goat one), That Early Bird has it all. They also have a stellar coffee menu, including a delicious brown sugar latte with nutmeg setting it a part from other lattes. There's a MASSIVE dining room with tables and window seating. The outdoor patio is also spacious. If you come to work, there are outlets under the window seating inside. The wifi is strong (get the password from the barista). The prices can be a little steep (my latte was almost $6), but I think it's worth it for the quality and experience.

Perfect spot to go do some studying, chit chat, and chill. Salmon Benedicts are very tasty, looking forward to exploring all their other menu options. The tables along the walk are a little smaller than my liking, especially to work with a laptop and ipad, but doable. My single favourite cafe in Easttown area!

Breakfast tacos - chorizo and potato and black bean

This place amazing!! The breakfast is sooo good. One of the best breakfast I have ever been to. Everything tastes so fresh and has amazing flavor. I have gotten the breakfast tacos with chorizo and black bean and potato. The chorizo is not greasy at all, I don't know how that's possible but it's very impressive. The black bean and potatoes was also really really good. I would highly recommend it for vegetarians. A few weeks later I went back to this place to get take out and decided to get the nachos. They were also so great and filling and delicious. I can't wait to go back again and try something different

i'm a sucker for some good matcha and delicious breakfast. i was pleasantly surprised by how big the portions were and how delicious the food was. The flavors in the california breakfast burrito are amazing and the avocado toast with salmon is a work of art. they're also many vegan options which I look for since i don't eat dairy. it's was so easy to make sure my dish was dairy free and the workers were knowledgeable on the food. note that the menu list is shortened probably due to covid but there are many great options to choose from. great area to sit and chat or read a book etc. will love to come here again!

I had a pretty basic breakfast, bacon and eggs, but they were both very good! My sisters ordered vindaloo curry hash and they both liked it but thought it could've been spicier, ordered it medium. It had nasty mushrooms in it so no way in hell would I have tried it! Their iced americano was really good. I found the menu/ordering process a bit confusing as I thought the only options were what was written up on the boards but later discovered they had a menu as well. So I placed my original order and then cancelled it quickly and put what I wanted to order in. The service as good and it was cute inside. We sat inside as it wasn't that warm yet and it was covered. I would definitely go back!

That Early Bird was fantastic. It is a quicker breakfast place with really fresh food. I had the avo toast which came on some of their homemade bread. It had pickled onion, cabbage, feta, and more! It was a good sized portion and very delicious. I would get it again for sure!

Great atmosphere, quick service, and quality food/coffee. Will be back! The bread they use on these sandwiches is super soft and delicious.

Our server greeted us immediately and filled our glasses with water. She was nice and answered all of our questions. I must say that I was pleasantly surprised with my brunch choices which were the soup of the day, a lentil curry, pumpkin seed combo with tons of good seasoning and cilantro on top...it was soooo good and vegan friendly! For my entree I got the tofu sandwich with the most amazing side salad that had this lemon dressing that set it off right! I could have just had a plate of the salad! Although the tofu sandwich was good, it was a bit on the salty side for my taste, but I still enjoyed it. I would definitely recommend this place for vegan options and I'd come back. So when my family and I were walking around downtown Grand Rapids and needed a place to eat breakfast, we popped into Social Misfits because their menu is basically 90% waffles. My kids love waffles. Every kid loves waffles. Waffles it is! This is a great restaurant for families (because ... waffles), but also a great restaurant for adults because they have a nice selection of creative cocktails in the evening, and coffee in the morning. Social Misfits is basically waffles, alcohol and caffeine, in that order. When we visited in the morning, the adults opted for coffee (really great black coffee!) and the kids both opted for the Little Lad, a waffle topped with strawberries, blueberries and chantilly cream (basically whipped cream, but a little sweeter and whipped a little longer). Both of my children ate most of their waffle, which is a big thing, considering they usually eat like birds. We also got the Son of a Biscuit, which was a garlic parmesan waffle topped with chicken sausage gravy and a fried egg. You could add fried chicken to the mix for an extra $6 (we did not). This one was fine, but the egg was way overcooked! Oh well. Lastly: We got the Ol' Blue Eyes, a waffle topped with blueberry compote, lemon curd, whipped ricotta and graham cracker crumbs. This one tasted amazing, but there was so much blueberry compote and lemon curd that it made the waffle a bit soggy. I think the chef was feeling generous with the toppings, but homie needed to hold back a tad. Sometimes, a little bit goes a long way! Fifty percent less gloppy stuff would have made this waffle dish 100% better. If you ain't really about that waffle life, then not to worry. Social Misfits also has a few "not waffles" items on the menu, like salads, sandwiches and a couple of bar snacks. But I think if you visit this restaurant, you need to just embrace waffles. There are more than a dozen different waffles on the menu. They're all fun and well-thought-out. Pick one and eat waffles for breakfast, lunch or dinner.

I was feeling quite ravenous this morning and got the full order for $11 and a side of bacon. They had a table close to the entrance with extra menus, clean cups, water jugs, hot sauces, silverware and napkins. Seemed like a help-yourself vibe which I grabbed everything we would need for our meal. Our food was brought to us rather quickly and my bf ordered the breakfast bowl with scrambled eggs and sausage. He told me it tasted so good and he loved that he could make his own tacos with his food. He let me try one of the hashbrown rounds and it was perfectly crispy! My biscuits and gravy were phenomenal. The biscuits were so fresh and the gravy had a really nice and comforting flavor to it. You could get chorizo and mushrooms in your gravy but i went with a traditional sausage for my protein. My bacon on the side came in a tiny dish but I ate all four pieces haha. Once we finished, there were some bus bins under the same table with the silverware, we placed all our dirty dishes there and cleaned up after ourselves before leaving. I honestly felt so content leaving there and can't wait to return. I really appreciate the ambiance in there with the beautiful plant life, the lights on the ceiling, and cool decor in general.
