This place is not it. I got a chicken bowl and a hummus bowl. They only had a handful of toppings - the chickpeas weren't seasoned- taste like they came straight from the can. The meat lacked flavor. Sophia and I ate lunch at one of our favorite spots on the Southside this past Saturday. For years, Mr. Shawarma has been a place to enjoy Middle Eastern food for a decent price. It has been a year since I posted an updated review so it was time for a revisit. Foot traffic was decent with a big set of folks who were from ODU eating inside. And the staff was quite busy when we walked in. It didn't take long at all for us fo place our orders. I selected the beef and lamb shawarma including hummus and jalapeno for the base, eggplant, cabbage, the tomato/cucumber salad mix, pickles and garlic sauce along with a side of fries. The pita was really good with the protein and veggies. I must say the jalapeno added much needed spice to the meal. All of this came together as usual. Unfortunately, I was a bit disappointed with the fries and so was Sophia. They tasted hard and a bit stale. I wondered if they just had a batch standing there for a good while. I did finish over half of it, but the rest I couldn't eat. Besides the fries situation, the meal was good enough to be full. Finally I was able to swing by this past weekend and it was exactly what I thought it would be. I got the lamb and beef shawarma bowl with everything on it. Even the eggplant which I was nervous about was pretty good. I may tell them light eggplant next time because I'm not a huge fan of the larger piece's texture. The falafel was the best I've ever had! The food here is amazingly good, but it is a little expensive. I am a big lamb person, and the shwarma was extra juicy. They gave us a good amount of hot peppers, which were a lot saltier than I thought it would be: more salty than pickled vinegar flavor. The hummus and grilled eggplant and vegetables were amazing with the lamb and beef. The fries on the side were a lot more greasy than I like and less crispy, but it went really well with the bowl. I really appreciated the pita bread that came with the bowl because it paired really well with everything combined. I can eat the whole bowl in one sitting. It's a good size bowl, and they stuffed my fiance's wrap. It was wrapped pretty well. The staff is very nice, and they are more than happy to give you more of something if you ask. I ordered the falafel wrap with hummus, jalapeño cilantro schug, fried eggplant, onions with sumac, fresh parsley, and cucumber and tomatoes topped with tahini sauce. Everything tasted fresh. When my fiancé and I walked in we saw that the there were only a few pieces of falafel left and asked if a fresh batch was being brought out soon. The employee that helped start our order asked one of the other employees to make a fresh batch of falafel. That employee was sweeping the floors when she was asked about the new batch of falafel and when she finished sweeping she immediately changed her gloves to work on the batch. When the batch was finished they finished making my wrap and all of the ingredients tasted SO fresh. I have a dairy allergy and appreciated the non-dairy vegan options they had. All the tables were clean and the bathrooms were clean as well. They also have a pretty outdoor dining space. They are a bit pricey, so be prepared. I may have found my new favorite quick and easy lunch spot! Luckily for me, this location is right near an area that I come to often for appointments so it's an easy spot to stop at. They don't have their own parking, but it is easy to utilize the parking lot across the street. This is hands down the best falafel I've had in Hampton Roads, and in my top 3 of falafels I've had anywhere ever. I've been on a search for some really good falafel and Mediterranean food since it is one of my favorite cuisines, so I'm happy that I found this restaurant in Norfolk. I had the falafel in a pita, which was very soft and chewy. It was a big portion and I packed it in with eggplant, veggies, and hummus. Great spot with straightforward choices and fast services. Typically places with build-your-own bowl style have a lot of add-ons and it can get a little overwhelming but not with this place. And even so, you still get to have a very tasty bowl. If you the chicken schnitzel as your protein, it is made on the spot. So you get freshly fried breaded goodness! The biggest pro in this place is that their food isn't doused in cilantro like some similar style places do it (i.e. Chipotle). While they do have some add-ons with cilantro in them, majority of the add-ons don't have it mixed in which is preferable for my boyfriend and I. I personally don't mind it, but my boyfriend has a strong aversion to them because to him it tastes so much like soap. For the area, not terrible and probably one of the better options around but still a little underwhelming unfortunately. Their falafel is a little dry and could be greener - a good falafel as I've learned from my middle eastern friends is crumbly, with plenty of green inside to signify thoroughly added herbs to give the chickpeas fragrance. Their meat (particularly their chicken) is well flavored but could be juicier. I like the variety of sides/authentic additions like hummus, eggplant, cucumber/tomato salad. Their fries aren't crispy but I actually kind of like it as it mixes with the hummus rice and meat well in this way, blending nicely texture wise. Since the area is hurting for good and authentic middle eastern spots I can see why it's so popular but there is def room for improvement and I'm rooting for that! read more

This just made it to my list of favorite fast casual places to eat in Norfolk! I only wish I lived closer & my only regret from my first visit was that I didn't take a picture of the foood (I was too busy enjoying my shawarma bowl). Been coming here since they opened. Today I encountered the rudest employee ever. She was so disrespectful that I will not come back if she's working and may never come back. We ordered a kids meal and asked to add chick peas and she said she couldn't do that. So I asked to pay she said no. Then we got our food and sat down and our fries are cold which normally never happens. So I asked for new fries and she said no again. I had to ask three times for hot fries. This is unacceptable. Loveeee this place! If you're not familiar with shawarma, it is roasted meat that is shaved off a spit into thin slices. I usually like to get half chicken and half beef & lamb in a bowl!
