A lot of changes have occurred at Mr. Shawarma since my review of four years ago. It is still a cafeteria style operation, but one that is now more finely tuned than before.
Under the leadership of their owner, Avi Eli, they are ever seeking to tweak their recipes to raise the flavors of their Middle Eastern street cuisine to higher levels.
As you are guided by an overhead menu above their counter, your first task is to decide upon a Pita, Wrap, or Bowl.
Next, you decide upon your choice of protein. In addition to their Turkey Shawarma, they now offer Chicken Shawarma, Chicken Schnitzel, Beef Shawarma, Falafel, and Sabih.
Your choice of hummus comes next, starting with their mild but flavorful Original Hummus as a base. In addition, they now offer a spicy Jalapeno Cilantro Hummus and an even spicier Habanero Chili Hummus.
Their Habanero Chili Hummus is always my choice to satisfy my hot tooth. Oh, it burns so good!
You then choose your toppings, which include their salads and sauces. Included are Fried Eggplant, Red Cabbage Salad, Tomato Salad, and Onions Sumac.
Fries and Yellow Basmati Rice can also be included as toppings, or as separate sides, or both.
Their Sauces include their Garlic Sauce, their Tahini Sauce, and their Amba Sauce, which is a pickled mango sauce with a mildly spicy kick.
I order my toppings "All The Way" with all of their salads and sauces named above. The only thing I omit are the fries.
One new addition since my last review is their self serve pickle bar. After you pay for your completed order at the counter, you can add pepperocinis, pickled cucumbers, and pickled carrots.
I recently enjoyed the following:
TURKEY SHAWARMA BOWL: Marinated Turkey, Habanero Chili Hummus, and "All The Way" with the salads and sauces listed above.
I topped it off further with Pepperocinis and Carrots from their pickle bar. A thick and puffy slice of Pita Bread is also included.
One change has been a shift from their former platter format to a bowl format. Personally, I preferred the visual appeal of the platter, with its larger surface area showcasing more of their ingredients.
The shiny foil disposable bowl almost hurts my eyes. With its smaller diameter, many of the ingredients, including the proteins, are hidden beneath the surface. All the bowls tend to look alike.
Yet, the bowl format works. By layering and packing the ingredients more tightly within a smaller space, their flavors are intensified beyond those I remember with the platter format. The improved flavor overcomes the presentation.
The ingredients proved to be a winning formula that exploded with flavor and blew me away to a state of bliss. There was enough to take home for a second meal. My Rating: 5 Stars.
BEEF SHAWARMA BOWL: Marinated Beef with everything else described above. My comments with their Turkey Shawarma Bowl apply to this one as well.
There is something magical about the way they marinate their beef to its deep and delicious flavor profile. Once again, the ingredients set off a taste explosion in my mouth with enough to take home. My Rating: 5 Stars.
TURKEY SHAWARMA PITA: Marinated Turkey with everything described above except the Basmati Yellow Rice. A thick slice of pita bread is sliced to form a pocket sandwich to pack the ingredients.
Their pita sandwiches are presented in a wrapper atop a paper lined metal tray. If I can make one suggestion, it would be to offer some paper plates for a more appealing presentation. I keep a stack of paper plates in the trunk of my car, and I brought one in for my photo.
Otherwise, the flavors were off the charts delicious. I rate their pita sandwiches as the best I've tried in the Hampton Roads area. My Rating: 5 Stars.
CHICKEN SHAWARMA WRAP: Marinated Chicken with all of the ingredients described above. The ingredients are rolled up inside a large round flatbread and rolled up like a burrito.
Their wrap preparation didn't work as well for me as the others. The ingredients were loosely packed, giving the wrap a floppy look.
I think it can be improved by packing its ingredients more tightly and then cutting it in half upon a plate. Their flavors were not as robust but were still intact. My Rating: 4 Stars.
FALAFEL: Five pieces of fresh falafel, which are deep fried balls of chickpea flour with pureed green herbs, were ordered as a side dish. They come with a side container of Tahini sauce.
Their falafel were delightfully crisp on the outside and moist of the inside. One of their ingredients is cumin, which they source from overseas. Overall, their falafel is their best I have ever tasted. My Rating: 5 Stars.
Their staff members are super friendly and constantly in motion. During one lunch visit, two of their staff members were busy outside washing the windows to their storefront.
Mr. Shawarma has now assumed a more regular spot in my dining rotation. I am pleased to renew their 5-star rating and look forward to my future visits. read more
