My first visit and I was a little apprehensive because I was the only customer. I have a motto,…read more"go where the people are," and there were no people. I looked at the steam table, and not sure what to get because I tire of spending my money and being disappointed. I ordered something that I thought would be a safe-bet...I ordered 4 fried wings, Mac and cheese, and candied yams. I started tasting my food when I got in the car. The wings were perfectly cooked -- juicy and tender. The Mac and cheese had a decent amount of cheese, not like some places that cover their Mac and cheese with some type of Velveeta sauce. I would have eaten all of my wings in the car, but I needed some hot sauce, which surprisingly the restaurant did not have. I finished my meal when I got home. The yams were delicious...not overly sweet. I will say that the wings and Mac and cheese could have used a little more seasoning, but that was okay...there are many times where I went to a soul food restaurant and had to toss food because it was way too salty. I would rather my food to be under seasoned than over seasoned. You can always add, but you can't take it away. I will definitely return, and try something else on the menu, and hopefully not be disappointed.

I visited this restaurant on a Saturday close to opening time I was told it would be a minute…read morebecause they're still setting up. It took quite a bit time to get my food, even though I was the only one in the restaurant. The service was descent. I had a gift card and wanted to use all of it. So I ordered two dishes. A few items I wanted to try was not available. I order the CJs platter two pieces of chicken and two pieces of perch with a side of dirty rice. The chicken was good. The rice was a little dry and the perch was not my favorite. I also order the Blacken salmon pasta and a side of wings. The pasta was really good. I would order it again. The restaurant has plenty of seating.Great pictures on the wall of different artists on saturdays nights they have live music. There is plenty of parking outside.

Deeply disappointing experience. Won't return…read more We went to CJ's Soul Food yesterday around 2:00 PM, and the restaurant was nearly empty--three other parties total. With that few customers, we expected attentive service. Unfortunately, the experience went downhill quickly. Service: We waited 30 minutes before anyone even acknowledged us. Eventually, the chef came out, handed us menus, took our drink order, and mentioned that not everything on the website menu was available. That turned out to be a massive understatement. The website menu is wildly out of date. Items that are still prominently listed online--but no longer available--include: - Vegetarian Soul Roll - Fried Green Tomatoes (one reason we chose this place) - Aaliyah's Angel Eggs - Crawfish Étouffée (another reason we came) - Beef Polish Boy (another reason we came) On top of that, they were sold out of: - CJ's Soul Roll (the main reason we came) - Smoked Collards Dip - Banana Pudding (also a reason we came) If these items are gone permanently or frequently unavailable, the website menu should be updated or taken down. As-is, it's misleading. After another 15 minutes, our food order was finally taken. The food didn't arrive until 3:20 PM--80 minutes after we walked in. Once the food arrived, the service didn't improve. No one checked on us. Not once. My chicken tenders arrived with no sauce. I had to ask. A young boy brought BBQ sauce, with no options offered. The tenders were so overcooked and tough I needed a knife to cut them. My companion ordered catfish and wings. No sauce was offered or provided--no tartar, no cocktail sauce, nothing. He said the catfish and wings tasted good. The mac and cheese was thick and pasty, not creamy. Atmosphere / Operations: The owner's son was present and clearly old enough to help, but spent most of the time wearing headphones and on his phone while being repeatedly yelled at from across the room. If he's working, he should be engaged. If not, he shouldn't be in the way. We also watched three DoorDash drivers come in to pick up orders--only to leave empty-handed because customers had ordered Soul Rolls that weren't available. If an item isn't being made, update the DoorDash menu. This affects both customers and drivers. The photos show how empty the restaurant was. With so few customers, there's really no excuse for service this slow or inattentive. Bottom line: This place needs serious attention to basics: - Update the website menu - Update the DoorDash menu - Greet customers when they arrive - Check on tables - Plate food properly (or at least offer sauces) - Improve communication and front-of-house operations We won't be back and can't recommend it. Based on this experience, it's hard to see how this business can survive without major changes.

Came here when my first choice nearby was closed for the day. I'd heard a ton of good things about…read moretheir other location, of course, and meant to go eventually but forgot this one was here. Tiny, carryout only, though there are a couple of tables to sit while you wait or maybe to eat a quick lunch. Super friendly staff. Fairly short menu; all the good stuff. I wasn't famished and didn't want to wait for chicken or fish, so I got an assortment of sides thinking that would be quicker. They fried up the okra right then, though, and had a steady stream of pickup orders coming through the door, so it still took 10-15 minutes. It was okay, though, smelling the amazing scents coming from the kitchen, talking to the staff and customers. I hadn't noticed they have ribs (just a picture, not on the menu) so I might've ordered those. Oh well. $20 I think, or they do combos with sides or fish and sides. Anyway. I got fried okra, and it was a big portion and absolutely amazing. No need for any sauces, tasty on its own. Perfectly crisp. Baked beans: my style, sauce so thick you can eat them with a fork. Slightly sweet, mostly savory, very good. Greens (collards) with turkey: outstanding. Tender but not floppy, nicely seasoned. Cornbread: soft, sweet, crumbly, topped with butter. Yum. Geechee rice: seasoned, bacon and sausage, very good. And black-eyed pea salad. I like black-eyed peas but had never had them in a salad. These were great: plump, with bits of tomato and cucumber and onion, in a vinegary dressing. Again, yum. Enough food for two meals. They gave me the side plate special, three sides and cornbread, which helped with the price. I was headed home and not thirsty so I didn't get a drink, but based on conversations with other customers I missed out on the lemonade and sweet tea. I'll be back for those and maybe a rib-fish combo. And to try the mac. Get here if you can!

Turn in at the light, and be careful about which driveway you pick- I think it's the second driveway, near a daycare, and it winds around back to the restaurant. You can see the place from James. Pretty busy at lunchtime, a few dine in and some carryout. Served cafeteria style, so you can see what you want, and drool over it. Well, there's a clear shield, but you know what I mean. I got smothered pork chops, since I hadn't had them forever. Meaty, tender, covered in gravy and onions. So so good, especially as comfort food on a cold day. You can also get them fried. Plenty of other things on the menu looked good. And all of the sides sounded good. I ended up getting one that was a mix of cabbage and greens, instead of getting the two separately, so that gave me space for another side. I went with mac & cheese. Sweetie's mom's mac is the best in the world. I'm not kidding. This is not quite that good, but is a very good homemade version, loaded with cheese, and baked in a big pan. Service was excellent. Prices are a bit steep, but good for the quantity and quality. Canned pop. Cheap plasticware. I was leery, but the pork chops were so tender that even a plastic knife pulled them apart easily. Hardly needed it. The place is not fancy inside. Old, but clean, a few booths and tables. You're there for the food, not the decor. Or, come in and pick it up and take it home. And have better silverware... I will definitely be back. I loved what I got, and was enticed by some of the other things.
