The last couple times we've visited we have been a little disappointed but this visit redeemed our previous visits. Service was fantastic and the food was delicious. Son was home and wanted to go downtown for dinner. We intially started out around the corner at Little Palace but we wanted BBQ and remembered Penny's was close by. So glad we did! I have been here many times but never at night. At night, the patio is amazing. Twinkle lights. Comfortable tables that seat at least six. They have fun music playing at just the right level. They also have patio games: jumbo jenga and two sets of corn hole to play. Plus, the patio is very dog friendly. I was completely in my element and was having so much fun there. Food, as usual, is amazing. Its consistently this way. I recommend the Penny salad if you like beets. Mmmm They use cornbread for croutons and you can add protein for a reasonable up charge. Get dressing on side if you don't like it poured onto your greens heavily. The guys ordered burgers. Fries were delicious and plentiful. When the burgers came out they both said "oh, these look small" but as they ate them they realized they were filling and a perfect size. They each said they would order them again. When I picked up my takeout order, my first thought was, "this would be a fun place to have a few drinks." They had cheap beer, shot and cocktail specials reminiscent of a campus bar, and the patio/open windows have Sunday Funday written all over it. But those good vibes didn't follow the food home. It was our first time visiting Pecan Penny's. We had heard good things + figured we'd give it a try. If I can be honest, the parking is terrible because of their location. I would not go on any other day but Sunday, which is the day we went. The atmosphere was good but they kept the front door wide open, which allowed too many flies in the dining area. I don't particularly care for eating with a bunch of flies all around me competing for my food. Our waiter was THE BEST!! He was friendly, patient, kind, + funny. We tried the "DOWNTOWN SAMPLER" which consists of ¼ Beef Brisket, ¼ Pulled Pork, ¼ Chicken, Texas toast + 2 sides. The greens were the best + seasoned great! The baked beans were good; creamy with a little spicy kick, I personally prefer sweet + creamy. We also got to try a free sample of their Mac + Cheese. Very bland + not baked. I was disappointed cause I'm a big Mac + Cheese girl. I could tell If they would have added some additional types of cheese + baked it, it would have been really good. Now onto the MEATS!!! This is where I found out that I am not a fan of their smoked barbecue at all. All their meat is made with a dry-rub and a "signature spice" + cooked slow over pecan and oak wood. It was something about the signature spice + the way they cook it, that I did NOT enjoy. Everyone's taste buds are different. They had four signature wet sauces on the table that you could add to your meat for flavor. I personally did not like any of them and I'm not sure why. Desserts!!! Our absolute FAVORITE was The Funnel Cake Fries!!! They were piping hot, fresh, + so sweet + good! We couldn't get enough of those! Came in for a quick meal before a show. Good bbq place with nice beers and cocktails. I had smoked wings with dry rub and a brisket Philly. The wings were medium smoky and not overdone (they can get mushy if they're over-smoked). The brisket Philly was very good - the brisket was smoky and extremely tender! They have a fun feature - a pickle soaked in Koolaid - the flavor changes weekly (?). I had a pickle soaked in cherry koolaid - it was like a gherkin but not as sweet or spicy. Pecan Penny's is a good place to just chill with friends, It's very casual as if you are hanging out at a bbq in the park . There are outdoor games and you can bring in board games to play if you like. Servers are friendly. This time l stopped in for Burger and Beer week- the featured burger was Brisket Chili Burger it had brisket patty with chili and cheese- the burger was a bit of a disappointment - the chili left bun mushy and l had to add lots of bbq to get the flavor. I would definitely come back to Pecan Penny's as l typically like the food and burgers- - but l should have just went with one the normal burgers (which l know is cooked exactly the way l like). This was my first time back at Penny's in a few years, so I was excited to catch up with some friends after work for a couple beverages and some good food. The restaurant was moderately full for a midweek winter day, but we were still greeted with hospitality. We decided to grab seats at the bar, had a few rounds of shots, and a couple mixed drinks in between yo keep our hands busy. Although the bar tenders also seemed to be serving the entire restaurant service was still attentive and prompt. For food, I ordered the brisket, greens, and cornbread. Unfortunately the greens arrived cold, and the brisket arrived in what I'd personally deem a kids portion, which was a extra unfortunate when I realized it was mostly fat. Whenever I'm in the Columbus area, I always find my way here. Always a solid choice. The brisket is definitely the star here they are always consistent with the flavor and cook! This is one spot I don't have to hope. I'm going to get some good brisket it's always legit. You definitely want to save room for deserts they got that down, too. The banana pudding is my thing! And even though the barbecue at Pecan Penny's is amazing, you're not going to find happiness with a woman who makes fun of you after you seek her attention, tip her noticeably well, and step out. You did nothing wrong here to deserve being made fun of by her and her friends in front of other customers, but since we're being real -- you're not going to find what you're looking for at this bar. I highly recommend travel. You talked about Spain today. Try Latin America or South America. There are warm places that will naturally and authentically support your energy, where a woman has real empathy and a real heart for you. Find the authentic kindness. It exists. There is so much beauty out there, and you'll find a woman who values how you work and who you are as a man despite past flaws. Pecan Penny's bar is not the place where you're going to find that kind of woman. If it was, there would be a line around the corner for the amazing barbecue and authentic friendship. She said she is going to request Google to review it (photo attached). I don't know why Google would remove this review, when it is honest. Realizing I'll never be going back to this restaurant now, I think about how I supported Pecan Penny's for years (thousands of dollars of purchases during the pandemic when we ran Hidden Drive-In events in Downtown Columbus). I don't regret those times of support. I just notice how much has changed in the culture of this restaurant and maybe that is a reflection of downtown, or Columbus, or the country -- but I try not to let myself go that far. I stopped in for brunch on a Saturday. You can smell the smoking meat and see the smoke coming up as you walk up so you're already getting in the mood before you even open the door. The portion sizes were perfect. The food was delicious and, since all of the smoking happened before I arrived, it came out super fast. My only complaint was that the TVs were on the wall where we were sitting and, although it wasn't exactly packed, they were turned up as loud as possible. They should get some speakers and have audio around the building but at a lower level. I'm definitely going to come back when I'm passing through Columbus. When we got there, the restaurant was a bit bigger than I expected and they have a very nice patio in the front and a cozy patio in the back. It seems like a great place to hang out with friends and have good food. There were a couple fire pits for cooler days and indoor seating for cold days. It all seems cozy and we enjoyed the environment. We got the sampler, with hush puppies and coleslaw as sides, and tried all of the sauces they provide. For the price of $25, I don't think we got a good amount of food, but I was not fulfilled. I thought the pork was a bit dry and the brisket wasn't as flavorful as I wanted. The chicken was the best meat on the sampler that day, it was juicy and flavorful. I also didn't think the hush puppies or coleslaw were anything special. Overall, the meals was okay, not great. Our server was super nice and was so helpful in getting all of the sauces for us to try! I really appreciated our server tracking down the sauces for us. Overall, I wasn't impressed with the bbq, but I would come back for a 2nd chance. I liked the atmosphere and the decor a lot. I recommend this place for small groups, a casual date, or family dinner. I got the brisket plate with potato salad and collard greens. The potato salad honestly was so good. I didn't have high expectations but it was very impressive. The poutine fries were a strangely good combination- waffle fries topped with gravy, cheese curds, an egg, and green onions! As a bonus, they bring out a basket of house made sauces including barbecue, hot sauce, and mustard. The house mustard in particular was fantastic and goes so well with the waffle fries. We both ordered the Costanza burger, but neglected to get a photo because they were gone in minutes. This burger was topped with the most tender and delicious brisket I have ever had- a solid choice for any brisket burger lover. The overall atmosphere of the restaurant is also top notch. I've been meaning to come here since it opened, but the location, and the buzz, kept me away. Now that things have quieted down, I came by since we were nearby at an off time. Baby K loved the cornhole area (well, the beanbags) and the games. We sat inside, where it was cooler. She had mac and cheese, of course, and ate all of it. I tried some, it was pretty darn good. I got the sampler- brisket, pulled pork, and chicken. Each meat was flavorful, no need for sauce. They have half a dozen, and all are good-not-great. The Eastern NC, for example, reminded me of the flavors down there but was just not as good as the ones in shacks I've had there. Memphis, same. Their signature sauce is good; the spicy version is not very spicy. My favorite was probably the gold, YMMV. Anyway, the meat does not need sauce, sign of a good BBQ place. Not the best ever, but pretty good stuff. And the sides are also good, another indicator. I had greens and baked beans as my sides, and both were excellent. The sampler also came with pretty average Texas toast. Again, good-not-great. We had to try the Koolaid pickle. Baby K was confused by the description, but loved it, and said "it DO taste like that!" Service was great. The place is cool, with lots of seating options. It was not packed when we went at 3 on a Sunday. Oh, and free parking then, another plus. Not very kid-focused. The games are more for adults. I did not see a kid's menu section. The mac came in a very hot dish (the server warned us.) No drinks appropriate for small hands (we got lemonade in the smallest cup, and it was huge.) They did have high chairs, though we were okay at a table with benches. The server definitely helped out, so it's not an attitude thing, just that they don't have things really set up for kids. We made do, and Baby K had a good time. It is a bit expensive. I mean, it's BBQ, so it will be, and the location matters too. But even then, we paid a lot for lunch, and had no leftovers. So, not quite as good as Ray Ray's but still good, and more expensive. This is an awesome place to go to. The food is perfect BBQ, the service was solid (the bartender and waitstaff were nice and helpful) and the ambiance was great. We really like the patio area with the lights at night, but also the option to go inside in case of a windy night. Let me talk about the BBQ. We've spent some time in NC, so we know the good stuff. We got the pulled pork, the brisket, and the chicken (the sampler) with collard greens, cornbread, cucumbers and hush puppies. Puppies were fried nicely and enjoyable. All of the BBQ was cooked just right, and they had a variety of sauces to suit different preferences. I think we would get the exact same platter next time, the chicken is a little less flavorful than the other meats, but super tender and good to get for variety.
