Here's my food blog. hamptonroadsmenu.com Shawarma and Things, a place recently opened at the Janaf shopping center is bringing shawarma to Norfolk, Virginia. With a clean atmosphere and a cool furniture design with tables resembling a marble esthetic, the food was enjoyed with atmosphere appropriate foreign music. I was also pleased to see chicken and lamb roasting vertically on slowly rotating spits making sure every inch of it was slowly cooked. The meal I ordered was the Lamb Shawarma Bowl. According to the menu, it came with "Basmati Rice Cooked with Aromatic Spices and Saffron, Mixed Green Salad Topped with Lamb Shawarma Strips, Tahini Sauce, Pomegranate Dressing, Parsley and Sumac(.)" The lamb was tender and soft and very easy to chew and was quite flavorful and seasoned well. The greens gave the bowl a nice leafy texture with an added crunch from the onions helping make the entrée filling with the rice rounding it out. The pomegranate dressing added a hint of sweetness which complemented the lamb and the greens but not overpowering it. And, the tahini sauce added a comforting creamy quality making it even more tasty. Oh, and since it was my first time at this place, I was given this tea served in a fancy small glass cup that was quite minty and warm and sweet. It was quite good! With the soothing music in the background, I had a delicious and relaxing experience.

    Falafel.

If you live around the area, there's a few decent shawarma spots here and there, but decent is where it usually stops. I don't claim to be an expert on Middle Eastern cuisine but Shawarma and Things has claimed their place as a great shawarma spot and completely blown by the competition. Every single item I've ordered has been nothing short of incredible. Flavorful and cooked to perfection, and they can keep you on your toes with their rotation of all manner of fresh desserts. Couple that with a very friendly staff and a clean, welcoming restaurant, you can tell this joint run with love. They claim the best shawarma on the East Coast, I haven't traveled enough to know if that's true, but I can confidently say it's the best in VA.

Not a good quality meat. I don't recommend this place at all. It was too expensive and over rated.

Reminds me of my 8 years in Saudi Arabia. Been looking for shawarma places that reminded me of my time there. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Everything tasted fresh, flavorful, and authentic, and you can watch it being prepared in the open kitchen. Everyone at our table enjoyed their meal, and there were no complaints about the food at all. What made the experience a little strange was the service. During our visit, the owner was noticeably short with the one and only server and spoke to her in a way that felt belittling, especially in front of customers. It was uncomfortable to watch. At the same time, the waitress asked us to leave her tip in cash or through Cash App before we had even received our food. That felt a little unusual and off-putting, as though we were being steered toward a specific way of tipping before any service had really happened. She had also mentioned that a birthday treat was coming out, but after we waited for a bit, she came back and told us the owner was upset with her and wasn't sending it out after all. That was odd and left us a little confused. Overall, it was a weird experience from a service standpoint, but the food was genuinely excellent. If you're going for authentic gyros and Mediterranean food, it's worth a visit. Just be prepared that the atmosphere may be a little unpredictable.

I got a bowl of chicken and lamb with everything in it. I saw a a few customers before me ordered the falafel and thought it must be something I got to try, so I ordered some as well. At checkout I couldn't decide which sauce to choose and ended up with four different sauce to try. The food was fresh and the flavors were just right. Also, found out the falafel would not be something I personally will crazy for. The four sauces I tried and describe as... 1) Garlic - similar to ranch 2) Harissa Aioli - similar to ranch yet a tad spicy (My favorite) 3) Tahini - similar to light ranch with a very light touch of sesame butter 4) Amber - tangy and a bit bitter with turmeric Either I was already sleepy when I had the food or the food had me feel sleepy afterwards. Overall, it was worth a try.

We were greeted by a helpful employee and the owner. They helped us decide what to order. We ordered the grilled chicken platter with a side of falafel. We made the mistake of not expressing that this meal was to-go. Another customer walked in after we ordered, placed his order (a wrap) and got his meal on a tray within 5 minutes. He ate in the restaurant and by the time he ate and left, our food still wasn't ready. It was only us and the customer that came in after us and ordered a wrap, so it wasn't busy. When we did get the food, it was tasty, hot, and tasted fresh. The food and the service was good, just express if you want to-go upfront and if you're eating in, prepare for the possibility of a wait. Update: We last went here a couple of months ago. We passed by on 6/22/25 and they are now permanently closed. Hate to see that! Hopefully they will be able to reopen at another location.
